Introduction to Accounting: Language of Business TM CD series Undergraduate Student Feedback Introduction The student comments provided below are from undergraduate students who used the Introduction to Accounting CDs and Value-Added Teaching model. You may also click here to access another document that contains comments from graduate students. We received the comments below based on a request made through the course website. The request noted the non/traditional nature of the class (no required textbook and only 8 required lectures) and the desire for frank student feedback, both pro and con, on the CDs, the required class presentations, and the course format in general. Note: The following list of responses is NOT a sample of the best comments. This document includes ALL responses (over 400), both positive and negative, and are substantially unedited and listed in the order received. Student Comments “I wish more of my classes would use this approach to learning. It is great because I can go through the material at my own pace and focus on the parts that I struggle with. I think the way Norm's class is set up facilitates a fun learning environment. It also is a way to let students take control of their learning. Thank you for this opportunity to give my thoughts on my Accounting 200 course.” “I love this class. I have learned more in this class than any other business class I have taken. The CDs are awesome because they let me view them when I have time and want to pay attention. The professor has a wonderful support system (his own office hours and the TA lab) if we need help.” “The CD's help me because I can watch them at my own pace and rewind at certain parts that are hard to understand. It is fun and good to have a different learning experience. I got a 94 % on the first test and the average was an 80. The cds seem to be working for me.” "I have absolutely loved the CDs that professor Nemrow created. I feel that it gives me the time to learn at my own speed, but still explains to me the concepts that in a book would be quite confusing. I think that the required classes are really good too - they are usually quite interesting and my knowledge about accounting and business in general has increased exponentially. Overall I think that this is a wonderful class that all students should be required to take and I think that Professor Nemrow is an excellent teacher." I think the cd's give an extremely informative presentation of the class material. I enjoy the option the cds give of reviewing concepts until I have a full comprehension rather than sitting in a lecture trying to take notes sufficient to cover all the presented material. The required classes are very applicable and provide a good real-life supplement to the course material. DON'T CHANGE A THING!!!!! "I love the class and believe that it is an effective way to teach. The CDs allow me to learn when and where I learn best. I find that for me this is a very effective. The class presentations have been awesome because they allow many students who are not going into business to be able to gather a basic knowledge about the accounting profession and issues that are out there. I highly recommend this course and feel that I have truly learned the language of business." "I love the CD's. It has been the same as a lecture to me except this way I don't fall asleep. I am able to go at my own pace but the workload is sufficient to more than keep me busy. It would be great if more teachers would follow this format. There is still student teacher interaction at our required classes but I no longer have to put up with a rigid set schedule. My only annoyance with the cds is that sometimes Professor Nemrow rambles and there is no way to skip that. However, I don't have to deal with millions of nonessential questions that put a class behind schedule and leave me ill prepared for an exam. When I have had questions the labs provided all the help I needed." I think the CDs are brilliant, and I think everyone in the Marriott School of Business should try to be as innovative as Norm." "I have taken several online courses, and I admit that some are very easy. Some require little effort; I even completed a course, excluding the final, three days after the semester started. This accounting class, however, is not easy. I have to work very hard for an A in this class. I think that the smartest thing about this course is that there is a schedule. I am tempted to wait till the end of the course to complete the lessons. That results in not learning a thing! But this class is evenly distributed across the semester. It also has a wide variety of activities and lessons that I find extremely useful. I find the required classes very helpful and informative. They cover so much more than just accounting. I often come home and tell my wife all of the great information I have learned from the class. I even tell my mom and family members about it. In fact, I love them so much that I brought my brother, who is visiting from NJ, to class today and he loved it too. I am not lying or exaggerating at all. You can call me and I will tell you how great this class is, especially compared to the other online classes that I have taken. The cds are so helpful, because I don't have to waste time commuting to class. I believe also that I still get the same great information. Instead of waiting after class to ask questions, I can rewind. If there is confusion I can go and see the professor during office hours or to the TA lab.” I love this class. I have learned more in this class than any other business class I have taken. The CDs are awesome because they let me view them when I have time and want to pay attention. The professor has a wonderful support system (his own office hours and the TA lab) if we need help. "I think that the way Norm teaches ACC200 is brilliant. On the CD's we can get to them when we want to and are reinforced to pay attention because of the online quizzes. I go to some of my classes and fall asleep because the teacher is so boring and incapable of teaching-in the end, I might miss a class a week; however, With the CD approach we can watch it when it best suits our needs. There are sometimes that I am not be in the mood for school but I need to go and sit because my boring teacher might spout off something important once in a while. With the CD's I can watch it when I am in the mood, I can get ahead of schedule. I think that with these CD's Norm is not only teaching us accounting in a great way, but also is teaching us responsibility and time management. He provides great examples and does a great job. Norm is great at what he does and is an innovator; he has fun and is enthusiastic. He does a great job with the CD's and I bet that you will not find a student who took the class seriously and did not love the format of the class, and love Norm. My only fear is that my next teacher of accounting (210) will not be able to explain the concepts as well as Norm and will not make learning as much fun. "The CDs are the best thing anyone has done for Accounting 200. I wish that more of my classes were done this way. I took a beginning accounting class from a man who audited the IRS before becoming a teacher, and I didn't understand a single concept. I have understood nearly every concept in Brother Nemrow's class. I like the CDs because if I don't understand something I can listen again. Also, I can go at my own pace as far as the speed of the video is concerned. I DO NOT learn from books. If I took this class again from a book, I can guarantee that I wouldn't understand it and would receive a much lower grade. For those people who do learn from books, there is optional book reading section in the class packet that corresponds with the lessons on the CDs. I feel we are getting the best of both worlds to have class done this way. I really enjoy the class presentations because they are more applicable to life. I also like that we hear from different people so we can see differing opinions on certain issues. As for the course in general, I wouldn't change a thing. However, I also believe that the study sessions that Brother Nemrow conducts prior to each test are essential in my ability to tie everything in together.” "I personally think that the cds are great. We learn the material well and at a pace that works well for our learning style. We also have the option of getting a little ahead during times when the overall course load isn't too huge and are able to make cushions for the future when all teachers assign things at the same time. I learn better from the cds than in lectures and the quizzes keep us on pace. I think that this is more of a college experience than lectures because of the discipline it requires. For classes, we can't say, 'let's postpone class and play frisbee.' I've learned how to pace myself and organize my schedule more easily in addition to accounting from the cd format of learning." The CD's are a great way to learn. The class presentations are also very excellent and informative. This is the highest quality course that I have taken in all my college career.” "I like the cds. They are convenient because you can watch them according to your schedule and you can go back and review them again if there is something you missed. Also, I love the class presentations. They are very informative. I like the class very much over all." "I think that the CD's are a great way to teach a class. I also think that it is more effective. At least the way Norm has things set up. I don't think that I've had a teacher who has put more thought into how to help students learn more effectively. I think that this has been one of those most useful classes that I have taken while at BYU." I have really enjoyed Acc 200. I love that we listen to the lectures. It is very beneficial to me because I can listen at my own pace and 'rewind' or listen as many times as I need. It's also great to be able to stop the cd so I can make notes (something not at all possible in class). Through the cd's I get the textbook information and the professors comments without buying a book that many students wouldn't read anyways. "I have been really grateful for the CD viewing experience. I think that I have learned quite a bit through my viewing of these CD's and have really enjoyed each of the Required Classes so far. I feel that each has been informative and well presented, helping me better understand the business world." "Let me preface my statement by saying that I am not an accounting nor a business major but just had an interest in this class by listening to all my friends talk about what an awesome class it is. With that being said and also that I have done sub par on the first two exams I'd like to voice my opinion on the class as a whole. What I have learned in college is due primarily to the fact that I have taught myself. What I mean by that is 99% of the students at this great school will never read every assignment given to them out of every chapter. That is not learning. If I can just concentrate on what is important I can learn what I need to. The cd's offer the student the opportunity to go back to a lecture as many times as they want to learn the information. All most professors do is regurgitate the book. This style of teaching allows me with the luxury of hearing the same lecture 100's of times. Personally, Norm's style is awesome because he wants me to learn and he has given me all the resources to do that." "I fully support the use of the CD's for teaching the class. I feel that I have learned more because of this option. The CD's allow for greater flexibility in my schedule. Instead of being subjected to the required class times, I can freely watch and study the lessons when they are most convenient. The CD's also allow me to learn at my own pace. If I were in a classroom, I would struggle to keep up with all of the information that is presented. I would be more concerned with writing everything down, then actually learning the material. If there is a concept that I do not understand, I have the option of reviewing it until I understand it. In a traditional classroom setting, I would be forced to move on and wait to receive help. This would further hinder my learning if the concept that I did not understand were the foundation for a greater concept. The class presentations are also beneficial. I was skeptical at first about the required classes. I thought they would be boring lectures, but I was mistaken. Each of the classes has been enjoyable and educational. All through school, kindergarten to college, one of the most asked questions is, 'When will I need to use this?' These class presentations answer this question. The classes demonstrate the reality of the material. The lessons taught are not just for the sake of knowledge, but they have practical application. The classes also provide a relaxed atmosphere for the subject. To often students worry more about grades and learning class material just for a test. They fail to receive enjoyment from the class. The class presentations allow students to come and learn about the subject in a relaxing manner. The attitudes of the students' switch from just learning the material for a test, to seeing how they can apply it to their lives.” “I am very pleased with the course. At first I was a little apprehensive about taking it. I had heard some good things and some bad things about it. I am pleased with the decision I have made to take the class. I truly believe this class, while it does not count for my major, will provide future benefit to me. I support the innovative steps Prof. Nemrow has taken in teaching Acc 200. His class is breaking the mold of the old method of teaching: textbook, class lectures, etc. I have always felt that part of a teachers responsibility is to present their material a way that will excite the students and make them want to learn more. I feel Prof. Nemrow's approach does just that. Just as technology and society change and advance, so does teaching and preparing students for the 'outside' world. Norm is doing a great job at it. The manner in which the accounting 200 class is set up with the use of cd's and the eight required classes proves to be very beneficial and more educational than most classes. "This Accounting 200 course is one of the best I've had. At first I was a little wary of the idea of watching lectures on the computer, but I found it to be beneficial. It requires more organization and responsibility on my part to remember to watch the lectures and take the quizzes. My natural instinct is to put the lectures off until there's a convenient or 'desirable' time. I've found that there really aren't many desirable times to do accounting, so I have to show self-control and do them anyway. The computer format has allowed me to pause the lecture when I need to use the bathroom or get a drink, so I'm not confused or lost when I return. It allows me to watch something again when I don't understand it well or if I wasn't paying full attention. I think the CD's are a great learning tool, as long as you have the program that allows you to play the CD faster. I would dread the CD's without this. As for the class presentation, I love them. They tend to focus more on the spiritual and practical application of accounting in the real world. They have helped me to see how the things we are learning are actually applied in the work and lives of accountants. Very few courses do that. These classes are also very entertaining and give us a chance to meet and make sure we're on task. The course in general is very well organized. I love the syllabus and instructions we receive. They are always very clear and leave no questions unanswered. I have enjoyed this course immensely and have learned more information in a shorter period of time than I believe I could have learned in a 'traditional' class." "I have greatly appreciated the CD's that have been brought into accounting 200. They have brought to life a subject that I was not really looking forward to learning about. I think that it is great that the University cares enough about the students that it looks for cost-effective ways in which to teach students. The glossary is actually useful, unlike those of many textbooks, and provides many examples to learn from. The CD's provide students like myself, the ability to repeat difficult subjects without slowing down the class by asking many questions. TA's are available for help when needed. The CD's also allow for students to watch the cd's at times that are most convenient, and allow them to work with their already hectic schedules. The CD's also provide Professor Nemrow to free up time in which he can help students. The eight required classes have been great, in that they provide alternative approaches to accounting material. They go further in depth, and are structured in a way that helps the students." "The CD's are not only an excellent learning tool, they are excellent information resources. I have a brother who graduated top in his accounting class from BYU recently who recommended the course. He has received top job offers and is planning on attending Harvard business. I trust his judgment as well as my own and we agree that this is a wonderful class structure that allows for learning at multiple levels and for different learning style. If the learning experience is lacking for a particular student, it is a direct reflex ion of how much effort that student put into the course, just as it is for any college class. Thank you for the opportunity to have this type of course experience. " "The CD's are great, but Norm in person is even better. I think he is the #1 reason students choose to major in accounting, aside from dreams of hitting the big time like Norm did, he has a very inviting personality. I think Norm is the type of person that can sell a freezer to an Eskimo because he is so likable, also, I see him as an excellent role model for students. So I kind of wish I could see more of Norm in person. But he doesn't get paid, so you can't really make him do more classes." Well- I think that the approach is a good one. I learn from the Cds- and I think that they maximize the efficiency of my time and the university's. "This is the best class I have taken at BYU. I really enjoy the material, which I would in any accounting class, but I think the CD's actually require more work than textbook reading and are one reason this course has been so enjoyable. I think the topics for the required classes have been well chosen and I enjoy the time we have to hear directly from accounting professionals. I love this class and feel as if I have a real connection to Professor Nemrow because he is in my living room every other day on the CDs." "Acc 200 has been the best class I have taken in my Post High-school education! What I love about the CD's as opposed to the textbook is the CDs give me the opportunity to have the lecture readily available for me. It is like having multiple classes a week, but I can take them at my convenience and if I do not understand something, I can just go back and review the section again. This combined with the accounting lab, Norm's office hours, and the class presentations, provide me with all the help I needed for this class. I cannot stress how much fun this class has been for me, and I have learned far more in this course in 1 semester about practical 'business' information than in any other of my classes.” "I find Norm's CDs to be an extremely useful learning resource. These CDs provide the luxury of repeating lectures and going through the material as quickly or slowly as each individual finds necessary in order to accurately and efficiently learn the concepts. The eight required classes are providing the present, personal applications. Excellent guest speakers as well as Norm, are helping to guide our future business decisions in the right direction. I definitely agree that the person-to-person learning is also necessary, but the eight classes are doing an excellent job of fulfilling that requirement. (Also useful to each student are the TA review sessions that occur weekly to provide students who are struggling with extra help. I appreciate Norm's efforts to upgrade the teaching techniques used at this university. I feel that this method could be instituted in many classes to provide better learning of essential concepts. These time-efficient tools are greatly appreciated. " " I absolutely love the way that this class is run. I was skeptical at first about the CDs, but I have come to realize that they are the greatest assets I have in the class. I have truly found accounting to be very interesting, and very applicable. I feel that through a traditional way of teaching this material,(text book reading) I would have been turned off to the subject before I had a chance to understand what it was all about. " "I enjoy learning accounting through the cd's because I feel as though I can grasp the material due to the fact that I can go over the lectures again. It gives me a break from reading boring textbooks and gives me an opportunity to learn in a different setting. I feel I am obtaining a decent grade in the class due to the fact of these cd's. I enjoy the eight classes that we are required to attend because they are useful and I can apply the material I learn into my everyday life. It is not like many curses that I take that have no relevance in helping me become successful in life, but these classes build me up to that level of success due to the fact that they deal with real life questions and situations we have to go through. I support this method of teaching 100%!!!!!" "I have loved my experience in accounting 200. The CD's have been a new experience and can be frustrating when they aren't working, but overall I think they are a wonderful learning tool. I have learned so much and I have been able to do it in my apartment. The CD's have enabled me to listen to the lecture without trying to worry about catching every word. If I miss something I can go back and listen to it again. There's no boring reading, and the occasional classes we do have are entertaining and very informative. I think accounting 200 is a wonderful class. I love the CD's." "I personally have often struggled with the normal teaching method. I find that a teacher will teach to the average student. Sometimes I find this level faster or slower than were I am at. If I find myself behind and ask questions I'm told to come to a review session later or talk to the TA's in a lab, if I'm ahead well I just either skip class or sit there frustrated. Textbooks offer some solution to this problem I can reread if I'm behind or I skim if I get what were learning. Unfortunately there is often more taught than what is in a book, and teachers give valuable insight into problematic areas. So although I may get most of it by reading I miss some very important tips that I need, because I may not be at the 'norm' level in the class so I miss it anyway if I go because I bored due to I'm ahead or I'm lost because I'm behind so even if I attend the class I don't get it. These CD's solve this problem they allow you to have a classroom situation where you are not only receiving text book information, but with invaluable insights from an instructor, and the most important element is you control the speed, you're not set to a norm, you go slow when your lost, and fast when you understand the concept well. It's always there to review as well. I think this system is amazing, I still feel like I'm getting the full university experience, but without the frustrations that come from large classes, and the teaching to the average student that results. I've aced both test 100% so I truly believe in this." "In the beginning I was very skeptical of the Accounting 200 CD program. Last fall, I thought, why don't I just buy the CDs and do it all ahead of time? Well, I did purchase the CDs, however, I didn't know about needing to buy the notes that accompanied them so I lost interest pretty rapidly. My next thought was to take the course at UVSC, but I found that they had a really expensive textbook and required their students to spend an exorbitant amount of time on homework that was either sink or swim type of material. Maybe this is a good approach for some people, but I was too leery to try it out, though I did sit in on about 2 dozen ACC 2010 classes over there. I found the lectures to be a simple summary of material that was in the book that no one seemed to read or even understand. The two teachers that I observed both did not seem particularly interested in their students' success. I was also there for the first test review, and no one seemed to do too spectacular. From what I remember, the test seemed quite easy compared with the first test administered by Norm. Now, a little over halfway into Norm's CD course, I feel a great sense of personal gratitude to Norm. The CDs allow for repetition and depth that seem to be difficult to achieve in a traditional setting. I have met few other faculty who have so much sincere desire to see my personal success. Regarding the 8 class lectures, I can only say I have never been so academically stimulated! Each lecture is followed by at least a few hours of research and reading about the intriguing topics. I hope that another course, later on in the Accounting Program, will offer so many specialized speakers. I come away with a great appreciation for the things taught in these sessions. " "I find the CDs for Acc 200 very informative. They really eliminate the need for a textbook b/c of their content, including numerous examples and problems for the student to try. The CDs provide us the same education as lectures would, even more considering the CD lessons are all well over 50 minutes (the length of a lecture). They are also helpful in that they let a student move @ their own pace, and review areas they are having trouble in as often as they like. I also think that the class presentations are useful in that they give us real-life applications of what we are learning on the CDs. I also think the lectures give the students an idea of what all can be in store for us when we graduate. We are shown a lot of different options, and given some great counsel. I have definitely learned a lot about not only Accounting but also the business world in general from this class. " "My experience has been that the course has strengthen my desire to pursue a career in accounting or managerial field. The style acc 200 course is taught has played a significant role how I view the profession and education of this sector. I was under the fear the people associated in this field tend to be stereotyped as boring and gray and that is how it is supposed to be. To me this fear was a real obstacle that may have prevented me from entering to this field of study, which so fascinates me. Now, by no means should you conclude that this course promotes an irresponsible, mere fun-seeking student material to apply. Vice versa. I for instance will have 4.0 cumulative GPA and am actively engaged in running my own corporation. I just feel that things can be enjoyable yet effective same time. In fact, is that not what really makes people learn -the joy it brings." "Overall, this class has been my best college experience yet.” "I believe the CDs are a great learning tool and are much more efficient and effective than the traditional process of reading a textbook and then listening to a Professor reiterate what you read. The supplementary classes allow for quality lectures on some of the current or sensitive topics relating to the class. They are an excellent addition to the Cds. I believe that most GE classes could be taught in this manner and as a result the students would receive a stronger understanding of the subject matter than they would by the traditional method." "After today's class, I was talking to my wife about the value of the Acc 200 class here at BYU. I suggested that she should take the class just to experience a new way of thinking in education. The CD's are innovative and effective, and instead of lulling the students to sleep as a traditional textbook often does, there is a sense of interaction with having Norm up there on the screen. Students can go at their own pace, and even review the lecture when needed. I have found this to be essential in my life as I try to balance school, work, and the birth of a new child. This method is an inspiration to students who pursue excellence in their own fields. The only drawback with this system is not being able to spend more time with Norm Nemrow on a personal basis. He is a giant of a man." "For me, learning from the cd's has been an excellent change to the standard classroom and textbook approach. The speed control is great in that it enables me to increase the pace of the lesson which forces me to pay closer attention to the material and also be more alert. The fact that there are notes that accompany the CD's is as good as, if not better than a standard textbook. Text books are often boring with difficult wording and do not always correspond entirely with the way the concepts are being presented in class. I have found the class notes to be extremely useful due to the fact that they go along with exactly what we are being taught; additionally Norm makes them easy to understand and to learn from, along with entertaining to keep it interesting. So far, the six required classes we have had have been excellent supplements to what we are learning from the CD's because they correspond so well. Additionally, the fact that if there is a concept I am struggling with, I can always go back and re-listen to that part of the lesson which is unlike a 'normal' class. Finally, the review sessions with Norm for the tests are very detailed and further the learning experience since he explains every topic to be covered. I truly have enjoyed this 'alternative method' to that of classroom lectures!" "The professor is great, but I don't really enjoy the CD version of the class." "The CD lesson teaching method used and implemented by Norm Nemrow in his Acc 200 class is probably the most effective and innovative approach to teaching I have seen to date. The ability to watch lectures with the accompanying lesson notes, pausing and rewinding as necessary, is almost a dream come true for any conscientious and diligent student. Most students are familiar with the frustration that accompanies trying to furiously jot down all the information that has been presented in a lecture, while still attempting to somehow miraculously pay attention to the remaining information being given. I believe that the CD aided teaching method used by Professor Nemrow far outperforms the cumbersome traditional method used in most classes. I only wish more of my classes could see the amazing potential in such a teaching method and adapt it into their curriculums. " "I have enjoyed taking ACC 200 on the CDs. I feel that it provides practical information and has covered the necessary material that should be taught in a general accounting course. I learn better from seeing and hearing and I think that viewing the CDs provides a great way to see how accounting is actually done through it's graphics and examples. Norm has done a very professional job in making these CDs. I have also gained a greater knowledge about the application of accounting through the required classes that have been held. It is always nice to see how the principles we learn are actually used in the profession. In comparing this to other general classes here at BYU, it has been much more informative and worth my investment in taking the class. I really think that everyone should be required to take this course as it has practical information for any career. I would recommend this class to everyone." "The method used to teach Acc 200 is brilliant. The ability to listen to the lectures at my own rate, and as many times as I want, allows me to get a better grasp of the material. While class lecture centered classes are a proven method, it only allows the student one shot at getting the full dosage of the days material. Reviewing lecture notes is one thing, reviewing the lecture word-for-word is another. It is a valuable asset to the course. The CDs require the students to take more responsibility for learning the material. However, this is very appropriate as class is supposed to prepare us for the 'real world'. I have yet to have an internship or job (even P/T work) where I was spoon fed the way many lecture classes tend to do. Whether in a lecture setting or a CD class setting, the ultimate responsibility to learn the material resides with the students. The CDs make that responsibility more obvious. Since the material for the course is taught on CDs, this allows Professor Nemrow to take class time to teach about 'real world' applications of the course. It allows him the chance to teach, not just lecture. The point that I like most about the course is that it gives me a good amount of structured flexibility. I can learn at my own pace, but must plan my study time to meet with deadlines. The way this course is taught should not be changed at all. For me it is perfect." "I really like the way the class