Some 23.5 miles of smooth pavement and
beautiful scenery await you on the Macomb
Orchard Trail. Built on an abandoned railroad that was originally called the Michigan
Air-Line Railway, the trail connects the
communities of Shelby Township, Romeo,
Armada and Richmond in Macomb County. The southern end of the trail connects
with the Clinton River Trail at Dequindre
Road. If you begin your journey from the
south, you will notice a changing landscape
Bridge overlooking the Clinton River east of Romeo.

that takes you on a journey from suburban
neighborhoods through wide open spaces,
long tunnels of trees, quaint country towns,
and of course, an orchard south of Romeo.
Just north of Romeo, a beautiful new bridge
over highway US-53 marks a transition
point where the trail heads east to Armada
through a mostly wooded landscape.
A bridge over the Clinton River is an
exceptionally scenic spot to stop and take
in the views. A towering grain elevator

several stores and eating places just one
block north of the trail. From Armada
to Richmond, the trail passes through
woodlands, pastures and fields of corn and
beans. A sweeping archway welcomes you
to the eastern trailhead and downtown
Richmond where you will find a bike shop
and plenty of restaurants and stores.
Stony Creek Metropark
Hike-Bike Trail
If you would like to add a few more scenic
miles to your travel plans, consider a side trip
on the Stony Creek Metropark Hike-Bike
Trail. This nicely maintained asphalt trail
takes you on a circular loop around Stony
Creek Lake with access to several nature trails
and mountain biking trails along the way.
The park also offers bike rentals. To connect
to the Hike-Bike Trail, head north on the
west sidewalk on Shelby Road where the
trail crosses the intersection of 25 Mile and
Shelby roads. About a quarter mile north,
the sidewalk transitions into the Hike-Bike
Trail and leads you into the park.
