Special Consideration
What do I need to know before applying for special
consideration?
Special consideration applies to assessment items or exams that
you have already attempted. If you cannot attempt an assessment
item or exam you may apply to defer or seek an extension.
You may apply for special consideration for the following reasons:
o
o
o
o
o
Illness
Accident
Disability
Bereavement
Other compassionate circumstances
You have 3 working days after sitting an exam to submit an
application for special consideration.
If applying for special consideration for an assignment you must
submit your request within 3 working days of the due date of the
assessment item.
If seeking special consideration for all assessment in a course you
must submit your request within 3 working days of completing the
final assessment for that course.
The Chair, School Assessment Board (who is usually the Head of
School) assesses applications and decides whether or not to grant
special consideration.
Special consideration may result in:
An extension of time to complete the assessment item
Award of a final grade based on performance across the course
Alternative or replacement assessment task
Recommendation of “withdrawal without failure on
compassionate grounds”.

Supporting Documents
This is your evidence to prove your case, examples include:
Medical Certificate completed by a registered medical or dental
practitioner
Letter from counsellor, psychologist etc.
Bereavement notice
Statutory Declaration
Police/Accident Report
Ensure that all evidence provided includes specific details – general
statements such as “suffering a medical condition” or
“experiencing personal difficulties” will not usually be accepted
without more specific information.
If experiencing illness or personal difficulties during semester
wherever possible seek support from health, support or counselling
professionals at the time. Professionals are limited in their ability to
provide supporting documents for situations that have already
resolved.
