Congratulations to our students that participated in co-curricular activities and their recent successes!
Tony Serratore
Students from Art, Special Olympics Bowling, BPA, Chess, DECA, Group Interpretation, ICTM Regional Math Contest, IHSA State Debate,
IMEA, Scholastic Bowl, TV Crew and WYSE enjoyed a breakfast with our Principal in April to recognize their success. In addition to their
classes, these students go the extra mile after school to compete in these activities. We are very proud of the accomplishments these
students have earned. A complete list of students that were recognized (including those not pictured) is on page 8.

Annual College and
Career Fair
Dear Andrew High School Community,
The month of May brings us the conclusion of another outstanding school year. This
year has been one with many changes that we all, staff, students and families alike,
have had to adjust to. A changing schedule due to the adoption of Common Core
Standards for Freshman, piloting our next generation assessments (PARCC), and, as
always, transitioning their final month of high school for our Class of 2014. They
have achieved incredible things and May always brings closure and celebration of
our seniors. We must also say goodbye to several teaching and support staff
members who dedicated well over a century to the Andrew community including
John Wagner (English), Nancy Steineke (English), Alice Murphy (Guidance), Roxiana
Migler (Food Service), and Rich Piatchek (Athletics). We wish them all the best of
luck on their future endeavors.
More than 80 colleges, universities, career schools, and
members of the military were on campus on March 20 as
part of the Annual College & Career Fair and Assembly.
The entire junior class had an opportunity to visit with
representatives from these institutions as they continue
to plan for after high school. Students also attended an
assembly to hear from a judge, a state's attorney, and a
college admissions representative, who talked about
what pitfalls to avoid in order to be seen as desirable
by prospective schools and future employers.
Graduation on May 21st marks the final event for the Class of 2014 as they transition
from students to alumni. This year’s seniors created the theme “See the Lightning,
Be the Thunder” to encourage all our students to not just be spectators to the great
things our students are doing in the classroom, in athletics, and in activities/fine arts,
but to be a part of it. Because of the energy created due to the senior theme, we
continue to have outstanding student participation in all programs, far surpassing
other schools in our area and the state. The seniors have truly made their mark
on Andrew, and I know that they will consider themselves T-Bolts forever!
There are several other exciting events in May for all our students. The beginning
of May marks the start of AP testing, which impacts hundreds of Andrew students
who are striving for excellence. Last year, our students placed Andrew in Newsweek
Magazine’s “Outstanding Schools” list and, with this year’s numbers in, we will stay
on that list. The week of May 5th marks Andrewfest, which culminates a week of fun
and celebration concluding with our annual Andrewfest assembly for students on
May 9th. The celebration includes fun games for students and staff, recognition of
a year’s worth of group and individual successes, and, if past assemblies hold true,
maybe a guest appearance. We also celebrate our 9th annual St. Baldrick’s Shaving.
Our shavees are hard at work raising money with the goal of $12,000 for our school.
Additionally, May 9th marks our annual Relay for Life where thousands of VJA and
District 230 students and staff raise money for cancer research. The event takes place
at Sandburg High School. District 230 has received national awards for its efforts
and has been recognized as the top fundraiser of all high school events in the
country for the third straight year – annually netting almost $400,000!
In late April, we also celebrated the achievement of our 1st place in Class A World
Champion Percussion Team. We will hold an assembly in early May to honor the
champions and celebrate together as a school. This is an amazing recognition after
several years of winning silver; our team brought home the Gold! Congratulations
to our champions and music department on this great victory.
Although all our co-curricular and athletic programs are wrapping up in May, it is too
hard to predict how teams will finish. We wish all our athletes and those competing
at academic competitions the very best.
May continues to be a month filled with celebration. We host a very special event
that recognizes students for academic, athletic, community service or fine arts
achievements with scholarships. What makes this night even more special is that
these scholarships are derived by the outstanding support Andrew receives from
community and corporate partners. We also receive support from stakeholder
groups like our Athletic Boosters, Music Parents Organization, the new T-Bolt
Pride Parent Organization, and teacher/administration organizations.

