ADVANCING ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST CANCER RESEARCH HOSPITALS The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation 2007 Future of Cancer Research and Care A Message from Dr. Ben Neel and Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz This year, we have worked to further develop our comprehensive cancer program, spanning the spectrum from screening and early detection, to providing the best cancer care, while simultaneously advancing the spirit of inquiry that is inherent to a research hospital. We look forward to building upon this momentum towards our shared vision of translational cancer research. Translational research brings together patient care and treatment with access to cutting edge research advances. There are few places in the world where a strong combination of researchers and highly skilled and motivated clinicians exist under one roof. Princess Margaret Hospital is thus in a unique position of being able to mobilize our resources to integrate basic science with cancer medicine, delivering leading edge “bench-to-bedside” care and treatment to our patients. As a research hospital, our ambition is to learn something from every patient who is treated here, while maintaining the highest level of care and support through their experience with cancer. And, we are continually pushing to accelerate the translation of knowledge, to put everything we know into practice. Clinical research protocols such as our leading guided-therapeutics and new drug development programs, and our world-leading position in cancer stem cell research all speak to our commitment to translational research. There's a clear purpose for us, for supporting research here—to be able to give it to the next person who comes here. We're very proud of our ability to offer the cancer treatment today that will become the new standard tomorrow. We are in a golden age of cancer biology and cancer medicine, informed by the human genome and all the major advancements in molecular and cellular biology. A convergence of developments in multiple disciplines, such as imaging physics, structural biology and information technology, allows us to fully apply scientific advances of the last quarter-century to cancer treatment. It is an opportunity to make major advances, and, as one of the world's top 5 cancer research hospitals, Princess Margaret Hospital is the place to do this efficiently and well. A mandate of translational research allows us to deliver these advances to our patients—it is tomorrow's care, and it is here today at Princess Margaret Hospital. Thank you for your continued generosity and support. With your help, we will prevail in our journey to conquer cancer for ourselves and for future generations. It touches all of us… family, friends and colleagues. Thanks to you, our generous donors, we have had a recordbreaking year that will fuel the incredible work being done at one of the top 5 comprehensive cancer centres in the world—Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). Your support contributed to a record $65 million in net fundraising revenues before investment income for the fiscal year covered in this report, April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007. Our Vision at the Foundation is To Conquer Cancer. This year 11 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer and seven million people will die of the disease. One in three people will hear the words “You have cancer” in their lifetime, changing them and their family forever. These are staggering numbers which make our efforts here at the Foundation ever more urgent. At PMH, we have some of the world's best researchers and clinicians, supported by compassionate nurses and outstanding staff who are working hard to improve these statistics. From transformative research to new ways of treating cancer, we are leading the way in combating this disease. World-renowned researcher Dr. Ben Neel joined us from Harvard Medical School this year, as our new Research Director, citing our high quality of cancer research and stellar team of researchers and clinicians as the attraction. Others leading the way include Dr. Tak Mak, a pioneer in breast cancer research, Dr. David Jaffray, a global leader in image-guided radiation, Dr. Malcolm Moore, a leader in clinical trials, and head and neck surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Irish. Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, Medical Director of the Cancer Program at Princess Margaret Hospital and the University Health Network (UHN), is leading the way in translational research working closely with Dr. Neel. Dr. Gospodarowicz also represents PMH and Canada on the UICC—The International Union Against Cancer, a global cancer foundation. At the Foundation, we made excellent progress against our three-year strategic plan, which set a $200 million net fundraising goal by 2009. We are almost one-third of the way there, with a record $65 million raised this year. These revenues will help PMH continue to deliver breakthrough research and new therapies. During the year, the Foundation introduced several exciting new initiatives. Our multi-disciplined Gift of Stock program, supported by a national advertising campaign, resulted in 177 gifts, a record number. 