COURSE DESCRIPTION
UNIV 1001 is a course designed to help you to successfully transition to the
University of New Orleans. This includes multiple components, including but not
limited to; academic, personal, and social changes experienced throughout the
first year. In this course, we will discuss topics that will help you academically
while encouraging you to become involved in campus activities and events.

PEER MENTORS
As an added resource for first year students, each section of UNIV will have a
Peer Mentor. This upper class student will attend all UNIV classes and assist the
instructor in facilitating the seminar. The Peer Mentor serves as a resource for
questions about classes, social activities, and New Orleans cultural/academic
life, and helps make the first year at UNO a more successful and enjoyable
experience.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students in this course will:




Develop skills to manage time, well being, and personal resources
Develop learning strategies to manage the University of New Orleans
academic environment
Gather information on campus resources that support academic growth
and development as UNO community members.
Integrate information concerning career exploration, community service,
wellness, and involvement to become a successful, well-rounded student

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Text: The required text is The Essential Guide to Becoming a Master Student, 3rd
ed. ISBN: 978-1-285-08099-4. This text will be given to you on your first day
of class. Many of the required class activities, assignments, and lectures will be
obtained from the readings. The textbook is required for each class.
Computer Access: Each student is required to obtain a UNO LAN account for
access to e-mail and Moodle. Students MUST use their UNO Email account.
Moodle: Moodle is an online tool that will be used for discussion boards, posting
assignments, and announcements. You will need to familiarize yourself with this
feature.
Class Attendance / Participation: Because this is a heavily discussion-based
course your attendance and participation at each class meeting are required.
You will earn an attendance and participation grade worth 10 points for each
class**, and missing a class will earn you an automatic zero for that day. Also,
students missing three or more classes due to unexcused absences will earn an
automatic F in the course. In order to get your absence excused contact your
professor beforehand.
If you miss 3 classes with UNEXCUSED absences you will fail this course!
ASSIGNMENTS**
UNO Resource Passport: Complete the passport by visiting each of the offices
listed in the booklet, answering the included questions, and obtaining a business
card or flyer with contact information for that office. (20 points)
Weekly Reflections***: Almost every week you will submit a written or video
reflection on the topic discussed in class. These reflections will be due before the
next class meeting. (10-15 points each)
Convocation: All UNIV 1001 students are required to attend New Student
Convocation at the beginning of the fall semester. (10 points)
Instructor Meetings: You will be required to meet with your instructor during
their office hours or by appointment at least once during the semester. These
meetings will serve as a time for you and your instructor to evaluate your
progress in the course as well as to address any concerns you may have
regarding your transition to UNO. (5 points each)
Peer Mentor Activities: Your Peer Mentor will organize one or more out of class
activities during the course of the semester. You are required to attend at least
one of these activities and must sign in with your Peer Mentor in order to get
credit for completing this requirement. (5 points each)

Privateer Plunge: You are required to sign in and participate at 6 Privateer
Plunge events. These events take place during the first six weeks of the fall
semester and an updated schedule of events can be found at
http://www.uno.edu/fyt/privateerplunge.aspx. To complete this assignment you
must attend three events in the UNIV track and three additional events of your
choice. (5 points each, 30 points total)
UNIV Culminating Experience: TBD (10 points)
Final Project: Your instructor will provide further details on your assignment. (50
points)
SEMINARS
Attendance at several out of class workshops and seminars are required as part
of your grade in the course. Each program is offered at several different times for
your convenience. Some of these seminars may also count towards your
Privateer Plunge assignment.
Common Read Events: You must attend at least 1 of the following events. (10
points)


Book Club Meetings – Join your fellow students as well as a faculty or
staff facilitator to discuss the various themes and highlights of This I
Believe. Each meeting below has a different topic. Sign up online to
reserve a space in the topic that you find most interesting.
Common Read Essay & Speech Contest – Finalists for our Common
Read Essay contests will present their essays as a speech
Course Registration / WebStar Workshop: Registration for spring courses
opens in the beginning of November. Make sure that you’re on track for next
semester by attending one of these workshops put on by the First Year
Experience. You’ll get a refresher on how to use WebStar to register for your
classes, and FYE counselors and student leaders can help you register while you
are there. (10 points)
Peer Mentor Panel: Attend one of the two Peer Mentor Panels offered where
UNIV Peer Mentors will answer your questions about being a successful student
at UNO. (10 points)