A ‘Final’ Piece of the Pi
With the last newsletter of the year, we take
a moment to reflect on the past 8 months,
examine the remaining month and look
toward the next school year. State
qualifiers, conference champions, all-area
players, exciting wins, heart-breaking
losses, upset victories, and crushing defeats
were just a few of the memories that will
linger when one reflects upon the past
athletic year.
We are proud of the academic success of all
of our athletes. At award ceremonies this
spring, the booster club will award 234
athletes Scholar-Athlete Certificates
for having an accumulative GPA of 3.5
or greater. 135 Athletes received this
award in winter ceremonies and 226
also were recipients in the fall – a total
of 343 different students received this
award. Additionally, 70 seniors will
receive a SWSC Scholar-Athlete pin
at the senior athletic breakfast on
May 16 for maintaining a 3.5 GPA
and being involved in a varsity sport
during their senior year. Finally, we
will recognize 84 athletes who
participated in three sports during this
school year, including the largest
group ever of 3-sport seniors, with 20.
This is quite an accomplishment in
light of the time commitment to their
sports, combined with the rigors of
academics. These athletes will
receive 3-sport patches at their
spring sport ceremonies.
But the season is not over for all of
our teams. The final month of the
year is filled with the excitement of
the conference meet and the state
tournament.
There are a number of events to look
forward to in May. Pom pons will have a
workshop and tryout for their fall teams on
May 12, 13 & 15 in the dance studio.
Cheerleaders will have their tryouts for the
fall teams on April 29, 30 and May 1 in the
cheer area. Softball will host the IHSA
Sectional tournament on June 3, 4 and 7
while the baseball team will host the IHSA
Sectional tournament on June 4, 5 and 7.
As we look to the fall, we realize that it is not
that far away. Summer camps will begin in
early June and last until the end of July.
For registration information, please
visit the summer camp website at
https://andrew.8to18.com. Registration
is available online through this website
in June.
REMINDER: ALL FALL SPORTS WILL
BEGIN PRACTICES IN AUGUST.
FOOTBALL WILL HAVE THEIR 1ST
PRACTICE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 11
AND ALL OTHER SPORTS WILL BEGIN
ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13.
Andrew’s most outstanding AD
Please remember that athletes need a new
physical every 13 months to participate in
tryouts or practices. Consult the athletic
website at www.athletics2000.com/andrew
for the starting times and places for the fall
sports.
The https://andrew.8to18.com website will
be the place to sign up all athletes for all
sports. We no longer have paper forms
for sport registration – only by computer
registration. Physical forms are available
at school or the athletic website at
www.athletics2000.com/andrew, or the
registration website at
https://andrew.8to18.com. Freshmen can
use their entering school physical for
athletics. The only form that needs to be
turned in is a new physical for non-freshmen
athletes. This can be turned in during the
summer at the main south desk, or anytime
before the start of the sport season.

Announces Illinois State Scholars
The Illinois State Scholar Program recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement.
State scholar designation provides honorary recognition to approximately the top ten percent
of graduates from Illinois high schools each year. This year’s Scholars are:
We would like to again say thank you to all
of the athletes and parents for another
exciting and successful year. A big thank
you goes to the athletic booster club
for their tireless work in aiding the
financial betterment of the athletic
department. We could not have all
of the things that we have without
their generous time and talents.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the
athletes, parents, and coaches for all
of their support for me and my family
over the past 17 years as the athletic
director of this school. When this
position opened up I knew that it
would be a great place for me and
my family. When we moved here 16
years ago I did not realize the
tremendous community that Tinley
Park, Orland Hills and Orland Park
would be for us. It has been a great
run and I am proud to have been
able to be here as a small part in the
development of the athletes and
coaches. I am a better person for
being able to be a part of the Andrew
Community. I never looked at my
position as being a job, and will
always remember the people and the
events that have been an integral
part of my life and my families’ life
these past 17 years. I worked at 4 schools
in my 39 years in education, and each one
shaped my life a little, but none more that
this school and this community. Thank you
all again for making my time here so special.
I will always be a T-Bolt!! I know that my
successor, Mike Dwyer, will do some great
things for the school as he has a great spirit
and soul. We plan to continue to live in the
community and will look forward to being
T-Bolt fans for a long time. Good luck and
thank you.

