Page 7 Page 2 The Rizalian President’s Message July 2014 New Set of Officers and Directors for 2014-2016 By Carmelita “Bel” Raimundo ‘65* Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends, I accepted the position of President of Rizal High School Alumni Association of North America with some trepidation. I have big shoes to fill. After all, our association could not have been started and prospered had it not been for the selfless dedication, focus and hard work of the previous administrations. To them we owe a debt of gratitude. The support and cooperation of our general membership is highly commendable. I would like to ask for the same level of dedication from both the general membership and the Board of Directors. We have a lot to be thankful for, we should look back to where we originally came from and share our blessings with people that matter. We should not deny assistance to any student who is deserving of our help. For it is in helping that we acknowledge our past and share in the joy of fulfillment. To date, 33 recipients in our Financial Aid Program have graduated. For the first semester of school year 2014-2015 we have 10 repeat applicants and 7 new applicants. Thanks to the members of the newly formed RHSAA, NA Financial Aid Program Committee and the Select Committee in the Philippines for stepping up to the plate. There is much work to be done in our organization. We should be able to rise above our personal circumstances. There will be differences between and among members; it is the resolution of conflicts that will move us forward toward greater heights. And focusing on our common objective of helping our alma mater keep its ideals and visions alive, we should be able to set aside all differences and achieve the programs we have set to accomplish. ◊ Outgoing President—Vener Siasoco ‘58* Here I am taking heed to Frank Sinatra in his song “My Way”. “And now, the end is near, and so I face the final curtain. My friend, I'll say it clear, I'll state my case, of which I'm certain …. I faced it all and I stood tall, and did it my way”. And I would like to add —“and your way, too”. This is the exit message of my presidential term. I also would like to thank my batch mates, new and old friends, especially the board of directors for supporting me and the association. It was a great time for camaraderie and quite a learning experience, too. I will be around to assist my successor Bel Raimundo ‘65 *, Estry Alan-Stephens ’61* and the rest of our board members. Paid members who receive a transcript of this newsletter, please share it with other batch mates who cross your paths. Spread the word so you may convince them to also become members. No offers yet, just initial interviews with San Miguel Brewery, Lafarge Cement and Coca Cola. The program has been very helpful and supportive. The program has helped me in more ways than one in terms of the financial aspect. It has also taught me the value of giving back to the community the way that the program has helped students like me in pursuing my dream. Thank you again and God bless us all. ◊ Bernadeth Trinidad ‘09 Technological Institute of the Philippines BS Accountancy I have been a recipient of the grant for 10 semesters. Currently, I am having my review in CPAR Manila for the preparation in the CPA board exam this October. This scholarship program really helped me and my parents a lot financially. Without this scholarship I think I will not be able to finish my studies and be able to reach my dreams. Thank you once again. ◊ John Paul S. Santos ‘09 University of the East - Manila BS Accountancy I received a grant from RHSAA, NA for three semesters. I am now taking my review at CPAR in preparation for the CPA Board Exam this October 2014. Even if it was just for a short term that I was a RHSAA, NA Scholar, the financial assistance I received helped me a lot especially during those times when we were experiencing financial difficulty. I still had an unpaid balance with the school, it is the scholarship that helped me in settling that obligation. I also want to thank those people behind this program because it also inspired me to help my fellow Rizalians when there is an opportunity to do so. I've been a RHSAA, NA Scholar, and I will also be a part of this family. I would also want to contribute in the programs of Page 3 RHSAA, NA if I am able to do it. I would also be glad to support and volunteer in any projects that would be sponsored by the said scholarship program. ◊ Danica Leane Panganiban ‘09 University of Asia and the Pacific Master of Science in Industrial Economics I received grant from RHSAA, NA eight times (from 1st semester of 2nd Year College until 2nd semester of 5th Year (Master's Degree) I recently signed the job offer at The Nielsen Company (PHL). Today (May 28, 2014) is my first day on the job as a Consumer Packaged Goods Client Service Executive handling the accounts of Nestle Products. The scholarship assistance helped me ease the financial burden of my family. Through the grant, I was able to buy academic books and pay for reading materials needed for certain courses in college. Because of this, I am grateful to all those people behind RHSAA, NA. I hope that you continue to provide support to more students like me who are in need of assistance. ◊ Gene Michael T. Webb ‘61* L-R: Ruel Poticar (B'82), Alma Bautista, Rea Poticar-Lazo, Lia & Pablo Poticar, Tess & Ariel Bautista Jun 28, 2014, Mission Santa Clara, CA. It all started as an idea as my sister and I visited Mission San Fernando back in Sep 16, 2012. On this day marks the 25th Anniversary of Pope John Paul’s visit. Imagine the richness of the history not just of this particular mission but there are 20 more for us to see. We made a vow to visit all 21 California Missions within a year. We now realized that it was a very ambitious goal. It took us 21 months to visit all of them starting from San Diego to Sonoma. Our parents, my husband and his mother tagged along as we made the trek to experience history. Each one has its own personality, beauty, history, artifacts and built. Some are much simple than others. A few of them are still the original or part of the original mission and a number of them had been rebuilt. Some are easy to access while others are in the middle of nowhere and are hard to find. A couple of them are owned by the State while the rest still observes mass. One of the State owned is Mission La Purisima Concepcion in Lompoc. The state recreated the entire mission back in the day so you’ll see the complete structures, some local animals and imagine their way of living. Although they have their differences they were all founded with one goal in mind, to spread Christianity over 200 years ago. Mission Santa Clara was the Mission that completes it all for us. It was a very fulfilling journey that we are so glad to achieve. ◊ By Tess Poticar-Bautista ‘80 I took a three-week vacation in March 2014 to the Philippines with my wife Tessie. With my siblings living in one compound, there is no hassle to find a place to stay. My sister Amelita Santiago ’63 took the above photo at Plaza Rizal in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral after meeting with DepEd Supervisor Bessie Austria, Flor Orleans and RHS Principal Virginia Membrebe. We had a chance to join a tour to see the famous 8.2 kilometer Puerto Princesa Underground River in Palawan and a short trip to “Kamay ni Hesus” Shrine in Lucban, Quezon. We also went to Agoo, La Union to visit my wife’s relatives as well as the burial plots of her deceased relatives. Our vacation days just went too fast but we both enjoyed seeing our country again. ◊ By Vener Siasoco ‘58* Page 6 The Rizalian What’s New With You?
