One day of summer school is equal to approximately one week of regular school. Parents are asked not to make vacation plans which conflict with summer school dates. • Students who are absent in excess of three (3) days, EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, will be withdrawn from summer school. • Three tardies or three early dismissals will be counted as one absence, regardless of the amount of time involved. Any tardy after 10:30 a.m. or any early dismissal prior to 10:30 a.m. will be counted as a half-day absence. • There can be NO EXCEPTIONS to this requirement, REGARDLESS OF THE REASONS. MAKE-UP WORK: • Make-up work applies ONLY to EXCUSED absences. Obviously, there is no opportunity to make up work beyond three (3) days because if a student misses more than 3 days, excused or unexcused, he/she is withdrawn. (See Attendance and Tardy Requirements above.) • In order to be able to make up work on any of the three days allowed, students must bring a valid note signed by a parent or guardian stating the reason for absence. CUMULATIVE TESTS: • Students will not be allowed to take cumulative tests early or to make up these tests after the testing period. DISCIPLINE: • Summer Academy 2015 is a privilege, not a requirement. There is much to be done in a compressed time frame and, therefore, little time for behavior problems. • Students referred to the summer administrator for violations of discipline may be withdrawn from Summer Academy. • Copies of the Summer Academy 2015 discipline regulations will be distributed on the first day of the summer session to be signed by both the student and a parent or guardian and returned to the school. Residents and non-residents will follow Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct. REFUND PROVISIONS: • No refunds will be given after June 25, 2015. • Henrico County Public Schools reserves the right to cancel classes for which there is insufficient enrollment. Refunds will be given for courses which are not offered due to insufficient enrollment. • When a class reaches its maximum enrollment, registrations will be returned in reverse date order. • No refunds will be authorized for students withdrawn for disciplinary reasons or excessive absences. RESTRICTIONS: • Only students who have successfully completed Grade 8 may enroll in the high school Summer Academy courses. • Online summer courses are not intended for student recovery. Transportation will be provided to each middle school summer location. Buses will pick up students at the elementary schools and locations listed below. Parents must supervise students while on school property. It is not the responsibility of the school division to supervise students that are dropped off early and picked up late at the elementary locations. Economics and Personal Finance Offerings through Longwood University for Henrico County High Schools There are two options, both of which will run from June 15 - July 11, 2015. Both options require that students take their final exam on Longwood University’s campus July 11, 2015 from approximately 8AM-1PM. Economics and Personal Finance is a 4-week rigorous and mathematically intensive course covering economics and personal finance that may require students to spend up to 6 hours per day in order to be successful. The course satisfies the state economics and personal finance requirements and the online experience and certification requirements for high school graduation. The W!SE pre and post exams are administered in the course. Students will receive Longwood/college credit for this class. Students who successfully complete this class with a C or better and later enroll in Longwood University as a degree-seeking student will receive a 3-credit scholarship. FINA 250-01 - Honor’s Academy The Honor’s Academy option follows the same format as the hybrid option but provides students the opportunity to gain the full college experience by living on Longwood University’s campus for the last week of class (July 5 - July 11). This option allows students to interact with faculty, industry executives and other Longwood students while being exposed to projects that are centered on complex and real-world problems. This option requires a separate application process which includes a personal essay and obtaining at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher/counselor. Students will be notified of their acceptance by Longwood University. FINA 250-02 - Hybrid/Online The Hybrid option will meet from 8AM-noon during the first week of class at either a centralized location or via technology (i.e. streaming video). The remainder of the class will be offered in an asynchronous online format. Registration deadline: May 1, 2015 Tuition: $400.00 Technology Fee: $50.00 Registration forms for both courses can be found at http://www.henrico.k12.va.us/instruction/ summeracademy.html Registration deadline: March 13, 2015 Tuition, room and board: $1,500.00 Technology Fee: $50.00 9 HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER ACADEMY 2015 HIGH SCHOOL GENERAL INFORMATION HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION TRANSPORTATION: • The school division does not provide transportation for high school students attending Summer Academy 2015. Parents of high school students are responsible for reliable transportation to and from school. ATTENDANCE AND TARDY REQUIREMENTS: Attendance during Summer Academy 2015 is very important. One day of summer academy is equal to approximately one week of regular school. Parents are asked not to make vacation plans which conflict with summer academy dates. • Students who are absent in excess of three (3) days, EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, will be withdrawn from summer school for one-credit classes. Only one absence is allowed for semester classes including driver education. These attendance and tardy requirements are not meant to be punitive. All schools must maintain and enforce a minimum number of student hours per class in order to retain their accreditation. High school students should register at the home-base school beginning April 1, 2015 and no later than June 4, 2015 as certain regular summer classes will close (i.e. Physical Education, Driver Education, etc.). See page 11 for online courses registration dates. ALL CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO THE HOMEBASE SCHOOL WITH STUDENT’S NAME AND SUMMER ACADEMY SITE ON THE CHECK. CHECKS WILL BE DEPOSITED DAILY. Registration for regular summer courses based on space available will be held at each home school on the following dates: Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2015, 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. No registrations will be accepted after June 17, 2015. Tuition payment is required upon registration. NO STUDENT MAY BE ENROLLED IN THE SUMMER ACADEMY WITHOUT THE WRITTEN APPROVAL OF HIS/HER HOME SCHOOL COUNSELOR. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER JUNE 25, 2015. SPACE AVAILABLE ONLY. HIGH SCHOOL RESTRICTIONS MAKE-UP WORK: • Make-up work applies ONLY to EXCUSED absences. Obviously, there is no opportunity to make up work beyond three (3) days because if a student misses more than 3 days, excused or unexcused, he/she is withdrawn. (See Attendance Requirements above.) • In order to be able to make up work on any of the three days allowed, students must bring a valid note signed by a parent or guardian stating the reason for absence. EXAMS: • Students will not be allowed to take exams early or to make up exams after the exam period. Exams are given on the last day of the course. DISCIPLINE: • Summer Academy 2015 is a privilege, not a requirement. There is much to be done in a compressed time frame and, therefore, little time for behavior problems. • Students referred to the summer administrator for violations of discipline may be withdrawn from Summer Academy. • Copies of the Summer Academy Discipline Regulations will be distributed on the first day of the summer session to be signed by both the student and a parent or guardian and returned to the school. Residents and non-residents will follow Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct. REFUND PROVISIONS: • No refunds for regular summer courses will be given after June 25, 2015. • No refunds will be given to students who drop online summer courses. 10 Online summer courses are not intended for student recovery. Only students who have successfully completed Grade 8 may enroll in the high school Summer Academy courses. Only graduating seniors can take 2 site-based classes. HIGH SCHOOL COURSES TAKEN DURING THE SUMMER WILL BE CALCULATED IN THE STUDENT’S G.P.A. ONLY ELIGIBLE STUDENTS FROM HENRICO COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS MAY PARTICIPATE IN THE THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2015 GRADUATION CEREMONY AT HERMITAGE HIGH SCHOOL AT 7:00 P.M. P7-06-001 Regular High School Summer School Summer School is offered to high school students of Henrico County in order to provide educational opportunities for them to take credit courses they would not be able to schedule in the regular school program or to take such courses as may help them advance toward graduation. High school students who are not on track to graduate on time may be allowed to take two courses during summer school after review and approval by their school counselor. The summer school program shall meet state requirements for course completion. Summer SOL Testing - See information on page 9.