Principal’s Message
continued from previous page
Finally, in March we asked you all to participate in an annual Parent Survey. We had 291 households participate
and received outstanding feedback. Areas that we considered as areas of strength (90%+ positive rating) were –
school safety, respectful behaviors, positive student experiences in co-curriculars, graduation requirements, and
assistance with EPAS (ACT). Additionally, academic areas that parents felt their students were appropriately
challenged were Business, Family & Consumer Sciences, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages.
Regarding those areas where Andrew needs to continue to focus (below 80% positive rating) were awareness of
college/career pathways, awareness of student assistance coordinator services, and dual credit. Based on your
feedback, an academic area that could be more challenging is Art. Thank you to all that participated and know
that we will take this input as we plan for the future.
Congratulations on graduation and wishing all a happy end to a great school year!

PSAT For Juniors
Selective Service
Scholarships
Juniors who may qualify as national merit
finalists, and those interested in attending
highly selective colleges or colleges on the
east or west coast, should plan to take the
SAT college entrance exam next spring, and
should also take the PSAT test in October.
The PSAT test also serves as the qualifying
test for the National Merit Program.
Students should register for the exam
at www.collegeboard.org/school by
June 15, 2014.
Federal law requires all male students to
register with the Selective Service System
when they turn 18. Registration takes place
by filling out the appropriate form at the
Post Office. Those who do not register face
fines or jail and are not eligible for student
financial aid.
The deadline for most of the Honors Night
scholarships may have passed but additional
applications continue to arrive in the Guidance
Office. We encourage seniors to stop in and
check out the scholarship file in Guidance
for newly arrived scholarship applications.
It may not be too late to earn additional
money based on excellent achievement in
high school. Scholarships are also listed
on the Guidance website.
Interested sophomore students may sign
up for this test but their results will not enter
them into the National Merit competition.
PSAT ACCOMODATIONS
You can request accommodations by going

National Defense
Authorization Act
This act allows military representatives to
ask for unedited lists of juniors and seniors.
The school will provide student directory
information unless parents send a letter to
the Guidance Office indicating that they do
not want their child’s name and directory
information provided to military recruiters.
Homework For College
Bound Juniors
Choosing A Career
If they have not already done so, this is the
summer when college-bound juniors should
be narrowing their college choices. Summer
is a great time to visit campuses in order to
talk to college representatives. Many families
plan vacations based on possible college
choices. Remember to call ahead or go
on-line to arrange a tour and an interview so
that you can get the most out of your visit.
Counselors encourage students to go
online to use the college and career search
information that is available for all Andrew
families through “Career Cruising.” This
program has an incredible amount of
information about a wide variety of careers
and training institutions. Many students
already know how to access Career Cruising,
but those who are unsure should talk to their
Guidance Counselor.
For Seniors Only
Since colleges require student immunization
information, families sometimes request a
copy of their child’s high school health record
from our school nurse. Since the Nurse’s
Office at Andrew is closed over the summer,
parents are advised to make this request
prior to graduation.
Final Senior Transcript
Most colleges ask for a final high school
transcript. There is no charge for this
transcript. The final transcript will be mailed
to the college that the student indicates on
his or her final clearance sheet. Seniors turn
in their clearance sheet on the last day of
school.
Summer School
Summer school registration for the second
semester of summer school continues
through early June. We encourage students
to sign up as soon as possible in order to
guarantee a spot in one of the courses that
will be offered. Courses may be cancelled
before the deadline due to low enrollment.
Please do not wait to sign up! Summer
school registration information and enrollment forms are available in the Guidance
Office and at the district website.
Guidance Summer Hours
The Guidance Office is open throughout the summer
in a limited capacity. Counselors are available by
appointment only as their schedules are very limited.

