RABI FERTILIZER SITUATION: MID FEBRUARY 2013
Executive Summary
1.
SUPPLY/DEMAND SITUATION
1.1
Fertilizer Offtake during January 2013
The provisional data reveal that the total nutrient offtake during January 2013 was about 293
thousand tonnes compared to 309 thousand tonnes during January 2012, showing a decrease of
5.4 per cent. Nitrogen offtake was 260 thousand tonnes which decreased by 10.9 percent
whereas phosphate and potash offtake was 32.0 and 1.0 thousand tonnes which increased by
91.0 and 5.0 per cent, respectively over January 2012. In fertilizer product terms, urea offtake
during January 2013 was 517 thousand tonnes, which witnessed a downward trend of 15.2 per
cent and DAP offtake was 53 thousand tonnes, which registered an increase of 165.4 per cent as
compared to January 2012.

Fertilizer offtake during Rabi 2012-13 (October-January)
Total fertilizer nutrient offtake during Rabi 2012-13 (October-January) was about 1,488
thousand tonnes, which decreased by 1.1 per cent compared with same timeframe of last Rabi
2011-12. Offtake of nitrogen, decreased by 6.8 percent, whereas phosphate and potash offtake
increased by 23.9 and 4.3 per cent respectively as compared to Rabi 2011-12. In product terms,
urea offtake was 2031 thousand tonnes during Rabi 2012-13 (Oct-Jan) which decreased by 11.4
per cent while DAP offtake was 612 thousand tonnes which increased by 21.5 per cent over
same time frame of Rabi 2011-12.

Fertilizer Production and Imported Supplies
Total production of all fertilizer products during January 2013 was about 476 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, urea was 339 thousand tonnes, which is 71.2 per cent of the total production. DAP
production was 58 thousand tonnes which shares 12.3 per cent of the total production. The other
products were CAN 39 thousand tonnes, Nitrophos 30 thousand tonnes and SSP 6 thousand
tonnes. Imported supplies were 46 thousand tonnes which includes 44 thousand tonnes DAP and
2.2 thousand tonnes of SOP during January 2013.

PRICE TREND
Domestic:
Prices of urea (Sona) increased by 1.8 per cent during January 2013 whereas
that of urea (tara) increased by 1.6 per cent (Table 6) respectively. The price of SSP (G)
decreased by 2.5 percent as compared to December 2012. The price of DAP and other fertilizers
remain stable with minor fluctuation during January 2013.
International: The prices Fob bulk yuzhny urea fluctuated from US $ 375 to 405/t (Table 7).
FOB Prilled bulk Middle East price was quoted at US $ 395 to 412/ton. DAP prices in US Gulf
were quoted around US $ 455-475/ton fob bulk. MAP and SOP prices were recorded in the
range of US $ 480-510 and 595-600/ton, respectively during January, 2013. Ex-Karachi price of
urea was in the range of Rs.2593 to Rs. 2977 per 50 kg bag, while Ex-Karachi price of DAP was
in the range of Rs.3308 to Rs. 3752 per 50 kg bag.

OUTLOOK FOR RABI 2012-13
During Rabi 2012-13, total availability of urea is estimated to be around 3,037 thousand tones.
This includes 302 thousand tonnes of imported supplies, 2,051 thousand tonnes of domestic
production and 684 thousand tonnes of opening inventory. The estimated offtake during Rabi
2012-13 is expected to be 2,831 thousand tonnes leaving behind 196 thousand tonnes of opening
balance for coming Kharif 2013.
As regards DAP total availability is estimated around 938 thousand tonnes during Rabi 2012-13.
This includes 227 thousand tonnes of opening stock, 327 thousand tonnes of imported supplies
and 384 thousand tonnes of domestic production. The estimated offtake of DAP would be 702
thousand tonnes, leaving a closing balance of 230 thousand tonnes.

INTRODUCTION
This note reviews the product-wise and nutrient-wise fertilizer supply/demand situation during
January 2013, the 4th month of Rabi 2012-13 season, and presents an outlook for the remaining
two months in respect of urea and DAP. It includes the average domestic retail and international
prices of fertilizer products, namely urea, DAP, TSP, MAP and SOP. A brief weather situation
during the month has also been given.
2.
FERTILIZER OFFTAKE DURING JANUARY, 2013
Total nutrient offtake during January 2013 was about 293 thousand tonnes, which decreased by
5.4 per cent over January 2012. The offtake of nitrogen was about 260 thousand tonnes, which
decreased by 10.9 per cent over January 2012. Phosphate offtake was about 32 thousand tonnes,
which increased by 91.0 per cent. Potash offtake also witnessed an increase of 5.0 per cent. In
product terms, urea offtake was 517 thousand tonnes, witnessing a decrease of 15.2 per cent.
Offtake of DAP was about 53 thousand tonnes, which increased by 165.4 per cent over January
2012 (Table 1).