is structured. I like being able to view the cds at my own pace. I would much rather do that than sit through a class when I already understand the material. If I had to go to class, I do not think I would learn as much, because I would drift off while the teacher had to explain something I already understood. Then, I might miss something important. And, I also might not attend the class if the time was spent explaining to those who didn't understand. The cds work great. And, if I don't understand them, I know that there are many places I can go for help. I also think that the 8 required classes are beneficial. They allow for the application of the class to the real world. The required classes have been most beneficial in helping me know whether or not I want to major in accounting or business. I would not have known that by just going over the material. Overall, I think the structure of the class is great. I wish more of my classes were like it." "I have really enjoyed the CDs used for Acc 200. They get all of the material across in a manner similar to class lecture except they can be completed on a more flexible time schedule. I feel like I am learning as much information as I would if I were attending class and reading a textbook. The lectures are so well organized and detailed that additional textbook reading is not necessary. The option is available for those who do wish to use a textbook though. The required class days are beneficial as well, in obtaining a perspective of the business world. The lectures feature professionals in respective areas who are willing and able to answer any questions the students pose. This class has given me an excellent understanding of the fundamentals of the business language and I have enjoyed it immensely." "I think the Cds lesson, class presentations, and Acc 200 structured the way that it is, is perfect. I motivate myself to do the work, which I think is more appropriate for a college course than forceful participation. I enjoy the CD lessons because I listen, rewind, and learn at my own pace. I belief Professor Nemrow's style of teaching is adaptable to any student, thus beneficial to the entire educational system of Acc 200." "I like the style. With the notes and the CD's I am able to learn all I need to and on my schedule. As for the required classes, there is a reason that this is an introductory course. We are here to learn about accounting and decide whether or not we want to pursue a career in it. The classes are very informative and give us good direction." "Considering the nature of Accounting 200 (not a GE class) I am led to believe that its main purpose is obviously to give students usable and retainable knowledge on the subject of accounting. Norm's class set-up (CD lessons, quizzes, required classes, additional assignments, review sessions, and tests) accomplishes this goal better than any class I've ever taken. Norm has covered everything in such a way that anyone who desires to either learn or to get a good grade will unavoidably learn large amounts of practical knowledge that they will retain (due to repetition) and be able to use throughout their life. What more can you ask!? Many university level classes are geared towards developing thinking skills (this is often accomplished through minimal efforts by the teacher and high demands on the students, thus expanding their rational and analytical abilities) and in these cases it seems that the less a teacher does, the more the student is required to think. However, practical and retainable knowledge is almost always sacrificed in these courses. Norm, on the other hand, through his personal devotion, ingenuity, and efforts provides his students with unlimited learning resources and incredibly efficient learning strategies allowing us to gain much much more usable knowledge on the subject taught in the same, if not less, amount of time as the classes previously mentioned. True, our intellectual and analytical capabilities are not stretched through this program; instead we are allowed to use these previously gained abilities to effectively and efficiently learn the subject matter. I don't love accounting, but I enjoy this class and appreciate the knowledge I am gaining. If Norm were teaching a Freshman English or Philosophy class I might have qualms with his teaching style, but as far as Principles of Accounting goes, 'who could ask for anything more.' -Zach Aho" I have mixed feelings about the CDs. I think they cover the subject completely. I also think they are too long. The material cover in the CDs could never be done in class. I like the flexibility of listening to them on my own time. I just think the material should be cut down a little if that is possible. Overall I really enjoy the eight required classes too. "To be honest with you, they are exactly what I have needed in order to effectively learn accounting. To be able to listen, to read, and do it at my own pace, and when I am feeling most prepared to learn it has provide for me a learning experience that could not even be touched by the traditional textbook lecture approach. I feel that the traditional approach is a thing of the past. Also, the required classes have positively influenced my life from an educational and a spiritual aspect which I believe to be the true aim of BYU." "I really think that the CD's are very helpful to the learning. I'm international student and for me, it had been a wonderful experience to be able to go back every time I want and review the topics every time I feel like to. I feel that the lessons on the CD's are very easy to understand and the practice problems are very challenging and helpful. The classes have helped me to have a greater view of my career and specially understand the language of business. I like the course and I think that it does help a lot in my learning. I'm glad to pay for this course." "I greatly appreciate the accounting CD set-up and frankly can say that I learn much more from them than I would from reading out of a book. The CD's allow you to take your time, or review a lecture as many times as you need until you can understand it. As far as the class presentations, I feel they are valuable in that they apply the concepts we are learning to our lives. I feel that the class is wonderful as it is setup now." "I have had the opportunity to take some wonderful classes here at BYU with many talented teachers, but Accounting 200 has thus far been my favorite, and I believe it will prove to be the most useful for my future. The CDs are a wonderful and innovative idea because students can work at their own pace. If I need to hear a particular principle again, it is only a click away. If I understand the lesson fully, I can move through it more quickly. The in-class presentations have been helpful to say the very least. They teach students things about the real world of business, and even just life in general. I always leave the required classes knowing that I have learned something of use and importance for my life and future career. Brother Nemrow has done an excellent job teaching this class, and I see no reason to change it. It is sufficiently challenging, but definitely practical. I love it the way it is, and I will say again that it is the best class I have had the privilege to take here at Brigham Young University." "Learning through the CDs and few classes has been more helpful to me than learning through a lecture. In lectures I often miss something that was said, or may not understand the concept. There is no way I can have everything I don't understand explained again the same way it was presented. Sure, I can go to labs and have questions answered, but do I actually do that? Most of the time, I forget what my questions are, or don't understand enough to formulate a question for someone to answer. With the CDs, I'm able to immediately go back and hear again the part of the lecture I didn't understand and listen to it over and over until I do understand. I've done this numerous times, and it has been really helpful. The quizzes after the cd lectures are also helpful because they keep me motivated to do the lessons, for one thing, and help me study the material in such a way that I actually learn it right then and there. If professors had any realization of the benefits of lessons on cd, and implemented the use of the cds, I can assure you that students would be much more interested in what they're learning and much more capable of comprehending the material. In terms of actually learning something, this is the best class I've taken at BYU." "This course has given me good detailed accounting information I need to know. Instead of falling a sleep in class I can take a break and when i am ready view the CD's again. The eight presentations are real life subjects that we need to know to be able to function within the business world. I really enjoy this course and I know for sure that I learn by far more with CD'S than I would ever by going to class. It is so convenient to go back if I don't understand something or if I need to re learn the terms. In such a huge class personal attention is hard to get, but through those CD's I do get personal attention. It is a great class, and Prof. nemrow does a great job. " "I find the CDs very convenient in that I can view them whenever is best for me. Then it's nice to have the quizzes to keep me on schedule of viewing them. I like that I can speed them up, because I can still understand the material, but I don't have to spend as much time listening to lecture. I like the problems during the lessons that really help me solidify the information that I've learned in the lessons. It's nice to be able to 'rewind' and listen again when I miss something. I think that the required classes are interesting and informative when I go. However, not being very business oriented, I don't usually attend. In light of that admission, Norm is motivational in finding the importance and applicability of business and accounting in my life. I feel like I am learning a lot, and what I need to from the Accounting 200 course. I really like the CD approach and would like to see other courses carried out the same way." "Well whoever feels that this class is lacking something has obviously never taken the class. The class is amazing. I think it is one of the best-organized classes that I have ever had in my whole life. This class utilizes technology and makes a great way for students to learn. If help is needed there are plenty of places to go; office hours readily available, TA review sessions. Not to mention the 5-hour review session before our last test. This has been a great learning experience for me." I like the CDs very much because they give me the chance to view the lessons at my own pace and at times when I am fully awake and ready to listen. I think that the explanations are also very thorough and easy to understand. I also have the option to follow along in the printed notes in the more difficult sections. I also really enjoy the class presentations. This is honestly the first class that I have taken here at BYU where I leave class and share what I have learned with several of my friends and co-workers because I enjoy class so much and feel that it has such practical use in my life. These classes are better than I ever expected and they cover such a wide range of topics pertaining to business that I feel I can make a very well educated decision on what occupation I want to pursue in the future. I feel that in general this course is a wonderful introduction into the world of business and more specifically the world of accounting and that it does it with the proper amount of spirituality. I could not hope for anything better. I really like the CD's and I've learned a lot from the course so far. I knew nothing about the business world before this class and now I feel like I have a much better grasp on it. The classes are great because they bring in real life information instead of just textbook material. "The vast majority of stress and frustration, caused in schooling, is by the over abundance of reading in all of the classes that I must take. Not only do the CDs allow me an interactive lecture over and over again, for my viewing pleasure, but they also offer a much-needed break from staring at black words on a white page. God gave us technology for a reason, let us make use of it." "I wasn't sure at first if I would like the CDs, but I have found that I do like them. I appreciate being able to go as slow or as fast as I need on a lesson. I feel that I have learned a lot so far. I have really enjoyed the class presentations. They have been a great learning experience. I have really found that I enjoy accounting. The only problem I have and it is the same in all my classes, is that there is not enough time to really learn and enjoy the class. Life is too busy. The class has definitely taught me skills that I can use in my life." "I am writing in response to the CD's lessons used for accounting 200. I have enjoyed using these CD's to learn the basic principles of accounting. I have found them to be very beneficial toward my learning, and understand of accounting. It has been one of my favorite classes, and the CD's have helped me to not only learn the material, but also retain it. I also can watch them again for Further understand of concepts. The class is challenging, and yet fun at the same time. It requires me to take the initiative to learn the material, and has been very helpful. Every means is taken to help the students understand the course material. I highly recommend the use of the CD's, and feel that it is an appropriate 3 credit class." "The CD's that Professor Nemrow has created are an efficient and effective way of teaching the basic skills of accounting. I have enjoyed the balance of both having the CD lessons and online quizzes and the opportunity of going to classroom lectures where more applicable and pertinent lessons are taught. Overall, I would hope that more classes would begin to see the efficiency of these lessons. Now we can listen to his lectures, go back, slow it down or whatever at our own pace and really apply these principles into our lives and careers. Success of this mode of teaching is entirely dependent upon the student. However, this is true of all educational endeavors. I would give this manner and mode of teaching an A." "I think they are an innovative way to teach utilize all possible methods of learning. I think learning by cd's you get to hear, see and interact with the lessons. If by chance you don't catch something, you go back a few minutes. Very few classes offer such a learning environment. " "The CD's have been a dream come true for me. Not only am I learning at my own rate, but I'm keeping these CD's and making notes of lessons to review when I investigate companies to work for, how to chose which company is most profitable, or effective ways of saving money for retirement. I would enjoy seeing more classes taught this way. As to the required classes, the topics are very relevant to topics that need to be covered, and I am personally grateful that the classes bring the spirit, and are entertaining. Keep everyone awake. Please, don't change a thing." "Frankly, This has been the best class I have ever taken at BYU. Not only does it provide me more flexibility in when to actually take the lesson, but also I can also quickly review previously learned material without having to ask a professor to re-explain a concept he has already explained before. I don't have to strain at scrawl on a chalkboard or rush to take notes before they are erased. I can go at my pace and this really facilitates learning. This class is excellent. I'm a senior this year and have been disappointed at the poor quality of teaching at BYU in general. This class makes up for it in many ways. " "I love the CDs because if I don't understand something, or just space out for a second I can go back and listen to it again, and be able to understand it better. I also love it because I can go my own pace and do accounting when I have time during the day instead of a set time. I also really feel like the class presentations are good too. I learn a lot from each class and they aren't boring or annoying to go to. Each time I have gone I have learned so much! The class in general is great and I am learning a lot. " "I think that the Accounting 200 CDs, while not a traditional 'in-classroom' experience, are a valid and valuable way to teach accounting. With the class notes provided, listening to the CD's is the same as going to a lecture or having a textbook read to you out loud. I have enjoyed accounting this semester and I do not feel that a written textbook is a necessary component of a college course - I have learned just as much from the homework problems and course lectures on CD as I would have from a classroom approach. The TA sessions are helpful if I have direct questions arising from the CD lesson, and I feel that the tests have definitely been challenging enough and on a university level. If anything, this course is too difficult, not too easy. " "I feel that the CD lessons provide a method for a variety of learning to occur. All students do NOT learn in the same way. The CD's cater to the many different needs that students may have. I, personally, feel that I learn best by observation and imagery. The CD's provide a way for me to see what the teacher is trying to explain. The CD's have the visual dimensions that I can play over and over until I am able to capture the materials and understand them. The CD's have quality references and indexes that; I personally, think are extremely useful and efficient. With a click of a button I can look up a definition or search a topic of study. It is also so easy to go back to the CD's and review lessons or if my time doesn't permit me to watch the whole lesson, I can stop it and then return to where I left off very conveniently. I believe there is great potential in using CD lessons supported by clerical, required class periods. J. Ordyna" I feel I have learned more from them than I could from any teacher because I can get a repeat when I need to and go at my own pace as I learn. "Personally, I have enjoyed Norm Nemrow's approach to teaching Accounting 200. Somehow, through this interactive approach, I have been able to remember and apply a larger amount of information then I would have in any textbook. That may be because accounting builds on itself. Or, it may be that Norm recaps old material in all the lessons, which textbooks fail to do well. His classes are extrememly interesting and inspiring, especially today's required class, which was about material possessions and the gospel. I don't know if using CD's would work in every class. I do miss getting to know the teacher better, and having more in-class time. However somehow Norm still manages to bond with all of his students. With Norm and Accounting, I would say the system is effective and it works. I felt the class was challenging and worth my time. " "I think that the cds are awesome. They tell me just as much as a textbook would, but I understand the principles better. This class still requires a lot of time and effort, even without the textbook. The class presentations are good and help us to learn things important in our financial lives. I also think the course is great. I've been learning a lot. It is the only class that I actually like spending time for." "If we we're simply given the CD's and told to 'have at it,' then I'd would not like this approach. But because Mr. Nemrow has also made available a T.A. system that seems to run 24 hours a day, and has also conducted plenty of review and help sessions, I think the CD's are a GREAT teaching tool. The course is set up very well. " "I really enjoy the use of the interactive CD lessons. Not only are the CD's informative and easy to understand, but I am also able to pace myself throughout the semester. Although this may not be a 'typical' teaching style it is more effective in many aspects. First, if I don't completely understand a concept it is easily reviewed. Second, the information is not only easy to understand, but the examples are phenomenal. Getting rid of the interactive CD lessons would be a huge mistake! Let's face it; this type of learning style may not be 'traditional' but it is the wave of the future. Regards, Acc 200 Student" "I didn't like the cds at first because I'm so programmed to the traditional method, but as time went by and I got used to the format I love it! I am able to listen to the lessons when it's convenient for me, and even better I can speed it up to help me focus better. I fully support the CDs. They are great. The BEST part is that next to the clip of Norm talking is a visual outline of what he's saying. The two together really reinforce what I'm learning and I find that I grasp the concepts best this way. The class presentations are great because they are real world applications of accounting. I wish everything I learned I was able to connect to the real world in the same way. The concepts taught are reinforced in my mind this way. This course is REALLY demanding considering I'm a business minor. I don't think it's fair to have the minors take the major's 'weeding' class. I think if anyone but Norm taught this class I wouldn't like it at all, but he helps make it tolerable.” This is one of the first class's that I am actually excited to go to class too. I look forward to Norm's lectures. The CD lessons give a good foundation of accounting then with the class lectures it gives a great real life backing of our lessons "At first I didn't think that I was going to like using the CD lessons but now that I have gotten into the groove I really do think it is an excellent way to teach accounting. There are so many resources available just on the CDs themselves. It takes just as much work to sit and listen to the CDs and prepare for the quizzes as any other college course I have taken. Since Acc200 is a prerequisite for many different courses in many different majors I think that the way this course is set up really caters to those who are going to be in a business major, accounting major, and any other major such as my major, MFHD. The class presentations are helpful in supplementing some of the topics that may be of more practical importance to a business owner. I enjoy this non-traditional way of teaching." "The CDs are a wonderful approach to accounting. They are thorough and in depth. I had a textbook accounting class in high school, and the CDs are a much better teaching method. If something is missed in the lecture, all one must do is hit the rewind button and listen to the section again. If one misses something in a lecture with a boring professor, the individual is out of luck. Plus, there are five point quizzes at the end of each CD lecture to make sure that the concepts are mastered. If an individual does poorly on a quiz, all he must do is go back and listen to the lesson again to better understand the material. With only eight required classes, students can look forward to coming to live lectures, especially with interesting speakers who are experts in their respective fields. The monotony of going to class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is pushed aside. I give the CDs in Accounting 200 my highest approval as well as the eight required classes themselves, and I hope that their use may increase to other sectors of teaching” "Professor Nemrow's CD's are a great learning tool. They provide the same information that would be given in lectures, but they can be repeated until the student fully understands. And in the case that there are unanswered questions, Professor Nemrow is very willing to discuss them personally. The lectures that are given are relevant and well presented. I have decided through the material that I personally am not interested in accounting in general, but Professor Nemrow has still made this as pleasant a learning experience as possible. He is a very gifted teacher and I would recommend that he continue teaching in this effective manner. " "Why do you think that the Accounting Program is ranked 6th in the nation? I went to my buddy's Accounting class at San Diego St. and it was textbook, boring, and the kids hated it. I love this class and I have not only learned about bean counting, but the language of business, which gives me a good foundation to understand the basics of the business world. This is an awesome class, and it is not a cakewalk either. The exams and quizzes are challenging, and truly test what I have been learning. " " I just wanted to say that the way that Accounting 200 is structured and administered is awesome. The CDs allow students some flexibility. In addition, there is increased responsibility for self-motivation. They are an extremely effective teaching tool, and definitely efficient. I would rather use the CDs than read a textbook any day. They contain challenging material, and I have learned a lot from them. The required classes are great because they make it possible for the class to meet together, and discuss relevant topics. We do not meet together too much, or too rarely. The schedule is just right. I think that the future of education is in utilizing the technological tools that are available to us, and that more people should take a closer look at the benefits that come from courses like these. " "I would like to say that this class, even though very hard and time consuming, has been one of my favorite. You always here people complaining that school is all books and no practicality. When am I going to learn something that applies to the real world? This is one of the only classes I have taken that has given me real life information as it is applicable to me right now. Through our class presentation I have become informed about ways to invest and prepare for my future in a real sense. Sure, the CD's take a little getting use to but it is nice to be able to do them at my pace and when I have time. I give class the format a rating of better and more real then 95% of BYU undergrad classes. " I have really enjoyed this class. It has been very convenient for me because I have been able to work it in around my schedule. It takes up as much of my time as other 3 credit hour classes but I can do it on my own time and at my own rate. Each student is very different and I think this class does well to accommodate many students. I have really enjoyed the required classes so far and I look forward to learning in them. "I think it is the best class I have ever had. Because of the CDs you are able to get a lot more information then you could in a regular class time. Also, if you have any questions or can't remember something you can go back and watch it again. You can't push rewind on a real live teacher now can you? We get more then enough information from the CDs but on top of that we also have eight required classes that are purely extra and all for our benefit.” "I believe the CDs are definitely a good way of learning. When I don't understand a concept, I am able to view it multiple times, at any speed I want (with the Enounce software). This allows everyone to learn at his or her own pace. If we were in a classroom setting, there would be many people asking many questions, which would detract from the lesson and waste valuable time. The CDs are also very in depth in my opinion, and Norm gives detailed examples that he might not otherwise be able to give in a traditional lecture, and he makes it easier to understand the concepts than a textbook does. The CDs also allow everyone to participate in every lecture. If the lectures were held in traditional style, with everyone cramped into the JSB, there are bound to be people who miss the class due to outside circumstances. With the CDs, they are able to watch the lecture at any time of day, whenever is most convenient to them. Also, the eight required classes are very beneficial to me. With viewing the CDs and learning all of this information, I sometimes get overwhelmed with facts. To simply hear an explanation of real life examples where the material is applied, and see it actually working, helps me understand the material much better. You need real-life examples to relate the information to, and Norm would not be able to accurately portray or go in depth with the examples in a traditional lecture setting. I don't think students should have their face hovering over a book for their entire college career, and I am a supporter of alternative learning techniques. There are many ways of learning, and I personally learn much better with the CDs. However, for those who do learn best via textbook, the book is available and Norm has taken care to math the book chapters with the CD lessons so that students may learn that way, if they choose. " This is very effective! I could pace myself and it's just like having Norm in the same room! He explains it thoroughly and he's always available for help at his office hours. The only negative thing about this course is the Reading assignment; it is too lengthy!!! Give us a break Norm! "The CD Accounting lessons have actually been very beneficial to me. I was able to view them at home where I'm much more comfortable which makes learning easier where I can go over any part of the lesson that I don't understand. The 8 required classes are also good because it gives me a chance to learn some practical application from the lecturers. It's so nice to have a change like this with no text book reading but learning just as much!!!" "I think the CDs are great. I'm able to learn a lot more in a lot briefer amount of time. I'm not a big accounting fan and don't know why I'm even taking this class because I'm not interested in business, but I've learned a lot and prefer the CDs over a textbook any day. Norm did a good job of making the subject matter bearable. The class presentations are great and it's nice to learn applicable stuff for our lives and careers." "I was just telling my wife the other day how I couldn't imagine learning as much as I am learning through lecturing. The ability to go at your own pace and repeat things if you want are great learning tools. I am not an accounting major, I am not even a business major, but this is my favorite class I have had at BYU. It isn't my favorite because it is easy, because it isn't. It is my favorite because I feel like I am learning applicable information is a very efficient way. I remember the lessons and I am able to apply them with my job. The CD lessons are the best learning tool that I have had here at BYU" "I enjoy the CDs, class presentations, and the course in general. I think it is a great way to learn the basics of accounting. For one thing, the CDs allow me to review some topics over and over if I need to if they are unclear to me the first couple of times. Then we still meet every once in awhile and I am able to talk to the professor if I still have some questions. I wanted to take a basic accounting class to see if I liked it, but didn't want to go to a class every day in case I didn't like it. I decided to take this class because it is online, and I am able to do it at my own pace. I find this class very enjoyable." "Before I took Acc 200, accounting would probably have been my last pick for a major, but now I'm not so sure. This class has really given my insight into the world of business. Even if I were to go no further in the business department I would consider my time very well spent. I have probably learned more 'applicable' things in this class than any other class I have taken at this university. The CD's are wonderful. They make learning enjoyable. I think maybe change scares some people. They say that we've been doing this for years and it's worked great so why should we change it. I once had a professor here at BYU who compared those people to the older generation of people that Moses was leading into the Promised Land. God had to wait for them to die off before He could lead his people to the land of promise. Do we have to wait for some of the faculty at BYU to die off before we enter the promise land?" "Because I have 18.5 credits this semester, it has been very helpful if not necessary that I use the CD's to learn the material and attend the 8 required classes only. The CD's explain the material very well and we can go at our own pace. I wish a lot of my classes were set up in this fashion because I feel I don't get much out of a class when the teacher is not prepared or if I'm not in the mood to learn. The CD lessons give me the freedom to learn when I feel ready and I have some time to do so. Having quizzes right after assignments is also a good way of making sure that the students actually listen to the CD's." "I love my Accounting class. It is so insightful into the world of business. I've always wanted to know about business and how it relates to the economy and the public. Norm makes accounting so interesting and the CD's give me the flexibility to learn when my schedule permits. I feel in control of my education and my destiny, as opposed to being locked down to a rigid schedule. Debits and Credits have become two of my closest friends...thanks Norm!!!" "I do not really