of the team! See you next year!
Student Council
Student Council has had a busy second semester.
Andrew joined Sandburg’s student council to sponsor
a "Fill the field" fundraiser at the Varsity baseball game.
Proceeds from t-shirts and food donations collected
benefited Together We Cope food pantry in Tinley Park.
They followed the event with a school wide food drive
from April 7 - 17. Even with all of these activities, Student
Council found a way to squeeze in one more. They hosted
their third annual Dodgeball tournament. All proceeds
are donated to Relay for Life, and this year, the winning
student team faced off in the D230 Showdown. Stay tuned
next month for the results!.

Locker Cleanup
Locker Security
ALL students will be expected to clear
ALL items from their lockers at the end of
the 2013-2014 school year. Maintenance
and cleaning will be done to hall lockers
during the summer, so any items
remaining after the last day of school will
be removed. As a reminder, students
are expected to maintain a healthy and
secure hall locker while at Andrew High
School.
As a way to continue to promote a safe and secure school environment,
the Andrew High School Deans’ Office has discussed with students the
importance of securely locking up their belongings in their own hall, PE,

belongings means to not preset locker combinations, to not share

belongings securely locked in their hall locker until their class or athletic

Please encourage your student to securely lock up their personal
belongings at all times while at school.

Spring Sports Physicals
As we begin to wind down the school year,
it is a good idea to start thinking ahead to
next year. If your student plans on participating in sports for next school year, they
are required by the IHSA to undergo a
sports physical. We plan on hosting our first
Spring Sports Physicals here at Andrew on
Friday, May 23rd. Physicals will cost $20.
Dr. Dore DeBartolo will be present to
conduct the physicals, with help from our
EMT students. Physicals start at 4:00pm
and will last till 7:00pm. All physicals will
take place in the Andrew Athletic Training
Room. Please contact Phil Dryer at either

reserve a spot today!
Andrew’s National Honor
Society has been in full bloom
ever since they arrived back from
winter break. Back in December,
they visited Providence Healthcare
and Rehabilitation Center in Palos
Heights for its annual Christmas
event. This year members of NHS
enjoyed the trip so much that they
decided to return on March 1st where seventeen
members came back to Providence bearing gifts
for the residents. Once again, Andrew’s NHS successfully brought smiles, laughter, and warm company to the residents of Providence, leaving there
with more wisdom and unforgettable memories.
The residents cannot wait until Andrew visits them
again. With present office-holders Kevin Sivak,
Ashlee Renich-Malek, Yee Mon Han, Conor Yerkes,
Jeanine Murrar, Simrat Dhaliwal, and Jacqueline
Calderon retiring after an exhaustive but successful
reign of leadership, it was time to pass the torch to
next year’s executive board.

As the end of the school year approaches, NHS will
continue to work dedicatedly for the school at

the children of Joliet’s Daybreak Center, which
operates 24 hours a day and provides housing to
single mothers and young children victimized by battery and other
abusive behavior. NHS students surprised the center’s youth with
Easter baskets stocked with coloring books, small toys, crayons and
other exciting crafts that anyone with a creative imagination could
ask for. The school year for NHS is never considered to be over.
During elections, candidates brought forth a few new ideas of what
to expect for the upcoming semesters at Andrew. One contestant
exemplified the importance of providing a system of friendship
towards the residents at Providence. This buddy-system would
consist of acquiring a regulatory relationship with a senior citizen
residing at the facility. Another candidate delivered the good intentions
of reading to young children at the Tinley Park Public Library. It is
quite clear that Andrew’s National Honor Society will always strive
dedicatedly toward a progressively improving community.

