This resource guide represents groups and organizations that have attended Community Together meetings. Community Together is a quarterly gathering of organizations, institutions, and businesses that serve children and families throughout our bi‐state metropolitan area. This multi‐disciplinary group represents social services, health, mental health, law enforcement, education, environment, government, and the spiritual community. All who work with children and families are welcome to come network and share with one another. Anyone in attendance can be on the agenda. Each presenter has 3‐minutes to share information about their group in one of the following areas: 1. sharing examples of collaboration currently involving your organization with other agencies; and 2. sharing public policy issues (federal, state, and local) that are important to your organization and to those you serve. The MODDRC is a network of support options, providing information, peer support, and volunteer opportunities, so that individuals with developmental disabilities and their families are well informed, hopeful, connected within their communities, and are aware that they are not alone in their experience with disability. SOS serves as Missouri's parent to parent/peer support provider. Any SOS or MODDRC service can be accessed at any time by individuals, families, or professionals, and as often as needed. The Institute supports several programs addressing the needs of at risk populations and houses several initiatives including a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Alianzas (promoting partnerships between the University and Latino communities), The Missouri Developmental Disabilities Resource Center, the Interdisciplinary Training Center on Gerontology and Developmental Disabilities, Urban Mission, and a one‐stop Resource Center for Latino Families of children with Disabilities. The Institute also provides technical assistance and training services to federal, state, and local human service agencies in the form of needs assessment, grant writing, and program development and evaluation. The mission of the UCEDD is to improve the quality of life for people across the entire life span by promoting community inclusion, community membership, independence, productivity, and social participation. This mission is founded on the beliefs that: All people, including those with developmental disabilities, deserve the love and nurturing unique to their own families. People with developmental disabilities have the right to live independently in their communities, work productively for fair compensation in regular workplaces, and participate fully in community activities. Resource & Referral lists of medical professionals, service providers and vendors that have experience with ALS are maintained by The Chapter. Education through materials and programs for patients, care givers and families. Support groups for ALS patients, families, caregivers, and survivors meet monthly throughout Kansas, Nebraska, and Western Missouri. These groups present the opportunity to learn from professionals in fields related to the management of ALS. As the needs change the latest information is made available. These meetings also provide support and fellowship with others who are experiencing ALS. Alter Counseling Services is a full‐service Counseling agency located in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, offering individual, family, and group counseling for adults, children, and adolescents. These counseling services are available through licensed psychologists, social workers, and counselors with years of experience and expertise. We also have additional services to go far beyond counseling including psychological evaluations for both English and Spanish speaking individuals; para‐professional services of Mentors and Parent Aides; services at the site where they are needed; be it at our modern offices, in the client's home, or elsewhere; and providers skilled in working in a case management environment and knowledgeable in writing professional reports and giving expert testimony. The Missouri Student Success Network (MSSN) provides a network of support for improving the quality of life for youth and their families who are at‐risk or in crisis. Through collaborative partnerships that include sharing resources, building a common vision, and embracing diversity, MSSN enhances student performance statewide. The Missouri Student Success Network (MSSN) is an outgrowth of the Alternative Schools Network Association (ASNA) which represented a network of public school districts, private schools, charter schools, individual alternative schools, dropout prevention programs, and other community and state agencies in Missouri that provided support services for students at risk of school failure and their families. The ASNA Mission was to coordinate, strengthen, and increase the effectiveness of educational programs and services for "at risk" and "difficult to educate" students. parent homes) gain greater self‐confidence. “Bigs” encourage “Littles” to realize their potential and see themselves as having happy and successful futures. Big Brother and Big Sister mentors have influenced the lives of over one million children in thousands of communities across the nation. The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Payless Cashways provided operating dollars to pilot this program; local lending institutions such as Commerce, Bank IV, and Mark Twain initially capitalized the loan fund. Services were first offered in March 1994. From the beginning, First Step Fund’s mission has been to foster economic self‐sufficiency through entrepreneurship training, access to capital, and ongoing support. The founders shared a common belief that self‐employment, or entrepreneurship, can be a viable alternative to public assistance or minimum‐wage and other low‐paying jobs. FOCUS Kansas City started in 1992 when Mayor Emanuel Cleaver appointed a Civic Steering Committee to lead a strategic planning process initiated by the City Council. Kansas City, like other American cities, was facing a variety of issues such as urban poverty, blight, shifts in the structure of our economy and others. Recognizing that short term solutions to these problems would not provide adequate long term benefits, the Mayor and City Council embarked in a process to identify long‐term strategies to address neighborhoods, jobs, education, the expenditure of public funds, and many other issues important to our citizens and to our city. By focusing on their vocational and educational needs, JVS played a major role in the successful integration of hundreds of immigrants into the Kansas City community. In addition, JVS developed services to meet the vocational rehabilitation needs of returning World War II veterans, a significant number of whom were disabled. Dedicated to assisting a global, war‐weary community, JVS staff and volunteers realized the considerable contribution they could make in helping the disadvantaged from all sectors of the community. Today, JVS has expanded our services to anyone with a barrier, whether due to physical or developmental disabilities, or acculturation difficulties. JVS now serves fourteen counties in both Missouri and Kansas. Their goal, and the mission of the JGCP, is to improve area children’s developmental and educational experiences and thus, their academic and social achievements. Since its inception, the project has sought to develop meaningful solutions to what local citizens view as major problems. JGCP also provides a place for KU faculty and students to learn from the wisdom and experiences of the urban community. The NGWRC was organized by veterans of the 1991 Gulf War who began to experience an unexplained illness after returning from the war. Troops were exposed to low levels of Sarin Gas from chemical munitions destroyed by allied forces, and to related chemicals in the pesticides and anti‐
nerve agents they used. They were also exposed to oil well fire pollution, depleted uranium, vaccines, other chemicals, and indigenous parasites and diseases. Over 150,000 Gulf War veterans are now ill, most as a result of their military duty, and many report effects in their spouses and children. The NGWRC began its work as the central resource for the grassroots groups formed by these veterans and their family and supporters around the country. In an atmosphere of mutual support and teamwork, the member organizations of the NGWRC joined together to provide advocacy for health care and self help to those affected by the Gulf War and those who have served the United States and it allies since then, expanding its focus from Gulf War Illness to also include other toxin‐induced illnesses, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder. Every year, thousands of people of all ages are diagnosed with leukemia and other life‐threatening diseases. Many of them will die unless they get a bone marrow or cord blood transplant from a matching donor.
