Freeman at GSA, Booth #235 9/12/12 6:05 PM Micro XRF Inside the Scanning Electron Microscope Visit us at GSA Booth #406 IXRF Systems, Inc., has developed micro-focus x-ray fluorescence (µXRF) adaptations available for mounting inside Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) chambers—SEM-XRF. Unlike electron-beam excitation, µXRF excitation produces a much smaller background and enabes parts-per-million (ppm) elemental detection and quantification. Traditionally, µXRF has only been available as a bench-top, stand-alone unit. But now, IXRF exclusively integrates a high-powered x-ray source, couples it with polycapillary optics, and interfaces it with virtually any SEM; all the traditional benefits of bench-top µXRF including trace analysis and beam spots sizes between 10-40 microns are now achievable into an existing SEM. When coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), the microscopist can collect element data through electron beam excitation of the lighter elements (below 2.0 keV), and use the µXRF adaption to excite the heavier elements (above 2.0 keV); all on the same sample area, at the same time using both excitation sources! Additionally, the high vacuum of the SEM, coupled with a premium light element x-ray detector can offer unprecedented XRF analysis that simply cannot be obtained from stand-alone units. How it works Each Micro-focus x-ray tube is mounted on an open SEM port. The IXRF (Integrated X-Ray Fluorescence) system is vacuum interlocked with the SEM chamber, to allow safe specimen exchange. The x-rays from the source are shut off automatically when the SEM chamber is vented. The specimen is then examined using both the electron beam and the XRF source. Without ever removing the sample, these two technologies can be used simultaneously at the same location; in many instances better than Electron Microprobe Analysis. Why: Electron beam excitation produces significant electron scatter, which adds background to the x-ray spectrum, and hides the “traces” in the background. INCREASE Detection IMPROVE Accuracy SEPARATE Peaks Data Discovered. www.ixrfsystems.com SEM Pole EDS Detector X-ray Source Micro-focus “X-Beam” mounted on a Scanning Electron Microscope port.
