BA (Joint Honours)
BUSINESS LAW
Business Law is concerned with those
aspects of legal regulations which are of
special relevance to the world of industry
and commerce. These include company law,
employment law and the law relating to the
sale of goods.
The Business Law modules have been
tailored to equip students with a knowledge
of those aspects of the law which will be
useful in a business context.
At Strathclyde, Business Law is regarded
not only as a vocational study, but
also as a broad liberal education. The
interdisciplinary pattern of study is a
special feature of this University and the
Law School, which enables all students, if
they wish, to incorporate Business Law into
their course.
Please note that taking Business Law within
the BA degree will not qualify you for entry
into the legal profession. For professional
qualifications in Law, see the leaflet
entitled LLB Law.
Degree Structure
Business Law is available as a second
Principal Subject only, within the BA in
Strathclyde Business School in conjunction
with another Principal Subject to joint
Honours only.
The duration of the BA joint Honours degree
is four years. All students are admitted as
potential Honours students. Students may
exit with a BA degree at the end of Year 3 if
they have achieved the required standard.
Business Law may be combined with the
following Business subjects:
Accounting
Business Analysis & Technology
Business Enterprise
Economics
Finance
Hospitality and Tourism Management
Human Resource Management
Management Science
Marketing
Year 1 is a broad-based foundation course
in which you choose a number of basic
classes in business and other disciplines
alongside the Business School’s
Management Development Programme
(see separate leaflet).
You will receive advice at both degree level
and subject level on which classes you
should choose, based on your
individual interests and strengths.
At the start of Year 2, you select two of your
first-year subjects to study in more depth
during Years 2 and 3, alongside a third
‘minor’ subject. Years 2 and 3 will also
include further classes in the Management
Development programme .
For admission to the final year of the
Honours course, a student must have
qualified for the BA degree and achieved an
approved standard of performance.
The curriculum, by year, is as follows:
Year 1
You take the basic first semester class,
Business Law, in addition to classes in
your other subjects. The class provides
an introduction to law and legal systems
including legal sources and court systems
as well as the law of delict (damages for
wrongful behaviour such as negligence
and defamation) and the law of contract,
awareness of which is crucial for business.
Students are also introduced to topics of
practical importance to people interested
in business and commerce, including how
companies and partnerships are formed
and how they are managed according to
the law.
Other topics include the protection
of minority shareholders, corporate
liquidation and the law of agency. Further
topics, such as trusts, business regulation
and intellectual property law are taught on
a ‘directed reading’ basis.
Years 2 & 3
You select classes in Business Law and your
other Principal Subject.
There are no prescribed classes. During
Years 2 and 3, you can choose from among
the following options:
Employment Law covers the central matters between employee and employer.
Public International Law is concerned with rules regulating the conduct of states in their relations with each other.
Competition Law studies the sometimes surprising and unpredictable effects of competition law.
Internet Law explores legal issues and debates raised by the computer revolution.
Banking Law & Finance is concerned with the legal relationship of banker and
customer, especially the law and practice of lending.
Planning Law considers the legal regulation of development and land use.
EU Law considers the institutions and laws of the EU.
Business Crimes considers general principles of criminal responsibility, as well as some specific crimes, eg theft,
fraud, insider dealing, trade descriptions.
Year 4 (Honours – Joint only)
You select two Honours classes which are
normally a development of the core and
optional classes of the previous three years.
Business Law tutors are
frequently practising lawyers
and lecturers in all business
subjects are well respected
academics. I’ve found the
entire experience challenging,
enjoyable and rewarding.
