Information Technology Services
All newly enrolled School of Medicine students are encouraged to visit the School of
Medicine’s IT office before orientation to obtain help configuring laptops and mobile
devices for Emory’s wireless network (EmoryUnplugged) and Exchange Email System.

Laptops are required for all MD and PA students. Please see Section 3 to verify
your laptop meets all Minimum Requirements.

Netbooks, tablets and computing devices that run light operating systems will not provide the
optimal computing experience. These devices are not recommended for use as a primary
computer and will have limited support from SOM Information Technology Services.
Removable Storage
We recommend all students purchase a USB Flash Drive that provides
264-bit (ASE) hardware-based data encryption.
Example USB Flash Drive:
Kingston Technology’s DataTraveler Vault - Privacy Edition,
supports Mac OS 10.6 and Windows 7.

3 Minimum Computer Requirements

6 Email
As a SOM student you will be provided with an email account via Emory’s Microsoft Exchange server. To protect
confidential healthcare data and comply with federal regulations, mail cannot be automatically forwarded from your
Exchange email accounts to other Emory or non-Emory email accounts.
Students will have two options for checking their Exchange email.
1. Mac and Windows users running supported web browsers may go to owa.emory.edu, login with your email @emory
user name (NetID) and password to have full access to your email, directory, and calendar.
2. Use one of the supported email clients. For configuration instructions please use the web resources listed.

7 Email and Smartphones
If you choose to setup your Emory Exchange account on your mobile device, please account for the additional data use
on your cell phone’s data plan. Your mobile device must support Exchange ActiveSync to be supported. Current versions
of iPhone (iOS), *Android, and **BlackBerry are recommended for connecting to the Emory Exchange server.

8 Smart Device Security Policy
** SOM Students will not have access or support for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). SOMITS will
only provide configuration support via BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).
The security safeguards required by the smart device security policy will be enforced as a condition of
access for any smart devices that connect to Emory Exchange to check email and calendar items.
If you do not check Emory Exchange email on your device the policy will not be applied to it.
I f you check your Emory email on your smart device, the only visible change will be that a four
digit PIN will be required to unlock your device after a period of no more than 15 minutes of
inactivity. When the policy is applied to your device, you will be prompted to configure this
PIN if you have not configured one already. If your device is not already encrypted,
it will be encrypted after you create your PIN.

The following specific settings will be enforced:
1. A four digit PIN will be required to unlock your device
2. Your device will automatically lock (require your PIN to be entered) after a maximum
of no more than 15 minutes of inactivity.

3. If someone enters your PIN incorrectly 10 times, the device will erase itself.
4. If your device supports it, the data stored on it will be encrypted.

Audience Response System (ARS)
Emory University School of Medicine uses Turning Point’s ResponseWare for interactive lectures.
Most web-enabled smartphones will be able to access Turning Point’s ResponseWare via a mobile friendly
webpage.
Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, and BlackBerry smartphones have the option of utilizing Turning
Point’s mobile application.
Passwords
New Students:
Emory University NetID, all students should go to enid.emory.edu and set their Authentication
Questions. Setting your Authentication Questions will enable access and reset of your
password in the event it is forgotten. ENID will also allow you to Select An Email Name,
access your Spam Filtering options, and reset your Emory Network
(Exchange, OPUS, LearnLink and Blackboard) passwords.
