CHRISTIAN COUNSELLING SERVICES WHERE HOPE HAPPENS . ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 OUR MISSION Christian Counselling Services exists to facilitate the healing power of Christ in people's lives through the provision of professional counselling services, community education, and student training. OUR VISION “We give ourselves wholeheartedly to our mission for we see a future of restored individuals living legacies of positive impact in their families, workplaces and communities.” OUR VALUES 1. Love: Dignity, respect, and compassion for each individual 2. Integrity: Trustworthiness of action 3. Excellence: Commitment to improvement in effectiveness 2013-2014 Annual Report 1 A Christian Counselling Services Success Story — Ruth Keighley TABLE OF CONTENTS 2 Message from the Board of Directors 3 Message from the Executive Director 6 Financial Overview 7 Audited Financial Statements 18 2013-2014 Staff 19 Thank you to our partners Years ago, Ruth Keighley sought help from a counsellor at Christian Counselling Services to battle the pain of addiction and depression in her life. As she began to sort through the events of her past, she discovered how the sexual abuse she had experienced as a child had profoundly affected her mental and emotional health. She sought to cover the tremendous pain by numbing out with alcohol and soon the addiction took over her life. Through the loving care offered to Ruth by a counsellor at Christian Counselling Services, Ruth slowly began to sort through the web of abuse and pain in her life and put one foot in front of the other on a path to healing. Ruth describes the counselling she received as “the foundation for the rest of my healing journey. I realized that no matter how good the treatment program was, when it didn’t offer Christ, it was limited in the amount of help it could give.” Ruth chronicles her journey in her book “Healing for an Unquiet Mind”. Ruth has now come full circle and is in the final stages of completing her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She recently completed her internship at Christian Counselling Services providing counsel and support to others in need of hope and healing. Christian Counselling Services 2 Message from the Board of Directors . 2013 will likely be described as a year of many changes and challenges. In any ministry, there are changes in staff and at the level of the Board of Directors – and Christian Counselling Services (CCS) is no exception. There were some staff this year that moved to another province, and those who made career changes, but we want to thank them for their time at CCS and we pray that the Lord will continue to guide them. These changes have had an impact on our finances, until we can backfill some posi“The Board of a Christian organization is the tions. The Lord has sustained this ministry and we are Communities of Spiritual Leaders” so grateful. Early in 2014 both the Staff and Board of Directors joined together for a retreat. This was an inspirational time, as everyone shared many things that the Lord has been doing in their lives and also what He is doing in the ministry of CCS. This was a time that the Lord brought together the team He has brought to CCS, and I can truly say that there was a strong presence of the Lord at this meeting. On behalf of the Board, we want to recognize our Director Heather Tomes for her faithful stewardship of CCS. The spiritual direction she continues to strive for is developing God’s ministry and has built the integrity of CCS within the community. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors at CCS, for their commitment and efforts this past year. We continue to work well together, and have learned together that this is the Lord’s ministry, and we are the stewards. As we look to 2014, we wait in anticipation for what the Lord will do with CCS. We continue to pray that we will have an impact within our community, and that we will see those who are hurting healed. We also continue to look for ways to improve the bottom line at CCS, and strive to stabilize our operating budgets to meet the growth and demand for our services. Your strong faith-filled leadership has contributed to the success of this past year. ~ Heather Tomes, Executive Director 2013-2014 Annual Report 3 Message from the Executive Director With the continued development at Christian Counselling Services, 2013 can best be described as a year that further solidified the foundation God is preparing at CCS for future growth and impact. Here are some of the main highlights from this past year: Professional Counselling Services: Despite staff changes in our counselling team during 2013, we are experiencing the benefit that accompanies having counsellors who are committed to CCS over the long-term and who possess a professional reputation of excellence in the provision of counselling services. When new clients were asked how they were referred to CCS over this past year, the majority of respondents indicated they were referred by a friend or family member who had personal experience with CCS. This is a tremendous complement to our counselling team. Further evidence of the impact that our counsellors are making in people’s lives comes through the overwhelmingly positive responses recorded on the feedback forms we ask clients to complete after their first counselling session. This year we impacted over 3,000 people in 2,656 counselling sessions from all walks of life and backgrounds who crossed through our doors seeking help. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to provide subsidies to 63% of the people who came to CCS for support this year. We continue to pray that other financial supporters will accept the invitation to invest in CCS so that we can continue to offer services to everyone in the community who want to come to CCS for help. Christian Counselling Services 4 Community Education: Providing accessible and practical information on important mental health topics continues to be an important part of our mission in the community. It is estimated that we reached over 350 people alone through the Lunch N Learn seminars we offered this year. This number does not include those impacted by workshops and presentations we provided to a number of churches and community organizations on topics like stress, depression, and self-esteem, nor does it include the consultation and supportive services we provided to pastors, church staff, ministry leaders, and community organizations throughout the year. Student Training: It is implicit in our mission as an organization to train future generations of Christian psychologists and counsellors, and at the same time, this allows us to reach out in the community by providing low-fee counselling services to the general public. We were fortunate to have student placements from a variety of Masters-level programs across western Canada this year and we are grateful for the impact the students have had in reaching into people’s lives with the hope and healing of Christ. Relationship-Building and Communication: Organizational health and strength is maximized when relationships are strong internally and externally. There was significant progress this year in deepening relationships both at the staff level and the board level, as well as between these two groups. Internal communication has been enhanced through daily staff prayer times and weekly prayer updates. Communication has also been strengthened with donors, prayer supporters, churches, and past clients through new initiatives by our Donor Relations Coordinator including the monthly e-newsletter, the Pastor’s Breakfast, Celebration events, and excellent printed materials that convey our mission and invite the community to join us in facilitating the healing power of Christ in people’s lives! Progress has also been made in recording statistical information and receiving written feedback from clients to enable us to more effectively document and report the important impact CCS is making in the community. To this end, we are moving forward with providing more community support groups, seminars, and a professional conference in 2014 Strategically adding to our clinical team with a focus on men’s issues, and children/youth issues Seeking out more Employee Assistance Program opportunities to strengthen our referral networks Supporting counsellors through certification and registration processes Inviting businesses, churches, and other funding partners to invest in the mission of CCS The achievements outlined in this report have only been made possible because of the guidance and direction of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who deserves all the honor, praise, and glory for His great love that moves mountains to save, rescue, redeem and restore the lives of the broken and hurting. It is because of Him that Christian Counselling Services exists. Our outreach to so many people this year has only been possible due to His sustaining grace, and the work of His Spirit in bringing people who are committed to supporting this important work. I am most grateful for the heart of Christ that truly shines through our staff team, Board of Directors, and the dedicated people who stand alongside us in committed prayer and giving. Heather Tomes, M.Ed., R.Psych. Executive Director and Registered Psychologist Christian Counselling Services Christian Counselling Services Financial Overview It is my pleasure to provide the following summary of the financial performance of Christian Counselling Services for the year ended December 31, 2013. We have seen some financial challenges this last fiscal year due to some staffing transitions and continued maintenance on our existing facility. These challenges have resulted in a substantial financial loss position. However, the 2013 fiscal year has also seen donations increase not only in amount but also in the percentage of funds received compared to the 2012 fiscal year. Costs from the 2012 fiscal year to the 2013 fiscal year have also stayed relatively consistent in amount and as a percentage of total costs. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff at Christian Counselling Services, I would like to thank all that have and continue to contribute financially to our Ministry of Hope. In 2013 I was privileged to join the staff team at Christian Counselling Services as the Donor Relations Coordinator.
