Students study: resource allocation, bidding, competition interaction and how the culture of Italy and the U.K. affect negotiations and the construction process. The study abroad also discusses typical construction problems related to the construction industry within Italy and the U.K. Students visit several construction projects and sites of historical importance. BCN 4708 Construction Contracts and Documents (3 credits) A study of the legal and protective documentation used in the construction field. These documents include contracts, specifications, insurance and bonds. CGS 1100 Computer Applications for Business (3 credits) This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of personal computing for business majors and other non-computer science majors. Topics include the Windows operating system, word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation aids, internet, e-mail and related areas. Students may not receive credit for CGS1100 and also for CGS1570. BCN 4956 Study Abroad: Brazil (3 credits) (Co-leader 2012) Students are exposed to issues involving construction in Brazil. Students study: resource allocation, bidding, competition interaction and how the culture of the Brazil affects negotiations and the construction process. The study abroad also discusses typical construction problems related to the construction industry within Brazil. Students visit several construction projects and sites of historical importance. BCN 3782 Introduction to Construction Computing (3 credits) This course covers the study of application computer programs employed in the construction industry. Areas of study include the Internet, construction scheduling, construction cost estimating and construction drawing. Software taught: Excel, WinEst, Microsoft Project 2010 and ArchiCAD 15. BCN 4956 Study Abroad: France (3 credits) (leader 2011 and co-leader 2009) Students will be exposed to issues involving construction in France. Students will study: resource allocation, bidding, competition interaction and how the culture of the French affects negotiations and the construction process. The study abroad will also discuss typical construction problems related to the construction industry within France. Students visit several construction projects and sites of historical importance. BCN 4956 Study Abroad: Canada (3 credits) (leader 2009 and co-leader 2007) Students will gain knowledge and skills in the management of construction projects, including: bidding and estimating, ethical conduct, project delivery methods, value engineering, asset allocation, design/build, customer relations and communications, all in the context of Canada. Students visit several construction projects and sites of historical importance. BCN 4753 Construction Admin and Economics with distance learning (3 credits) The students will study: the current economic context of the construction industry both micro and macro, the nature of construction costs, funding sources and arrangements, capital requirements, 2 James J. Students will gain: an understanding of business plan preparation and organization, an introduction to construction accounting, an understanding of risk management, an understanding of construction financial management and practice in written and oral communications. BCN 4730 Construction Safety plus distance learning section (3 credits) Students will study: Construction safety issues, concerns, requirements and procedures. The analysis includes: cost, planning, administration, inspection, prevention, loss control and the drugfree work place. Students will be certified for OSHA 10 hr card. BCN 4956 Study Abroad: Egypt (3 credits) (co-leader 2009) Students will study: management techniques, bidding procedures, the theory behind Design/Build, major characteristics of international construction, price structures, competition, resource allocation, environmental issues and risk factors. All topics will be in context of performing work in Egypt, in the Middle East and the specific role that the Egyptian culture plays.
