MONDAY
French Style Mac & Cheese
Yes, you can take this class again! This is some really good stuff! You
might never go back to regular mac and cheese. Come and find out the
secret ingredient that makes it so yummy. After taking this class you
will be able to make it yourself, with no help from mom and dad!

Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a style of urban dancing that focuses on precise, fluid
movements and high-energy performance. In this class you will
learn footwork, isolations, coordination, flexibility, and stamina.
You will practice popular moves such as the D-Low Shuffle and the
Whip while developing a sense of rhythm. Are you ready to
become an amazing dancer? No class Feb. 18

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies
Learn to prepare some of the best cookies you have ever eaten in your life without paying a
fortune. And yes, they are as good as the ones at the bakery! Instructor: Mary Duffy.

Knitting
Students will learn the basics of knitting: how to cast on and bind off,
how to do basic knit and purl stitches, and how to read easy patterns.
We'll start with small squares to practice, and then students can choose a
simple scarf or cowl to make for themselves or a friend. Knitting is a
wonderful, creative activity that builds focus, patience, and fine motor
coordination. Once you've mastered the basics, there is a world of

“News of Now,” The Lake Harriet Online Student Newspaper
Creative writers, journalists, and artists, grades 4-8, are invited to create News
of Now, from the LH Middle. This quarterly newspaper publishes
students' articles, stories (true or fiction), poetry, opinions, photographs,
drawings, and cartoons! News of Now, part of the “Connection,” is
created by students, for students. It will be available through a link on
the LHCS website. New students are welcome. Facilitator Elissa Cottle
is a parent, journalist and poet! No class Jan. 18 and Feb. 15

Musical Theater Dance
Pretend that you’re a superstar on Broadway as we dance, act out, and sing along to popular
show tunes along with some of your favorite songs. Students are invited to bring their own CD's,
phones or iPods to class. We will choreograph and perform musical theater songs and pop songs
like they do in music videos! This will be a fun, engaging, active class that builds skills and sets
imagination free. No class Feb. 15

Valentine Chocolate Lover’s Dream
Whip up a batch of delicious chocolate candy to give to that special someone or
just to treat yourself. If you like chocolate, you’ll love this class! Parents are invited
to help. 12 students only

TUESDAY
Exploring Coding through Games
Explore coding and computers through popular games such as Flappy
Bird! We will look inside games you know, at the code it took to create
them, and learn how to change the code yourself.
You will use a program called Scratch to invent a new game of your own.
Learn the building blocks to coding and programming through this computer science class.

T-Shirt Decorating
Design and paint the T-Shirt of your dreams! We will use stencils, fabric paints, and
your own creativity. T-Shirts are supplied by the instructor. Please let us know
what size you want by indicating it on the after-school registration form or by
calling the Lake Harriet Community Education office at 612-668-3330.

WEDNESDAY
Art Club
Grab a friend and come have fun at Art Club! We'll work on a variety of
projects with paint, drawing, pastels, posters, mosaics, and anything else
that inspires your creativity. Get experience working with different materials
and learn new techniques for expressing yourself!

Earring Making
Learn how to make beautiful earrings for yourself or your friends! We will use beading,
rhinestones, charms, and more as you learn a fun new skill. (These earrings are for pierced
ears, they are not clip-ons.) Instructor: Tarneka

French: Salut mes amis!
Kiki has traveled the world over, and this is her second year at Lake Harriet.
Kiki says; “Please come and join me as we learn French in a fun way
through games, songs, and role play. For example, review French words for
your clothing and then compete in teams to name them and put them all
on before the timer runs out. Or, learn how to ask for your favorite foods
in our classroom restaurant! Let’s have some FUN!! À bientôt!” New and

FRIDAY
Babysitting Club
Get certified by the American Red Cross to be a babysitter through this 6 hour course. Learn basic
safety and first aid skills, child development, and how to interview the family to see if the job is the
right one for you. Learn how to handle emergencies, change diapers, discipline, and
the importance of role modeling. You will make a resume, create a babysitter kit, and
become aware of your strengths as you take on the responsibility of caring for small
children. By the end of this course, you will be a confident and responsible babysitter.
Upon completion, students will be awarded an American Red Cross Babysitting
Certificate. Important: Please bring a lunch to eat with something to drink.

Chess Club

All Saturday dance classes are held at Linden Hills Park (43rd & Xerxes Ave. So.)
Dance & Music For Parents & Tots (Ages 2-3)
Parents and children will have fun exploring the different ways you can move your body to musical
rhythms. Class will help in the development of coordination, motor skills, and the use of imagination.

Creative Dance, Movement & Stories – (Ages 3 ½ - 4 ½)
This class is a great introduction to dance, movement and imagination. Focus is on exploring various
ways to move your body to music. Dance movements will be explored using children's stories.

Dance: Ballet, Hip Hop & Modern Dance Foundations & Imagination (Ages 5-6)
Class features the foundations of ballet, hip hop and modern dance. Class ends with a performance. No

Minneapolis Community Education After School Program Policies
After School Behavior Policy
All children participating in the after school program are expected to follow the rules for
behavior when in class or on the bus. All students are given three chances. First referral, we
will speak to student. Second referral, we will talk to student along with a call to the
parent/guardian. Third referral, they will be removed from the program or bus depending on
reason for referrals. Depending on the reason for referral, a student may receive two or three
strikes on the first referral.
After School Activities Cancellation Policy
In the event of inclement or severe weather, the district will decide whether to cancel after school
programs. In the event of cancellations, the Transportation Department notifies school and
school/program coordinators. ALL schools will be notified of closure by 12 pm (noon) on the day of
the event. For up-to-the-minute school closing and cancellations information, please watch WCCO
TV or listen to radio station 830AM WCCO. If you have internet access, you can check the district
web site at www.mpls.k12.mn.us We will make every effort to contact you if after school activities
are cancelled. Please make sure all your contact information is up to date with our office.
*When after school classes are cancelled, your child will be sent home on their regular bus at
4:10 p.m.
Photo and Media and Survey Release for Youth Under 18This section must be completed to be
registered for classes. Participants have the right to change their consent by sending a written
request to the program manager for the program they are participating in.
