Subject choices in Year 11 are extremely important and must be in line with the things you enjoy, the content you want to explore, the future you are interested in and your capabilities. Interviews with students will occur in the coming weeks to ensure that students are making appropriate choices based on these points. If in doubt about what is suitable please speak to your teachers, Mrs Barber, Mrs Maljevac, Mr Riley or myself. Choices for Year 9 are also important and should be based on the subjects you enjoy and want to learn more about. The process is to be done on line and this information is in the Subject Selection booklet. You must ensure you type in the link exactly as it is case sensitive. The site will be open until next week. Students should complete choices, print the page and both parent and student need to sign the document. This should then be brought to school and given to Mr Riley. I need to point out that this is not the final selection as the first part of the process enables us to set up the lines that are then available for students to choose. Subjects that only a few students want to do cannot be accommodated as our staffing allocation dictates that classes need to be an average of 24 in the senior school. Lines will be set up based on most popular and best fit for the cohort and then students are asked to choose again. In most cases there may still be a third adjustment to the lines and subjects offered in the final round. It is a complicated process that is overridden by staffing allocations and class sizes. We do our best to accommodate as many students as we can but some are always asked to be flexible. This Newsletter reports on many students who have performed at an exceptional level in a number of sports. I congratulate all those students and thank the teachers who have supported them in attending these events. Special thanks to Bruce Atcheson who has accompanied the Surfing Team at the State Titles. This was a mammoth commitment but one he did willingly as he is so passionate about our students, our school and the sport. Thank you also to parents for helping with the necessary support. Bring Your Own Device Update The BYOD program enables students to bring a personally owned technology device to school to support their learning. In an exciting development in education, the use of personally-owned devices presents many opportunities to engage students in learning activities using the device they know best. Four classes are currently participating in the BYOD Pilot Program, or trial, for a four week period. The BYOD Pilot Program will allow the school to work out any problems or issues that may arise, before deciding on the nature of any school-wide implementation. You can follow the progress of the BYOD program via a blog on the school website: http:// kincumberbyodblog.wordpress.com Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Not all devices can connect to the school wi-fi. For a list of devices that do and do not connect, please see the BYOD page on the school website (under the Curriculum tab). There you will find a raft of BYOD information, including FAQs, free software details and tips on how to be cybersmart. Teachers have their own blog to discuss the impact of BYOD on the classroom and to share teaching strategies. A Parent Information Evening on BYOD is being planned for later in Term 3. If you have any questions about BYOD, please contact Mr Matt Riley (Deputy Principal). Snowboard Team Two of our Year 10 students, Nick Rendall and Manning Allen-Scott, represented Kincumber High School at the NSW Interschools competition held at Thredbo in the recent school holidays. Both boys competed in Boarder Cross (Boarder X) and Giant Slalom (GS), having two runs to determine their overall placing. Nick and Manning both posted times that allow them to progress to the final round of competition or State level for the Boarder X event. That is scheduled for early August. We wish the boys all the best for that competition. Rebecca Roth, Drama/English Teacher Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Year 12 Careers News This is a very important time of the year for all the Year 12 students who are considering the option of university. The 2015 UAC Guide has been received by the school and was distributed after assembly yesterday. The UAC Guide contains all the information the students will need to know about the ATAR, university courses, university admission, important dates if you are looking at university and information about the individual universities themselves. If you miss out please come and see Mrs Barber in the Careers Office. All Aboard! On Friday 27 June Kincumber High School students had the opportunity to complete their boat licence, equivalent to the Maritime General Boat Licence log book practical lesson, on a fully equipped training vessel 4.7m Quintrex Escape. Students gained skills in loading and unloading the boat, boat safety, radio communication and marker identification. The fine weather was ideal for practising driving the boat in Brisbane Water and students look forward to using their licence during their weekends. Earthquake The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii from a strong, deep earthquake that struck near Fiji on Monday morning. KHS seismometer detected an earthquake near Fiji last week. The earthquake was centred about 62 miles north northeast of Ndoi Island, Fiji, and 232 miles