Grant exhibit their art; a collection of works purchased at Main Street Art Festival is on display; a group of Denton artists show; and Presidential portraits are exhibited. Z's Cafe offers an eclectic menu of fresh hot specials every day, plus panini, sandwiches and salads. Come by and get some delicious lunch. Serving from 10 - 2PM Monday through Saturday. In the Theatres: classic Shakespeare revisits the Sanders; a group rocks it up; and a little soul brightens up our day. The Arts Center has a few events this month: a Christian group meets, Tango dances, guitar lessons commence, and a fitness group performs. Check the Calendar of Events at www.artsfortworth.org for more details on these and other events. All gallery receptions are free and open to the public. Elaine Taylor, Gallery Manager • FOCUS GALLERY ONE: Mendeleevian Spectre Through August 22, 2009 Josh Reames uses an understanding of layering from his printmaking background to depict the spiritual world. As the physical world is comprised of physical elements, so the spiritual work must be comprised of spiritual elements. (Mendeleev is credited with creating Through August 22, 2009 the periodic table of elements) In Reames' work, mental processes are translated into symbolic depictions using color, line and shape; the non-physical fundamental matter is replaced with tangible mark-making to produce a visual language that depicts a personal, albeit fragmented, delineation of the spiritual world. • FOCUS GALLERY TWO: The G.R.A.S is Always Greener Through August 22, 2009 Ian O'Brien has become the sole proprietor to a town called Grip River. He is the mayor, the city council, the newspaper editor, the architect, the contractor, the construction worker, the personal secretary, etc in the town that he created. Through August 22, 2009 This installation looks at both the invented history of Grip River and the artist's own personal history. O'Brien finds that his own memories from his childhood have been taken out of context as he has grown into an adult. He finds himself looking at the games and the fantastic worlds created in his youth with the eye of an amateur archaeologist. Drawing on social anthropology, the role of the museum, academia, and art, O'Brien tries to recreate his past and give the viewer a guided tour. Focus Gallery Exhibitions are a presentation of the Exhibition Advisory Panel of the FWCAC and the Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. • OTHER GALLERIES: Texas Artists Coalition Juried Membership Show August 7 - August 30, 2009 Reception for the Artists August 7, 2009 6 - 9PM • Main Street Art on Tour Artwork by members of the Texas Artists Coalition as juried by Kevin Vogel, director of Valley House Gallery in Dallas. The Texas Artists Coalition is a membership program designed to offer benefits for artists in the North Texas community. These benefits range from an annual juried exhibition to peer reviews to workshops, plus much more. The mission of the TAC is to help develop the careers of artists, whether they are emerging or established, amateur or professional. Thirty-one artists were selected from over one hundred and twenty members. Awards will be presented at 7PM. August 7 - August 30, 2009 Art on Tour is a collaborative educational program initiated by Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc., the producers of the MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival, and developed in conjunction with the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD). Reception for the Artists August 7, 2009 6 - 9PM The vision of the Art on Tour program was for the students to learn how to work within a budget of $10,000, negotiate purchases and curate artwork being sold by the invited artists at the 2007 and 2008 MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival. They structured their vision around the 2 themes: "Interpretations of Life" and "Fantasy and Reality." They visited the Festival to view the artwork first-hand, discuss the artwork with the artists and to directly negotiate the sale of the art from the artists themselves. • Holding Light Hostage August 7 - August 30, 2009 Reception for the Artists In this single large gallery space, Shelby Adams, Mary Palko, Kay Granger, Cathy Upp, Judy Cross and Brad Watson present their oil on canvas studies as six mini- shows. Each of these artists is related in medium and a love for the expressive power and beauty of paint. Nonetheless, each approaches the canvas with distinctly different methods and ideas. From amorphous abstraction with knife and brush to aggressively stroked impressionism and tight realist studies each of these six painters explores the potential of oil color to represent thought, emotion, object and place. August 7, 2009 6 - 9PM • Natal Homing August 7 - August 30, 2009 Natal Homing [neyt-l hoh-ming], is the observable behavior of an animal when it returns to the place where it was born. Artists Mary Becker, Jill O'Brian, Trish Igo and Christina Kay Garza-Mitchell create objects and imagery that reflect their personal stories. They each explore their relationship with their own history, the people that inhabit it and their connection to the objects that surround them. Reception for the Artists August 7, 2009 6:00PM - 9:00PM • TAC Featured Artist, Julie Lyon: Presidential Portraits Through August 30, 2009 Julie Lyon has created a series of presidential portraits as pastel drawings on fabric. Inspired by the recent election process, she had worked on a hand- made quilt with many patriotic patterns, slogans and colors. Using the same material as a background, she recreated the Obama inauguration. After capturing the inauguration scene, she has continued in a similar vein by depiciting a number of other presidents in the same style.
