200 7-08 Annual R epor t
Dear Friends of UMKC Athletics,
On behalf of the UMKC Athletics Department, I want to
thank you for your continued support of the Kangaroos.
The generosity of so many great supporters has made the
future bright for UMKC Athletics.
In reviewing this annual report, you will see that we’ve
made strides since my arrival in building a more wellrounded, comprehensive athletics program. We will continue this process in an effort to bring championships to
Kansas City to make our community proud to host the
Kangaroos.
Since my arrival, I’ve been committed to putting together a group of quality head
coaches to lead and mentor our student-athletes. I feel like our comprehensive
group of coaches is unrivaled within our league, and we are excited about where
our programs are headed.
Our men’s golf team had a strong season in which they compiled seven topthree finishes, which culminated with a runner-up showing at the Summit
League Championships. Additionally, our men’s tennis and men’s soccer programs both qualified for the league tournament.
On the hardwood, men’s coach Matt Brown and women’s coach Candace
White-Whitaker both began laying the foundation for future successes in their
programs. I can’t say enough about these two individuals as we move forward.
This year has seen the continued improvement in the upgrade of facilities. The
Durwood Foundation pledged a $5 million gift for the construction of a new oncampus soccer stadium that will be one of the finest in The Summit League and
the midwest.
We also were able to renovate our men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball
locker rooms to give our student-athletes a place to call their own. It is the start
of many exciting facility projects in the coming months and years.
Please join me as we look back to the accomplishments of this past year, made
possible by your support. Thanks again for helping our student-athletes have a
first-class experience during their time in Kansas City.
Go Kangaroos!

UMKC IN THE C OMMUNIT Y
More than 120 Kansas City-area youth took part in the second annual UMKC Athletics Trunk-or-Treat in October. Sponsored by the
UMKC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, this event offered a safe
and fun venue for trick-or-treating, in the front lawn at Swinney
Recreation Center.
In addition to the candy, which was dispensed from the trunks of the
student-athletes' cars, there were several fun games and activities
for kids to participate in, including pumpkin bowling, pin the eyes on
the jack-o-lantern and a mummification station.
The UMKC Athletics Department has been heavily involved with
Harvester’s. Last year, several teams, including the track and field
and volleyball teams, volunteered at the food bank, where they
assisted in sorting and organizing product.
Three teams - volleyball, women’s basketball and softball - all held
Think Pink events for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help raise
breast cancer awareness this past season.
The volleyball team held an event to honor former Assistant AD
Cynthia Gabel, who passed away last year after a lengthy battle with
cancer.
The women’s basketball team sponsored a Think Pink event during
its season, and the softball team wore pink jerseys and socks for a
home series in April.
The UMKC men's basketball team took a time-out to visit the Negro
League Baseball Hall of Fame in April in Kansas City. The Kangaroos
took a guided tour of the museum to learn more about the rich history of the league.
The Kangaroos were guided throughout the tour by Bob Kendrick,
the museum's Director of Marketing. The team was given the opportunity to experience the story of the Negro Leagues and those who
played an important role in its history. The team enjoyed stories of
some of the greatest athletes America has ever seen including
Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, John "Buck" O'Neil, James "Cool Papa"
Bell, Oscar Charleston and many more.

of the Dr. Henry A. Mitchell/People-to-People Award. This honor
is presented annually to the UMKC basketball player that most
exemplifies Dr. Mitchell’s qualities of friendship, enthusiasm,
sportsmanship and humanitarianism.
Men’s golf senior Stephen Clark and women’s basketball sophomore Chazny Morris (pictured above with Director of Athletics Tim
Hall) took home the fifth annual Circle of Champions Award. This
honor is presented to the best overall male and female studentathletes, and it is based solely on the individual’s athletic performance.

through persistence and determination has been an inspiration to
others. Often times, this recipient has overcome a severe injury or
has suffered from a severe personal hardship.
Men’s tennis sophomore Dennis Schwarz and volleyball sophomore Jamie Hagerman received the Dutton Brookfield Award.
The honor is presented annually to a talented student-athlete who
demonstrates great potential for the future.