2 2007 Report to Our Donors In Major Gifts and Planned Giving our total fundraising revenue was just under $28 million. We are deeply grateful to the Dr. Geoffrey R. Conway Memorial Foundation for its generous $3.5 million gift to support a new world-class Chemo Day Care/Blood Transfusion area at PMH. Thanks to other generous donors, we also funded two new endowed research chairs: The J. Douglas Crashley Chair in Gynecologic Oncology Research and The Kevin and Sandra Sullivan Chair in Surgical Oncology. In Community Giving, we continued to encourage and support a broad range of donors through a variety of programs, including the Leadership Giving Society, Tribute and Memorial gifts, The Wings of Hope Dove Wall, and Partners for Hope, our monthly giving program. Our robust directmail program brought in more than 89,000 single gifts and added more than 16,000 new donors to our roster, for a total of $1.3 million in donations. Altogether, these programs raised $4 million in net proceeds during the year. Other Highlights: The expertise of our Special Events team and our wonderful hardworking volunteers helped shape and guide 135 community-based fundraising initiatives such as the Toronto Marathon 5K teams, who raised $500,000 for a variety of cancer programs, and the Spotlight Tribute, which raised $300,000 to fund image-guided therapeutics. Through these efforts, net proceeds to the hospital were $4 million. • Almost $1 million from Jim Kinnear and Bridgette Eansor, Bill and Karen Barnett, and John and Linda Lamacraft for the Healing Beyond the Body Program, an innovative program that helps patients deal with the emotional and social impacts of cancer • $800,000 from Dr. Gerald Hatch and $300,000 from George Kalmar for Image-Guided Therapeutics (GTx) • A well-attended tribute event for Dr. Patrick Gullane which raised funds for a surgical Fellowship • $500,000 from The John and Myrna Daniels Family Foundation for eye cancer research • Our Advisors' Breakfast attracted over 50 financial planners, accountants and lawyers to the PMH Research atrium to learn more about Princess Margaret Hospital and our exciting research agenda The Weekend to End Breast Cancer (WEBC) is our biggest fundraising event. This year it was truly awe-inspiring to be a part of the 5,382 member crowd. Net proceeds of $13.2 million helped open The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Centre and renovate the M. Lau Breast Centre. The first-ever WEBC Impact Forum and Tour was held where Walkers learned about how donations are being used and met leading researchers and clinicians such as Dr. Tak Mak and Dr. David McCready. We also announced the appointment of Dr. Pamela Catton as The Butterfield/Drew Chair in Breast Cancer Survivorship. In fiscal 2007, we added a new Princess Margaret Hospital Lifestyles Lottery to our stable of lotteries that have made the Foundation a leader in this market and grew overall ticket sales. This is a vital source of funding for our groundbreaking research and we truly appreciate all lottery purchasers for their support of our vision. We would like to thank our Board members and many volunteers for their outstanding dedication and support that contributed to our success. Eight new members joined the Board—Lloyd Atkinson, John Bowey, David Denison, Marianne Harris, Chris Jordan, Dr. Ben Neel, Wendy Posluns and Dr. Catherine Zahn—and rolled up their sleeves to pitch right in. We must also recognize the dedicated, wonderful staff at the Foundation. We are grateful to our donors and volunteers who share our vision and give so generously to make Princess Margaret Hospital one of the world's leading cancer research hospitals. Our most important ambition is to continue supporting Princess Margaret Hospital in its quest to conquer cancer. To all of our donors, volunteers, advisors and supporters, we can't thank you enough. Sincerely, Neville W. Kirchmann Chairman Paul Alofs President & CEO The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation 3 World-Class Research Cancer Warriors Leading the Global Battle One of the world’s best Cancer Research Hospitals The world leader in cancer stem cell research Dr. Tak Mak Dr. John Dick It is the outstanding people that have helped make Princess Margaret Hospital one of the top 5 comprehensive cancer research hospitals in the world. With teams focused on specific areas of cancer research and care, the hospital's cancer program is comprised of thousands of individual contributors. Below are snapshots of some ground-breaking researchers and clinicians whose impact on cancer is being felt around the world. For many people, Dr. Tak Mak is a household name, known for his landmark work in cloning human T-cell receptors, a key component of the immune system. His body of research has been cited in more scientific studies around the world than any other scientist's work in Canada. As Director of The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research, Dr. Mak leads a team of researchers working to identify the best genetic targets for breast cancer therapies, developing novel surgical and radiation technologies, discovering potential new drugs aimed at genetic targets, and expanding the world’s knowledge of how breast cancer cells use energy. Dr. John Dick's breakthroughs in cancer stem cell research this year reinforced PMH's leading reputation in cancer research. Dr. Dick identified the first cancer stem cell in leukemia in 1994. In November 2006 he released a study showing that only a small proportion of cells drive the formation of tumours associated with colon cancer. More recently, Dr. Dick and his team of researchers have developed a method that converts normal human blood cells into leukemia stem cells. The hope is that new therapies that come out of this research will be less harmful to normal tissues and be able to attack the cancer at its root more effectively. Dr. Dick also works closely with leading scientists at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine. 4 2007 Report to Our Donors Dr. Norman Boyd, a principal investigator at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research, released a study this year which obtained global headlines when it identified breast density as the number one known risk factor for breast cancer. The study, which was published in January in The New England Journal of Medicine, found the risk of breast cancer was about five times greater in women with extensive dense breast tissue compared