"Carol is a real lecturer who loves to teach” Geophyicist, Tately “Good” Geophysicist, Tately N.V/T www.petroEDGEasia.net I N TE GRAT ED SEQUE NC E STRA TI GRAPHY COURSE INTRODUCTION This course will follow a workshop format. The workshop will emphasise the underlying geological principles, processes and terminology related to the interpretation and use of seismic sequence stratigraphy and its integration with well log sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy. It will also provide attendees with the opportunity to interpret the sequence stratigraphy of part of a selected sedimentary basin. KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Understand sequence stratigraphic concepts and controls Identify systems tracts and stratigraphic sequences from depositional facies, well logs and seismic facies. Construct a sequence stratigraphic model by integrating lithological, biostratigraphical, seismic and well data. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Explorationists, geologists, stratigraphers and geophysicists who wish to extend their knowledge through integration of seismic sequence stratigraphy with well log sequence stratigraphy and the application of biostratigraphy to sequence stratigraphy. COURSE CONTENTS: Introduction Eustatic controls on depositional stratal patterns Seismic expression of sequence Interpretation of seismic reflections in depositional sequences Sequence and systems tracts Sequence expression in well logs Interpretation of systems tracts from well log character Clastic and carbonate depositional environments Variation on the model: Application and exploration significance Introduction to seismic sequence stratigraphy; concepts; eustatic controls; assumptions; definition of key terms. Accommodation and equilibrium types; systems tract boundaries. Criteria and approach for picking sequence boundaries. Definition of seismic sequence; seismic facies. Highstand; falling stage; lowstand; transgressive; shelf margin systems tracts. Log characters of parasequences, maximum flooding surfaces and criteria for picking sequence boundaries. Integration of well log sequence stratigraphy with seismic sequence stratigraphy Depositional responses to changes in relative sea level Use of global sea level curve ABOUT YOUR EXPERT TRAINER: CAROL HOPKINS Carol is a Senior Project Scientist and the Manager of the Training Department at Robertson CGG Company, her first degree is in Geology and Environmental Science and she is completing a PhD focusing on the sedimentological, depositional and environmental indicators of trace fossil preservation in reservoir sands of the northern North Sea. Carol has 16 years experience of leading field trips and teaching geology to a variety of user groups, including 6 years teaching undergraduates, and was a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Central Lancashire for 3 years. She has conducted fieldwork in the Locharbriggs and Hopeman Sandstone Formations, Scotland and Coconino Sandstone, Arizona, USA, and led fieldtrips in the US and many areas of the UK. In addition, Carol has lead university regional geology day schools and has comprehensive experience in course and study programme writing. She has always enjoyed making science more accessible to the public and devised and taught night school courses on geology. Working with clients from different backgrounds has allowed Carol to develop novel ways of demonstrating difficult geological concepts which work well in the training environment. Carol has extensive experience of delivering courses and workshops to a wide range of nationalities in Clastic and Carbonate Reservoir Geology, Wireline Log Interpretation, Integrated Sequence Stratigraphy, Basin Analysis and Exploration & Appraisal workshops. In delivering the Exploration Team Management Workshop she has project managed and taught key principles and modules on project planning, data collection/collation, geophysical assessment, stratigraphy and facies mapping, source rock facies and hydrocarbon generation, play fairway mapping, risking and prospect evaluation. She has also taught Petroleum Geology for Non-Geologists and Introduction to the E&P Business. Carol’s knowledge and enthusiasm for instructing is reflected in consistently being rated as excellent by trainees and clients specifically requesting her participation in courses.