think the accounting class has the best format. I do however feel that the CD format is exponentially better than the Textbook way, which most students don't get anything out of except for a large an $80 fee for the textbook. I wish there were more classes and more of the testing was done on the material presented. Presently most of the test is question the material presented, but usually 10% of the test is asking us to inference things from the material presented. Often when studying a man made subject like accounting, basic logic and reasoning skills could provide more than one suitable answer. Of course there can only be one right answer, and this becomes frustrating. If used properly the CD's can be a much greater asset than reading a textbook. It is not as easy to review them in my opinion but there are textbooks available in the lab that I can use anytime I like. Over all I think that the CD's are great and will eventually replace a lot of classroom teaching. I have enjoyed the CD presentation of accounting. I feel that education is now at my pace and I can get what I want out of the course. Class presentations have focused on aspects of our current study area. The course seems to flow well. I will admit that it is frustrating to review tests and see that I have made silly errors but that is more my problem than the course. Reading is important in a course but in general the classes that I am taking now are no more reading intense as Acc 200. We have reading assignments before class which are much more pertinent that supplementary reading. "I prefer in class lectures to impersonal CD lessons. " "I really like the CD lectures. I like them for several reasons: First, I like them because I am able to listen to them at my convenience. If I don't understand a principle I can actually go back to the lecture and hear it over and over. I feel that this is one of my more demanding classes because I have to spend a lot of time in front of a computer listening to hours of lecture." "I have enjoyed learning from the CD's. It has allowed me to give my accounting studies more valuable time because, I have the option when to learn. It has been a good learning experience for me." "I think that the way Acc 200 is set up is fabulous. If at first the material isn't clear, I can always go back and review the cd's again, whereas in a large lecture class, it is difficult to review things and solidify the material. Also, the class forces me to be on top of things with the quiz deadlines due so frequently. I know that in my other classes where there aren't quizzes every week, I fall behind, but this forces me to top on top of my studies. " "The non-traditional style of Norm's Acc 200 class has helped me to better learn the information because I learn at my own pace and can go back to re-learn a lecture I did not understand. I cd's have detailed information with real life examples, not just abstract concepts, so I can relate them to my life. On several occasions, I have used the real concepts learned in this class in my normal routine. I wish more classes were like this; I'm sick of listening to professor's tirades about unrelated subjects. The Acc 200 cd's contributed to making Norm's class one of my favorites!" "I have learned just as much if not more from the class on CD's as I do from a traditional 'textbook' class. If fact the other day I met with a financial planer and he was shock about just how much I understood how things work. Being able to view the CD's when I want and the optional review sessions offer more than enough opportunities to learn. This is the future of school." "At first I was hesitant about the CDs. I was annoyed thinking, how would I ever learn from a CD where I could not ask questions. They told us about calling the Accounting Lab, but that seems intimidating and even when I have it hasn't been that helpful. However, now I really enjoy the CDs. They allow me to review subjects that I don't understand and insure that everyone in the class gets the same information. The cds have been a great tool for my success in this course. However, they are not without their flaws. I think the CDs could be more articulate. Instead of having to watch at super speed, I think they could be more direct. However, on particular subjects that I need further clarification on or more examples, the CDs serve this purpose well. I guess it is kind of predicament. Class presentations are excellent. They are hands down the best, most interesting lectures I have attended since starting BYU. I learn a great deal of practical knowledge about the business world and look forward to them. The lectures relate what we are learning in the class to the real world. This is something other entry-level courses could improve upon. The professor is excited about the subject. He loves what he is teaching and that enthusiasm is taken into his class. My only complaint with the class presentations is that they do not end on time. I have a class directly afterwards in the Law Library which is the furthest building from the JSB. I can't leave the lectures early because the last quiz question or important instructions are given in that last five minutes of class and the first five minutes after class. I really enjoy them, but they need to end on time. Overall, I think the course is well organized and even though at times very demanding with three lesson quizzes and a pre and post class quiz in one week, I think I have learned a lot that will benefit me not only in the further study of business, but in life in general. One thing I would like to see change in the future would be the review sessions not being on a weeknight. I appreciate the time that the professor takes out of his week to help us be successful on the test, but it conflicted with my night class thus causing me to miss the night class to go the review. I think the course could be improved upon, but overall I am satisfied with the way the class is run now. "I have really enjoyed this class and feel that the cd lessons are great because they allow us each to move at our own pace. I have learned a lot and the cds seem to work because I do well on the tests. This class has convinced me to major in accounting. " Learning via the CDs has been absolutely wonderful. It allows each of us to work at his or her own pace. It is as if we are one on one with the professor, though we don't get to ask questions. However, I have found this Accounting course to be most enjoyable. I love doing my Accounting lessons, for they are a fun way to learn. As for the class presentations, they too are most enjoyable. I feel as if I attend them because I want to learn more, not because I am required to attend. I love Accounting, which is probably good since I desire to major in Accounting. :)" "In my opinion, Acc 200 is an excellent class and is very challenging. I have taken other accounting classes in another college which have covered half of the material. As far as the CD's, I don't prefer them but they do teach well. The reason I don't prefer them is that as soon as I put them in and sit down to watch them, I fall asleep. I have tried everything, but I still sleep. I think this is a problem mostly on my part due to a sleeping disorder, but that is just something I have to deal with. I love the classes; they provide practical application to the material we are learning in the CD's. Thanks." "I think it is a great idea to have at least one class like this. It makes it so much more convenient for the student because they can study on their own time and the cost is so much less. I feel it is a better learning experience because I can watch the CD's continually over again to see if I missed anything. You can't do that as easily with your notes because you usually miss some important information in the lectures.” "The accounting course taught using the CD's is one of the best college experiences I have ever had. The CD's allow me to learn the information at my own speed, go over lecture material which I have difficulties understanding several times, as needed. The required classes are always interesting and have helped me decide to be an accounting major by not only exposing me to more areas of accounting, but more importantly by exposing me to more areas of business as a whole. Teaching this course any other way would be a mistake, and would disadvantage students who take this course in the future." "It's a nice 'change' from the boring, repetitious 'format' of college class of reading. The cds give a chance to be able to repeat anything of any lesson at any time if it is not understood... and with explanations. The lectures give us the chance to get a feeling of what it is really like in the real business world and not just be cooked up in class room everyday just trying to get a feeling of what that really is by what just the teacher has to say. This different is a definite keeper!" "Personally, I think the cd experience has been a good one. It makes everything more conducive to learning. Sitting in a lecture, if you miss something, you can't rewind the professor (or master) to hear what you missed. Because we have access to the enounce software we are able to learn at a faster and much more efficient rate. It has been such a blessing for me. These, however, are not the only benefits. I am taking Acc 200 as a freshman. Although I have always been a responsible student, I find that I have to take the initiative and make time myself to view the cd lessons, I have learned more responsibility. It's very easy to attend class sessions when you're enrolled in them. You schedule that time yourself. But when you have to a certain date to watch a certain lesson, it's harder to take that time out of your day. In my opinion, the cd lessons for Acc 200 are very beneficial in many more ways than one." "I love the cds. I can go at my own pace and I can watch them from the comfort of my apartment. Most of the class presentations I find very informative and applicable to my life outside of class. One of them was very boring but the rest were great, especially the class on fraud and the class about stocks and bonds. I have had an enjoyable experience in Accounting 200. Norm is one of the best teachers I've had yet here at BYU." I have found that the CD's are a good way in which to present the accounting material. It's harder to 'zone out' while watching the CD's than it is when reading a textbook. I love the CD's and the Introduction to Accounting. I find it to be one of the best classes that I have been able to take here at B.Y.U. I love being able to study the C.D.'s at my own time and how many time's I need to. The Quiz's keep me on top of things and I find the courses to be very challenging and demanding. Nic Evans "I personally enjoy the CD's and the course accounting 200 as Norm presents it. I feel as though I have learned a great deal, and see no reason why his current teaching method should be questioned. It has been one of my favorite and one of the most useful classes I have taken at BYU." "I feel that throughout the Accounting 200 course, using the CDs as the main learning tool, I have received a substantial education. The class format enables students to learn the material well while taking advantage of the power of technology. I think that teachers who don't use technology to their benefit are hindering their performance and the expansion of their class's potential. The CD lessons are just like lectures but can be viewed at enhanced speed, which assists in my comprehension. I enjoy going to the 8 required classes because I know that I will see presentations on how I can apply what I have been learning to my life. Overall, I rate this introductory accounting course very highly. I have enjoyed a subject I was not enthusiastic about taking. " I believe that the CD lessons are an excellent way to learn. I find I learn much more than in other classes and I wish that more general education courses would take this approach. You can learn much better and faster the same material that would take much more time to learn. I would suggest however that the CD's be updated and revised on a fairly regular basis. I believe that the CDs are better than any textbook. With the CDs you're not just reading a book; you're listening and watching at the same time. It's easier to stay awake and focused with the CDs than with a textbook. I myself have learned more in this Acc 200 class than in any other class I've had. I think that Norm Nemrow has done an excellent job in teaching this course. The CDs are great and the class lectures are also. I can't think of a better way to teach a class. "Accounting 200 has been one of my favorite classes ever. I enjoy doing the lessons on CD because it allows me to hear what he is saying and, at the same time, have some kind of visual showing what he is talking about. These two combined help me to better understand the information being given. The CDs also allow me to watch them when it fits my own schedule. As for the required classes, I think they have been the most enjoyable of anything in the class. I find it very interesting because Bro. Nemrow takes what we've been learning on the CD lessons and applies it to what is happening in the business world at the time. This has allowed me to gain a better understanding of how today's businesses run and how accounting can be useful to me." "The CD's are great! I learn a lot more from the CD's than from reading a textbook. Maybe that's just the type of learner I am, though." I think that I have gotten more out of Norm's CD's then ANY traditional class in my two years at BYU!!! If I don't understand something I can keep repeating it and if I understand it well I can just breeze through it. Yes it does require more commitment on the part of the student because it is on their time to get things done!!! But we are quizzed over required class and lesson to make sure we understood the main parts. I have never had a professor as into what he is teachings as Prof. Nimrow. Not just about accounting either but about integrity!!!!! I think that more classes should be run this way....it is more efficient!!!! "I enjoy the CD approach to teaching accounting. It is like I am in class, but I can do it whenever I want. The only problem I have with it is I can't ask questions if I'm confused." "I have learned a lot from using the cd's, and I feel it is an honor to have a person who is such a great instructor teaching this subject." The non-traditional way of teaching through cd's is one of the best ways that I have ever learned in a class. Textbook reading is often times difficult to understand. Seeing and learning together with the teacher anytime that I want him is so appreciated. All classes should have some form of cd's to learn from. It is the way of the future. "I was hesitant at first when I learned how Accounting 200 was to be taught, because it is in an untraditional way. I am extremely impressed, however, with the organization and effectiveness of having a class taught in this manner. Brother Nemrow has been able to cover more than sufficiently all of the aspects of this class, even more so than a textbook ever could. His explanations and examples on the CD's have been more helpful than any textbook. Coming from a student, believe me, that we appreciate that there are faculty members out there who try to find alternative ways to make classes more interesting, and enhance our learning. The classes are great as well, and further enhance our learning of the subject, but the CD's cover every detail, and explain the subject matter so well. I have honestly learned more in this class, and felt valued more by the professor than I have in so many of my small, daily classes. I fully support his method of teaching!" “I find the CDs very educational and very helpful in preparing me for the exams and quizzes. It makes learning more enjoyable and more student-friendly in that I can view the CDs anytime...” "At first I was unsure about having CD's as my teacher and homework/text; however, now that I have been through a majority of the class, I like them better than actually being in class. The reasons are two fold, one I can work at my own pace, I get to go as quickly as I like (the enounce software is a heaven send) and two, if I have any questions or I didn’t understand something, I have the option to listen to it as many times as I like and if I still don't understand it there are many avenues to pursue, ie TA's, Prof. Nemrow etc. Thanks." "I have been very pleased with the format of this class. Being able to re-watch/listen to the sections of CD lectures that I don't understand is something I have always wished I could do with courses. To pass the class, you need to work hard and keep up." "I think that this is a wonderful learning experience. I have enjoyed it greatly and actually learned a lot from the CD's. Honestly I would have to say that it is my favorite class and a great deal of that has to do with the professor’s approach to teaching accounting. It has been a positive, learning experience that I hope will continue and reach into other subjects here on campus. " The CDs are great. Class presentations are very rewarding because they apply real world principles to what we learn. The course in general is productive and very useful. "I think the CD's allow us, the students, to review the key information at our own pace with the help of the visuals as many times as we need. The content is challenging, the lessons require A LOT of time, almost too much. The required lectures are usually very interesting and are real world examples of how we can apply the information we are learning in the real world. " "I honestly feel that the Accounting CD's are great, and give me the chance to work on my own. If I need to review something I have the information at the touch of a computer. I feel that more is covered in the CD's then can be covered in class for one hour. Textbook reading is not me, and I don't think that I would even do it if I had to. Listening to norm and his great examples really gets me involved and I really seem to catch on with his examples also. I feel that it is a great way of learning. I like the class a lot." "I feel that I am really learning this stuff. It takes more time usually than my other classes do, but I feel that I understand the material better than I do for any other class I have taken, and I think that in large part that is because of the way the class is presented. I have the chance to hear what he is saying as many times as I need to in order to understand it." "Before I started this class, I knew nothing of Accounting. My dad is an accountant for the SEC, and I had no idea what he did. In this class I have learned more material than any other class I have taken at BYU. The required lectures help us to understand what is going on out in the world, what is actually happening to our money. I think this course is amazing. Truthfully, sitting and listening to teachers, and reading from the textbook doesn't work for me personally. With the CDs, if I miss a point, I can listen to it again and again. But in class, the teacher would probably not like it if I asked his the same question five times in the same period. I hope this class stays the way it is so my brother will be able to experience it after his mission." Accounting 200 has been my most demanding, most difficult course taken here at BYU. But I am learning a lot of discipline. I am also learning the material, and think Norm has done a fabulous job at organizing the course. " "The CD approach to learning has been my most valuable learning experience thus far at BYU. What is especially nice is the ability to decide when I'm ready to learn and the ability to go at my own pace. Also, Norm is always available for personal questions. No method has enabled me to learn as much as the CD's have. Norm, you're a genius, thanks for the help" I am a student that has had no prior accounting experience and has learned a great deal. I am able to listen to news reports and understand what is being said. This class is very challenging because of the material and of the time. The required classes are one of the best parts of the class. I am able to see what I am learning has real applications. I love it. The Acc. 200 CD lessons have given me the chance to see the lectures multiple times! "This is one of the best, most educational courses I have ever taken. I have learned to understand the basics of accounting, and I have learned how to truly apply them in my life." "I feel like I have learned a lot from the CD's. Admittedly, they are too long and Norm is quite long-winded, but the actual material learned is well presented. I think the online quizzes are the only way to go. When the quiz isn't required, I fall behind and don't listen to the lecture. The fact that you don't have to go to class too often has been really nice though. It does seem that the required classes and the CD's have little in common and do not relate much, but I feel that the things I've learned from the classes have been beneficial and worth my time. It has been an overall good experience." "I really enjoy the Accounting 200 class. I have found that this is a subject that really interests me. I like the CD's because they explain everything very well, and if I don't understand right away I can just back-up a little and hear it again. I also like that I can do it at my own speed. The quizzes are good to check how well I understood the lesson and to keep me moving toward the end. The exams are great. I feel that they are very difficult and really test my knowledge. I have spent many hours studying and preparing for both of the first two exams and feel the exams were fair, but very challenging. I like the required classes because they help show why all of the things we are studying are important and how they apply. This has been one of my favorite and most rewarding classes here at BYU." "I really think this class with CD lessons and 8 required classes promote students to have both academic understanding of basic accounting and encounter with real world experiences. Sometimes students lose their interests for the class in the middle of the course because of the work amount and unfamiliarity of materials. However, 8 required classes spread over the course schedule help student to recapture the interest and energy to pursue the study. Also these class sections provide students with broader perspective of business field and it helps student decide what specific field of business they want to pursue their studies." "I believe that the way the class is run is very instructive. I like the CD approach because it allows me ample opportunities to understand the material presented. And if I for some reason can't understand the material after a little hard work, I know that Norm would be more than happy to help me in his office. The required classes are also a very valuable learning experience. They help to reinforce the knowledge learned in the CD's and also to provide us students with real life scenarios. I am a freshman and believe I have learned the most in this class than any other this year. Some down falls of the CD's would be the fact that you must have a computer to use them. So if you needed to leave Provo for something and you can't find a computer you are toast. Although, I have done quite well in this class I prefer to learn this in the hands on approach. So I think that if the CD's were integrated with a book some how it would be the most effective way to teach. For both visual and hands on learners could both enjoy the class and do well in it." "I have really enjoyed the opportunity to use these CDs. I feel just like I'm in class but I'm able to go at my own pace. The quizzes that we have keep me in check and help me to remember everything that I'm taught on the CDs. I feel like I've learned more with the CDs than if I was using a textbook. It's the same material, and if we want to use a textbook they are available. The class presentations have been enjoyable and informative. I've like the class presentations so much that I probably wouldn't mind having more than 8 required classes. I've enjoyed this class and the way that it is set up. I learned more and paid more attention than I think I would have if all the course learning came from regular classes and a textbook." It is very frustrating to me in taking every single quiz for every lesson of the course. "I love the setup Professor Nemrow has created. I honestly never thought accounting would be an interesting subject to me, but Norm has honestly made it enjoyable. I think that the most important part of the current structure of the class is that it allows you to work at your own pace which has been a great asset to me. I honestly believe that I have learned more through Professor Nemrow's setup than I could through any textbook based class." I have found that the CDs are many times more effective for learning the material than any textbook. The CDs cover the same material that would otherwise be taught and cater to everyone's learning style. I think Norm does an incredible job in all the lectures and I wish all my classes could be as entertaining as his or just half as productive. Although there is something to be said for how the exams are worded. I don't think they are always as clear as they should be. "Professor Nemrow's Accounting 200 approach to presenting the material via CD lecture has its positives and negatives. On the negative side, some students have to do everything homework-related for the course in a computer lab on campus because they don't have a computer of their own to use. Some students more than likely fall behind the outlined schedule due to not having a class to attend every other day to remind them of the work that is due. At times, the CDs are problematic because of a few errors in the code (I'm a coder... I know), and the occasional misspelled word. Also, with the CD lectures it is more difficult to ask Professor Nemrow relevant questions at the time the question arises. On the positive side, the way the course is designed; it is difficult to fall behind because there is an online quiz due after completing nearly every CD lesson. The quiz is only available for a specific duration, and so you have to at least keep up with the prescribed course timeline to have the quizzes available to you. You can take the course at your own speed as long as you at least keep up with the course outline. If a student is a faster learner, or just wants to get through it and have it out of the way, that student can go as fast as they wish through the CD lessons, quizzes and exams. The CD lessons allow you to repeat a lecture or segment as many times as is needed to grasp the concepts, review for tests, or as Friday night entertainment. The companion materials (syllabus, schedule, slide printouts, Financial Practice Set, additional problems, etc.) complement the CDs really well and let the student take notes as the CD lecture is playing, and let those that learn best through reading learn that way as Professor. Nemrow explains concepts along the way. In the required classes, Professor Nemrow answers questions that may have come up, but the great thing is that we get to hear about REAL, LIVE experiences that Norm or a guest presenter has had that relate to what the course materials are going over at about that time. I like that. Yes, you need to know the theories that form a foundation to work from, but I am MUCH more interested in the application of the knowledge and what it's going to do for ME. The required class lectures provide those insights into the application of what I'm learning. In addition to the items I've mentioned, Professor Nemrow has made himself available during his office hours (and then some) to help students, there are TAs and tutors that are available, and there are computers all over campus that students can use to get the work done "I think that the CD approach to the Accounting curriculum is both innovative and beneficial. It has allowed me to save a lot of time, by allowing me to view the CDs at the time that I desire. Additionally, the combination of excellent visual/audio/diagrams makes the learning experience invaluable. The difference I can see in my Accounting knowledge between when I watch the videos and when I don't is astounding. Everything seems to stick with me when I watch the video CDs. I enjoy the approach." "Before even considering this evaluation, I have mentioned to my friends and family how much I have learned from this course. Although there is less class time in this course, I feel like I have had a more interactive, hands on, personalized experienced than in any other class, especially in the business department. The labs provide human interaction, but they are rarely needed because the CD's provide the information in a manner that makes the material easy to understand. I wish more classes had the technology that Acc 200 has. Only having the certain amount of required classes has enabled me to work at my own pace, but the quizzes have kept me on track. Honestly speaking, I have learned more from Acc 200 than I have from any other class in my four years at BYU. " "I personally really enjoy the way Accounting 200 is taught. The CD's allow you to go at your own pace so if you don't understand something you can go back and relearn it from the instructor’s mouth. In a traditional class if you miss something or need help understanding a concept you are left on your own to figure it out. The Accounting 200 course is probably the course I have learned the most from thus far in my college career. I really enjoy the CD's, and I feel the lesson quizzes require you to learn the material. The 8 class periods also give us access to other aspects of business which allow us to see a much broader spectrum. In general I feel this class is of great value and I hope more classes go the way of CD's and use the multimedia equipment and the technology we have today." "I find the CD's that we use in ACC 200 much more helpful and appropriate than a typical classroom lecture with reading from a book for a number of reasons, allow me to explain: 1) They enable a student to listen to them when it is convenient for them, we're in college and promote things like that. 2) They allow students to learn at their own pace. Thus allowing them to replay the lecture if needed or go to a specific section that needs additional explaining. 