to those with little or no dense tissue. Clockwise: Dr. Norman Boyd, Dr. Aaron Schimmer, Dr David Jaffray, Dr Malcom Moore, Dr. Warren Mason, Dr. Lillian Siu and Dr. Amit Oza Dr. Aaron Schimmer, a physician at PMH and a lead researcher at the Ontario Cancer Institute, has identified new molecules that target defects in cancer cells. Those molecules then become a launching point towards new anti-cancer drugs. One of Dr. Schimmer's main targets is a protein called XIAP (X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein), which prevents cancer cells from dying. He discovered an XIAP inhibitor that can kill cancer cells without damage to normal cells, which has led to a potential treatment for acute leukemia. Dr. David Jaffray, head of the Radiation Physics Department at PMH, focuses on the development of imaging systems that improve the precision of therapy. He has developed new technology that uses a form of body imaging called cone-beam computed tomography. This provides a threedimensional view of a tumour or organ, which then enables radiation to be directed with exceptional accuracy (within 2 or 3 millimetres). Dr. Jaffray has been voted one of the industry's Top 10 radiation oncologists/cancer researchers. Dr. Malcolm Moore is director of the Robert and Maggie Bras and Family New Drug Development Program at PMH. This program was renewed by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as one of seven North American sites to perform new drug development of novel anti-cancer agents. His clinical and laboratory research focuses on new therapies in the areas of prostate and pancreatic cancers. Under the leadership of Dr. Warren Mason, Medical Director of The Gerry and Nancy Pencer Brain Tumor Centre at PMH, the centre produced the first advance in the treatment of glioblastoma, the most deadly form of brain cancer, in over 30 years. Dr. Mason's international study has led to a new standard of care for brain tumour treatment around the world. Dr. Lillian Siu is co-director of the Robert and Maggie Bras and Family New Drug Development Program at PMH. Her major research focus is in new anti-cancer drug development, especially in phase I trials and head and neck malignancies. Dr. Siu has been published in high impact journals including a recent editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine and several articles in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Along with Dr. Lillian Siu, Dr. Amit Oza is co-director of the Robert and Maggie Bras and Family New Drug Development Program. Dr. Oza has been the principal investigator in trials of designer drugs to combat gynecological cancer and advanced colorectal malignancies. His research, which incorporates novel endpoints and translational research, focuses on the development, assessment and validation of novel therapeutic strategies for cancer. The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation 5 Conquering Breast Cancer The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research Dr. Tak Mak and his team tackle breast cancer on many fronts One of the world’s best Cancer Research Hospitals A world leader in regenerative medicine Dr. Tak Mak (centre) and his team of principal investigators (l. to r.): Dr. Pamela Sumiko Ohashi, Dr. Lisa Martin, Dr. Lea Harrington, Dr. Hitoshi Okada, Dr. Norman Boyd, Dr. Srikala Sridhar Grabbing headlines around the world last year, a breakthrough study led by Dr. Norman Boyd identified extensive breast density as an important risk factor in the development of breast cancer. Dr. Boyd is part of an elite team of cancer specialists at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital. This is just one of many significant research findings generated by the team at the Institute, under the direction of Dr. Tak Mak. Since June 2004, Dr. Mak has recruited some of the world's top cancer specialists to the Institute and now leads a team of over 130 highly-skilled researchers and dedicated support staff focused on conquering breast cancer. Another star member of the Institute's team is Dr. Mark Clemons, who joined last year to lead the Breast Medical Oncology Group which focuses on patient-centred research. The group runs two programs that are making a significant impact. The Locally Advanced Breast Cancer Program aims to redefine research and treatment for young women typically affected by an aggressive form of breast cancer. The internationally-respected Bone Metastases Research Program looks at the spread of cancer to the bone, reduction of pain for patients through drug therapies, and ultimately, how to stop breast cancer from spreading. “Dr. Clemons is focused on the worst cases in this young demographic,” says Dr. Mak. “He eats, drinks, sleeps and dreams locally advanced breast cancer.” Tenacity, talent and teamwork—three key ingredients needed to conquer breast cancer—are fortunately in good supply at The Campbell Family Institute. WEBC Survivorship Centre New website links breast cancer survivors from coast to coast From Cornerbrook to Victoria, Inuvik to Toronto, women with breast cancer now have an online tool to help them manage their disease, thanks to Princess Margaret Hospital's Caring Voices website. Caring Voices provides women with a chance to join online discussions, link with peer survivors and benefit from expert medical information. The home page of caringvoices.ca 6 2007 Report to Our Donors Funding for Caring Voices comes from THE QUILT, a group that raises funds to provide emotional, informational and physical support for breast cancer survivors and their families. Weekend to End Breast Cancer A record $13.2 million for cutting-edge research and enhanced patient care More than 5,382 people hit the pavement in September for the 60-km Weekend to End Breast Cancer (WEBC), propelled by a shared mission: To help Princess Margaret Hospital end breast cancer. The $13.2 million