NEW ATHLETICS IDENTIT Y
After putting a pair of logos
to a vote, the
U M K C
Athletics
Department
announced
in
early
May that the
new
full
body
Kangaroo has been
chosen as the new athletics
logo. The logo will be put into place in the fall at
the start of the 2008-09 school year.
“I am very pleased with both the process and outcome of this initiative,” said UMKC Director of
Athletics Tim Hall at the time of the announcement. “From the outset, comprehensive collaboration and inclusion were at the forefront. The
significant response from all of our constituencies was refreshing. We look forward to further
partnering with all of these groups, in the fall, to
aggressively advance the new brand for UMKC
Athletics.”
winning full body Kangaroo received 59 percent
or 1,286 votes, while the boxing glove Kangaroo
(Option 2) received 41 percent or 903 votes.
Bernstein-Rein, a locally based advertising company in Kansas City, was challenged to develop
an identity that encapsulated a strong competitive edge and a fierce attitude. The conceptual
approach for the Roo icon and the typography
was to establish a sense of motion and direction.
The winning Roo icon utilizes one of its most
iconic poses - the side profile in mid stride. Its
eyes are focused and drive with an added snarl
to its attitude.
The creative designer took inspiration from the
classic blue school color and modified it slightly.
They then created a darker more intense blue
than that of the previous and black was also
added as a secondary option to the color palette.
The addition of black adds strength and creates
a bolder presence. There is also a great urban
quality to the design that compliments our campus and its juxtaposition in the city.
When given the opportunity to vote nearly 2,200 Fans will have the opportunity to purchase their
supporters voiced their opinion online and at the UMKC adidas apparel with the new athletics logo
campus voting stations from April 21-25. The in the fall of 2008.

EXTERN AL SUPPOR T
KANGAROO ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (KASF)
The Kangaroo Athletics Scholarship Fund (KASF) launched in September 2007 in order to provide private resources to
support the student-athletes of UMKC. These gifts go to support tuition, room, board, books, medical costs, travel
expenses, and more for the over 180 student-athletes who compete as Kangaroos.
Donors receive numerous benefits for their generosity, dependent on their total donation. The popular “Kangaroo Club”
pre-game hospitality party was upgraded and was made available to all donors at $250 and above, along additional benefits for donors ranging from $100 to $10,000.
Over $130,000 was raised in the KASF’s first year with over 115 Kangaroo supporters participating.
FORMER STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSOCIATION
June 2008 saw the launch of the UMKC Kangaroos Former Student-Athlete Association. Designed to reunite and reconnect UMKC letterwinners, the group saw more than 40 former Kangaroos sign up within days of the announcement of
this group, including members from Argentina and Taiwan.
Team reunions are planned for all sports in the upcoming year, emphasizing a re-connection to UMKC, to the team with
which they participated, and to their former teammates. Members will also receive complimentary admissions to all
UMKC Athletics contests, a special gift featuring the new Kangaroo logo, and special communications from the Former
Student-Athlete Association.
ATHLETICS FOUNDATION BOARD
The Athletics Department’s fund raising efforts are aided greatly by the Athletics Foundation Board. The board serves
the department in an advisory capacity and assists the program by aiding in the development of external support.

Stanley H. Durwood Stadium
In April, UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall
announced that the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation
and its trustees Raymond F. Beagle, Jr. and Charles
J. Egan pledged a $5 million gift to the UMKC
Athletics Department for the construction of a new
soccer stadium in the heart of UMKC’s Volker campus.
The Foundation’s leadership gift represents the
largest single commitment ever made to UMKC
Athletics. The competition venue of the Stanley H.
Durwood Stadium is anticipated to be completed for
the new UMKC women’s soccer program’s first game
in 2009. The entire complex is slated to open in the
spring of 2010.
The facility will provide the Kangaroos with one of
the top soccer facilities in the Summit League and the
Midwest. In addition to serving the student-athletes,
the facility will play home to student intramurals, and
it will also host approved community partners. The
Durwood Foundation trustee Ray Beagle speaks as a

signature facility also calls for the construction of locker rooms and offices that will benefit the UMKC men’s
and women’s soccer, softball and men’s and women’s
track and field programs. It also will feature a premier
four-lane track and a concession area.
Stan Durwood was one of the University’s and the
athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with UMKC began when NCAA Division I participation was a pipe dream. Durwood’s enthusiasm for
UMKC Athletics continued through admission into
Division I and the Mid-Continent Conference. In 1994,
he was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal, the highest
non-academic honor the University can bestow upon
a community member.
Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholarship for UMKC student-athletes. The Durwood
Foundation has also been and continues to be
involved in number UMKC initiatives.

UMKC Locker Room Renovations
The UMKC men’s and women’s basketball (top three pictures) and volleyball locker room (bottom

space was gutted and completely re-modeled to give the Kangaroos some of the finest locker rooms
in The Summit League.
Along with providing each student-athlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features
a players lounge that includes leather couches, and a big screen television. Additionally, the lounge
is equipped with a computer work station with a high-speed Internet connection.