3) The 8 lectures that we have during the semester are concise and to the point rarely being side-tracked by meaningless info that many other classes fall victim to. In short I feel that the CD's allow for a much more appropriate learning atmosphere and that by forcing a book and classroom setting will not be fitting, but more like a high school classroom." "CD's are great, but for me they lack the written transcript of Prof. Nemrow's lecture. I may be able read faster than he can talk but more importantly my vision memory is better than my hearing memory. Thus the slides from the lectures have been more helpful. Class presentations are very good. I remember the eight lectures more from this class than the whole semester of sitting in to some other class simply because there are less lectures in ACC 200. The more lectures a class has the more monotone they become and the less I remember them. Class time is for me to hear interesting (and sometimes funny) insights not repetition of the book (and accounting is NOT my favorite subject). I think people are different and their ways of learning are different. I would rather not go to class and read the text (or transcript of the lecture) at home PROVIDED the text (or transcript) is easy to understand (unfortunately 60-70% of times not true). But some other people have different ways of learning and they should be granted that opportunity. In this class the eight lectures are actually providing helpful insight for life beyond college even if you are not in that major [and I am not] (not many other courses can claim that unless you major in the subject). One thing that I would disagree in course setup is the deadlines for the quizzes. If there is no need for TA to grade every one of them (computer does that) then I don't see any reason why a student should be said when to study by deadlines. I think it is ineffective because the studying done to beat the deadline is only skin-deep - enough to get by. The actual studying (where understanding is involved) is done before the test. And who is going to remember the material anyway when they've read 100's of pages of text in other subjects in between? Might as well do it before the test so the memory is fresh. Overall I like the course because I don't have to buy an expensive textbook. CD-s are inexpensive and everything I need is on them. I believe that the eight lectures are more than enough for class time but the subject can be made easier to conquer by providing a transcript of cd-lectures (just out of consideration for the students whose first language is not English). There are helpful exam reviews and help sessions where people can go who have trouble understanding from the CD's." "I have liked using the CDs. I can go at my own pace, listen several times if necessary, and then if that isn't enough, there are the TA labs and even Prof. Nemrow available to help. The course has been more than rigorous in terms of time and material. I spend a significant amount of time listening to CDs--way more time than I spend working in/for other classes. The CDs are more than the lessons. They also contain the homework assignments. And since we have regularly scheduled quizzes on each one, I am forced to stay up with the lessons. This one is a keeper. I have never worked harder for a class in my 3 years here at BYU." "I have loved the CDs and class presentations for Acc 200. It gives me the option of stopping, reviewing lectures at any time, and really making sure that I understand the material. The additional 8 classes have helped to piece together what I am learning and have helped apply it to the real world and things that I am interested in studying more. It has been a great learning experience over all, and compared to other class lectures has been my favorite. I have learned more and appreciate the multiple teaching methods it has offered me. The CDs and lectures are interesting and helpful. I would not have UNDERSTOOD THE MATERIAL, OR ENJOYED THIS CLASS any other way. " The CD lessons really provide a thorough coverage of the material. The course expectations seem to be demanding and realistic. The quiz deadlines really help keep you on schedule. Attending the class presentations has also helped me apply some of the principles introduced in the CD lessons. At first I didn't like the cd's. That was because I didn't have the internet. This caused the software not to work right. Then I got my act together and gained access to the internet and it became much more bearable. I also didn't take notes at first and that made it even worse because the info wouldn't stay. So I changed that as well. I think that there was almost too much information covered. I honestly believe that this class will benefit all students throughout their lives and making it a required class would be a great advantage for all students. I particularly like the 8 required classes. In them we cover things that are going on in the real world. Things that are important to our future. This class is far from easy but so beneficial. "I really enjoy the accounting lessons on CD. They allow me to take the lecture at my own pace, and review when necessary. I feel that this approach is much better than attending class twice a week. With the 8 required classes, we still get to touch base with our professor and gain that classroom atmosphere vital to college life. I do feel, however, that it is rather hard to study for exams. I would like to have a book accompany the CD's, so that I can study with. But I think that at this point in time, the CD's are more than adequate, and I love them. It is possible to study and to comprehend what the course is trying to teach. Go Norm!" "This class basically features a 'talking textbook'. It's easier to stay focused and interested in the lessons because the professor talks me through them while the text appears on the screen. It's also easier to pace myself through the lesson because I know how much time is necessary. I frequently will rewind a minute or two if I missed a point, or click pause to memorize a given list. " "I really feel the CDs used for Acc 200 in Norm Nemrow's class is the perfect way to go for this class. First off, it is just like a textbook in that you get all the information about the course but you also get to learn about it with a little personality. Now, it is rough enough reading big textbooks for all of our other classes. I'm not saying textbooks are horrible to read, but they are supposed to help us learn the subject that we are studying about, right?? The goal here is to 'enter to learn, go forth to serve.' Not all the time are many students excited about reading a textbook. Its just words on a page. But with Norm Nemrow teaching this subject on CDs I think most students are interested in learning the subject in a different fashion. It arouses our senses a lot more than a textbook. Sometimes it is very hard to get excited about a subject like Accounting (sorry Norm). But when the subject is on CDs with a personality like Norm's it becomes a lot more exciting. It's hard to approach a difficult subject and make it become fun to learn just by reading a textbook day after day. On the CDs we're not just watching Norm talk at us. We're following along on our notes making comments. The more senses that we use in learning something the easier it is for us to remember certain concepts. There aren't too many flashy words or pictures in a book that will really stimulate your mind like a real person's personality, personal stories, experiences, and examples can in learning a subject. Basically what I'm getting at here is that, and I think most students would agree with me, watching Norm's CDs makes Accounting FUN! Yep, I said FUN! That is where the true learning takes place. If you can't enjoy going to class or learning about a certain subject, there is no way that you can really 'learn' and apply that knowledge to life then 'go forth to serve.' The class presentations are in every way, shape, and form displays of REAL WORLD APPLICATION. It's exactly what I said before in that we need to apply this knowledge to life to 'go forth to serve.' We've seen fraud specialists, tax experts, teachers and other professors from the Marriott School talking to us about ways to take what we learn and put that knowledge into action! Through making wise financial decisions we can see if we want to invest in stock, we can see what makes a business work. These are the same businesses that our happening in our neighborhoods and communities. These are the same kind of businesses that our dad's work for. We see all this happening in the world around us, then when we see things associated with these things we learn on the news, my gosh, it's REAL! They really use this stuff in the real world! Then seeing how this applies, Norm goes and picks up certain news articles from the Wall Street Journal, stuff that happened like yesterday, and puts on Blackboard for us to read! This is tons better than a textbook! He keeps adding stuff to the course for us to see how it applies today. Not only does Norm do that, but in his classes I continually find him applying things we learn to the gospel too! Can you believe this? I mean, it's like we really can see how gospel principles aren't just found inside church. It's all around us! This class seems to be spiritually uplifting at times! I know I'm rambling on, but one last thing. I haven't had a course or taken a class that emphasizes living the honor code as well as this class does. With students going out into the business world having a basis of accounting principles from Norm's class then BYU is on its way in sending out businessmen of high quality and high integrity. This class should be one all students should take! " I would just like to take a moment to comment on Norm’s method of teaching Accounting. I am not the smartest student around and I really feel that the lessons on the CD are very beneficial. I can listen to them at my own pace and he does an excellent job of presenting the material. I would highly recommend his CD's to anyone interested in learning business. The required classes also give us a chance to see what the 'real' business world is like. I really like this course and I have learned a lot! I like the way the class is set-up. I have learned a lot from the CDs. I like it because I could go at my own pace and finish when I wanted to. I like the class presentations and learned from them. The classes focus on a specific topic which is interesting. "Quite frankly, I think that this has been my favorite course here at BYU because of the CDs. I feel that it was much better to learn that way and to not have to bother with reading something that sometimes get to wordy. With the CDs I could move at my own pace and review lectures where I may not have understood the material as well as I should have. This allowed me to not just read and try to glean what I needed to know, but it allowed me to hear it over and over again from the teacher. Class presentations were always useful and applicable to life in general, something that I think is lacking in a lot of classes, no one shows you how it is really applicable because they are always to busy trying to get through the material. I wish that more classes were available that had this setup. " "I wish that all my classes were as innovative and creative as Norm's. I love the flexibility of the schedule, and the c.d. lessons are top-notch. I wish that my other business classes were as enjoyable. Even though I see Norm on a personal basis relatively little, I feel that I genuinely like him and that he embodies the principles that make BYU special and unique." I like the way of using CDs teaching very much. It helps me to use my time effectively and it's teaching is very clear and easy to understand. I'm also very appreciated that Professor Norma's teaching ethic is so honorable and his teaching skill is so great. I'm enjoying his teaching very much. I think that our course organization is very reasonable. " I can honestly tell you that my Accounting 200 class is one of the best classes I have taken at BYU. The CDs which Norm has created are very informative, very detailed, and very interesting. Not only do they allow me to learn at my own pace; they also allow me the opportunity to stop the CD, go over difficult material, and master it before moving on. Having someone 'talk' to you on a CD is much better than reading from a textbook. I find that it keeps me more alert to what is being said and, consequently, more interested. It is almost like having an hour-long one on one lecture with Norm about 3 times a week (in addition to our scheduled required class). I really have no complaints about the current Acc 200 class. I find that many others share my opinion that it is a well-organized, detailed, and informative class." "I think it is a great method, for teaching. I like it because it has many exercises in which I can practice. I think it is very helpful because I can view the cd's again whenever I don't understand something said. I am an international student and for me this is very helpful because this helps me to understand better, because I am able to put the cd and review the concepts I studied before." "The CD's have made accounting a most positive experience. I get to choose when to view them and at what speed, which is ideal when I just can't concentrate, I simply go back to the section I need to hear it again. I love accounting and that's something I don't think I would be able to say if this class wasn't set up the way it is" This is the best class I have taken at BYU. I've never had a professor who was more accessible and interested in students. The CD's have enabled me to learn the material more quickly and efficiently than I would be capable of in a traditional class setting. The class presentations have been most helpful because they have given me some career ideas. Every other class that I had taken before this semester and every other professor with whom I had spoken failed to adequately address career choices. It was as if college were something completely unrelated to actual job skills. I have changed my major to Accounting from a double major in Conservation Biology and Political Science and am excited to take more classes at the Marriott school. "I absolutely love it. I've learned more in a faster more efficient way. No, it's not traditional. But traditions are worthless unless they invigorate our minds and help us to excel. I'm a straight 'A' student, I study, I'm an academic. And I know that the way this class is set-up is great! This a university, we don't need a babysitter. While most instructors lecture off on their level anyway, this gives us the chance to learn on our level, at our pace, at our convenience. I wish all my classes were this way. I'd be able to do more. " "I think the CD's are an excellent way to learn; combined with the lesson notes they are just as effective, if not more so than a textbook. It is very helpful to be able to replay the CD's in order to refresh one's memory, or to further review a confusing concept. The CD's allow each student to learn at his or her own pace. Also, one can learn visually, and by audio, rather than just visually through a textbook, which is not sufficient for many students." The teaching style and methods including CDs and required classes is probably one of the best teaching methods I have seen. It allows people to work ahead if they wish and provides a way to review material again and again if needed. It is a great teaching program. I love the CD's. They allow to have a one on one experience with the instructor. If I miss a note or forget a lesson I can return and review the lesson. They have really helped me to understand Accounting and learn all of the principles that are being taught. I also enjoy knowing that I won't miss any information that is being given. The class presentations are nice because we have experts in the field come to us and tell us how it really is in the real world. I enjoy them very much. Through this method I have enjoyed learning Accounting. I like them. More than books. I am an international student and it's really cool stuff. A+ "I am not the accountant type, but after participating in this class, I am planning on majoring in accounting. The CD lectures are enjoyable, comprehensive, and self-explanatory. Never have I learned so much in so little time and so painlessly." I love the CD's and have learned so much. I think that everybody should start to incorporate this style of teaching. I plan on keeping these CD's so that I will be able to use them even after I have completed the class. I would rank this accounting class as the best class I have ever taken. It has made me think about changing my major to Accounting I have enjoyed learning this stuff so much. "I think the class overall has been great. It has become my favorite class. I truly believe that I have learned more in this class than any other in which I am enrolled. At first I was quite skeptical of the CDs, I have since changed my opinion drastically. I like the CDs because they allow my to review the material as often and as frequently as I would like. In a class so large, it is nearly impossible to have the class be personalized. With the CDs I am able to work at my own pace, reviewing topics as many times as I need without having to slow down others or be impeded in my own learning. I like having the CDs because of the examples that are on them. I am able to go over them as many times as I would like. If it were a class in which we only used class times and textbooks, it would be nearly impossible to replicate the live examples and problems. In all honesty, I wish that other classes would go to this format. I believe it has greatly enhanced my learning experience here at BYU." I feel that I actually was able to learn more by being able to view and review the cd's at will. I enjoyed the required classes in that it provided an actual real life taste to accounting. "I have really enjoyed learning from the CDs rather than a textbook. It is very helpful to have a detailed instruction from the instructor on the sometimes difficult material, and then have what I learned reinforced with a quiz. I really like the way the CDs allow me to move at my own pace also, and the required classes of Accounting 200 are great!" "I believe that the CD system is a very effective and efficient way of teaching Accounting. The ability to pause, review, or accelerate the learning process enables each student to learn at his or her own pace. The class presentations are VERY relevant to real life situations and prepare students for future application of accounting knowledge. I think the class is very well done and very worthwhile. I am a Zoology major who will be starting optometry school in the fall. This class has greatly enhanced my abilities to run not only my own practice but my own personal financial tasks as well. To be frank, I think that taking this class should be a requirement at BYU. The lessons learned are invaluable in making wiser and better-prepared graduates. In a traditional classroom setting, most students are too busy taking down copious notes to really listen, pay attention, and most importantly, learn the material adequately." "This CD lessons really help me as I am an international student, English is not my first language. As I can pause or repeat the CD lessons as many times as I want, I can understand the content of this class very well and take notes well. And also, because of the characteristic of CD, the lessons I have listened remains in my memory very well, and I can prepare for the exams well too because I just need to refresh my mind, what I listened from the CDs. If this course had to be just textbook lessons, I would do worse in this class. " "I would just like to say that Accounting 200 is my favorite class right now. Professor Norm Nemrow provides an excellent, independent way of learning accounting. I feel that I am learning what needs to be learned and even more! I appreciate Norm's help. He works harder than any professor that I have EVER had to help each student understand the concepts. His CDs have more information on them than could ever be covered in a class lecture. They are straightforward and informative. The assigned classes are so fun and interesting. I am, of course, bias since I am doing very well in the class. I am far from a smart person, but I have worked hard, and I really understand the material. I have done well. Professor Norm Nemrow is one of the best teachers I have had here at BYU and also in earlier schools. Moreover, his class is an exciting experience. If I would have had the chance to go back and choose between a text and lectures verses CDs and assigned classes, I would have DEFINITELY have stayed with the CDs and assigned classes! Sorry to talk your ear off. Thank you for your time." "I was skeptical of the CD based lectures when I started this course. I have come to wish that all my classes were taught in such a manner. The CD lessons are well planned and structured, and I am able to view them at my convenience. I am also able to review them as I need to. This allows me to more effectively study for tests, and being able to review a difficult concept for greater understanding is invaluable. I do indeed fervently wish that all my classes were taught in such a manner. The online quizzes assure that I do not get too far behind and are an important monitoring of my understanding. The required classes provide learned commentary and expansion on concepts taught in the course. They are most helpful in providing a context of color and importance for the principles presented in lecture. I whole-heartedly endorse this class, it's style, structure, and instructor." "This is my first time in my whole life taking accounting class. I found that CDs really help than textbooks and notes taking from the instructors. Many people who took accounting from other schools told me it is a hard class. These CDs help a lot because although I don't do well in tests but I have a chance to listen to them as many times as I want when I have time and it helps me with my quizzes at least I can pull up my grades. Another thing I like is that not only CDs are use but also there are practice questions you can practice. This is a lot plus labs where TAs are available to help. When I fail this class is because it is my first time, I have other classes which demand a lot of my time and I don't have that enough time to utilize labs and reviews sometimes but it is not that the method is bad. We are all undergraduate students and one day we will be graduate students so it is good sometimes to be responsible on our own by pushing ourselves to listen to CDs which are great. Does it make sense? Sorry English is my second language so I might be repetitious." I really enjoy the CDs that Brother Nemrow has prepared for us. I like how I am able to learn at my own pace. I appreciate the fact that we are able to hear things explained in detail and we aren't constrained to only an hour. Even though it really isn't one on one time with a professor you get the feeling that you aren't rushed and that you can spend time going back over what he has said to make sure you understand it. The required classes are nice because you get the opportunity to see how the things we are learning can be and are applied in 'real life'. I think that is an opportunity that most teachers don't take. I enjoy the class and feel like it is an excellent way in which to learn accounting. I really enjoy the CD's and the way this course is set up. The CD's are really helpful because I can go back and re-watch the parts that I didn't understand as easily. This is a wonderful class and Norm is a great teacher. "I conclude that the CD-accompanied accounting 200 course does help me to learn general accounting concepts; however, I do not think it is an adequate college-level course. Students are never asked to 'think outside the box' and professor-student interaction is not facilitated. Opportunities to ask questions are limited to office hours and 'education' persae is cheated. These CD/internet course may have greater success at BYU based on the nature of the Honor Code, but such programs will miserably fail elsewhere due to the corrosion of virtues such as honesty and integrity in our society. " "I am generally pleased with the CD lessons. I do not believe that a traditional textbook based accounting class would be more conducive to learning the material. However, because accounting 200 is such a large class I feel that small group labs built into the class once a week would greatly help those students who struggle with accounting." "Norm does a fantastic job of presenting the material for Accounting 200. Though the class is a lot of work and requires self-motivation, the CD's allow us as students to work at our own pace and review the material as needed. The required classes are very interesting. I do not believe traditional classroom time is essential in this course. In fact, the CDs cater to an individual's time and pace preferences. Norm presents the material very thoroughly. " "I really enjoy the Acc 200 CD's, and I find that it has been one of the best learning tools I have ever had. They allow me to review materials that I didn't understand from the Professor, and have helped me to learn accounting better than I could in a book! The required classes are also good, because they help me to understand the business world better. (I am not a business major, and they teach me a lot about business.)" I think that the CDs are a great tool. It is great that you can move at your own pace. I also think that the class presentations are interesting and helpful. "The accounting CD's are an effective approach to learning for several reasons. First, they are interactive. A textbook has all the info you need, but is much less inviting to digest. Next, the CD makes it easy to practice new principles. A book will give you problems to practice, but generally is followed by the answers, not specific explanations. The CD contains just as much info as a book might, but it is easier to locate and access. The lectures have been among the best I've ever heard. Rather than relying wholly upon his own experience, Norm invites specialists to present the subjects that he teaches. The course in general has been one of the best I've ever taken here at BYU! A cousin in Idaho, an accounting major, was amazed by the CD and requested one for himself. " "They are great! There is enough printed material in the printed power point slides that give the atmosphere of a book. Maybe one way to make the class better would be to assign small groups, such as t.a. labs so the students can be with other people in the class and study a little bit together. They should be assigned. Anyway, the class is very good and Norm's humor you can't get in a textbook! " "I really enjoy the cd lessons. I feel like they give me a good understanding of accounting. I especially like the fact that I can go back and review those parts that I didn't particularly understand. I think that is an incredible advantage because I can learn on my own at my own pace. I feel like I understand this better than if I would have to read it in a book. The presentations give me visual and audio that helps in understanding. I also think that the required classes are good. They pertain to the topic and give specific ways in which accounting can be applied in modern life. Overall I am very satisfied with this course, I have learned a lot and it's sparked my interest enough to take another Acc. class in the future. " "This the best class I've ever had. CDs are very helpful, and it's much more easier to learn the subject using them. Class presentations are wonderful, they are built in such a way that students can learn the material and at the same time find inner comfort. I'm grateful for having the opportunity to take the class from Norm Nemrow. If he teaches some another classes I would definitely take them from him because I like his way of teaching. " "I had the chance to take Accounting 200 a few years back with the traditional textbook/lecture format. This subject was difficult for me and I'm currently retaking Norm's class. All I can say is that I learn more by watching the cds and reaffirming what I've been taught by reviewing the notes provided than any other teaching method. The lessons are well organized. If I have any questions, reviewing the notes or a quick visit to the accounting lab clears things up." "I honestly think that this class is very informative. It is actually a relief to be able to learn in a different manner than reading straight from a text that makes accounting more confusing by the words they select. Also having the quizzes after makes me accountable, therefore I pay closer attention during the lecture. The required classes are also beneficial because of the real life application of the knowledge we obtain. We actually see that the world uses the things being taught. There is no application in any of my other classes." "I personally find it easier to focus on the lesson while watching it on CD than while in a classroom listening to a lecture. In the classroom, I am more apt to fall asleep or let my thoughts wander, especially during more boring lectures. The required classes have all been very interesting and beneficial to me -- not only for this accounting class, but for life in general." I personally love the way that the course is operated! Viewing the CD's on your own time and at your own pace is a definite benefit to how I learn. The quiz at the end of each lesson that must be taken by a certain date provides the motivation to view the lessons and complete the work. Coming to eight required classes is also a good idea. That way you are still able to be in 'lecture' and participate in class. The review sessions and lab that are available are a great way to provide that extra help that might be needed to learn the information. It is not too easy either. There is a lot of information that has been included and I feel that I have learned a lot and still enjoy it. It is very similar to completing independent study courses. I have really enjoyed the way it has been run! "I think the cd lessons is great. I am an international student and I do have a great trouble reading English books. But in the cd's it gives me a lot of fun not just boring text like books. The cd's help me a lot in learning. It is the best way of learning for me so far since I got here in BYU. I enjoy the live interaction and moving thing that gives me the knowledge that I need for the class, it is awesome. Class presentation is spectacular. I don't see anybody sleeping; it is a live learning atmosphere. Teacher, guest speaker are awesome and always get my attention. I just love being in this class and the humor in every class. I wish there's more like it. The course is amazing. I mean I came from a town that never heard of this business stuff before. I am very new and innocent in this business world and languages but I love it. Honestly it is the best class I ever had in the campus so far. IT gives me a lot of idea about the career that I want and have a passion with. I learn so much in this class. My low grades don't show the knowledge that I learn from this class. To tell you the truth this class gives me a better idea and clearer vision of my ambition in life. This class is generally awesome and amazing. Not to mention the great teacher who educate us in the subject matter and spiritually and with a lot of fun.(That's the best part.)" "At first I was a little skeptical of taking a course like this, but I have actually liked it. It allows flexibility in the schedule that college students need. It has provided enough information that is pertinent to the real world so that I go and read the Wall Street Journal and not have a blank look on my face half the time which was the norm before. And I know that if we were to have textbooks, we wouldn't read the whole thing anyway. It is also light on our budgets. That is a very very nice thing." "I really love the course itself. I have found the course not too difficult, but that is because I had two years of previous accounting experience, and I love this stuff. But I feel that the course moves very quickly and involves too much for most other students. I will admit, I love this stuff and I have had difficulties. For those who are not interested by it, I bet they are suffering. I like the CDs and how you can go at your own pace, but I also miss the in class instruction and relationship. I love talking with my teachers, and this dampens things. As a whole, the course is brutal, but good. " "I was a bit skeptical as to whether listening to CDs and going to a lecture every once in a while would help me to learn accounting. But, I have since discovered that it is in fact more beneficial to me; it allows me to move at my own pace and spend more time on selections that I don't fully understand. I get an excellent review for the test and go back over lectures as often as I feel it is necessary. I wouldn't get that comprehensive of a review unless I video recorded every lecture. Along those same lines, people who understand accounting fully can more at a faster pace than those who don't understand accounting as well. It definitely helps them, being able to move at a faster pace, because everyone I know who is in a class that is too easy or that they feel confidant about tend to fall asleep in class, skip, or don't do homework. In addition, someone who does not feel strong about a lesson can go into Brother Nemrow's office hours; he is always welcoming and encourages it. " "I have really enjoyed the class and being able to use the CDs to listen to the lecture. I am afraid that it would be incredibly boring and slow to sit through lecture as he explained concepts to people who don't understand. It takes a lot of patience to sit through exam reviews when Mr. Nemrow prepares us for tests, so I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to sit through a semester of lectures that way. Sure, he makes them funny and enjoyable, but he can do that on CDs too. I enjoy the fact that it lets me work at my own pace. It has worked really well." "The cd's are a great way to get into accounting. I have enjoyed having the cd's because of the advantage of doing them when you have time. The problem that I have with them is that it takes the student/teacher interaction completely out of the issue. I am here on campus to learn firsthand with feedback. If I wanted to learn by correspondence than I would have stayed home. Don't get me wrong I feel that the cds are a great way to get information out there, but what will happen if other programs on campus incorporate this same tactic. Soon we will have a lot of people with a lot of information, but lack the skills to interact with those around then. What are we trying to cultivate at this university. At BYU I thought overall excellence is what we boast of most. Going to online professors will turn us into the drones that teach us. " "I don't really like the CD's as a regular class lesson. For me it is really hard to understand and I do not get answers right away. It would be much better and helpful to have more classes. The TA's are nice, but sometimes I do not get what I hope to get and it is also a matter of time. The Lab is good though." "There couldn't be a more appropriate way to teach a beginning level class. In fact, I wish many more courses were offered in a similar manor. There are very few if any downfalls about using the CD's as a great resource to learn material. If something is not easily understood, the CD's can be reviewed multiple times until the concept is clear. Also, Norm has plenty of office hours and is very helpful when there is something that you just can't get. Hurray for interactive learning! Keep it up Norm!!! BYU Student" "The use of CDs for Acc 200 is an excellent idea. Textbooks can be good, but for this class CDs have the advantage. By using the CDs I am able to adjust the speed and listen accordingly. Bro. Nemrow does allow someone to use a textbook if he or she really wants to, but who would? The brain processes information fast. The use of CDs allows people to learn at a faster rate, if they have the right equipment, which Bro. Nemrow provided information on where to find it. When one reads his/her mind might wander. The CDs make it more difficult to do so. When I listen to it at a faster speed than normal, I concentrate more on it. This is normally true with everyone. Think about it. If someone was talking to you fast, do you concentrate more? Class presentations are all helpful. " "I believe it is an excellent way to teach a class and I have gotten a great deal out of it. What other class format lets you repeat lectures or parts thereof that were difficult to grasp? Another advantage is that I can do the class when it is best for me and I am refreshed and ready for class. Last semester I went to a number of classes tired and not prepared, but there was no other way to get around it. Norm is fun to listen to and each lecture is well presented. I honestly believe I have gotten more out of the cd lecture series than I would have being forced to attend class twice a week. I only wish there were more classes set up this way. " I greatly appreciate the unique way in which Brother Nemrow has decided to teach this accounting class. I feel like I have a much greater understanding of each subject than I could get out of a textbook. The CD lessons are an excellent way for me to learn because I can do it at a speed I choose and when I'm alert. The 8 required lectures have been quite enlightening and a very good way for me to learn. "I personally have enjoyed the cd approach. I work in the morning and so my schedule becomes difficult to manage; however with the cd I am able to work on my own time. With the required quiz there is no tendency to slack off and not listen to the quizzes either. Another thing that I have really liked about them is that the screen on the right can actually put the principle into real life practice that seems to help make it real." "The method of Norm is excellent, probably the best I have ever seen in the universities I have been. 1. You can manage your time. 2. You can relisten to the CD-s as many times as you want. 3. If anyone has problems goes to talk to Norm. 4. We have a very good exam review. 