Founded in 1887, Kampar is located about 169 km north of Kuala Lumpur, 30 km south of Ipoh and 85 km east of Pangkor and Lumut. It was a tin mining town which boomed during the height of the tin mining industry. There were many tin mines on the outskirts of Kampar during the height of the mining boom. Most of them were established in the late 19th century, flourished in the 1900s, only to stagnate and decline after World War I, with the exception of an exhilarating boom in the 1920s. Most have closed down following the collapse of the industry, especially in the late 20th century. Kampar at Present: In the 21th century, Kampar town can now be broadly divided between the 'old town' and 'new town' areas. At present, the commercial and industrial sectors are main driving forces of Kampar's economy. More recently, its economy is further driven by the construction of the new Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Tunku Abdul Rahman College University, and the Westlake International School. Besides, a Tesco Hypermarket has also opened on 13 August 2008, and both Econsave and Giant are now in operations too in the town of universities. Apart from that, Kampar is well known for its freshwater fishing spots as most of its surrounding covered by old man-made lakes; centuries old abandoned tin mine which turned into natural lakes. Most of these lakes are also converted into fish farms, duck farms or other horticulture produce farms. Some are even converted into recreational area for the public. Nearby Attractions Kellie's Castle is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 30 minutes' drive from Kampar, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. In 1890s, the young Smith at the age of 20 left his home farm in Kellas for Malaya. Coincidently, Smith met an estate owner and had partnered with him to build roads in South Perak. Their partnership in these projects led to quite a bit of profits. In time, he purchased a land for his rubber tree plantation and homely estate in Batu Gajah. 20 years after, Smith began planning the construction of a huge castle to celebrate the birth of his first son. Unfortunately, he ran in to one major setting back of the Spanish Flu and World War I. In the end, Kellie's Castle was never completed.
