At Queen Elizabeth's High School, we aim for high standards in all we do. We strive to fulfil the potential of each student. We set out to develop knowledge, understanding, skills and values and we encourage endeavour and achievement of all kinds, academic, sporting, artistic and personal. We aim to achieve this through a carefully planned, broad education in which enthusiastic teachers use a variety of teaching styles in activities inside and outside the classroom. We work hard to involve students and parents in responsibility for learning. Staff set themselves high standards and expect the same from students. All members of the QEHS community are encouraged to contribute to the whole and from that gain a genuine sense of belonging. We aim to maintain a friendly and caring atmosphere, in which students and staff share a mutual respect. We expect responsible behaviour from students; they can expect fair treatment from staff. We intend to keep parents and students fully informed about our policies and achievements and to listen to their views. When they leave Queen Elizabeth's High School, we want students to be well-balanced adults, inspired to continue their learning and able to contribute positively to society. We recognise that school provides a solid and firm foundation upon which students build their lives. As such, we focus on traditional values set in a modern-day context. We an inclusive school which views each and every child as an individual with individual needs. As such students who join us with SEN&D needs will be treated as an individual and we will take all reasonable steps to meet the need of the child. QEHS has received several awards including awards for our student voice and our support for environmental awareness. We are also an enhanced Healthy School. The individual experience lies at the heart of all of our work. We will make provision where it is reasonable to do so to meet the needs and ambitions of all students including students with SEND needs. This includes everything from acting on stage or performing in a music concert to competing in sporting competitions for their house. Students with identified Special Education Needs are supported through a dedicated team of Teaching Assistants who have experience of and expertise in a wide range of SEN, including ASD, Asperger's, Dyslexia and Sensory impairment. This team is supported by a fulltime school counsellor and SENCO. Support can take a variety of forms from 1:1 individual mentoring to support in the classroom. Wherever possible QEHS aims to include students in the learning experience and so supports students in the classroom rather than removing students from the classroom. We have experience of students who have specific medical needs such as Cystic Fibrosis, diabetes or brittle bone disease. We can meet the needs of students confined to a wheelchair as most of the site is either on one level or there is accessibility provision such as lifts. There are a very small number of areas of the school which are not accessible but the resources provided in these areas are offered in an accessible part of the school. We have several accessible toilet facilities including a hygiene suite. Students may receive intensive support for short periods of time or may be supported throughout their time in the school; this is dependent on the individual need. We have close working relationships with external agencies including Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Sensory Impaired Unit and CAMHS. We have successfully supported students with SEN through to employment or University including the selecting universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