5. It is productive. 6. I have learnt a lot from this class and it has become much more easier that anyone can expect it to be. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. Norm you are the best. Sincerely Gentian Mullaj" "I love it!!! I think the CD's are very educational. I probably learn more from the acc 200 cd's than I ever do attending my economics 110 or stats 221 classes. I know I learn more from the cd's than I would from reading a textbook. Norm organizes the information so clearly and emphasizes the important points. If I were required to read a textbook, I would probably skim it and only retain half of the information. By not requiring a daily class, I am able to fit the accounting lessons in when I choose to, and thereby focus my attention to a greater extent. It allows me to really go over the material and review anything that I might have missed. I learn a lot, and am able to go at my own pace. The class presentations are also very useful. I learn information from them. Besides the after class quiz or report, accountability for these classes is on each student's honor. I find that I retain this information and it is very applicable to both my daily life and my instruction in the cd's. I appreciate the trust I have been given with these lessons and have not betrayed it. I think most students are the same way. I enjoy the way this class is taught and wish more were taught in a similar fashion." The CDs are both convenient and valuable learning tools; they teach the basic concepts of accounting and allow the student to progress at his/her own pace (a major weakness in most lecture-based classes is the dependence on the teacher proceeding at the wrong pace for every student). "I love the CDs. With the CDs and the Enounce software, I learn things much better the first time because I can speed it up so that I have to focus and pay attention. With a traditional class the teacher will sometimes go so slow that I get bored and don't pay attention, or they are going so fast I miss parts of what they are saying. With the CDs, if I don't understand something the first time I can replay it, or push pause and think about it for a while. The required classes are interesting because they give real world experience and discussions that one normally wouldn't get if the teacher had to lecture on the material from the textbook. I wish more of my classes were set up like Accounting 200 because I am learning a lot and much more efficiently then I do with a regular textbook/lecture set up." "I personally have not taken the online class from Norm Nemrow, but have heard much about his successful approach to teaching via interactive CD. I am a student at UVSC and am currently enrolled in their online accounting class there. I feel that it is an excellent program and provides greater opportunity to the student who does not always have time to go to campus to study and learn. In addition I think that it is a major compliment that although I am not a student at BYU, I familiar with how good his class is by all the positive remarks I have heard from those enrolled in his class. It is because of what I heard about his interactive class, that I chose to seek similar classes at UVSC. Besides what's the difference between watching it on a computer screen and watching it in class room." "I think the CD's are great! The lectures are more than three hours a week, (what a normal three credit class would require) but since I can listen to them at 2.5 times the normal speed, I get more information than a normal three credit class in less time!!! I wish all of my classes could be on C.D.! It makes for a very flexible work load which is great." "I took Norm's CD course last year, and it is one of the best courses I've taken. Norm gives very interesting lectures, and I feel like I learned a lot. If I missed a concept I simply had to back up and get the entire lecture again if I wished to. The concepts were very well explained. The 8 classes we had were not all very beneficial to me, but a lot of that was my fault for not paying better attention. I can definitely say, however, that I really enjoyed the course Norm taught. He got me interested in accounting, and that is my planned major." "The CDs allow time to complete assignments around a busy schedule, but I like personal interaction in a lecture atmosphere. Question and answer sections and daily review of the materials would better help me retain the information. The CDs are much better then a book though. " "March 28, 2002 Norm Nemrow's CD based Accounting 200 materials are some of the finest learning tools I have ever encountered. The organizational format of the CD's is such that students can digest the material at any pace they are capable of, and enables tremendous flexibility in student schedules that are overcrowded with scholastic, family, financial and religious concerns. Additionally, the material is saturated with excellent interactive enhancements that allow the student to quickly isolate and focus on their weak areas.” Lot's of times when you read out of a textbook you skip over a lot of material that is either not interesting or hard to understand. With the CD's any questions and sticky points that one may have you can stop and listen to the information again and is a lot easier to understand the material when you can listen to it a couple of times. I am learning a lot more from the CD's then I have ever done reading a textbook. Accounting 200 class with Norm Nemrow takes a boring subject and makes it interesting. "Honestly, I could not speak better about these CD's. They are the best form of learning that I have experienced not only here at BYU but also in the community colleges I attended. The CDs allow you to go at you own pace, and I mean that in two ways. One, you can do the CDs whenever you want as long as it is before the deadline. Also, the Enounce Software allows me to increase the voice track to a level where I can still take information and saves me time. Also, they allow me to pause the lecture at anytime. This is great for me because I like to take a lot of notes. In other classes, I find myself scrabbling to write all the information I can. While I am doing that, the professor has gone on to another topic and I've missed some key information. With Norm, I pause, write down the points, and resume the lecture. And if I miss anything, I just rewind. On top of these great CDs, we have our lectures. These lectures are fantastic and very applicable. I find the information and guest lectures very interesting. And it all ties back into what we learn with the CDs. I own the textbook for the class, but I have yet to open it up. Why? It is because Norm gives us so many opportunities to learn the information. We have the CDs, the lectures, the TA reviews, Norm's 5 hour long exam review, and practice exams. There is so much information and practice that I have scored 95% on my exams. What a great class! I am seriously considering accounting as a career thanks to this class. " "I feel that Acc 200 is run in an technologically advanced method. I am impressed with the amount of time Norm has taken to compile the CDs; they are top quality. From an economical point of view, the CDs are much more cost effective than a book, and they contain as much, if not more, information than a textbook. " "Though time consuming, the cd's are very clear and concise in teaching the appropriate material. They offer helpful homework problems as well as other supplemental opportunities to learn the material. The class has proved very challenging, but I feel that proper time allotment allows for success in the class. The class presentations usually provide supplemental information and tangents to current material being studied. They are usually interesting and helpful. " "For someone who takes the attitude of suffering through accounting since it has nothing to do with my major, I love it. I'm taking this class for my own good, but it’s quite enjoyable to have the CD's and the 8 lectures are just plain interesting. Having a textbook with this class would literally make me hate it, and I would feel it a burden to learn it. Whereas on the CD's, its easy to understand, and thorough" "The CDs used for accounting are very effective in helping me learn the material. It helps so much to be able to take my own pace, listen to parts over again, and have time for detail that a classroom setting would not allow for. I know that if I was reading all this out of a textbook it would be MUCH more dull and honestly, I probably wouldn't read it and end up doing much worse in the class. I feel I have learned so much from this class and think the use of technology is very beneficial." "Norm Nemrow has brought learning into the new millennium. The cd's are flexible and very much more productive than a traditional approach, customizable to meet students needing additional review or less repetition. There will always be dark-age era instructors unable to stay current with student needs, but Norm has proven he isn't one of them. I wish more instructors would think out their presentations as well as Norm." "I have really liked the Accounting CDs. It is nice to be able to view them when I want. It is also nice to have a computer program that speeds up the professor's voice, allowing him to speak clearly, and making it easier for me to stay awake." In my opinion I would be surprised if I didn't take more and more classes similar to the set up that Pro. Nemrow takes towards his accounting 200 class. The CD's allow for the students to be responsible for learning the information just like other college classes with a text book...you can read the CD lesson's if you'd like but listening to them adds a new dimension to learning. You can go back over the lessons you don't understand by simply clicking the back button and you are asked to do the homework problems during the lesson to allow for greater understanding and then quizzed immediately after to check comprehension. I know that with textbooks these homework problems are rarely done unless assigned as mundane busywork, which only makes more work for the TA's. There are ample places to get help in this class if one is struggling...review sessions are every week along with a lab that has very flexible hours. Personally I think that this is the best set up class that I am taking. I really enjoy Norm's real life lectures, which teach us much more than just the academic basics we cover in the lessons. The lecture series allows one to really hear about what we can do in the 'real' world and some of the real issues that we deal with everyday. I wouldn't want this class taught any other way. "I think the CD's are wonderful. I started an accounting course at Idaho State University with basically the same content as Norm's class and I hated it with all my heart. My grades were so awful on the first tests that I ended up dropping the class. But Norm's approach is wonderful. I don't have to understand everything on the first try. I can listen to different parts of the CD's over and over. The supplemental required classes are totally helpful and I just think the structure of the entire class is ingenious. Norm has done a wonderful job in creating a course that can reach every type of learner. I have learned a ton and I have actually enjoyed it. The class seems so relevant and I wish everyone at BYU could take it. The CD's class presentations and the course in general are VERY effective and do a great job in presenting the complex concepts of accounting,. Go NORM!" "I think the approach to education being taken in Acc 200 is groundbreaking. It is advantageous to students of any level of intelligence. The brighter students who learn faster can go as fast as they want in each presentation and they learn much more because they aren't bored or held back by other students. On the other hand, those students who don't pick up the concepts as quick can slow down and go over the lesson as many times as they need to in order to understand the concepts. I love this method and wish most of my classes could be done like this. It requires a lot of work and time, but it is time I can take whenever I want, which allows me to work the hours I need and still get the same amount of school work done. I fully support this teaching method and would encourage other teachers to consider implementing similar teaching styles while still allowing students one-on-one support when necessary, as the Acc 200 lab does." "I have found the CDs to be very good for learning. If you don't understand something, you can go over it until you understand it without holding others back. You also still have use of TAs. Likewise, if you understand it already, you can speed through it. Either way, you are still held responsible by quizzes and tests. Even on the CDs, Norm still explains things very well and in ways that are easy to understand. The few required classes have been very good and informative, and seem to be enjoyed by all. Despite a desire to see Norm everyday in class, I feel that the method of teaching with CDs and quizzing over the internet is very good. I have learned a lot from this course." "I think the CD's are an efficient method of relaying the information for this basic accounting class. I like being able to work at my own speed, and feel that the information learned is relevant. The in class lectures provide good practical information, but are not to frequently held as to make them routine and boring." "I have absolutely loved the accounting 200 class. the fact that I can go at my own pace both with the enounce software (the ability to speed up the teacher) and the ability to do lessons whenever I want. I had a pretty hefty schedule this semester and it was very nice to be able to finish the class right after the break. I felt a learned a lot about accounting and was generally impressed. I think that more classes should be done this way as it is so convenient for scheduling purposes and being able to turn a two-hour lecture into an hour lecture also helps me pay attention. My only criticisms of the class is first that it is difficult to ask questions (though probably because I am just too lazy to go to the accounting lab. Second, there were some parts I found to be a little unclear and reviewing the CDs and the lecture notes didn't answer it, I wish I had had a textbook to refer to. Overall I loved the course, I wish more courses were like that and found it convenient, informative and interesting. "CD lectures are a great way to learn for me personally because I can go at my own pace and I can go back whenever I need to. It is awesome because it is equal to having a personal tutor. 8 required classes added a lot to my understanding of business and the role accounting plays in a business world. Besides, the CD lectures are more detailed and very interactive for me, you can't possibly fall asleep as often happens when you are trying to read a textbook. I took an accounting class at LDS BC where they use books but mostly teacher did the explaining and I felt that buying a book was a waste of my money. Thus CD lessons is way more effective than the textbooks which by most part are pieces of junk anyway because writers use smart words and you have to spend additional hour or more just interpreting what the writer tried to say. It is not just me being an international student, even American students struggle!!! Norm, it is great that you introduced the CD lessons, way to go! I give you my support all the way!" I wish Professor Kearl would have done this for his class. It would have made it a lot easier to understand and to study difficult concepts. "I think it is unfortunate that there are people that are so afraid of technological advances that they are unwilling to try new ideas, and instead remain for from the cutting edge because of their pathetic traditionalistic viewpoints." I like the CD's. I can re-play it if I don't understand and I can go at my own pace. I think the CD's are a great learning tool they are informative and have allowed me to learn the material very well. I very rarely read textbooks because it is inefficient way for me to learn. I am not a poor student who just doesn't like to read as I have a 3.7 GPA. "I actually really like the option that I have to watch the cds by myself and work at my pace. I can review when I want to and jump ahead if I want to. It gives me responsibility and it gives me more power to understand at my level. If I were to complain it would be that his test and his questions are a bit tricky. As far as required classes go, they are the best, we all realize that it’s obvious of importance what they are going to share with us and we pay attention. The world is changing, I believe that Norm has really taken a step into the future." "I was a little surprised at the format at first, but after 2/3 of the class I can honestly say I love it. It works out great to be able to watch the CD's at home on my computer. Also, the required classes are a great introduction to the business and accounting world. I also gained some spiritual insights through the classes. Finally, the teacher (Norm) makes learning accounting fun and interesting." I think that the course setup is excellent. I really enjoy learning the material from the CD's because I can view them whenever I want and use enounce to digest material quickly. I feel that the course is rigorous but also doesn't waste my time. My impression of the course material is that it is taught in a get to the point way. A way where I can learn what I need to know quickly and not be bother with useless material. I like how I am not only taught the material but through examples on the CDs and the required classes I can see the usefulness of the material. I wish that other freshman level classes were taught in this format. (I think that stats 221 would be a good candidate) I really enjoy watching the CDs. I like that I can go at my own pace and complete the lessons whenever I feel like I can pay the most attention to the material presented. I think it is a great way to learn. I also think that the required 8 classes are very informational. We are able to use that time to have relevant lectures on real life situations. It is nice not to have to use that time to learn accounting. I like how this class is set up and I think it is very beneficial for all the students enrolled in the class. "The Interactive CD accounting 200 has been one of the best class that I have taken here at BYU. Even so that I do not need this class for my major or minor, I am taking it because I heard so many good things from my roommates and friends about the class. Everyone that has taken this class from Norm has loved it and the convenience of watching the lectures here at home has even made the class more enjoyable! As for as the required lectures, I think that they are great. It is good to hear from different professors that I would not be able to other wise. I have ADD, and I often struggle paying attention in large classes, I can focus so much better watching the CD's at home, if I need a break I can pause and take a break!" I enjoyed having the freedom of the CD's. IT allowed for me to decide when I had time to do the course work and I could do it from anywhere. I thought that the fact that there was quiz's allowed for us to make sure we kept on top of things. "I think the CDs are a great way to teach Acc 200. Norm does a wonderful job of covering all topics and explaining everything to the fullest. I can view a certain section, as many times as I want, and for the first time I can actually 'pause' the professor when I'm overwhelmed. I have learned more in this class about the subject matter than any other class. I only wish could have taken Econ 110 is the same manner. The 8 required classes are a great way to bring together the ideas and topics we are learning about. And if we approached the class in a more traditional manner, I don't believe that we would be able to have such interesting lectures, but rather would be forced to cover material that couldn't otherwise be addressed on CD." "So far, my experience with the CDs for Accounting 200 has been marvelous. I learn so much in each CD. It isn't as boring as reading some lame accounting textbook, and yet it really challenges me to learn the material. Personally, I think that the CDs are the best medium that I have ever used to learn. The class presentations are great too. I look forward to all of them because they teach me about different aspects of business that are related to accounting. Many students have a lot of difficulty deciding what to major in, and I truly believe that the class presentation help some of the students to get a better idea of what they want to do. I personally have learned tons about different aspects of business because of the class presentation. For the past year I have been trying to find out more about various occupations in the business world - and frankly, I wish I had have taken this class last year! It would have sped up the process. I also think that Norm's review sessions before the test are outstanding. Overall, I think that the course is excellent. " "I think the CDs are a great idea. I would have not taken the class this semester, if I had to go to class every other day. I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and to say the least I would have not been able to make it to class because of morning sickness. The way this class is set up allows me to be able to still take a class this semester, but not have to be in class. The CDs allow you to go back and review whenever you want and the homework reinforces the concepts that need to be learned. I also am able to go through the lessons at the time best for me with just deadlines to meet for the quizzes. The deadlines keep you on track so you do not get behind. I have really enjoyed this class and have learned a lot. " I have learned far more from Norm Nemrow's accounting CD's than I ever would have from a book. It helps me enormously to be able to hear his explanations as many times as I like. I am able to understand extremely foreign concepts with the help of the CD presentations. The required lectures given periodically throughout the semester help to tie in the practicality of accounting in our day-to-day lives. I think that this class in general has been one of the most important and pertinent to real life classes I have taken so far. The method of teaching is different which I have greatly enjoyed. The CD's allow me to take class lectures home with me so that when I lose attention like everyone does in class I can go back to what I missed. The class lectures are great because Norm gets people who have greater expertise in certain areas that Norm may not. "To be honest, the first couple times I used the CD's I wasn't sure this class would be worth it. Looking back, however, I am amazed at how much I have learned. Yes, in many cases I suppose the use of textbooks is ideal but I wouldn't say that this class was any less worthy of a college course than MANY other classes that I have taken. In fact, for an entry-level course I would say that it is perfect. Not only is the course challenging but also the class presentations make the information applicable to real life situations. Ten cheers for accounting 200 and norm newrow. I wish the history department would take some tips (history 201/ 202). I enjoy accounting 200 and call me crazy...I’m actually planning to go on to get my masters in accounting" "I am grateful to having the CD's. I am a visual learner and I don't get as much out of a textbook. The Cd's are a great idea especially because I am able to watch the lesson material on my own terms. The way that the course is set up, I still have two or three quiz sessions that force me to actively participate in class. The class presentation enhances and reinforces the learning that I get from the CD's. I also appreciate knowing that if I have a question I can email or telephone at that very moment, and receive a relatively quick response to my question. I feel that this course embraces the LDS Church's ideal for using technology in a positive and uplifting manor." "I really like the CD's. I think that I get a lot more out of them than I do a regular textbook. I don't know why more classes are not like this. It is more hands on because the homework is built into the lecture so it seems more practical and all the principles are direct and upfront not like other GE classes where the teacher teaches useless material that you memorize and then you cram for at the last second and take a test that it mostly written to have trick questions and you end up being tested on only a small portion of what was studied so a teacher can get a 'good' rating on their test. I'm here to learn and this is one of the first classes where I feel I've actually learned something. Most other classes I feel like I am taught stuff but it goes in one ear and out the other. The class presentations help to give a real world experience to the class and show that the things we are learning about is actually happening and not just in an outdated text book. I think that more classes should be put on CD's like this, especially with a great teacher like Norm Nemrow. He cares about what he teaches and wants use to know how to do what is required, while encouraging outside study also. I think the course deserves an award!" "My learning experience in Accounting 200 has been one of the best I've had at BYU. The CDs cater to my individual learning needs. Because I can control the pace of the CDs and watch a lesson as many times as I want, I don't waste time being bored with easier concepts or find myself confused because a topic has been covered too quickly. Listening to the CD lessons as opposed to reading a textbook has given me a more efficient and more enjoyable learning experience. And I feel like I've learned the material better that I would from textbook readings, which I, like most students, tend to skim if I read them at all." "The course has been great for me. Maybe some people don’t learn in the same way as I do but for me, the cd's have allowed me to learn the material much better than any other class that I have attended at BYU and I am a senior so I have had a lot of classes. I am taking the course as a pre requisite for My MBA "First of all, you have to understand that what I say in the next few sentences are not lies, nor exaggerations of the truth. This is my favorite class that I have taken at BYU up to this point. It is a challenging class, not a cakewalk. It requires time, and dedication, and his non-traditional teaching tools are out of the 'NORM,' (no pun intended) but they are very effective, and a lot of fun. If you have problems, the T.A. lab is very useful, and easily accessible. Lets be honest, it’s a great class!" I believe that the cd's that Norm Nemrow uses to teach Acc. 200 are very effective. I feel that through the cd's and the eight required classes I am receiving an excellent education. "I have found the cds to be an excellent learning tool. It is easy to grasp the concepts on the cds because they are interesting, normal texts are a little boring. Norm is an excellent teacher. He's awesome." "Well I actually listen to the CD's unlike many professors of the which I choose not to attend lecture, for lack of informational quality. I really enjoy the Cd approach and think that it is a good way to learn. I think that at first it would be nice to have some kind of packet that has the t accounts already on them, but other than that I really like the course." "I would say that the CD's to teach accounting 200 is fine, a student has the opportunity to review them at their own pleasure and convenience, where they cannot do that with a lecture based course. The 8 required classes go beyond what is expected, are a good because we are taught real world applications for what we are learning. I would suggest breaking the tests down into smaller chapters covered. Like only a chapter or two for each test. There is so much information covered, and in some cases it may have been a month since a student viewed some of the lessons covered in a test. That is a long time to remember small details, which with a book could be quickly found and reviewed. It is a big pain to review the CD's for the information I want to find. This suggestion means more tests, but I feel that the overall understanding would increase. I hope this can be of some help." "I am an absolute fanatic about this class. I'll graduate this April, and I decided I couldn't leave BYU without taking an accounting class. However, I never expected it to be this amazing. Quite honestly, this has to be one of the best classes I have ever taken and I find that it will be completely applicable in my future endeavors. As far as the CD's go, I find they're absolutely helpful and convenient. I think they're the BEST way to learn. Not only can I watch them at my own pace, but also I can go back over them again and again on difficult concepts. Quite frankly, I personally haven't found any need for a textbook or even a TA for that matter. I believe the class presentations are extremely helpful and interesting. I find Norm Nemrow to be an excellent teacher, again, perhaps the best I have ever had. I don't know that all teachers could make the class presentations as interesting. But even without the class presentations, this class is already stimulating and challenging enough. Overall, this course is honestly the best laid out course I have ever taken in all my years at BYU. My only suggestion would be to lighten the workload on the pre-class assignments. This class is already the most time consuming class I have this semester and at times I think those assignment take a little longer than they should. Sorry these comments weren't brief, but I am truly appreciative of this course and I think Norm deserves much more credit for finding ways to improve education. "It has been great! I think that using the CDs is an awesome idea. I really have learned so much, and it is nice to be able to go back through the CDs if there was some concept that I didn't quite understand the first time. Plus, the CDs are convenient, however, they do not allow for much slack either because of the assigned quizzes. Over-all I have enjoyed the class and found the CDs to be very useful and a great learning tool!" "I have found the Accounting 200 course to be quite informative and well put together. Norm does a wonderful job of teaching the material and does it in such a way on the CD's that it is much better that many of the classes that I must attend at BYU. