November 2012 Volume VI, No.1 www.benedictocollege.com.ph A.S. Fortuna, Mandaue City 6014,Cebu NEW FACES, NEW CHALLENGES The 2012 – 2013 academic year saw some of the more dramatic changes that happened to Benedicto College as its organizational set up changed hands with the installation of a new school director, chief operating officer and vice-president for academics and administration. The institutional student orientation and staff and faculty development programs got underway as academic activities gained momentum. The academic calendar of activities was now set in motion. At the helm in running the affairs of the 12-year old Benedicto College is Miss Joyce Natalie Yang, a holder of a master’s degree in Business Economics earned from the University of Asia and the Pacific. Yang took over the BC’s reins from Dr. Efren S. Valiente who decided to quit the executive post to join some of his family members who are now based in New York City in the United States of America. Miss Yang’s entry took the general population of the college by surprise as many did not know of any plan of Dr. Valiente’s exit. As Dr. Valiente explained later he accepted the invitation to join his daughter who is working in the Big Apple. The college got an initial glimpse into the direction the new college administrator was taking in leading the college during a lunch tendered for the college adminsitrative staff and faculty immediately after the student’s orientation in early July 2012. “We will focus on people, as we move on. We will proceed by sustaining some of the old directions yet potentially beneficial and implement new programs we consider to give more benefits to the college,” declared Miss Yang who projected an unassuming image and The earliest benefits felt by the college was in the registrar’s office, the processing of students’ identification card, in particular. The processing is now faster as suggested by the new administator who showed having execellent skills in using and applying computer technologies for program planning and implementation. The New Vice Pres. For Academics & Administration (VPA-A) and calm countenance for such a noble goal of an educational institution. Soon after, one visible and physical change effected was the installation of close circuit television covering major offices and areas in the campus. However, Miss Yang pointed out this idea was not hers as this was already planned by the Benedicto’s before her entry to the college. Some new assignments of personnel’s duties and responsibilities in both academic and administrative areas were put in place. Then the faculty room was moved to the third floor together with the deans and academic chairs. “The new process has relieved me from some of the burdens brought on by errors in the preparation of student IDs,” explained registrar Professor Fe N. Reyes. “Miss Yang is quite fast in resolving conflicts,” added Prof. Reyes. Miss Yang, together with some select faculty from the basic education and college departments, also took some initial steps revisiting the school’s vision-mission statements; thus, providing a new platform as a take off point in setting academic objectives and goals. While the new administration, together with the old and new staff, faculty and students, is yet to complete a first full academic year’s task in addressing the various school concerns and challenges, for all and sundry, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders of Benedicto College to cooperate towards the development of the instution.. Benedicto College Volume VI, No.1 November 2012 “To Sir and Maam with Love” My Teacher, My Hero! WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY October 5, 2012 – The whole world bowed down before the practitioner of the noblest profession: the teacher. The observance was one well-participated college-wide event during the first semester. Teachers and students from the basic education ( elementary and secondary), college and the vocational-technical department of Benedicto College converged at the Kinetic Centrum to show respects and recognition of the role played by teachers in shaping the lives of the country’s future leaders and citizens. “BC MARKETING” STUDENTS WIN 3RD PLACE The marketing student team of Benedicto College landed third place in the marketing quiz bowl held last September at the Cebu International Convention Center. Traditionally, intramurals is one event that enjoys the most participation from both the studentry and school administration and the 2012 intrams held September 4 – to 7 is no exception. The four-day sporting events, turned students into athletes and teachers from the College of Computer Studies (CCS), Hospitality Management (CHM), Arts and Sciences and Education, combined, (CASE) Nursing and High School, combined, (CN/HS), Vocational/ Technical (Voc-Tech) and College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) and college administrative staff into officiating scorers, timers, arbiters and referees as the whole of Benedicto College stood before the gods of Mt. Olympus who are holding the bars of physical excellence. Expectedly, the highlights of the various sporting events – from the ball to the board games to the cheerdance and dancesport competitions – basketball was again the most hotly contested. Basketball definitely drew the most crowd, eliciting the loudest and most animated cheers from the bleachers of BC’s Kinetic Centrum. Not to be outdone as a crowddrawer, too, was