Mod ern Adventurer
If you hear the name Steve Fossett, think "adventurer." Fossett is an
industrious
pilot, sailor, and balloonist. He has put himself in one
precarious
situation after another. Although some accomplish great
outrageous
feats in an
fashioo, Fossett is a qui et, modest person.
3
Fossett has set new world records in many flying and sailing missions. For
conscientious
international crew
example, he and his determined and
4
sailed around the world
in
2004. They made
that
strenuous
Journey
and beat the previous record by almost six days! Never one to be
self-conscious
about being one of the world's best-known modern
adventurers, Fossett announced to the public after that victory that he would
pull back from international speed sailing. Instead, he would concentrate on
flying. Whether this was a
spontaneous
or planned decision is
7
unknown. To accomplish many feats one after the other, he must make some
simultaneous
plans-ending one project while beginning another.
ingenious
In March of 2005, Fossett piloted an
aircr aft built
especially for a round-the-world, nonstop flight. He took off
from Salinas Municipal Airport, and 67 hours, 2 minutes,
and 38 seconds later, the legendary pilot made a perfect
landing.
It was a
gorgeous
sight! Fossett had
10
established the record for the first solo round-the-world
flight without stopping or refueling in an atrcrafb.
But it was certainly not
luxurious
inside the
11
aircraft. Fossett was crammed into a tiny 7-foot-7-inch
cockpit, he lived on diet milkshakes, and he could only take
brief naps. The flight, due to its length, would have been
tedious
for many. But for Steve Fossett, it was a dream come true.
12
What's next for Fossett? Watch the headlines! We'll hear about this
determined adventurer again.