Mark your calendars and hide your daughters!
The Man Choir Event will take place May 1st at 7pm in the

by The Rolling Stones, Lorde, Ben Folds, Stevie Wonder,

the theater into a pop/rock venue! Admission is free and
open to the public. See you there!

Locker Cleanup
Locker Security
ALL students will be expected to clear
ALL items from their lockers at the end of
the 2013-2014 school year. Maintenance
and cleaning will be done to hall lockers
during the summer, so any items
remaining after the last day of school will
be removed. As a reminder, students
are expected to maintain a healthy and
secure hall locker while at Andrew High
School.
As a way to continue to promote a safe and secure school environment,
the Andrew High School Deans’ Office has discussed with students the
importance of securely locking up their belongings in their own hall, PE,
or athletic lockers, before, during, and after school. To securely lock up
belongings means to not preset locker combinations, to not share
lockers with friends, and to make sure no belongings are left out of
a locker when leaving a location. If students feel they do not have
enough room in their PE/Athletic locker, then students should keep their
belongings securely locked in their hall locker until their class or athletic
activity is completed. At night, security personnel are located at the
main south entrance, and they are always willing to help students gain
access to their hall locker if necessary. At no time should items be
left unlocked, or sitting on benches in the locker room, while an
athlete or student is participating in their activity.
Please encourage your student to securely lock up their personal
belongings at all times while at school.

PSAT For Juniors
Selective Service
Scholarships
Juniors who may qualify as national merit
finalists, and those interested in attending
highly selective colleges or colleges on the
east or west coast, should plan to take the
SAT college entrance exam next spring, and
should also take the PSAT test in October.
The PSAT test also serves as the qualifying
test for the National Merit Program.
Students should register for the exam
at www.collegeboard.org/school by
June 15, 2014.
Federal law requires all male students to
register with the Selective Service System
when they turn 18. Registration takes place
by filling out the appropriate form at the
Post Office. Those who do not register face
fines or jail and are not eligible for student
financial aid.
The deadline for most of the Honors Night
scholarships may have passed but additional
applications continue to arrive in the Guidance
Office. We encourage seniors to stop in and
check out the scholarship file in Guidance
for newly arrived scholarship applications.
It may not be too late to earn additional
money based on excellent achievement in
high school. Scholarships are also listed
on the Guidance website.
Interested sophomore students may sign
up for this test but their results will not enter
them into the National Merit competition.

Homework For College
Bound Juniors
Choosing A Career
If they have not already done so, this is the
summer when college-bound juniors should
be narrowing their college choices. Summer
is a great time to visit campuses in order to
talk to college representatives. Many families
plan vacations based on possible college
choices. Remember to call ahead or go
on-line to arrange a tour and an interview so
that you can get the most out of your visit.
Counselors encourage students to go
online to use the college and career search
information that is available for all Andrew
families through “Career Cruising.” This
program has an incredible amount of
information about a wide variety of careers
and training institutions. Many students
already know how to access Career Cruising,
but those who are unsure should talk to their
Guidance Counselor.
For Seniors Only
Since colleges require student immunization
information, families sometimes request a
copy of their child’s high school health record
from our school nurse. Since the Nurse’s
Office at Andrew is closed over the summer,
parents are advised to make this request
prior to graduation.
Final Senior Transcript
Most colleges ask for a final high school
transcript. There is no charge for this
transcript. The final transcript will be mailed
to the college that the student indicates on
his or her final clearance sheet. Seniors turn
in their clearance sheet on the last day of
school.
Summer School
Summer school registration for the second
semester of summer school continues
through early June. We encourage students
to sign up as soon as possible in order to
guarantee a spot in one of the courses that
will be offered. Courses may be cancelled
before the deadline due to low enrollment.
Please do not wait to sign up! Summer
school registration information and enrollment forms are available in the Guidance

