Information Literacy Instruction and IVYTILT
Knowing how to navigate the world of information via the Library’s website and to utilize its many quality information
resources in research work is a critical part of student success at Ivy Tech. Acquiring these information literacy skills is
important for a student’s future success in the work world and for life-long learning needs as well.
IVYT Freshman Seminar classes provide students their first library instruction experience. Classes with a research
component in English Composition, sociology, nursing, business and other programs build on that experience with further
in-depth instruction.
Our number one job is to help students learn how to find the academic resources they need to for their course work. We can
tailor instruction to any class taught at Ivy Tech. To request an instruction session, fill out the Library Instruction Form on
the Library home page, listed under Faculty Resources.
IVYTILT is our new tutorial updated this year. This has six interactive modules: “Starting Smart”, “Choosing a Topic”,
“Using IvyCat”, “Finding Articles”, “Using the Web”, and “Citing Sources.” This is a great learning and assessment tool!
As an instructor, these modules can easily be embedded into your Blackboard course or accessed from the Library’s website.
Media Equipment
Most classrooms are equipped with ceiling mounted LCD projectors and DVD drives. The library has available other
A-V equipment the faculty may need for group check-out use in the classrooms.

Overhead projectors
TV/VCRs
DVD Players
Laptops and LCDs
Elmo display units (at Gary and Valparaiso)
How to Reserve Media Equipment
o
Provide advance notice (at least one day or more) by calling or coming by the library. Let staff know type of
equipment needed, time needed, and classroom number. Library staff will reserve equipment accordingly as is
available.
o
Come approximately one half hour before class to pick up your equipment. At Valparaiso, to use the ceiling
mounted projectors in your classrooms, come to the library to borrow the remotes.
o
Return equipment to library same day, after class period is over.
o
Faculty ARE responsible for the safekeeping and security of media equipment when borrowed. Do not allow
students to deliver equipment back and forth from library.
o
If assistance is needed with special equipment set-up, such as Laptops/LCD units, or Elmo display unit, please let
library tech on your campus know several days in advance. Either the library tech or Campus IT technician will
follow up with setting up the equipment for you.
o
For media equipment taken off campus, permission will be needed from the campus President’s Office.
o
The Valparaiso library has a media retrieval system that can electronically transport many timeless VHS tape
contents to your classroom. DVDs can be shown on screen from the instructor’s computer workstation.
Computer Labs
o
Each library now has a computer lab area INSIDE its library, with 15 to 20 computers or more. Renovations in
2014 at the Michigan City and East Chicago libraries doubled the number of computers available to students and
staff. The library staff assists students one-on-one with navigating the web, using the Library’s website, and more.
o
At least one group study room per library is equipped with a computer and ceiling mounted LCD projector for
small group presentations or collaborative student study groups accommodating 6- 8 people at a time. Please
reserve ahead.
o
The Gary library has TWO computer labs
o
Within the library, the lab and perimeter have 24 computers.
o The Computer Lab ANNEX has 22 computers, located around the corner near the front building
entrance. For special class group needs the ANNEX may be reserved, only if NO other classroom is
available. Request its special use during the ANNEX lab’s off-times with the Library Director.
o
All library computer labs are considered OPEN labs, not for regular classroom use.
o
If you need special software loaded for your students to have access to, please let library personnel know. Either
the library tech or campus IT technician will load it.
Wireless Access
Wireless access is now available in each of the Northwest libraries. All you need is your Campus Connect username and
password to log into the network. If you experience any difficulties, please see your campus IT department for assistance.

Recommendation for Purchase
Contact your campus librarian to make a recommendation for purchase. The Regional Library Director or campus staff will
first check to see if we have similar materials in the collection to bring to your attention. If not, then the Regional Library
Director/campus librarian will search a number of sources to find suitable materials to purchase, looking for currency,
desirable length, and quality. Materials are ordered from the regional library center, received and cataloged there, and sent
to that library for final processing.
Interlibrary Loan
If a library does not have the material you need, you can make an interlibrary loan request at the Information Desk. The
librarian will research where it can be found and request it. If the material is available at another Northwest library, please
allow at least 3 days. If unavailable regionally or via other Ivy Tech libraries, allow at least 2 to 3 weeks.
