January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month and is an important time to spread awareness about this disease. In 2013 it was estimated that 2.7 million in the United States over the age of 40 had glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects that this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030 or about a 58 percent increase. Those of Hispanic, African-American and Asian are at an increased risk for this sight stealing disease, additionally a middle-aged and elderly are affected by the most common forms of the disease. What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without any signs of the disease. As much as 40 percent of our sight can be lost to Glaucoma without even knowing it. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is also known as “the sneak thief of sight” disease because of its lack of symptoms and once the sight is lost it is permanent. What can you do and how can Healthchoice help? The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma and other eye diseases is to have a yearly comprehensive eye exam (including dilation) with a vision professional. Report any symptoms you may be experiencing to the doctor so a proper examination and treatment can begin as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding your vision coverage, please remember that Healthchoice is not the vision provider. Direct all questions to Humana Vision Care Plan @ 1-866-537-0229. Confirming Your Medical Plan Premium Discount For 2014 If you are eligible for the medical plan premium savings after completing the biometric screenings, health risk assessment and flu shot this fall, please be sure to check your first pay statement in the 2014 benefit year. All team members will need to know what the original medical plan premium they would have been expected to pay to determine if they are receiving the discount. Check your benefit selection or the chart on page 33 in the Focus On Benefits booklet found on the HR page of SWIFT to verify that amount. Discounts will appear to be either $5,$10 or $15 less the original medical plan premium amount expected to be paid by the team member. There will be no separate deduction shown on the statement for completing the biometric screening, HRA, Flu shot, or having a cholesterol and/or triglyceride level within range. If you have questions or concerns regarding your discount, please contact 321.841.8623 for the Human Resources Solutions Center.
