ANDREW HAMMOND’S VISIT TO THE WILLIAM ALLITT SCHOOL 15 DECEMBER 2011 Whoever said the book was dead would have been pleasantly surprised on 15 December 2011 when author Andrew Hammond visited The William Allitt School. Andrew gave three very animated, entertaining and sometimes scary talks to our Year 7, 8 and 9 students to publicize his new book “The Gallows Curse”. What can only be described as huge crowds of our students were given the chance to meet and chat to Andrew at break time whilst having their books signed. Another huge queue formed round the Library and outside the building at lunchtime as students eagerly awaited Andrew’s return and the opportunity to purchase their own copy of his book and get it signed. Within a few minutes of opening the Library was packed with hundreds of students eagerly awaiting their opportunity to speak with the Andrew, who just happens to have a famous brother called Richard. After a very short break Andrew returned to work with some of our Year 9 and Year 10 students on a creative writing task. The session was thoroughly enjoyed by our students who were keen to complete their own ghost stories in their next English lesson. After a hugely successful day Andrew tweeted “Awesome day at William Allitt School today. What a great bunch – thanks guys for making me so welcome. I shall be back.” Our students eagerly await Andrew’s return. Many are devouring his book, using every opportunity to catch a few spare minutes to read the gripping story, whether under desks in lessons or in the Library at break and lunchtime!