CUMULATIVE FERTILIZER OFFTAKE DURING RABI 2012-13
(OCTOBER 2012 – JANUARY 2013)
Aggregated data in Table 2 reveal that the cumulative fertilizer nutrient offtake during October,
2012 to January 2013, was 1,488 thousand tonnes showing a decrease of 1.1 per cent over the

same timeframe of last Rabi 2011-12. Out of total offtake, nitrogen was 1,136 thousand tonnes,
(-6.8 per cent). Phosphate 345 thousand tonnes (+23.9 per cent) and potash 8 thousand tonnes
(+4.3 per cent) Table 2.
Data in Table 2 also indicate that urea and DAP offtake was 2,031 thousand tonnes (-11.4 per
cent) and 612 thousand tonnes (+21.5 per cent over same time frame of Rabi 2011-12).

FERTILIZER PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS
About 476 thousand tonnes of different fertilizer products were produced in the country during
January 2013. Out of this urea production was 339 thousand tonnes, which is 71.2 per cent of
the total production. Other produced were: DAP 58, Nitrophos 30, CAN 39 and SSP 6 thousand
tonnes. About 4 thousand tonnes of different blends of NPKs were also produced. About 44
thousand tonnes of DAP and 2.2 thousand tonnes of SOP were supplied through imports during
January, 2013 (Table 3).

PROVINCE-WISE UREA AND DAP OFFTAKE DURING JANUARY, 2013
Urea offtake in Punjab increased by 2.7 percent whereas in Sindh, KPK and Balochistan its
offtake was decreased by 54.3, 35.3 and 44.2 percent respectively as compared to January 2012.

DAP offtake was increased in Punjab, Sindh, KPK and Balochistan by 101.2, 33.7, 14.3 and
112.1 percent respectively over January 2012 (Table 4).

SUPPLY/DEMAND SITUATION DURING JANUARY 2013

Urea
Total urea availability during January 2013 was about 773 thousand tonnes, including an
opening balance of 434 thousand tonnes and domestic production of 339 thousand tonnes (Table
5). Urea offtake during January 2013 was 517 thousand tonnes. The closing balance at the end
of January 2013 was 256 thousand tones.

DAP
Total DAP availability was 258 thousand tonnes during the month under review. It comprised
156 thousand tonnes of opening balance, 44 thousand tonnes imported supplies and 58 thousand
tonnes of domestic production (Table 5). DAP offtake was about 53 thousand tonnes. The
closing balance works out to be 198 thousand tonnes.

OUTLOOK FOR RABI 2012-13
During Rabi 2012-13, total 3,037 thousand tonnes of urea (estimated) would be available. This
includes 302 thousand tonnes imported supplies, 2,051 thousand tonnes of domestic production
and 684 thousand tonnes of opening inventory. The estimated offtake during the season would
be around 2,831 thousand tonnes leaving behind 196 thousand tonnes of estimated balance
(Table 5) for coming Kharif 2013.
As regards DAP, 327 thousand tonnes would be supplied through imports. The domestic
production of DAP during the current season would be 384 thousand tonnes and opening
inventory was 227 thousand tonnes making total availability of 938 thousand tonnes. The
estimated offtake would be around 702 thousand tonnes. The estimated opening inventory of
DAP for next season would be around 230 thousand tonnes.

FERTILIZER PRICES
8.1
Domestic fertilizer prices during January 2013
Average fertilizer market prices in the country during January 2013 are presented in Table 6.
The prices of urea (sona), urea (tara) increased by 1.8 per cent and 1.6 per cent, over last month
prices while price of SSP (G) decreased by 2.5 percent and DAP 0.4 per cent over December
2012 prices. The price of all other fertilizers remained stable with minor fluctuation during the
month under review.

International prices during January 2013
The prices of Fob bulk yuzhny urea fluctuated from US $ 375 to 405/t (Table 7). FOB Prilled

WEATHER SITUATION DURING JANUARY 2013
Three westerly waves passed across the country during the month. Due to which light to
moderate rain with snowfall over hills has been reported from the agricultural plains of Punjab,
Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, KPK and northwest Balochistan. Mostly dry weather/meager rain has
been reported from agricultural plains of Sindh during the month.