Student Council
Student Council has had a busy second semester.
Andrew joined Sandburg’s student council to sponsor
a "Fill the field" fundraiser at the Varsity baseball game.
Proceeds from t-shirts and food donations collected

their third annual Dodgeball tournament. All proceeds
are donated to Relay for Life, and this year, the winning
student team faced off in the D230 Showdown. Stay tuned
next month for the results!.

at the senior athletic breakfast on
May 16 for maintaining a 3.5 GPA
and being involved in a varsity sport
during their senior year. Finally, we
will recognize 84 athletes who
participated in three sports during this
school year, including the largest
group ever of 3-sport seniors, with 20.
This is quite an accomplishment in
light of the time commitment to their
sports, combined with the rigors of
academics. These athletes will
receive 3-sport patches at their
spring sport ceremonies.
But the season is not over for all of
our teams. The final month of the
year is filled with the excitement of
the conference meet and the state
tournament.
There are a number of events to look
forward to in May. Pom pons will have a
workshop and tryout for their fall teams on
May 12, 13 & 15 in the dance studio.
Cheerleaders will have their tryouts for the
fall teams on April 29, 30 and May 1 in the
cheer area. Softball will host the IHSA
Sectional tournament on June 3, 4 and 7
while the baseball team will host the IHSA
Sectional tournament on June 4, 5 and 7.
As we look to the fall, we realize that it is not
that far away. Summer camps will begin in
early June and last until the end of July.
For registration information, please
visit the summer camp website at
https://andrew.8to18.com. Registration
is available online through this website
in June.
REMINDER: ALL FALL SPORTS WILL

FOOTBALL WILL HAVE THEIR 1ST
PRACTICE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 11
AND ALL OTHER SPORTS WILL BEGIN
ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13.

Please remember that athletes need a new
physical every 13 months to participate in
tryouts or practices. Consult the athletic
website at www.athletics2000.com/andrew
for the starting times and places for the fall
sports.
The https://andrew.8to18.com website will
be the place to sign up all athletes for all
sports. We no longer have paper forms
for sport registration – only by computer
registration. Physical forms are available
at school or the athletic website at
www.athletics2000.com/andrew, or the
registration website at
https://andrew.8to18.com. Freshmen can
use their entering school physical for
athletics. The only form that needs to be
turned in is a new physical for non-freshmen
athletes. This can be turned in during the
summer at the main south desk, or anytime
before the start of the sport season.

Announces Illinois State Scholars
The Illinois State Scholar Program recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement.
State scholar designation provides honorary recognition to approximately the top ten percent
of graduates from Illinois high schools each year. This year’s Scholars are:
We would like to again say thank you to all
of the athletes and parents for another
exciting and successful year. A big thank
you goes to the athletic booster club
for their tireless work in aiding the
financial betterment of the athletic
department. We could not have all
of the things that we have without
their generous time and talents.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the
athletes, parents, and coaches for all
of their support for me and my family
over the past 17 years as the athletic
director of this school. When this
position opened up I knew that it
would be a great place for me and
my family. When we moved here 16
years ago I did not realize the
tremendous community that Tinley
Park, Orland Hills and Orland Park
would be for us. It has been a great
run and I am proud to have been
able to be here as a small part in the
development of the athletes and
coaches. I am a better person for
being able to be a part of the Andrew
Community. I never looked at my
position as being a job, and will
always remember the people and the
events that have been an integral
part of my life and my families’ life
these past 17 years. I worked at 4 schools
in my 39 years in education, and each one
shaped my life a little, but none more that
this school and this community. Thank you
all again for making my time here so special.
I will always be a T-Bolt!! I know that my
successor, Mike Dwyer, will do some great
things for the school as he has a great spirit
and soul. We plan to continue to live in the
community and will look forward to being
T-Bolt fans for a long time. Good luck and
thank you.
