Pi is an irrational number because it does not repeat any digits in a specified sequence, and it does not end (so far as we know!). The value of Pi is considered infinite. Pi is the ratio of the distance around the outside of a circle to the distance across the circle going through the center. Pi is also a Greek symbol, part of the Greek alphabet, often used on college and university campuses. Pi is considered a CONSTANT value because it does not change regardless of the size of the circles from which it is determined. To recognize the importance of Pi, EXTRA CREDIT points will be rewarded (added to next quiz) for ONLY ONE of the following: On Friday, March 13……CHOOSE ONLY ONE… 1. WEARING any article of clothing, VISIBLY SHOWING a number or numbers that are part of Pi (this includes athletic jerseys as well). WORTH ONE times POINTS. 2. DISPLAYING (on paper, on a poster, etc.) the numerical VALUE of Pi up to at least 75 DIGITS. WORTH 2 times POINTS. 3. LOCATING YOUR BIRTHDATE (not including the year) in the sequence of digits of Pi, and indicating the location of your birthday digits. For example: If your birthday is March 23 (3/23), that sequence of numbers 323 is located at the 15th, 16th, and 17th digits (in that order) in the value of Pi. WORTH ½ OF THE BIRTHDAY DIGITS TIMES POINTS. 4. CALCULATING the value of the CIRCUMFERENCES of the United States Coins that are circles by design. WORTH ½ THE NUMBER OF COINS TIMES POINTS. 5. WRITING the RATIO of the AREA of a circle to its CIRCUMFERENCE as a VARIABLE expression (like a formula). WORTH 2 times POINTS.
