CHILDRENS’ SECTION – CLASS 7 GUIDELINES FOR 5-7 YEAR OLDS CUP CAKE FACES Ingredients: 4oz Self Raising Flour 4oz Caster Sugar 4oz Butter or Margarine 2 Large Free Range Eggs Vanilla Essence 2 or 3 drops Butter cream or Water Icing Sweets and Sprinkles to decorate Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 2. Line case cake tin with cup cake cases 3. In a large bowl cream together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, using a whisk Or wooden spoon. 4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Add the vanilla essence. 5. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon or whisk. 6. Using a teaspoon, fill the cases ¾ full with the mixture. 7. Bake in the oven for 10 – 12 minutes. 8. Check the cakes are cooked using a skewer in the centre of the cakes. 9. Leave to cool on a wire rack. 10. When completely cold you may decorate your cupcakes as you wish using butter cream or water icing, sweets and Sprinkles to create the faces! 11. CHILDRENS’ SECTION – CLASS 14 GUIDELINES FOR 8 - 11 YEAR OLDS SCONES Makes 10 - 12 Ingredients: 225g/ 8oz Plain Flour 15ml / 1tbsp baking powder 50g/2oz butter, diced 1 egg beaten 75ml/ 5 tbsp milk 1 beaten egg or milk to glaze Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas mark 7 Lightly butter a baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. 2. Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and add the egg and most of the Milk and mix to a soft dough using a round bladed knife. Add the milk in Gradually as required so that the mixture is not too wet or too dry. 3. Turn out the scone dough on to a floured surface and knead very lightly until Smooth. 4. Roll out the dough to about 2cm thick and cut into 10 or 12 circles using a 5cm Plain or flutted cutter. 5. 5. Transfer to the baking sheet, brush with the beaten egg or milk, then bake for About 8 minutes, until risen and golden. Cool slightly on a wire rack. 6. Choose 6 for the Wanborough Show. 7. CHILDRENS’ SECTION – CLASS 18 11+ YEARS MAKE A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION CAKE Create a Birthday cake for any age group. Make your cake using the Sponge recipe below. (If you wish to make a chocolate cake, take out 3 tbsp of the flour and replace with 3 tbsp of cocoa powder.) then ice and decorate it to your own design. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Add the vanilla essence. 5. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon or whisk. 6. Pour the mixture into the prepared tins. 7. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. 8. Check the cakes are cooked using a skewer in the centre of the cakes. They should be a lovely golden colour. 9. Turn out of the tins and leave to cool on a wire rack. 10. When completely cold sandwich together with jam and or buttercream. 11. Finally decorate as you wish. You can cover your cake with Fondant icing, Butter cream or Royal icing. Be as creative as you like!
