The Student Health Center (SHC) is an on-campus health care facility where all degree-seeking,
registered Vanderbilt students may receive care. The SHC provides primary care services and
mental health care services similar to those that you would expect to find in a private physician's
office.
Services include acute care, routine physical exams, chronic disease management, gynecological
exams, emergency contraception, birth control, confidential HIV and STD testing, international
travel consultations, immunizations, allergy shots, and mental health services. Specialty services
include dieticians, sports medicine, and dermatology.
All incoming students must complete a health questionnaire, comply with immunization
requirements, and make decisions regarding student health insurance during the summer.
Psychological & Counseling Center
Road to Vanderbilt page: 43
Website: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/pcc/
Phone: (615) 322-2571
The Vanderbilt University Psychological and Counseling Center offers a range of services to the
university community (full-time Vanderbilt students, faculty, and staff, as well as their partners
and dependents). These services include individual, group, family and child, and couples
psychotherapy; vocational testing; LD/ADHD assessment; community outreach; organizational
consulting; and more.
Counselors are available at the PCC if you need someone to talk with. They help with such issues
as depression, eating and body image, stress, grief, study/test-taking problems, academic major
or career indecision, or anything else you want to speak with someone about. There are no
session limits, and there are no fees for students for counseling. Over the course of a year,
approximately 10 percent of the Vanderbilt student body will seek out the services of the PCC.
If you are unsure about whether to make an appointment, or are simply interested in self
exploration, we encourage you to check out the Confidential Online Self-Reflections section of
our website. You can complete a confidential survey on any of 17 different psychological topics
that will likely help you to clarify an issue you might be struggling with.
Throughout the year, the PCC staff also produces outreach presentations, including educational
programs, thematic presentations, and special events, focused on such topics as stress reduction,
eating and body image issues, study skills, time management, depression, personal growth, and
others related to healthy living and responsible decision-making. The PCC is proud to provide a
program focusing on suicide prevention and mental health awareness on college campuses called
MAPS: Mental Health Awareness and the Prevention of Suicide. The entire PCC staff works with
the Vanderbilt community to raise awareness about these important issues.

Common Place — The Road to Vanderbilt
This office promotes good citizenship and encourages honesty, accountability, responsibility,
integrity, and respect among Vanderbilt students through education, compliance with behavioral
standards, and support of individual rights.
Vanderbilt University values the health, safety, and well-being of students and other members of
the university community. The policies and regulations that apply to student conduct at
Vanderbilt are informed by these principles along with a focus on academic and personal
success. Our goal in establishing conduct policies and holding students accountable for
complying with them is to help students understand how their choices can affect not only their
immediate neighbors, but also the residential community as a whole.
Students and student organizations are expected to comply with all university rules of conduct.
Standards of conduct are derived from tradition and evolve with contemporary practice. Grounds
for discipline cannot always be the subject of precise statement; however, when commonly held
standards of conduct are broken, disciplinary action must be taken if the university community is
to be sustained.
What students may expect of each other, and the principles that form the basis of what the
University expects of students, are articulated in the Community Creed, the seven values that
unite Vanderbilt University.

The Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center (BJJBCC) represents one of Vanderbilt
University's numerous efforts at acknowledging and promoting diversity. The BJJBCC does so by
providing educational and cultural programming on the black experience for the entire
Vanderbilt community. Dedicated in 1984, the center is named for the first African-American
student admitted to Vanderbilt University in 1953, Bishop Joseph Johnson (B.D., 1954; Ph.D.,
1958).
One of the Center's aims is to provide cultural programming, including lectures, musical
performances, art exhibitions, films, and discussions on African and African-American history
and culture. The Center also provides an office space for the scholarly journal, Afro-Hispanic
Review, edited by Vanderbilt faculty and graduate students.
Another of the Center's aims is student support and development. The Center provides meeting
spaces for numerous Vanderbilt student groups, including the Black Student Alliance, the
Muslim Student Association, and Vanderbilt Spoken Word. The Center works with students on a
wide range of campus projects and community service opportunities. It also serves as an
informal haven for students, with plenty of opportunities for fellowship and food.

Common Place — The Road to Vanderbilt
One additional aim of the Center is community outreach and service. To this end, the BJJBCC
facilitates tutoring and mentoring activities for young people from Metropolitan Nashville Public
Schools, the YMCA, and other community agencies. Vanderbilt students serve as tutors and
mentors. The center also helps promote student recruitment by hosting various pre-college
groups.
The Center houses a computer lab, a small library, a seminar room, an auditorium, a student
lounge area, and staff offices. It is open to all Vanderbilt students, faculty, and staff for programs
and gatherings.