east southeast of Suva, Fiji, at a depth of about 382 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The warning centre said no tsunami was generated because the earthquake was too deep inside the earth. Denise De Paoli, Science Teacher Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 SPORT REPORT 2014 NSW STATE SURF TITLES On Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 July a group of five very talented surfers headed off to Port Macquarie to compete in the NSW State Surfing Titles accompanied by Mr Atcheson, our previous KHS Head Teacher PDHPE. Results are as follows: Jasper Davis – stepped up into the team after Finn Hill broke his arm. He performed well after having stitches out only the week before the competition. Sandon Whittaker – made it all the way through to the Junior Boys semi-final, gaining equal second but was unfortunately relegated to third on a count back and narrowly missed the final. Sian Chapman — initially was knocked out in the first round but fought her way back into the competition, progressing to the Junior Girls semi-final. Our two standout performances came from Macy Callaghan and Kirra-Belle Olsson who won the Junior Girls NSW State Schools Surfing Team Title, backing up with second place in the Senior Girls State Division. Their Individual results were: Macy Callaghan: NSW State Junior Surfing Girl Champion – Macy won this event and was named as an All Star which means she now progresses on to the Australian Schools Surfing Titles. Second place in the NSW Open Girls Division – Again Macy was named as an All Star and will represent NSW at the Australian Titles in both divisions. This is a fantastic achievement for a student who only turned 14 this year. Kirra-Belle Olsson - was placed third in the final of the Junior girls event and is now a reserve for the State team. Kirra-Belle also performed well in the Senior Division. This is also a fantastic achievement for Kirra-Belle who only turns 13 this year. I would like to thank all the parents in attendance for their support of our students, Avoca Board Riders for use of their minibus and a special thank you to Mr Atcheson for his great organisation and enthusiasm, who had nothing but praise for the excellent sportsmanship and behaviour of our surfers representing Kincumber High School. Most of our surfers have remained up the coast to compete in the NSW State Surfing Titles and we wish them the best of luck! OPEN GIRLS TENNIS TEAM I would like to acknowledge the excellent performance of our Open Girls Tennis Team: Jasmine King, Jessica Graves, Abbey Fletcher and Amie Couper who are the Sydney North Girls Champions. The students were to compete at the State Finals in Gunnedah this week but, unfortunately, had to forfeit due to sickness and injury. Avoca Beach Primary Soccer Match on Oval I would like to thank the following students for their efforts setting up and taking down the soccer nets and running the lines – Jai Gaffey, Wade McMahon, Lucy Kemp, Michael Martin and Lewis Martin for refereeing. Thanks also goes to Mr Saines for again marking the field. It was greatly appreciated by the primary schools with Terrigal Primary the victor 4:1. Parents welcome Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Maths News It has been quite an exciting start to the term; the start of the BYOD pilot program for 7K Mathematics, the Australian Mathematics Competition will run on August 7 and Mr White has returned from his overseas jaunt. While Mr White’s classes are happy to have him back, I would like to thank Mrs Waite for all of her hard work with these classes during Term Two. Maths will be running a Silver Award BBQ on August 1, recognising the consistent effort put in by so many of our students. Students will receive an invitation next week if they have reached this level. Congratulations to Mr Paszkowski’s 8K class, the majority of whom have now achieved silver level. We would also like to recognise some recent ‘Student of the Week’ choices - well done Keely O’Toole, Bethany Deakin and Sophie Randall who were all nominated late last term. The girls’ work on solving equations was outstanding! Mrs Woodley’s 7K Mathematics class has been involved in the BYOD pilot program. While we are still in the ‘setting up’ stage, reactions have been positive from the students. Access to mangahigh maths, edmodo, and other activities aimed at consolidation of classwork has become a lot easier. We also have a new class set of chromebooks destined for use in our intensive numeracy program, which load quickly and are pretty exciting to use! Interestingly, most 7K students have chosen apple products for this BYOD trial, mainly ipods, iPads and iphones. Students in Year 10 who are still not certain about their level of Maths in Year 11 (or indeed…IF they should choose Maths at all) should come and talk to Mrs Woodley about options. Students from 5.2 (10N) who are considering attempting the Mathematics course, in particular, will need to complete some ‘bridging’ work before commencing this course, as the demands in algebra in particular are well above 5.2 standard. Even if you are coping well in class, you should still come and see Mrs Woodley. A reminder that calculators and workbooks are essential for working productively in Mathematics, even if you are using a ‘BYOD’. Mr White still has some calculators which can be purchased – pay $22 at the front office and bring the receipt to the Mathematics