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical at first, but I have found the class to be excellent." "The accounting 200 CD, in my opinion, is one of the best learning tools I have ever used. I love the ability to re-play the portions of the lessons that I have a hard time understanding. The way Norm walks us through the examples are excellent, it really solidifies the concepts. The CDs are so much better than traditional lectures because I often space out for a little bit and end up missing important concepts. But with the CDs, I have the ability to rewind and play the parts that I didn't pay attention to. Because I have watched all the CDs, I think the class presentations are much more fulfilling. I understand all the topics discussed and am able to ask intelligent questions. Overall, I think this accounting class is one of the best classes I have taken yet here at BYU. I am an international student, and I sometimes have trouble with English. The learning from the CDs gives the ability to learn the topics at my own pace. " "I have to admit that I love the CD's. It is almost like reading the book with the professor there. I love how Norm's talking coincides with the slides that appear, and I can always go back and watch something again. I will be honest and tell you that this is the second time that I am taking this class. I am not doing very well because I am not at all talented in this type of work. But comparing between the textbook style course from the Stice brothers (who were great) and the CD's with Norm, I would take the CD's any day. I also think the classes are great because they do not focus entirely on a review of what is found in the CD's but the class becomes a real life interpretation of accounting and about business life in general. Thanks." "I honestly love the class and have learned so much about business and accounting. I feel like we get so much more covered because there isn’t any digressing or getting off the tangent. I am not sure if it were a normal class that we would get as much done as if the class were to be a normal class. We do learn a lot." "At first I wasn't quite sure about the CD's, but know I am sure that it is a great way to learn, and just as good, if not better than the regular boring class approach. The class presentations are excellent, the lectures by the guest speakers provide a more focused look on the subject we are studying, the class is great" "Using the CDs, presents Accounting 200 in a very interesting and creative way. The CDs are enjoyable to watch and listen to, much more so than reading a textbook. I can learn just as much information and in a much more interesting way. The class presentations are always interesting and talk about ways that the topics we learn in the CDs are being used in 'real life' and current events. I think that the way that the class is currently run is very effective. " "I am a second semester sophomore and I am currently taking Norms Acc 200 class. With out any question in my mind, I can honestly and enthusiastically say that Acc 200 from Nemrow is BY FAR the best college course I have ever experienced. The Accounting material presented in this class can be difficult to understand but Norm's CD lessons offer a learning experience that is million's times better than trying learn from a traditional learn-from-a-textbook approach that most professors use. CD lessons are far more entertaining and thus, make learning easier than the traditional approach. The Quiz's make sure that students have learned the material and the exams are the fairest evaluation of my learning that I have ever experienced. The class is very well organized which provides clear expectations and accountability. The 8 required classes offer real-life application of the accounting principles taught.” "I have really enjoyed the innovative approach to accounting. I haven't performed as well as I would have liked to on the tests, but I know I would have done worse had I been trying to learn it out of a textbook. I think it makes the course more attractive especially to those who aren't naturally drawn to accounting. The required classes have been great. They seem more relaxed, informative, and entertaining than normal lectures. Overall, ROCK ON, NORM!!!!" "Concerning Norm Nemrow's Acc200 course. It is the best class I have taken in my BYU experience. The cd's are clear, help me understand the material, I love them. Norm's tests are fair- if you study you will do well. The tests are an accurate reflection of our abilities in the course material. In all honesty, I hate reading text books for classes, I rarely read the books in my other courses, they are dull, boring, and if I do read them, it is just to study for a test or I just search for the answer to a problem. In listening to Norm's cd's I find myself making a conscious effort to understand, to actually learn and remember, not just learn how to solve problems or answer questions. I find that the cd's combat shirking. Reading a book is awesome no doubt you can learn, but Norm's cd's also have provided me with critical communication skills-- which I will need in the business. By observing Norm explain things I am getting ideas on how to make things more understandable to others when I explain things. As far as the required classes, they are excellent, I've learned more from those required classes, I am so thankful for Norm and the knowledge he has provided us with.” "I cannot emphasize enough the quality of my experience in Accounting 200. I hold in high regard all of the general aspects of the class. The CD lessons were not only comprehensive, but they were convenient, easy to use, and a wonderful teaching tool. I feel that my experience in using the CD lessons not only superseded the educational objectives of the course, but also presented material in an exciting way--making me WANT to learn. In addition to the CD lessons, the class presentations were interesting, well thought out, and definitely worth attending regardless of assignment requirements. The tests were fair representation of course objectives, and help was always available when needed. Frankly, it is probably one of the better-designed university level courses I have ever taken. I commend the Accounting faculty and Professor Nemrow for their concern for the innovative and exciting approach to the subject, and the overall high-grade educational experience in Accounting 200. "I think the CDs are great. I honestly don't see how they differ much from the in-class power point presentations, except that you can do them at 3 in the morning and no body cares. It also offers a great tool for studying, since Norm is immortalized and we can always refer to exactly how he worded a particular concept. I favor the CDs to reading a textbook, honestly. I have a hard time keeping up with reading for my classes and often fall asleep or get distracted and consequently don't get much out of them. The CD lectures are entertaining and Norm answers everything you need to know. If he doesn't answer your question by the end of the lab it is still easy to call the TA lab and get it answered. I also like the required classes. They are informative and show how the curriculum is applicable in the real world, but at the same time separate an application from material we need to focus on for tests. This allows for a more relaxed inclass environment so we can just sit back and enjoy the lecturers. I admit that I've had some great frustrations when the computer I'm working on just doesn't like the CDs or cuts me off in the middle of a quiz. Those are just the quirks of technology, but I think Norm’s methods are great. " "Although I thought the CDs would be great in theory, I have not been satisfied. I work in a computer lab and have only once had them work appropriately. I am an A students with an F or D in accounting -- I just do not grasp information on CDs and then just don't listen to them. Norm is such a wonderful teacher -- I enjoy thoroughly all of the lectures AND I learn in person. For those of us who are not business majors but need this for our major (communications is mine), accounting can be and usually is an enormous struggle. I have tried the lab, but they are all 'smart' but can't explain the concepts clearly. Overall, they work for some people but I think there should be a section of CDs (online section) and a normal lecture schedule for people like me: )" "I think that the manner in which this accounting 200 class is run is wonderful. You are able to learn all the required material at your own speed, and the CDs allow you to go over difficult material as many times as you feel it necessary. I also really enjoy the required classes, as they seem to give insight into the accounting world and the business world in general that goes above and beyond just the straight accounting lessons. Norm is a great lecturer and professor, and I have thoroughly enjoyed his class thus far." "I was dismayed when I transferred to BYU to find out that the accounting course I took down at Snow, which I was told would cover ACC 200, actually didn't. However, had I not taken the accounting course earlier, I would be totally lost as to the bigger picture of the whole journal/ledger concept. The CDs are great, but they and the little 'were you listening' problems involved don't teach me anything about how all of these concepts fit together and interact with each other. Down at Snow, we had textbook and workbook stuff to do, and while each assignment was outstanding (each one took a week or two), the teacher would go over in class parts of each one and give other examples, too. I got an A in that class. I doubt I'm getting anything near that here, though I invest as much or more time in it. Norm is a great teacher. (I've commented, in fact, that his class sessions are so much fun it's like learning accounting from Bill Cosby) I wish he wouldn't hide behind software and huge SRO (standing room only) lecture halls. It would be nice for him to give examples in class (regularly scheduled) from regular project assignments we were working on, and not just the little T-account diagrams he draws up on the overhead. --give us accounting ledgers to work from and also some accounting software to use. Good luck, Norm. I hope this frank feedback works. I wish you taught (again, more traditionally, of course) more of my classes! " "My name is Eric Sampson. To be to the point, I LOVE the CD's and think they're great. Not just great, but INCREDIBLE! Not to mention very well done. Perhaps the fact that Professor Nemrow is so good in teaching and in front of the camera makes these CD's so incredible. Of all the subjects I am studying this semester, I feel like Accounting 200 is the one where I am taking home, so to speak, the most material and I think it's the CD's created that learning environment. Personally, I love the CD's because I can go home to my laptop on my time during the day, whether it's at 9:00 AM at the regular class time or at 8:00 PM at night when before I just had no time at all, and just sit and study. If there is anyone that doesn't like this format of learning, it must be because they hate going to a computer lab. It's possible that some have a hard time getting to a computer, or even an available computer where it's a convenient location for them. Other than that, honestly, I love these CD's." "The CDs are a great way to learn. I don't think they would work for all classes, but I see many classes that would most certainly benefit from these tools. I love being able to go quickly over the material that I understand and being able to go slowly on the parts that are a bit more difficult. It is like having a personal professor. I love it. I can say without exaggeration that I have learned more material in this class than any of my other courses here at BYU (with the only possible exception a really excellent B-O-M class). I have other professors in the business major that spend way too much time relating stories about past experiences and not covering pertinent course material. The CDs cut out any of this unuseful information and boil the subject down to its material (fancy that). I really enjoy the class presentations as well. They diversify the whole experience. You should be very thankful that you have Norm Nemrow working here. He has developed a great way to learn accounting." "First of all, I'm a student who wants to learn this material and I want a challenge. I really am interested in Accounting and other topics like statistics and economics. I hate hate hate hate (!!!!!!!!!!)how my other classes like Stat 221 and Econ 110 waste my time and bore me to death with lectures that cater to the 5 slowest people in the class, prepare no one for the tests, and make the text books look absolutely thrilling in comparison. The CDs are such a blessing. Anyone can use them to work at their own pace. Everyone learns and everyone is happy. I don't have to be dragged down by the slowest person in the class, and I don't have to drag down the smartest person in the class. This class is a challenge and thanks to Norm and the CDs I feel like the many hours I put into it are very productive. I wish I were attending BYU in the year 2010 when hopefully the majority of the professors here will wake up and put their courses on CD and on the Internet. I'm sure that this class gets plenty of opposition from the boring professors that some how think its unfair that we learn more in accounting than we do in their pathetic community-college-quality-ofinstruction courses. TWO THUMBS UP and FOUR STARS **** for the Cds!!!!!!!!!!!!" I personally like the current way of teaching Acct. 200. The CD's allow you to work at your own pace. For a busy college student it is refreshing to doing the quizzes at your own convenience. There is plenty of help available if you need further assistance. I am a man of many schedules and the chance to work at my speed and in my own time is great! I feel that the course is challenging and gives a better understanding of the basic language of Accounting or business. I support the idea 100% and think Norm does a good job explaining it on the CD's. One more thing. No matter how hard a professor tries he cannot make students learn from the textbook. The CDs take the place of a textbook. Norm has effectively made it impossible to skip out on learning because the CD lectures are as in depth as the text. It is wonderful. Take the hint--this is a good idea. "As someone who isn't doing very well in this class, it would be very easy for me to give a lot of negative commentary on this class. However, I have realized that this class has taught me more about self-discipline than any course I have previously taken. Any student would benefit from taking this class in learning about personal financing, regardless of their major or career goals." "I am a senior majoring in Electrical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics and Japanese. I am taking Accounting 200 this semester because I have decided to pursue an MBA after graduation. I love Norm's 'non-traditional' format that he has developed for this course. I personally think that all GE classes would benefit from following a similar format. I think that the CD lesson format is by far the most efficient and productive way to teach a GE class, and my reasoning is the following: 1) Because of the large enrollment, it is impossible for the instructor to teach at a level that will satisfy all of the students. The natural ability and study habits of such a large number of students varies too much to do so. Most other GE classes bore me to sleep. 2) I am free to study at my own pace with complete flexibility for my schedule. I am free to move on when I feel like I adequately understand a concept. If I choose I can listen to the lecture repeatedly until I am confident that I have mastered the material. 3) The required classes focus on applying the lessons to real life. Class time is not spent reviewing or lecturing lesson material. Leaning facts without learning how they apply doesn't have much worth, in my opinion. 4) Students are given the direct responsibility to listen to the lessons, take the quizzes, etc. As for a textbook, I would ask how many students actually read the textbook in other GE classes. I would submit that only a minority of students take the time to read through the textbook chapter by chapter. Based on my experiences as a student, most students rely on the professor to give them all of the relevant information during the lecture and only skim through the textbook or chapter summaries before taking a test. If students don't read through the textbook anyway, a traditional lecture setting would not be able to incorporate the distinctive advantages of Norm's CD approach. " "I believe the lecture CD's are just as helpful, informative and directive as an actual lecture. It is refreshing to be able to have freedom (yet boundaries too with quiz deadlines, etc.) to determine the pace at which I want to learn the material. I also believe it is extremely helpful to be able to listen to someone explain a concept over and over to me when I do not understand it originally, something harder to come by in a 'traditional' lecture setting. I believe this non-traditional style of teaching is not only teaching just as effectively, but also making us as students more responsible and accountable for our education. Which I like and fully support for students in the future." Although I am must say Accounting is not really my subject I think the way Norm teaches it is much better then having to learn it all from a book. His CD's really explain the principles and the examples and walking through them with Norm are really helpful. If I was reading a book I would be much more likely to have my mind wonder off. He makes the material apply to us. Also the CD's are quite amusing! I also think the TA office is great. It gives you the opportunity to discuss problems you might be having on a much more individual level. "This is my second time in Acc 200. I first took the class from Bro. Nemrow three years ago as a freshman. At the time, the textbook was used for all lectures and homework. I consider the new course, including the use of CDs, class presentations, and course in general to be 100 times better. The CDs are extremely useful as a learning tool. If I don't understand a particular topic, I can go directly back and listen to it again. They are much more useful as a test review and I understand much more from them than I ever did reading the textbook. I consider the required classes to be some of the most practical lectures that I have attended here at BYU. It is time well spent and should continue to be included in the course. The homework is practical and related to the course material, and the quizzes are a fair measure of our knowledge. I actually spend much more study time with the CDs than I did with the traditional method. I feel that the time spent is higher quality and I retain much more as a result. I am in full support of this teaching method. I would even suggest that other courses, such as Statistics 221, incorporate the same idea." "The cd's are great--I like being able to watch the lessons whenever and wherever. Plus, if I don't understand I can view the lesson again. I hope all classes move to this kind of set-up. The class presentations are very informative. I've learned so much--truly this is my all-time favorite class! But it wouldn't be the same without Norm teaching. He has insight and I would have to classify him as one of my heroes." "I met the challenge of taking a hybrid course (CD/online) with some concerns. Now, having nearly completed the course, I feel it has provided a convenient way to work at my own pace through the materials. There is help available in the labs and the CD lessons are also very helpful. I will say that taking the course this way has still been very vigorous and challenging. Textbooks can be over-rated. The required classes have also been helpful in their own way. For example, today was the first day I ever heard a professor discuss God in the classroom in the context of future career opportunities (I'm from a state school). I found it applicable. I have two negative comments: first, Norm Nemrow may be short-changing students with only eight required classes. The CDs are great, but I enjoy his lectures and tend to retain a lot more (especially during five hour review sessions) when he teaches in person. The second comment is this: rather than replicate each slide in the CD packet, adding some additional text and reference materials (along with the slides) would be extremely helpful." I love the class on CDs. It allows me to be able to have the ability to be flexible with when and where I take my class. I feel that it is the wave of the future and that it has greatly helped me to learn the course. I think that the point of college courses is to learn the material and if one way is a little easier to learn the same amount of information than another way than the more effective way is better. I think the required classes are important for my learning and enjoy them thoroughly. "As a manufacturing engineering major at BYU and having received multiple university scholarships, I would like to note that innovation usually follows a different path to discovery than traditional practices. As engineers we are taught to think outside the box, examine problems in a way and then devise a new method of accomplishing a task more effectively and with less resources. This is exactly what brother Nemrow's course does. It accomplishes the goal of teaching Accounting 200 in a more effective way with fewer resources. It permits each student to learn at his or her own rate while simultaneously providing a student support structure capable enough to respond to additional student questions. "This class is great!!! Through its format I think I've done more 'true learning' than in any other class I've take here at the university. It's clear, user-friendly, and really tailors to individual needs. The required classes are also good supplements to the required learning material. They give the students brief views of various aspects of the accounting world and business in general, adding in spiritual insights where appropriate. I wish more courses would utilize this great teaching/learning method." "This class is amazing. It is BY FAR, the most educational class and learning experience I have had during my college, high school, jr high school career. The CD's are so much more thorough and less prone to error than a regular lecture. Plus, I can pause when I'm sleepy, and skip when I don't need to relearn something. The required classes are important to LIFE, unlike most of the things that I learn in my other classes. Norm has found a way to make me understand where accounting fits into my life and how I can take what I have learned in his class and apply it to my life. THIS IS THE BEST COURSE I HAVE EVER HAD!" I think that the cds are a dang skippy idea. I wish more classes were like this one. I wish all my classes were more like Acc 200 - I have learned more in this class than most of my other classes this semester. The fact that we don't have to buy a textbook doesn't impact the quality of education all of my other classes made me buy textbooks that I only use to do the homework and study for tests. I love listening to the CD's because I can do it anywhere and anytime. I like the fact that I can rewind and listen to something I missed. I have enjoyed each of the required classes and have taken something away from each. "The cds are really great. It makes it easier to learn the material and one can go at their own speed. It also makes it easier to review for a test or quiz. The information is right there. One can go at its own pace, in order to learn the material. The required classes are great to because they provide a look at the real world and industry of accounting. Norm does a great job." "The cd's are good and I believe they are a worthwhile teaching tool, but I learn better in a real class situation. I think that many people do very well and learn a lot from the cds but it's not my learning style. However, you cant please everyone all of the time. Overall, I think the cd's are fine. " "I find the CD's VERY difficult to sit through. I have bought the book because I dislike them so much. I like only going to class 8 times a semester, but honestly, I think I would learn more from a traditional class of reading a text book and hearing a lecture about what it is I'm reading. " I love this course. I love the idea that I have all the course material in my possession and can watch the CD's anytime I would like. It has definitely been one of my more enjoyable college courses. "I can honestly say I learn more from these CDs than I would from any textbook.” I love the CD's! This class has by far been the most instructive class I have taken at BYU. It has been so much easier to learn from the CD's and the homework examples. For me it is much easier to concentrate compared to a classroom setting. I can honestly say that I have learned more in Acc. 200 from the CD's than from any other method of learning. It is the best way to teach the acc. material! "I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and have come to have a real appreciation and understanding for the principles of accounting and business. I also feel that the method of teaching is VERY effective. The CD's allow a student to re-listen to a concept as much is necessary to make that concept understood. Nemrow's explanations are also such that the material is easily understood, while at the same time much material can be covered quickly. In short I feel I learn more, learn quicker, retain more and learn in a way that is generally more effective than almost any other class I have taken. The required classes also help those going into business to get a very good overview of the field. This course and its' organization I believe will set the trend for what future education will and should be." "Acc 200 is one of the best classes I have had. Not only is the material good but also the teacher is amazing. Professor Nemrow is so excited about teaching the material and getting us excited also. I think more classes should be done through the computer and CD's. Not only do I get to learn the material whenever I am ready but I get to hear the lecture as many times as I want. I don’t have to worry about missing information or concepts that I may in class. The quizzes are good motivation to keep me on top of things and also test and let me know how I am doing, helping me know what I need to learn better. The required classes are also beneficial and effective. They give me a chance to see the professor and know more about the actual world of accounting. I don’t have very much to say that is negative about the class. Although it is a different way of teaching and I have never experienced it before it has proven to be very successful and effective for me." I believe that the CD's are the best way to teach this accounting class. It gives you a visual how things are working instead of reading it in a boring book and trying to figure it out on your own. The CD's are the best possible way to do this. "In all honesty I have to say that I really do not get this accounting stuff, but I know I probably wouldn't get it either way if I was watching cd's or sitting in a class room listening to a teacher. I love the cd's. I feel that I am able to learn at my own pace and to really feel like Professor Nemrow is talking and teaching just to me. I feel that I learn better with the cd's than I would if I just went to a class twice a week. Frankly I think more classes need to be taught this way. This is a great way of teaching." "Acc 200 has been one of the best classes I've taken at BYU. I really like the way the class is set up. The CD's are great, they present the material in an easy to understand way. I like the fact that if I miss something, or don't quite understand a topic I can just listen to that part over again. I also really like the homework problems and walk throughs at the end of each lesson. At first I was skeptical about the CDs but using them has changed my mind. I think the way Acc 200 is set up is effective and efficient. " "I find the CDs a very effective and quite enriching way to learn Accounting. I can learn on my own time and make the learning fit to my schedule better than a regularly scheduled class. Furthermore, the information in the lessons is available to me anytime and as many times as I need it. Also, I like that I can speed up or slow down Norm. This helps me intake the material at the rate best for me. Overall, my favorite part about Accounting 200 is that the CD learning style works so well for every individual regardless of his or her schedule." "I think they are much more convenient and enable me to learn at a pace that I think is necessary, and it also allows me to spend time/no time on certain concepts that I don't know/think are easy. I have learned a lot from the required classes, but no different than if they had been on cd's. I think it is a wonderful advancement in applying technology to learning and only imagine it will move further in the future." "In response to Norm's 'non-traditional' approach to Accounting 200, I would begin by saying that I have learned skills in this class that will actually be useful in my life. A college educational experience lies in what the student put in to it. Whether one reads a textbook, goes to a lecture, or watches a CD makes little difference if his/her effort is minimal. The use of CD lessons in Accounting 200 has given me freedom to be more flexible with my study, but has also taught me discipline. If a student doesn't have the discipline to stay on track with this 'non-traditional' approach, then the probably lack the discipline to get the best out of a college experience. The class presentations a very valuable because the lessons come from people who are experts on the topic. Norm's classes are exciting, and educational. We are quizzed on everything we learn. I feel that I have gotten much more out of this class than Accounting fundamentals. From Norm's example, class presentations, and CD lessons I have learned valuable lessons on integrity, business fundamentals, and financial skills." "The CDs provide adequate coverage for an introduction accounting class with extra detailed information for the use of a student at their own discretion. If something is not clear to a student, TAs and the professor are readily available and willing to provide extra information for a student's understanding. The class presentations helps to incorporate accounting principles to real life and makes the introductory course tangible instead of memorizing definitions and rules." " When I first started the class I thought the CDs wouldn't be very effective because, depending on the subject, I normally don't instantly understand the material taught by my teacher. The CDs allow us students to walk through the lectures at our own pace, pausing, skipping, and stopping the lecture at our discretion. I know there are many times I have sat in a classroom totally missing everything the teacher has said, but because of the lack of time and the size of the class, was unable to stop the flow of the lecture to clarify the points I missed. I think Norm is a little wordy a lot of the time, but the enounce software allows you to fly through all the fluff Norm throws at you. The CDs have everything that you need to learn the material." "The CD approach used for this course is a nice change from the standard textbook approach that most courses use. The CDs put more of the responsibility on the student for learning the material in the ACC 200 course. So, if a student doesn't have the drive or discipline to review the CD lessons and practice the various problems accordingly, then they will not learn the material well. At times I feel that it would be better to have a textbook to look at and learn from, it takes some getting used to utilize the CDs appropriately. Considering I've never taken an accounting course with a textbook, I wouldn't have much to compare it to." I really think that I have never gotten so much out of a class. To me the CD's are like having a personal tutor. "I liked the CDs very much, I felt I learned just as much as I have in other traditional lectures, the required classes were great, and it gave an opportunity to apply our knowledge to real life. I thought the accounting 200 course was an exceptional course and I learned a great deal about accounting from it. I wouldn't change a thing." "I really loved the cd lessons. They helped me because I could go back and review the lectures, and I could also go as fast or slow as I wanted. The required classes were also helpful because if helped me to see how the things we were learning could be applied. " "Accounting 200 by Norm Nemrow is honestly one of the best classes I have ever taken. Not only is he a great teacher, but also the way he presents the material through the CD's is genius. No, it's not easier or less time consuming than a text book course, but yes, it is much more interesting and educational. I wish more courses at BYU offered such an approach to teaching." "My first