Codes and Values: Medicare will accept up to 12 characters in this field. Assign to Field 64 if Medicare is the primary payer, to Field 146 if secondary, and to Field 151 if tertiary. Medicare requirements: The format for the HIC # is dependent upon the total number of characters. For example, A123456 would be considered 7 characters and would need to meet the format for 7 characters.
