Nonresidents who are not graduates of a California high school must have a minimum index of 3502 using the SAT or 842 using the ACT. Note: For consideration for some impacted majors, SJSU requires a minimum eligibility index of 3200 using the SAT or 760 using the ACT. See degree pages 6-7 for list. The CSU eligibility index is calculated by using either the SAT or ACT as follows: SAT (scores in mathematics and critical reading) + (800 x GPA) – or – (10 x ACT composite score without the writing score) + (200 x GPA) Residents of California Minimum Eligibility GPA 2.00 2.50 2.80 2.99 SAT 1300 900 660 510 ACT 30 20 14 10 3.00+ Must submit test scores. Eligible for consideration with GPA above 3.00 and necessary course requirements. Fill in the number of semester courses you have taken next to the grade you have earned. All grades earned in “a-g” courses taken in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the grade point average (GPA). Summer school courses count, including the summer between 9th and 10th grades, and excluding the summer after 12th grade. Repeated courses must be exact same course – use only the highest grade. Honors courses taken in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades (maximum of 8 semesters, of which there is a maximum of two in the 10th grade) receive one additional grade point for each A, B or C grade. STEP 2 Multiply the number of courses by the grade points per grade to get the total grade points. Grade Received The eligibility index is a weighted combination of high school grade point average during the final three years of high school and a score on either the SAT or ACT. To make a preliminary admission decision, all grades earned in “a-g” courses taken in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the high school grade point average (GPA). By taking these tests early, you will be able to attend an earlier orientation and have access to better course selection. Students must earn a “C” or better grade in English 001B prior to registering for the WST and enrolling in 100W. A “C-” grade is not acceptable. Generally two WST dates are offered in the spring, two in the summer, and two in the fall. Go to https://testing.sjsu.edu for exact dates. It is strongly recommended that students take the WST prior to registering for their first semester. Failing to pass the exam in a timely fashion may delay graduation. For details, see http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/static/soc-fall/tests.html Financial Aid Applicants Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) The cost of college should not discourage students from applying to SJSU. Financial Aid is assistance offered to you and your family to help meet the gap between what you can contribute to your education and what it costs to attend college. Financial aid can be in the form of federal grants, state grants, work-study, scholarships and loans. The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to assist students who are historically disadvantaged because of their economic and educational backgrounds. EOP serves California residents who meet stated admissions requirements, as well as those who may not qualify for regular admission but who demonstrate potential to succeed at the university level. EOP applicants must meet low-income guidelines as designated in the EOP section of CSUMentor and must show need of financial and academic assistance. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for financial aid at SJSU. The FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov by January 2010. You should apply by the Tuesday, March 2, 2010 priority filing deadline for the upcoming Fall 2010 semester. Applications are still accepted after the March 2 date; however, many aid programs award funds based on this deadline. SJSU uses a “need-blind” admission policy and does not base admission to the university on the student’s ability to pay. 1. Apply for admission to SJSU via www.csumentor.edu. If you wish to be considered as an EOP applicant, check the EOP box on the CSUMentor application. 2. Complete the online EOP application located on the CSUMentor website. 3. You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify for consideration to EOP. If you are admitted to SJSU and you also qualify for EOP, you will receive additional support services from the university. For details, see www.sjsu.edu/eop. For details, see www.sjsu.edu/faso. The FAFSA form asks for SJSU’s six-digit code, which is 001155. Students who apply for financial aid through the FAFSA will view a personalized Student Aid Report online. Students print this report for their records. The campus financial aid office will then contact you to complete your file and will determine your financial aid eligibility. It takes about two weeks to respond to your initial application and three to four months to complete the entire process.