reaction to the CDs was one of excitement. I thought that learning at my own pace would be wonderful. Now, after a few months of this approach, I wish more than anything that I was enrolled in a 'conventional' accounting course. I need to be taught by a teacher - someone who can gauge my performance and ability. I need to be able to ask my questions, instead of wondering if I have any questions. I need the interaction with other students that takes place during class time. I need the teacher to assume responsibility for teaching the material. As for the class presentations - I always find them valuable and interesting; however, it would be more beneficial to me if class lectures focused more on the CDs, and relating that information. Additionally, I believe that students need to be given a choice of whether or not they want to take the course via CD, or whether they would prefer to take a conventional accounting class. If this class is going to remain a pre-requisite for the Business major, as well as a requirement for several other majors, it needs to be designed for academic success - the first time. It always amazes me when professors tell you that you can re-take the course. Isn't it more beneficial to take a class once, and feel like you accomplished something and were rewarded for you hard work and effort? The course material is well thought out, but perhaps the teaching approach needs to be reviewed for those of us who are still traditional - even in 2002." I love the class. I really enjoy the Cd's because we can learn from a person instead of a book. I also really like the idea of the CD's because we are able to listen to the lectures as many times as we need to. This enables one to completely understand the subject matter. I love this class and am able to do well and put in the extra effort when needed. "I greatly enjoyed the CD's. In most cases, I would consider them more valuable than going to lectures or reading a textbook. They enable the teacher and student to interact on a one-on-one basis. The student is able to speed up the speaker to save valuable time, and also to replay parts that were particularly hard to understand. Also, all visual aids used on the CD's are available in print form. This allows for no question as to what is important to learn an presents that information in a summarized manner rather than having to weed through, frankly, dull and boring accounting texts to highlight main points. All in all, the course presented was excellent and made accounting and the language of business easy to understand." "I love the class structure. I can study at my own pace, with deadlines, at the times I want to, and review any tough material in the lectures. The class lectures are great because we hear from other faculty and professionals not just the same boring teacher over and over. I wish more professors were as forward thinking as Master Nemrow is with this course. I learn more and in a manner more suitable to my learning capabilities with the CD-Roms than I ever would in a traditional classroom. The mandatory quizzes after the lessons also provide reason to pay attention and learn while viewing the CD-Roms.” "The Acc 200 class c.d.'s are indeed a very unique and different approach to teaching. I in no way have felt cheated in my educational experience. The c.d.'s explain the concepts very well, and are very helpful in understanding such complex subjects. I don't feel they are any less effective as textbooks. I am more of a visual learner with motion. The c.d.'s are like a textbook in motion and with sound. It almost makes accounting fun! This is a generation that has grown up with television and broadcasting as a very integral part of life. These c.d.'s in turn go along with what this generation is comfortable with. Does that make sense? I like how this course is based on your own schedule. Obviously we don't meet as a class every day, but it is clear that there is much help available if it is needed--through the lab and Norm's office hours. I have enjoyed this different kind of a class and I would not be surprised if more classes start using c.d. lessons. It would cut down on costs. There you have it." "Accounting 200 is one of the best classes I have taken so far at BYU. The CDs are informative, helpful, cater to individual schedules which is a definite plus in a college student's chaotic life. I prefer the CDs to the regular class experience, because they still teach all of the information that is necessary, they can be replayed and the explanation can be heard again, which cannot be done in the traditional classroom. Also, with the scheduling of the CDs, I feel that they almost provide more of a college experience, because it is completely up to each individual student to complete the assignments, and thus it teaches more responsibility than most of the traditionally taught classes. The class presentations are applicable to life and provide helpful suggestions to students who desire to head into the business or accounting worlds. Often, professors do not apply their knowledge to every day life, or provide suggestions for the students for their futures. Thus I highly enjoy the class presentations because they are applicable to life, instead of just providing extra clutter. Accounting 200 is interesting, useful, and well taught. Norm Nemrow is an amazing teacher who is fired up about accounting, and as a result, his students get enthused. All in all, I think this is a great way for the course to be taught." I feel that the CD's are great overall. They take time to go through them all but they allow students to work at their own levels. I have loved having the opportunity to go back a minute and listen to material I zoned out on. The class presentations are great as well. I think Norm works hard and sincerely strives to get this material across to his students in the best way possible. My only suggestion would be to require a little less. This is the most time intensive course I have ever taken. "I absolutely love the accounting CDs! I believe it to be the most effective teaching tool I have ever seen for a university lecture class. Having access at any time to the teacher's actual lecture is priceless! It is much more entertaining and involved than textbook reading, which causes nothing but sleepiness. The required lectures have been monumental in not only my college experience but also my life. They have taught such important concepts that have altered the way I make decisions for the better." "I love the CDs. I am learning more in Acc. 200 than all of my other classes combined, and I feel that this is largely due to the fact that I can learn at my own pace. I love not having to deal with a textbook, and I feel that the CD method is a very efficient and effective teaching method. Norm is the man." "I love the CDs. It allows me to listen and learn when I have the time, when I can actually devote the needed attention to them and to really focus, and I can go at my own pace. I can pause and listen to something over again if needed and I don't have to frantically attempt to take notes. They are a great way to learn and really enhance the class. " "I really enjoy Accounting 200. Norm Nemrow does a great job in explaining the concepts that need to be covered in this course. The CDs are great, I really enjoy the fact that I can go as fast as I want to, and that if I don't understand I can listen and view the CD again. Textbooks are good in certain classes, but most of the time I don't read my textbooks. I feel that I have learned more by this interactive learning strategy than by reading a textbook. The required classes are great. The classes cover what I (and fellow students) want to know about a career in Accounting and the Business world. Professor Nemrow also provides us with enough resources and help so that if we need his attention it is easily available. This course has been well designed. I feel that this is probably one of the few courses at BYU that I have thoroughly enjoyed. " I have had a great experience with Acc 200. I like being able to do it at my own pace and I feel that Norm's explanations on the CD are great. I have learned a lot and I think it is a great course. I think the cd's are excellent and actually do alot better job of teaching the material than a book could. The class presentations are very helpful because they concentrate on current information and are applicable. Norm's way of teaching is great and really works. "I think this class has been very good. For being an introductory course for accounting, it has helped me to understand the basic language of business. The CDs are great because I can review all the things I need to and get an adequate explanation of things. Norm has also made himself available for any additional help and questioning. AS far as the 8 required classes, they have been awesome. They have answered so many questions that I have had about finances and careers that I really didn't know before where to go to get the answers. I have thoroughly enjoyed the class." "I think the CD's are the best learning tool ever. I guarantee I'm doing much better in the class because of them. They're great because it becomes an individual learning experience. If I don't have questions, I don't have to listen to the teacher explain concepts I already understand. If I don't understand, I can listen to that part over again to pick up the things I missed the first time, you never get that chance in a class the size of our accounting class. Norm gets to cover everything every lecture. We never get behind. I understand much better than if I were to read a book. The class presentations are very beneficial. I don't think we would have the time to discuss all of those issues if the class were taught traditionally. The course content it much to heavy and difficult to explain. With the CD's we get to take the teacher home with us, everything I wish I could do in all my other classes. They are the best learning tool I've ever had." "The CD format is actually very effective. I can't say that I enjoy it, because they are very time consuming and challenging. However, I think they are very valuable because I have the opportunity to listen at my own pace, and either skip over things or listen repeatedly to certain things, depending on my individual level of understanding. I would say that I learn much more from watching the CD's that I do in other classes from reading a book. I strongly support the CD format of Accounting 200." "I strongly support the use of CDs to teach Acc 200. I actually took this same course in Virginia, but had to take it again because BYU wouldn't accept it. I have found that the information is easier to understand from the CDs than from the textbook I used last year. In Virginia I had the benefit of being in a class of 10 people. For the large class sizes at BYU, the CDs are much more practical. In fact, I would recommend the use of CDs to teach other large introductory courses. I enjoy being able to choose when I will complete the lessons and quizzes. The deadlines for quizzes ensure that students don't fall behind. The required class readings are very interesting. I usually don't have time to sit down and read articles from the Wall Street Journal and other similar publications, so I really appreciate that we are required to read applicable articles from those sources. I also think that Prof. Nemrow's excitement, humor, and enthusiasm about the subject matter enhance the student's learning experience. In all honesty, I haven't particularly enjoyed the class presentations; however, I know that many students do. Part of the reason why I haven't really liked them is that they last for approx. 1 1/2 hours, which tends to drag on a little longer than I would like. I would definitely struggle to pay attention if I had to attend 1 1/2 hour ACC 200 lectures twice a week; especially since I have already taken the course and the material isn't new to me. Thus, the ability to watch the CDs at my leisure and to speed up how fast Prof. Nemrow talks truly makes the lessons more enjoyable. I have learned a great deal in this course. When I took ACC 200 last time, there were a few areas that I wasn't completely confident in. I now feel more confident in those areas, not just because I re-learned them, but also because I was taught in a way that made the subject matter more clear and understandable. I was actually surprised that the exams weren't as long or as difficult as the exams from my previous ACC class. The review sheets are helpful; however, the exam review sessions are much too long. I appreciate that Prof. Nemrow makes the exam review sheets available so that we can work through the problems on our own and then check our answers in the T.A. lab. I applaud Prof. Nemrow's teaching style and would strongly recommend this course to others." "I was a bit skeptical about the cds at first because I've had bad experiences before in other classes. To my surprise though, I've got nothing but good things to say about them. I like the fact that I can go over the parts of the lecture as many times as I wish to the part of lesson I'm having difficulty in. I love the whole setup of the class. It is very structured and organized. I have only myself to blame for my poor grades. " "This is the best class I have ever taken. The format allows for students to learn at their own pace, to repeat ideas with which they struggle as many times as needed, to take lectures when they feel they are best able to digest them (rigid class schedules can make students very tired at certain times) and also work in a comfortable environment for as long as is needed." "I think the way Professor Nemrow has structured this course, especially the Cd's, is a great way to present a general course such as Acc 200. I have found that the Cd's are just as comprehensive as a traditional textbook and lecture. They are also more interactive and make good use of the technology that is available. The required classes take the course material and apply it to real life situations. I would encourage more general education courses to follow this format, because it is an excellent way of improving education with modern technology and techniques." "I think I have learned more in this class than all the others combined. Anything we haven't learned, we can repeat as many times as is needed until we do learn it. His method of teaching the class is inspired - I will be surprised if all the classes, to which it is applicable, do not adopt the same style of teaching within the next decade. YOU CANNOT FAULT IT! " The CDs along with the eight required classes have been wonderful. I have been able to take my time to learn the material to the speed that I need to learn it. It also saves me time from having to listen to questions explained that I already know the answers too... and it has helped me review questions that I need to work on in my own time. Accounting 200 is one of my favorite courses that I have taken here at BYU. I love the CD's. It is so nice to schedule lectures when I am ready to take them. They are also very helpful because before I take a test I can go back to the parts I've forgotten or need extra help on and refresh my memory. In regular lectures things may be missed or your mind may wander. With the cd's you can go back as many times as it takes to truly understand the material. The class presentations have been wonderful in my opinion. I really enjoy them and have learned quite a lot. I feel that the CD lessons are a very effective way of teaching accounting. The required classes are great and the whole course all around is a positive learning experience. "The way that Professor Nemrow has the Accounting 200 course set up is the most effective and efficient way of learning the basic accounting principles and the language of business. The benefits of the CDs are many. I can learn at my own rate. If I suddenly notice that I haven't been paying attention for a few minutes, I can simply go back five minutes in the CD and learn what I would've missed had I been sitting in an uncomfortable lecture hall. I learn better by repetition, and the CDs allow me to go over lessons as many times as I need to learn the material. If I have questions, there is a textbook available. Nobody ever told me that I couldn't read the textbook. I can also go and personally talk with Professor Nemrow. There are also a number of TAs I can go to for assistance. This saves time because other people have different questions than I do, and I don't have to sit through class while the professor is addressing their questions. The CDs allow each student to learn the way that they learn best. All methods of learning are available. This allows students to actually learn, which is what is important." "I believe that the most efficient and effective methods of teaching should be used at all levels of education, whether they be conventional or not. I have had many classes where I have read hundreds and even thousands of pages, yet have not learned much. The teacher was ineffective, or the text was confusing. The C.ds that norm has us listen to are effective and are wonderful teaching tools. 'Seeing' the text, and being able to do it in an advanced way is helpful and helps one to learn it better. The cds are a wonderful thing we have to learn, and I recommend using them to teach all acct. 200 classes everywhere. To change from the cd's to reading a text for supposed tradition is ludicrous. Think outside the box! Don't do something because it has always been done that way, do it because it is better. The cd's are better. A concerned student, Mike Barens" "I have really enjoyed the CD's that Professor Norm Nemrow has provided for his Acc. 200 class. In this manner, if there is a subject that I am unsure on, I can very easily repeat the lesson. Plus, I can go at the rate that I want. He has set up a schedule that requires us to finish certain lessons on certain days, and I have found that quite helpful because it still helps me stay well-organized etc. Overall, I think his manner of teaching is a lot more affective then others. In the future, I have no doubt that 90% of the teaching will be done in this manner." "To whom it may concern, I am a student in Professor Nemrow's accounting 200 class. I have been very impressed with the way the technology and teaching method of this class. I feel that I have learned more with the CD's than I would be with the text or regular classes. The CDs make it so that I can learn on my own time and not when I feel like I have to go to class. Sometimes I am really tired and I am sure that I would fall asleep in class if I were to attend. When I am tired of watching the CDs, I can take a break and watch them later when I will be more focused. I have found a lot of useful information in this class that I feel that I have been able to apply to life. My dad is an accountant and I have been able to have conversations with him on topics that I have been learning in this accounting class.” I enjoy the CD course. One reason why is that it gives me an opportunity to become more disciplined. I choose when to do the lectures and am not required to go to a class at a certain time. It makes me be more responsible and allows me to even get ahead. The TA lab allows for sufficient one-on-one help along with Norm's office hours. I can go at my own pace and always go back and re-learn key concepts at will. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! I LOVE THOSE CD'S!! I feel that I am having a better learning experience in my accounting 200 class than in any of my other classes. The CD's are wonderful. I can learn at my own pace and it is like having a teacher right in front of me that can help me with any of the subject material with just a click of the button. I wish all my other classes were the same way. Norm rocks!! "I love this class. I find myself wishing that I had other classes presented in this same format. The CD lectures are an invaluable tool in helping me to learn this material. When I don't understand something I can review it over and over again, unlike a live lecture where if you miss out... you miss out. I love the reinforcement I get from doing the homework problems and taking the quizzes. I love that I can watch the lectures on my own time and at my own pace. There is lots of room for flexibility. Sometimes there are annoying technology problems, but that's to be expected when this kind of course presentation is used. In time more development will help to overcome the little technical problems. I love this class. I think everyone at BYU should take Accounting 200 just to gain some basic business knowledge. Plus, Norm is the BOMB. You can tell he really has a passion about teaching and he does a fantastic job with this course. The required lectures are great. I look forward to every one. The things I'm learning in this class are so applicable, useful and practical. I hope more classes take on this CD format." "I DON'T CARE MUCH FOR ACCOUNTING, BUT I LOVE NORM'S CLASS AND SETUP " I REALLY LIKED THE CLASS THE REQUIRED CLASSES ARE VERY UPLIFTING I THINK THAT THE PROGRAM IS INOVATIVE AND LEADING THE WAY INTO A TECHNOLOGICAL SOCIETY. I WISH ALL MY TEACHERS PUT AS MUCH WORK INTO THEIR LESSONS. I think that the CD's are excellent and much more effective than a traditional class. I took them home to Oklahoma with me over the break and showed them to my sister who is an accounting major at OU. She thought they were excellent and asked if the CD's were available for other accounting classes because she wanted them. The explanations are good and you can listen to them as many times as you want to. I also like our special topic required classes. It's good interaction with Norm and insightful material. "Norm is a genius. That alone should suffice, but just so you know, I took Accounting 200 as a freshman with Dr. Stice and got a C+ out of the class. I honestly struggled to even get that grade and after finishing the class still had essentially no idea how to make debits equal credits. I understood very little of what Accounting is all about. Now, taking accounting with Norm has been a whole new experience. Not only is the guy intelligent, charismatic and fun to learn from but he's gone one step further and explained everything so much more clearly, making it WAY easier for students to learn how do this stuff. Just for your info, on the two tests I've taken so far this semester I've scored a 97% and a 95%. Something I never would have dreamed of doing in Dr. Stice's class a few years ago. Also, out of the 19 quizzes I've taken, I've scored 5/5 on 13 of them, 4/5 on 3 of them and 3/5 on 3 of them. I know the improvement in grade is no coincidence. The mere fact that the CD's can be watched over and over again if something just isn't clicking, or sped up to not use as much time learning less difficult aspects of accounting is pure genius. I know for a fact that the CD's have helped me get a handle on accounting this time around and I am very appreciative of Bro. Nemrow for not only being more efficient in teaching this course, but for instilling in me a desire to pursue accounting as a major. I hadn't made up my mind until his course. He's an incredible man. As far as his 8 required classes go, I wouldn't miss one. This has been my favorite class all semester and I've enjoyed the fact that I can do my accounting homework and quizzes at my own discretion and still get what I deserve out of the class." "I find that even though I spend more time on this class than any other....I don’t really remember anything I learn and no matter how much time I spend on the damn exams, I still manage to fail them, which has never happened in my 24 years on this planet. So my reaction is that this course does have major problems and the cd lesson really piss me off. A textbook would definitely provide a more wholesome learning experience. Thanks." "I get a lot more out of using the CD's than I ever would in a class. I don't get frustrated by slower students who have the teacher slow down and I don't get frustrated by getting lost in class because the teacher is going too fast and I don't want to stop class just so I can understand it. The course is set up in such a way to keep me on schedule and I really have learned so much, and I really understand it. I haven't just memorized things. The classes he does have us come to are the ones that we couldn't benefit as much if it was on a CD. The way he has it set up accommodates for every level of learning. I love the class. The pacing is wonderful, Bro. Nemrow is such a great guy and I feel like I could go talk to him if I ever needed to. Between the CD's and the required classes, I am getting a great exposure to accounting and business in general." As I have taken Accounting 200 on the CD's I have enjoyed and found that I have been able to learn more efficiently than I do with textbooks. I find that being able to go back over the lecture at my will is very helpful in covering the material. It is also nice having the walk through on each problem to show you what you are doing right or what you are doing wrong. I know that my achievements would not be has great without the CD's and only a textbook. "I was blown away the first day of class when I found out that the average number of people who are majoring in accounting triples after taking Norm's class. I knew at that moment that there was something about this class that was different and better than an average class. I later found out what it was. Besides the fact that Norm is an amazing teacher, I think that the CD's are an integral part to the success of the class, success that couldn't be achieved without them. The CD's provide the convenience of being able to listen to the lectures when I have the time. They also allow me to listen to the lecture when I am ready to go over the material, and not when I am too tired to listen to an in-class lecture. That is a big help. But even more then that the CD's provide something that a class lecture couldn't. It allows me to review material, as many times as I want to ensure I understand it. It allows me to go through material I already understand more rapidly. In addition to this, I have found that the visuals on the CD's make it a lot easier for me to understand the material." "I have found the CDs to be just as effective, if not more so, than traditional class formats. First, the CDs allow me to re-watch portions that I may not understand as well the first time through. Also, I have found that being able to pause the CDs to take short breaks allow me to focus more when I return to them. Finally, they allow me to be more flexible in terms of when (and where) I watch them. The required classes offer a real-world perspective on the topics discussed in the CDs and I enjoy attending those aside from the fact that they are required." "I very much enjoy being in my home environment, studying the CD's for the Accounting 200 class. The homework problems are challenging and the online lectures stimulating. The 6 classes we have attended so far have been outstanding and I really appreciate the expert advice that has been brought in as guest instructors. The CD's are great - keep working with the Enounce software so students may take it at their own pace." "I have really enjoyed the class, I feel like Dr. Nemrow has set this up in a way to be really effective for his students. The class is quite hard in that it requires constant attendance but that is good. The option of textbooks isn't a very good one in my mind. The way it is set up now is very effective and interactive sometimes textbooks are such a waste of money. These cd's were very inexpensive and I use them all of the time." "Hello, my name is Ryan Davis, and I currently enjoy using the CD's in Professor Norm Nemrow's Acc 200 class. I feel that it is a unique and brilliant way to learn Accounting, which is a challenging subject. The lessons are thorough, comprehensive, and very useful. For example, the program is designed to be able to learn at the pace comfortable for the student. If a topic is particularly challenging, a student may stop the lecture and continue after pondering the concepts. Also, one may review and hear an entire lecture over again to fully grasp certain meanings. I have learned so much in so short of time. The class presents materials for a 400 level college course, and yet it is a '300 level' course. The classes that we do attend are solidifying to the concepts learned through the CD's and applicable to the world around us. Professor Nemrow also supplies us with supplemental materials, such as current Wall Street Journal articles that I first thought would be difficult to comprehend. However, I understand the terms used because of the thoroughness of the lessons. Professor Nemrow presents the material clearly with excellent examples too. BYU offers excellent resources to run the CD's and complete the assignments in the many computer labs across campus. I don't have a personal CD-ROM drive on my computer at home, but this doesn't create any difficulties when I need to complete my assignments. The 'Enounce' software available as well increases the speed at which I can listen to the lessons. I'm becoming more familiar with computers and feel this is important. Overall, this experience is unique and effective and I hope other students may discover this class. Understanding the principles and basics of accounting are key to better financial stability in a home or business. I think it should be part of the required curriculum at BYU. " "I feel that the C.Ds are great and very interactive in that you pause, rewind, and relearn a concept. I know after talking to recruiters from Duke, Stanford and Chicago that all the Deans of the business schools at these universities are looking into this type of technology to keep themselves cutting edge with the gen X and Y students that will be coming in as well as the technology that is driving business in the real world ie. board meetings through chat rooms v.s traditional ones location based. The technology that is in the Accounting class that Norm teaches will be used, and is already being embraced by many book publishers, in my Econ class when we bought our book it came with an interactive C.D which had practice test, graphs, links to Econ related websites. It was a better learning experience to be able to use more than one of my senses to study. The Accounting 200 C.Ds have done the same thing. I am sure that the big book publishers have seen the writing on the wall with having CDs instead of books, because as far as producing C.Ds it is more cost effective and popular among students, which translate to bigger revenues and low COGs. As usual, Utah is not known to be the early adopters of technology and has a reputation as being the trend follower and not the leader. In conclusion I want to say that one of the exciting things about Marriott Business School is that you have a teacher who is willing to be cutting edge. I transferred here from the Bay Area in California and if Cal or Stanford could see these CDs they would be very excited. I just hope in our pursuit of hanging on to tradition that we don't loose sight of our quest for better ways in reaching students who are excited about technology and embrace it fully and we find out one day that Texas A&M or Stanford who are in regions of technology get the fame for adopting this teaching style and we who are known as a tech region ie. Word Perfect/Novell have to play follow the leader again..." "I like the CDs. You can pause them. You can rewind them. You can make them go faster. That means you can make the teacher go faster or slower or pause them. It is my own little professor. I have learned a lot from the CDs. And the required classes are a very appropriate supplement to the learning from the CDs. I think I will learn a lot more from this course by the current method than by a regular professor speaking as you scurry to take notes (in the CDs, the notes are typed out as he speaks) and then try to cram in all the relevant material from a dry and dull text book the day before a test. Go Norm" "I've thoroughly enjoyed Accounting 200. I've learned a great deal about the practice of accounting. It has helped me better understand the world around me. I thought the CD's were very well done. They have been well paced, informative, and relevant to the tested material and to the objectives of the course. The required classes have been applicable to every day life and to the business world. As an introductory class, I couldn't imagine a better format. It has excited me about the world of accounting and changed my otherwise negative perceptions. I talked to many students who have taken the course previously who have mentioned that it has been one of the best courses they have taken. The guest lecturers are great; Professor Nemrow's style of teaching is effective and informative. I would recommend accounting 200 to anybody." "Norm's cd's are extremely well done--he teaches the material very well on them and in my opinion, it's nice to have the option of watching them whenever I can make the time. For me, I sometimes have to hear a certain concept 2 or 3 