the breathtaking cheerdance competition even as the dancesports event provided the glitz and glams. Provoking anxiety and brain-teasing tensions were the board games of chess and scrabbles (or a taste of the cerebral?) and the display of precision by the dart throwers. Of course, the athletics gods, undoubtedly must have bestowed their precious blessings of genuineness and authenticity upon the intramurals with the inclusion of walkathon as one event.. After all is said and done, this year’s highest honor as the Champion was awarded to the College of Computer Studies (CCS) for having garnered the highest aggregate total points in all the games. Visaya Jr. AS I THINK FOR A TITLE By Irish C. Señora Your eyes are red when you touched my hand tightly “Sorry” you said softly My sadness, hurt both of us And made you became so good at apologizing. Signs, symbols, sights, senses In diverse forms and shades From assorted sources and directions They all convey relative meanings Leading to the world of higher dimensions. I looked up in the ceiling and saw a gecko Nothing is quite as scary as it looked at my direction also Will it fall? What is it staring at? Till I realized I’m holding a cat Sighing, silence plus tears and tiredness How could it be that love just has these leftovers? Was it time that made us a bit stupid? Or we just had happiness but forgot about remembrance. The wind talks to me of a fresh Or sometimes a day so harsh Awe-inspiring beginning Harried ending. If I could stop my affection Loving the happiness I felt when you were still in my arms Maybe I can stop having to wait Waiting for you to come back to the future we’ve promised. The flowers talk to me about life’s hues Brightness, dullness, naturalness Euphoria, despondency, or just conventional Wondering what color would it be For an unsettled being, that’s me. This moment I just want to find an exit To leave this chaos and mess Love or not Let’s talk about it next time. The sun talks to me about shifting degrees of heat From bearable morning to a scorching afternoon But I love to feel both, life’s complete As there’s an irreplaceable emotion. Stay in Touch By Geraldine A. Villamor At night, the crickets and frogs talk to me Wanting this tired mortal flesh to continue working From a hard day’s work But no more, mind is willing but spirit’s so weak. Deep slumber... Life has a way of passing us by And we have forgotten to say “hi” Not realizing that so much time has passed by Not even knowing when was the last time we talked. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen each other Or even have a conversation with each other I realized I miss you so much And I want to get in touch with you. I hope we don’t lose touch again For you are a special person, my friend I hope that life has been good to you And that you’ve found peace and happiness In all you do. Dreams talk to me of scenes so variegated Experiencing a blissful one to a horrifying other No way to just experience the good but likewise the depraved Awaken one’s sensibility as everything talks to you and me Life’s unified, meaningfully weaved. Benedicto College Volume VI, No.1 November 2012 FROM THE ADVISOR’S DESK The Business of Intramurals The adage “All work and no play makes John a dull boy” is best exemplified when institutions like Benedicto College undertakes such event as intramural sports. Once again, the College took a breather from its purely academic duties and responsibilities to hold the 2012 Intramurals with the theme:”Competing fr Excellence the Benedictian Way”. The days lasting from September 4 to 7, saw students and faculty abandoned their classrooms, put aside books and pens, forgot test questions; instead, took to the gymnasium and some open spaces, in hands were sports balls, rackets, chess and scrabble boards to engage themselves in some activities that nourish not only the body but also the mind and the spirit. Under nourished body can become lethargic.Really and truly, a week -long escape from the humdrum of everyday academic concerns is a premium in building and developing a dynamically robust academic community in responding to the challenges set forth in the college’s mission and vision. Corollary to the above mentioned adage is another saying that succinctly and fittingly describes the enabling effect of intramural sports in the transformation towards a healthy academic community. This adage is: “A healthy mind in a healthy body.” By all measures, the mind can never be as sharp if it is kept in a mass of brain which is physically lethargic. Lethargy when not addressed timely may result into a deadly stupor. Let vibrancy, dynamism and energetic then be the guiding vocabulary in the gain and loss ledger for each and every member of the BC community. Congratulations to the administration, staff, faculty, students and everyone who made Intramurals 2012 a success. Keep the ball rolling! -Nicolas T. Ampatin – Advisor THE SONGWRITING WORKSHOP WITH MAESTRO CAYABYAB The Maestro with the PopMusic 2012 finalist. In the afternoon of Friday, October 12, 2012 music enthusiasts - students, amateurs and professionals – from some 20 high schools, colleges and universities within and outside Metro Cebu area - gathered at the state-of-the-art Artist Hall of Benedicto College as the college played host to the Philippine PopMusic Festival Songwriter Workshop. The workshop is actually part of a nationwide program of the Philippine Popmusic Foundation to promote and