staff room. Mrs J Woodley, Mathematics Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Hunter Valley Wyandotte Show Excursion Last Saturday ten students travelled to the Maitland Showground to enter our beautiful Wyandotte birds in the show. The day started at 5.00am with students catching the birds, and feeding all the animals on the school farm. The bus left on time at 6.00am, arriving at the showground at 7.45am. We had a lot of pressure on us as the birds had to be penned by 8.30am. Everyone pulled together to wash the birds in nice soapy water and put on some oil to make their combs and legs really stand out. 20 birds were entered by the ten students before the 8.30am deadline. Then it was time for breakfast. We went to MacDonald’s for food and a quiet chat about what we would do for the rest of the day. Upon returning to the showground the students looked around the poultry shed and soon realised the Kincumber High School birds were not as large as some of the other birds in the show. They now realise the importance of a breeding program concentrating on traits that need improving. The birds received many prizes. There was a reserve champion, two firsts and two seconds. Unfortunately, we just missed out on the overall junior champion prize. That is the end of the poultry showing season for 2014. The first chickens have already hatched out with the Sydney Royal Show being the big target for 2015. It was a great day. Cattle Show Team Report This term is a very busy with three shows planned, the Tocal Live Show, the inaugural Kincumber High School parading and judging day, and the big one, the Singleton Steer Show. The students are busy parading the steers most lunch times and are working on reaching a very professional standard. Over the past few years our students have learnt that attention to every detail is very important to winning. Our students now look great in their Agriculture uniforms and have great gear to work with when training and competing at the shows. It is now up to the students to listen, practice and improve to bring back the results that they deserve. The cattle will perform well in the ring as long as the students allow them to. I look forward to helping the students improve their cattle handling skills during the term and watch them with pride compete against students from the Central Coast and across the State. Good luck this term. Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Peas Peas and More Peas Students from Year 7 Agriculture have been busy planting peas. Most students have said they have never eaten fresh peas and have promised to try them when they are ready to eat. Each group of students was required to plant their peas in two straight rows with equal distance between each seed. Students understand it will be obvious to check their work once the peas have germinated. The objective of the project is to have the students understand what is required to grow a successful crop, especially fertiliser, weed and insect control. The students will be asked to take their peas home and include them in their family dinner and report back to me on the results. Can’t wait for the crop to mature. Guest choreographer Casey Natty from the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Program (NAISDA Dance College) ran the workshop. Casey is in his final year of a Diploma in Professional Dance Performance at NAISDA Dance College. He has been studying at the college for nearly four years and will graduate early next year. The students participated in three classes consisting of technical jazz, Indigenous inspired contemporary, and hiphop. All students enjoyed themselves thoroughly, learnt new and exciting things about Dance and were inspired by Casey's background, training and knowledge of 'Dance as an Artform'. The following is an excerpt from an article in the Sydney Morning Herald on NAISDA Dance College that features Casey Natty. Casey Natty will graduate from NAISDA this year. Photo: Edwina Pickles “When he was 16, Muswellbrook's Casey Natty took part in the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association's inaugural ConnectEd workshop program, which identifies and develops dance talent in high schoolers across the state. Natty had always been a dancer – his uncle taught him traditional indigenous dances from a young age – but never thought of it as a career. There was always rugby league and volleyball and basketball to worry about, and none of his mates danced. But over several days at NAISDA Dance College's Mount Penang headquarters, learning with students who had travelled in from across the state just like him, a passion took hold. ''It makes you stronger to meet other indigenous mob who have the same life focus as you,'' he said. He was particularly inspired by cultural tutors from Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land. ''Elcho is a totally different planet. I'm from mainland NSW, a long way away, but I felt a strong connection to their dances.'' When he returned to Muswellbrook, Natty decided he would audition for NAISDA and, at the end of this year, he will be the first person to graduate from NAISDA to have had their start in ConnectEd.“ Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/dance/young-indigenous-dancers-passion-built-through-connections20140626-zsmt4.html#ixzz38FMZPsD1 Issue 11 Term 3 – Week 2 25 July 2014 Would you like to join one of the fastest growing sports in the world?