times to completely grasp it, and it's possible to do that with the lessons on cd, whereas it wouldn't necessarily be so in a huge class. I enjoy the required classes we have-I think there is a lot of useful information presented to them. I definitely don't have any problems with how this class is set up and I think considering the nature of the class material and the size of the class, this set up is not only adequate but also preferable. Norm's great." "Using the CDs and attending the 8 required lectures is a lot of work. I think I have gained a greater understanding of accounting through the cd/required lecture approach than I would have gained through a standard classroom approach. Times, they are a changing and educational institutions need to keep up. I think it is great that Norm has stayed a step ahead of the game. I think he should be praised for his innovations. I like the approach. " "It's easier to learn with the CDs, if you don't understand something, you can come back, and it's easier to take notes. I think the CDs cover well all the material we need to learn. In my personal experience, I learn better with the CDs than with lectures." "The CD's allow me to learn certain concepts at my own pace. They are an excellent substitute for a textbook - if you don't understand a concept you can just listen to specific concepts again. They are slightly lengthy, though. If there was a BRIEF conclusion at the end of each lesson it might facilitate learning for those who can pick up the concepts quicker. Overall I enjoy the CD's. " "The cd's have been an amazing learning tool for me. The length of each lesson is far longer than any normal three-credit class would require you to be in class. That means that we can learn twice as much from the lessons than we could in class. Plus we can watch it two or three times if we are having problems. No teacher has ever taught me a lecture two or three times because I was having problems. The enounce system is a great addition to the cds because it reduces the time required to learn the same thing. I have been at BYU for three years and this is by far the class that I have enjoyed most and that I have learned the most in. Professor Nemrow is an amazing teacher and his cd lessons are the wave of the future." "I have loved this course, the best part of the cd's is you can do it at your own speed. I never read my textbooks, so it is good to have everything taught so I actually learn the material rather than learn the test. Norm teaches in a manner that makes a dull subject interesting and unpainful. You can do the lectures as many times as you need to in order to learn everything, his examples are great, and the problems are very helpful. I have found the required classes incredibly insightful, and helpful too. Great class, and I wish more of my classes were formatted in the same manner with the cd sets." "I think that accounting 200 is probably one of the most useful classes that I have taken at BYU. I love the CD format because it allows me to view the lessons whenever I have the time for them. The CDs make it easier to learn because of their many interactive features. If I ever miss anything that is said in the lessons I always have the assurance that I can rewind to the appropriate place. If there is ever a problem that I can't solve O know that there are excellent walkthroughs I can rely on. I like the fact that we don't have to attend class because it saves me time. The 8 required classes that we have to attend during the semester are extremely interesting and pertinent to the subject we are studying. After taking this class I wish all other classes at BYU were taught with the same CD format. If this were the case, it would make life easier and I would learn more. " "I could not be happier with the CDs. I feel it is very convenient because I can watch them when it is most convenient to me. I have watched all of them and have learned a ton. I like the option to speed up the lessons and go through the easy parts much quicker. The quizzes and the problems at the end of each lesson are exactly what are discussed in the lessons. The exams are good and cover the topics from the lessons so you can watch the CDs as many times as you want and learn the material by heart, which is nice. Anyway, if all my classes were like this my life would be so much easier. Norm has put a lot of time in this and the glossary is also very nice. Anyway, it is much easier for me to learn this way as opposed to reading some boring and technical book with words that I don't even know how to pronounce. Anyway, I love this learning approach and so far accounting has been great, but I fear the 210 course is going to be much worse because of the way it will be taught with lectures and books and all that stuff from the old ages. Live in the now and let us use the great devices now available to us, not the boring books that have been used for over 2000 years." "I feel the CD lessons provide a great introduction to the concepts of accounting. I like them because you can review the material as much as you want, and it’s presented by an actual person, not text on a page. It's much more student-oriented, I feel. The required classes maybe could be a little more integrated into the rest of the course, but I feel the material that is covered is exceptionally useful for any business-prone student. The course has been one of my favorites at BYU. Norm is a great teacher and has a way of getting across tough concepts really well." This class is the best one I have had this year. Enough said. "I find the cds better than regular class learning. To be honest, a majority of professors are pretty dry when they teach. I often fall asleep. By having the class on cd, I can do it on my own time. If I need to take a nap first, I can. Not only that, I find the cd helps me learn better. It's more like a one-on-one tutor session than a giant classroom where I am one of 500. The cds enhance my learning experience much better than a book. " I have learned more in this class because of the CD's than I have in any other class. I would hope that all classes would go to this format. It gives us more freedom of when we can listen and also we can move forward if we want. Textbooks are just for cramming. I don't learn near as much and with the CD's it is more on a personal level. "The CD lessons have been great. I learn so much from them, and they make the class a lot more convenient. The only difference I have found with the CD's as opposed to lectures and a textbook is that I can do them on my own time, and I don't have to be inconvenienced with a strict schedule. I probably learn more with the CD's because I am able to go over them many times, and especially because there are explanations for the problems.” "Using the CD's is a great method for teaching the more difficult to comprehend subjects. When I don't understand something it is very easy to re-watch it and I can do that as many times as I need to. In a classroom setting it is not practical to ask the same questions repeatedly but with the CD's there is no problem. Plus with the TA labs and office hours available it is easy to get help when I require assistance on a more personal level. As far as the class presentations go, I really like only having to go to class a few times a semester. Because Norm only gets us eight times I am sure that there is a reason for going and that it will be worth my time to attend the class. Other frequent classes occasionally have no point in attending on some days. I personally am very impressed with the class set-up and wouldn't mind seeing it used for other classes. Coming into it I thought it would be horrible." "The CD's are like carrying your teacher around in your pocket. You can access him at anytime, you feel like you get to know him better and he is there to answer your questions, even at 1:00 in the morning. Frankly, the CD's make textbooks obsolete. I have enjoyed immensely the CD's and I feel they have been key in helping me understand very difficult material. The class presentations are an opportunity to expand my horizon and learn more about the accounting field from experts in it. Overall accounting 200 has been one of the most frustrating and challenging experiences for me at college. That may sound like a contradiction to what I just said but it is not. I am not a mathematician, frankly anything with numbers I don't understand and despise with a passion. This class has been very difficult for me, nevertheless the CD's are the only things that made it bearable, because I could take it slow and really learn the material. Without the CD's, I would not have learned nearly as much. As a side note, I have never understood the college mentality. What is the purpose of reading the assigned lecture only to have your professor regurgitate it all back to you the next day? It is a redundant waste of time, which is why half of the students don't read the text and those who do, don't attend class. The CD's finally combine your assigned reading with your class lecture. Finally, the planets have aligned and there is balance in the cosmos." "The course is a refreshing alternative to classes that are taught with little or no thought to how the students are responding to what is being taught. Brother Nemrow is effective in teaching accounting principles through the CDs required for the course. I learn just as much if not more than I would reading a textbook. It is like having every lecture recorded on a cassette only much much simpler." "The CD's are great. They allow for better time management. You know approximately how long it will take you to finish each lesson. They also allow for future review. In this way they are better than notes. The CD's are also far better than a book. Often books that deal with numbers lack sufficient explanations in words. The CDs explain the principals and give several examples. There are also homework problems included with each CD lecture that help to show if you've understood the material or not, and a quiz on each lecture provides motivation to learn the material well--now. The quizzes also give feedback as to how well we've really understood the material. " Professor Nemrow has devised a method of making the challenging content of this class attainable for everyone - as everyone can review concepts as many times as is needed. This class is my most challenging and the most well formatted of all my classes. I would be surprised if the majority of tertiary education does not follow this example in coming years. I think the cd's are great. that's a tony the tiger great... the course is good. "I feel very, very strongly that the CDs are an excellent learning tool. They are so much more effective in teaching that a traditional class lecture and textbook readings. The required classes are also excellent in that they help students see the real-life application of what they are learning on the CDs. This is an excellent course and I am 100% supportive of the way in which Norm has designed the course." "I enjoy this course. I am able to learn, understand, and use the material from the CD lessons. I enjoy the class presentations. We are able to use the class time to gain knowledge of the real world of accounting and business without taking away from the basic skills that we need to learn to understand accounting. I feel that I am receiving a more well rounded education with this system." This has been the best college course that I have taken. The CD's are more informative than any textbook would be. Norm makes it easy to understand the principles of accounting and he explains it three or four times throughout the CD lesson. Repetition is the only way that we can really learn something. Students never read textbooks. I have a 3.5 GPA and haven't read a textbook yet. The CD's are interactive so that if I didn't understand a subject I can go back and listen to it again. I also enjoy the 8 required classes because I know that it is going to be an interesting subject. Guest speakers with professional experience can teach me what to look forward to in the different fields of business management. This has been my favorite class at BYU. "The CDs provide me with flexible 'class times' and allow me to learn at my own pace. I like to go fast, so the CD works out well. The content of the CDs are excellent. Never have had a problem with them. The class is great. There is a bit of personal interaction with the professor, but that's to be expected and there are TA's in the lab. Accounting is one of my favorite subjects to learn." "I really love the way the accounting 200 class is set up using the cds. I feel like I learn the material better being able to listen to the lessons on my own time, at the speed I want. I can also go back and listen to a specific part to review or make things clear. I also like the fact that I can go ahead and do the quizzes before they are due to make the class work around my schedule. I only wish all of my classes were on cd like this one is." "I think it is a very effective way to learn. I don't learn well with textbooks, I do better with lecture type learning, with the cd's if I don't understand something the first time, I can go back and review it a second time, there are also notes with each lecture, that I can review, that pretty much cover everything anyways, almost as if it were a text book, I have learned tons in this class, and I love the set up" "I feel that the CDs are a good tool for learning the concepts in Accounting 200. The CDs provide the same learning experience that large auditorium based classes do--no personal interaction and an encouraged 'learn-on-your-own' sort of atmosphere. The ability to listen at a self-determined speed and to go back and replay the professor's words is unparalleled. There is good reason to think that perhaps the CDs provide a different learning experience than a traditional classroom setting. There is no doubt that the experience is different. Different doesn't always mean worse however; consider it innovation, on the plane with automobiles. Sure, automobiles are different than horses and buggies--they use up fossil fuels from the ground and pollute the air, but they are fast and efficient. Would you want to ride a horse and buggy to work everyday? Face it; Accounting 200 on CDs is different than Accounting 200 in a traditional classroom setting. The CDs are efficient and fast, and we can learn a self-determined pace, and like horses and buggies, traditional classrooms stink." "Accounting 200 has been a very enjoyable class for me. The cd's are very direct and useful in teaching students. The lectures are also very interesting - that give us examples of how what is taught is used in our everyday lives. This information is very useful, and cd's explain things in ways that no book could. I LOVE THE CD'S!!!!" I think the CD lessons are absolutely fabulous!!! I love this class and format which Norm has created. I feel that I have learned more through the CD's because I am able to rewind parts of the lesson I didn't understand... I love the CD's!!!!!!!!!! "I am junior. Meaning: I have taken many introductory classes from many different departments. To put it quickly, I wish all of them had CD lessons. Norm's class is great!” "To be frank, I could not have learned the material in this class if it were not for the CDs. Being able to listen to confusing sections over again was a real asset. In a lecture environment I spend all my time writing notes and I never can actually listen to the instructor. I can't imagine how bad I would have done in this class if it had not been for the CD lesson structure. I took this class because I felt like it was necessary stuff to understand in life- it was not required by my major or minor. I have learned a TON and I think it should be required of all university graduates!" I found the CD lessons very convenient and easy to understand. I could learn at my own pace and schedule. The CD's are prepared VERY well and are quite enjoyable. I have found it MUCH easier and efficient to learn accounting through this method. The required classes have also been very helpful. I especially enjoy how Professor Nemrow provides us with information about how to apply the accounting material we are learning in our lives. He provides us with extremely valuable information and is truly concerned for our future success and happiness. "The Cd's are great, I have been greatly benefited from the business knowledge learned in this class and in this format. We learn very detailed information in an understandable way and become 'fluent' in the language of business. Nathan W. Murphy" "Hello, The acc. 200 CD's are great! This course is excellent because you can work at your own pace, and if you need something repeated you don't have to ask. Just click. Along with lecture notes the courses ideas are presented clearly and I enjoy the class a lot. Thanks. Geoff Rowe" "I am actually retaking this course from Norm. I took this class two years ago when we used the book to further understand the lectures. I can tell you that the class now is far better than it was before. Norm's cd's explain in great detail and with great examples to assist in learning the principles. The book that was once required did the same, but was much more difficult to understand. Norm has a gift for explaining hard material in a way students can understand." This is the most innovative and exciting course I have ever had. I believe that Norm has successfully incorporated growing technology into a classroom environment. I think this class is the most worthwhile class I have ever had. "At first I really didn't like the system, especially because they took a while to set up on my computer at home, and the long lessons were required in order to do the quizzes. (which didn't even guarantee you'd get 100%) HOWEVER, now I see the value in the CD lessons. Every lesson is gone through in such detail, then the homework questions have a walk through, everyone can go at their own pace and learn the material thoroughly. There are so many resources to help any kind of student learn the material. With the T/A sessions and lab, the Exam review sessions, the speed control on computer, and glossary, it is just an amazingly organized class that beats any other system!" " Taking Accounting by cd-rom has been the greatest. It allows me to spend more time with the class when it is more convenient for me. I have a laptop and it has been nice to be able to work ahead when I have the time. My wife is due during finals, and I have the advantage of getting ahead in this class. I will be taking the final two weeks early, and wont have to worry about being interrupted or making my final up in the summer. I love having more control over my classes. If I don't understand something I don't miss a class and get behind. I have time to go get help from the great TA's and still stay on track." "I have absolutely LOVED my experience with Professor Nemrow's accounting 200 course this semester. I am a student who works hard to understand and get good grades, and I have been thankful for this teaching approach which has provided both the flexibility for me to study and repeat material and lectures until I comprehend in addition to live lectures that reinforce and offer exposure to business concepts and skills that lay ahead in my education. I am a huge fan of the method by which this course is being offered, and an even greater fan of the contagious spirit with which Norm Nemrow teaches his students of the rich mine of business knowledge that is inviting us each to come and dig. The course has been time-consuming -- I think the deadlines and system of submitting quizzes through Perception is an ingenious control device to motivate students to stay on task and caught up. And with the study time I have put in, the live reviews, etc. I have achieved 97% test scores on both the first and second test. I couldn't be happier with the class and have recommended it widely. " I think the Cds are awesome learning resources. I have learned more in this class than in any of my others. "I have learned as much, if not more by viewing the cd lessons. It enables me to view them at my own speed and time and if I don't understand them, I can view it as many times as necessary until I understand. There is no way to do that when you attend class. Especially since there are some classes that are so big that getting individual attention is impossible." "I truly have enjoyed my experience in Accounting 200. I love the classes on CDs because they allow me to proceed at my own pace. In addition, after the material is covered, you are immediately presented with accounting problems to solve. In this way, the concepts presented are reinforced immediately. If you do not do well on the problems, then you know that you do not grasp the concepts completely. From past experience with other classes, I have found that book reading is practically worthless--it is the least effective way of learning new material. Such is not the case with the CDs. The class presentations are very practical as well. I love the class." "Concerning Accounting 200, I really think that the way this class is set up is very efficient. The use of the CDs has been a very helpful way for me to go back and re-listen to a lesson in order to better understand a concept. That isn't possible in a regular textbook class. I find learning about accounting on the CDs a lot more approachable and enjoyable way to learn the information. I don't find any negative in having the CDs as the means for me to learn the information. The class presentations have helped me be able to correlate what I am learning currently on the CDs to the real world. The real world application has helped me better understand what can be done with the knowledge I am gaining." "I feel that this has been a great introduction to accounting. I am currently taking Acc 200, Stat 221, Hist 201, PS 100, and Soils 335 and this (Accounting) has taken more time and effort than any of my other classes. I do think that the required classes are the most beneficial learning experiences, but I also think that it's designed that way...The real life stuff is what I care about. I honestly don't see how we could be exposed to as much information if we were restricted to class time lectures only, not to mention the fact that we can review any lesson any time we need to. If Norm didn't make himself available to the students, I would feel differently, but I think that he does, and this is a good learning experience." "I believe that the approach that Mr. Nemrow is taking to teach Acc 200 is really appropriate. I happen to be the sort of person who has learned better from a lecture than from a text, so to have the text in lecture form on CD's has greatly facilitated the learning process for me. This means that I have learned more about accounting and I'll retain more of that education than I would have in a class that primarily utilizes a text. On top of that, I have been able to view the lectures on CD, to some degree, at my leisure, thus lowering the stress level I must endure while trying to learn the subject matter. That has helped more focus more, learn more, and retain more. In all, I think it's a wonderful and successful approach to education." "The CD's are a great educational tool. Most classes require reading and then dry lectures to go over what has already been read. However, with the CD's, the lectures and the 'reading' are one, there is no mandatory duplication, and the lectures are much more interesting. For me, the CD's are more efficient, more interesting, more effective, and overall better, than would a regular lecture class in accounting would be. " "Acc 200 has been my favorite class at BYU. I think that the CD format is excellent. Reading out of a textbook is tedious and the mind tends to wander. With the CD's however, it is very easy to stay focused on the material and it is enjoyable. I retain much more information on the CD format. The eight required classes have been excellent because after having learned the material on the CD, I go and see how it really works in the business world. I could not think of a better way to teach a class. I feel like I haven't just crammed the material to get a good score on a test, but I have actually been educated. The only drawback of only going to class eight times is not being able to see Norm every other day. I think he is a great guy." "I find the cds to be very beneficial because unlike a lecture where you can't ask a professor to repeat what was just said, with the cds if you want to here a statement 10 times you may. Also, the cds are very well done, with great visual aides and other good helps. And its nice because if there is a point that you struggle to understand, you can stop the lecture where you are, get help from the accounting lab tutors, and then complete the lesson. In a lecture if there is a point that you do not understand, and the rest of the lecture continues off that point, then you are not only confused with the one point, but rather with the entire rest of the lecture. " "Overall I did not like the course. The limited teacher interaction was part of it but there was so much more to it than just that. It seemed like there no real help or explanations outside of the CD's available, now granted there are the labs but after all the time I spent on the lecture notes and the CD's it left little time or desire to want to do more, and I did spend long hours studying the material. The format of the CD's becomes very monotonous very quickly and I found myself losing interest in the material. The class presentations were very enjoyable though and were very interesting. Norm is a great lecturer and it seems a waste to have him inhibited by my computer. I'm sure for some people this way of learning is preferred but for me I enjoy and get a lot from teacher interaction and that style of class." "When I first learned that this class was to be taught non-traditionally I must admit I was a little disappointed and worried that I wouldn't have the self disciple to accomplish the tasks in a timely manner. But as the semester progressed I truly came to appreciate having the lessons on CD. There have been many times while listening to the CDs, that I've been able to stop and rewind the CD, so to speak, and listen to a repeated explanation of a difficult concept. The CDs also provided an efficient way to review for exams--I was able to in a sense relearn difficult material and know that I was truly learning it correctly and not just making my best guest on what it was. I really believe that these CDs not only made it easier for me to learn but improved my grade, had this class been taught in a more traditional style. The only drawback was not having class as often--I wish there had been more required classes and that we were given the opportunity to learn more about this field in class. Thanks Norm--I loved the class." "I am supportive of the current presentation of the material for Acc 200. I have found the CD's to be very effective in the learning process. They allow me to learn at my own speed and I do not sleep during lectures, which is a problem in other classes. The quizzes done on line are a great motivation to stay on schedule and this curriculum allows me to view the lectures at times that are convenient for me. If a given week is going to be extremely busy, I have the opportunity to view lessons ahead of time when my time is not so limited. The lectures also provide valuable insight into real life situations and applications of what is taught in the CD lectures." "I have had a variety of classes. I have had online classes, independent study, and now acc200. I really like the cd's because I can go at my pace. I think it is really nice to have Norm on the screen so that I can focus more. The way my schedule is, I can do my accounting any time I want and I can split it up any way I need to so that it fits into my time frame. I also like how he gives us quizzes. If he didn't, I know I would procrastinate and would do it all the last week!! He is flexible with problems with the computer, so I never feel like I can't do an assignment because the computer was having issues. Even though it is on a cd, I never feel like I can't get help. He is always available and responds to emails rapidly. I have loved this class and have learned a bunch!!" "I think it has been a great benefit for me personally to have CDs rather than a textbook. I am able to understand the material much easier, because I am able to learn at my own pace (for the most part). Overall I think it has been a great way to learn. " "This is the greatest class! It allows me to do my work on my own time, when I have time, and still be able to work during the day. The CDs are great. They provide walkthroughs and hints along the way, which are more than enough information to give you an adequate explanation. It also provides a very helpful glossary. Basically, if you have a question, you can find the answer in one way or another, and if worse comes to worse, Norm is always available for help, as well as the lab. I love it because it is hands on, and interactive, and we don't have to carry a heavy book. You can learn at your own speed too. If you need to hear something twice, you can listen to it twice, and the hints and walkthroughs. The required classes provide great opportunities to apply what we have been learning to real life, and learn about practical applications. This is by far, the best class I have ever taken. It is not because it is easy (it is difficult and time consuming), but for so many other reasons. I love it!" " I thought the class was very effective in conveying the material. I learned just as much, if not more, from the cd's in this class as I learn in the classes for which I'm required to attend twice or three times a week and found it to be at least as challenging as the other classes. I actually spent more time for this class than for any of my other classes this semester. I really enjoyed the class overall and would recommend it to anyone as a way of obtaining information and skills that are applicable in life regardless of profession. " "The CD's are a very effective way of teaching the class. They provide both visual and audio aids and we have the chance to back up and listen again to difficult to understand concepts. In a classroom setting the teacher cannot pace the class for everyone." "VIEWING THE CD's HAS BEEN VERY BENEFICIAL. THE INFORMATION IS COMPLETE AND USEFUL. I FIND IT EASIER TO USE THE CD'S THAN STUDY FROM A TEXT BOOK. THE REQUIRED CLASS PRESENTATIONS ARE EXCELLENT. I SEE NO NEED FOR ANY MORE REQUIRED CLASSES--THE 8 ARE PLENTY. THIS COUSE IS WELL ORGANIZED. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT IS STRUCTURED. IT IS CHALLENGING, YET I AM ENCOURAGED THRU THE CD'S TO SUCCEED. " I like the CDs! They work very well for me. " Accounting 200 is as effective a class as I've ever had. The CD lessons are well done and allow the student to do the assignment and their discretion. I also think that college is all about making the right decisions and showing self-motivation. In that respect accounting 200, as it is presently constituted is particularly effective because to get a good grade and understand the material you have to be motivated and want to learn the material. The class presentations are fantastic. Those Professors that present material and Norm have taught me incredible amounts of relative information. I fell that we can talk about important matters in the accounting class. For example I know that we have talked about Enron and the relevance of what is going on in the accounting world whereas a friend of mine says that his upper level accounting classes try to ignore the fact that the accounting world is in an uproar. The CD's are good and the lectures are great! "I think that the CD's are a great tool to help students learn at their own pace and it allows for a more flexible schedule for the student. The lesson quiz's require the student to keep updated on the assignments and the 8 required class's are educational, fun, and sufficient for learning accounting 200." "It has been a great experience for me, not only have I learned a great deal, but I have found it to be very convenient to have the course material on CD. This allows me to more easily fit everything into my schedule. I think that the class is challenging and teaches a great deal. If I could change anything about the class, it would be to make the quizzes fewer and less frequent, but I recognize that this is part of what makes the course challenging and helps students to stay on schedule. I have also enjoyed the required classes; I have found the lectures to be interesting and applicable. Overall, I think that this class has been a nice change from the routine of other classes. I wouldn't change a thing." "I was a little skeptical at first about the style of teaching of this class, but I have found that it is a better way to learn for me. I am able to learn the material much quicker and I retain it better. I would not want to take accounting without this way of teaching it(with the cd's and class presentations). Norm is great!"