help preserve Philippine music through its search for the country’s top songwriters and interpreters. Nationally-acclaimed music artist Maestro Ryan Cayabyab was the main resource person of the workshop. Maestro Cayabyab explained the significance of the various motives and purposes of songwriting which could be a means of expressing love and socio-cultural sentiments of a given society or country in a given time in its history. “One may write a song to reflect one’s feelings towards the protection of environment as exemplified by some groups such as the groups called Asin and Smokey Mountains,” Maestro Cayabyab pointed out. “ Songs can also be vehicles for socio-political commentary and criticism for or against developments that may affect the welfare of the nation and its people. A very good example are the songs that helped rally for the unity of the Filipinos in their struggle for the restoration of freedom and liberty under what was believed to be a repressive martial law governance,” Professor Cayabyab illustrated one purpose of songwriting even as he thanked Benedicto College for hosting the Cebu component of the workshop. The workshop lasted until past five o’clock which also showcased three of the fourteen finalists in this years episode of the songwriting festival. Maestro Cayabyab also expressed his hope for Cebuano entries in the coming songwriting festivals as Cebuanos have the potentials getting into the top of any songwriting competition. Benedicto College Volume VI, No.1 November 2012 FEATURE ARTICLES Reprints from “The Modern Teachers Vol. XLI” THE HEALING POWER OF PETS Epifania N. Paloma Magallanes, Sorsogon G one are the days when animals were kept for entirely practical reasons. No longer do they just help us guard our houses, keep our food stores free of vermin or plow our fields. Around the globe, people of all ages now see these animals as companions, best friends even, who can be counted on to perk our day up. Some even argue that these adorable pets are in fact safeguarding our emotional well-being, mental health, and physical health. They are making our lives more productive, more useful, more enjoyable, and even longer. A recent study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found that the pet owners have reduced risk of cardiovascular disease compared to individuals who do not have pets. Not only did pet owners have lower blood pressures than the control group, but most of the 8,000 people studied had lower plasma cholesterol and triglycerides. That is not all. Another studied and monitored the blood pressure of individuals while petting a dog. Blood pressure climbed when the subjects talked to humans, but fell when they talked and petted a dog while speaking. A third study showed that heart attack victims who owned pets were 500 times less likely to have repeat heart attacks than those who did not own pets. Researchers have also found that having pets reduces the amount of medications dispensed to patients in hospitals by nearly onehalf over what patients without exposure to pets required. Pets offer their owners camaraderie, devotion, and security in a way that even human relationships cannot. Pets offer their love and affection unconditionally. There is no tension or judgment in maintaining a relationship with a pet, you are, in essence his idol. As the world seems to spin even faster, the simple act of taking time out to pet the dog or stroke the cat is highly therapeutic. After all, it is hard to stop and smell the roses when you do not have time to go out and plant the garden. A cat that comes and sits on your lap or computer keyboard and demands that you take a moment out of your day is worth her weight in gold. Why? Because you will have lower blood pressure as well as reduced cholesterol level, and you will be substantially less likely to end up seeing a doctor. Source: Woman Today, October 6,1999. Benedicto College Volume VI, No.1 November 2012 A TALE OF TWO STUDENTS Frances Mae Macapinig is a senior nursing student, shown above, who expects to graduate this schoolyear. She tells of efforts, working under pressure, hoping to survive the rigors , one hopeful of a nursing career goes through.. Ms. Macapinig believes surviving the rigors would invariably mean rewarding experience and sense of fulfillment. She described as generating the most satisfaction the sincere and strong commitment to the work that bring them in contact with people outside the academic classrooms; meaning dealing with hospital patients or clients in a community or public health projects. The pictures above show BC nursing students with clients in an out-of-school medical mission. Clint John Oyao is a senior marketing student of BC. Through his own initiatives, Oyao finds meaning for his volunteerism spirit nurtured by the education and training he got from Benedicto College in his being a volunteer worker for the Sugbu Study Center. Last summer, Oyao joined with student volunteers from the study centers of the country’s other major colleges and universities in a workcamp which was a 3-week outreach and leadership course, held in Naga City. The pictures above show Oyao conducting a tutorial session with some students of Camarines Sur National High School, one activity in a workcamp. The workcamp was jointly organized by different student study centers of such schools as UP Dilliman, University of Asia and the Pacific, DLSU, UST, UP Cebu, USC, USJ-R, Ateneo de Naga and Benedicto College.