in net proceeds raised in the fourth annual event will help the hospital continue its leading breast cancer research, as well as support our clinical care and survivorship programs. Highlights of support: • $5.5 million to The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research led by Dr. Tak Mak • $1.7 million to support a comprehensive breast imaging program led by Dr. Thomas Helbich • $1 million in continued support of The WEBC Survivorship Program • $500,000 to support clinical trials • $450,000 to support the Pathology Tumour Bank An enthusiastic crowd gathers to start the 4th annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer WEBC proceeds also support Dr. David McCready’s Rapid Diagnosis pilot program and Dr. Norman Boyd's pioneering research into breast density and the study of high risk factors for breast cancer. Survivorship Chair Teamwork helps survivorship program thrive Giving is personal, especially for David and Paula Butterfield and Sherry Taylor Drew. The three met at PMH and have joined forces to fund the new Butterfield/Drew Chair in Breast Cancer Survivorship. The Chair is held by Dr. Pamela Catton, Medical Director of the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program. At Princess Margaret Hospital, a person becomes a 'survivor' right from the time they receive a diagnosis of cancer. The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Survivorship Program enables cancer patients and their caregivers to have the best quality of life possible while managing the physical, emotional and practical challenges that come with, through and beyond the disease. how to proceed with their lives after treatments had ended,” says Sherry. “Then David and Paula asked me to join them in creating this new chair, a team found Dr. Catton and the rest is history!” Dr. Catton's focus as survivorship chair will include research into a number of post-treatment issues. She also received a multi-million dollar grant from the federal and provincial governments to develop a research unit and build on the work of the chair. “From Paula's personal experience with breast cancer, navigating the system can be extremely overwhelming both pre- and post-treatment,” says David. “The survivorship idea seemed to be a good way to assist patients dealing with the many complex issues surrounding diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment issues.” This is the first comprehensive survivorship program in the country that, while focused on breast cancer survivors, is open to survivors with other forms of cancer. “I learned of the hospital's desire to form a “survivorship" chair to help ex-patients who, like myself, were wondering (l. to r.) Healing Beyond the Body (HBB) is about specially-trained volunteers working in partnership with professional staff to provide information, support and comfort to patients and their families in one of the world's largest chemotherapy treatment centres. The Healing Journey, part of HBB, combines psychology, spirituality and group support to complement cancer treatments. Marion Johnson is a cancer survivor who went through The Healing Journey. “I can't tell you how powerful it is,” she says. “It's such a gift to humanity. In The Healing Journey, your mind and serenity contribute to the improvement of your health.” This year, the program received several generous donations totalling almost $1 million. These funds have helped expand volunteer training and provide additional support for other HBB programs, such as Chemo Buddies, in which volunteers accompany patients to treatments. Cancer is so limited It cannot cripple love, It cannot shatter hope It cannot corrode faith, It cannot destroy peace It cannot kill friendship, It cannot suppress memories It cannot silence courage, It cannot invade the soul It cannot steal eternal life, It cannot conquer the spirit (Unknown) 8 2007 Report to Our Donors Celebrating Achievements Gullane Tribute Training cancer surgeons across the globe For Montrealer Brian Gallery, who had been told his cancer was untreatable, Dr. Patrick Gullane is truly a lifesaver. At a special tribute dinner in September, attended by over 350 patients, friends, family and colleagues, a few simple words said it all. “This man saved my life,” he told guests of the internationally-renowned surgeon who operated on his cancer. Dr. Patrick Gullane, Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at Princess Margaret Hospital Dr. Gullane is a dedicated surgeon, a superb teacher and an outstanding role model whose contributions to the understanding and treatment of head and neck cancers have benefited patients across the globe. Under his leadership, the otolaryngology department has become one of the top rated programs in North America. Dr. Gullane is the Wharton Chair in Head and Neck Surgery, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Gullane's combination of charisma, surgical skill and teaching abilities inspired the new Gullane Fellowship Fund in Surgical Oncology that will train the next generation of oncology surgeons at Princess Margaret Hospital. Spotlight Tribute Ground-breaking technology provides 3D view of cancer Take three visionary doctors who aim to revolutionize cancer treatment, add three generous families and the results are extraordinary. Drs. Jonathan Irish, David Jaffray and Walter Kucharczyk lead a team at Princess Margaret Hospital that is making image-guided therapeutics (GTx) a reality in cancer treatment. An innovative new approach that provides real-time images during procedures, GTx combines imaging, radiation and surgery for targeted cancer treatment. “We can visualize targets and direct treatment in one step,” says physicist Dr. David Jaffray, who leads the team. “Adapting imaging technology to the operating room will radically change surgery and ultimately save lives.” Thanks to the strong leadership and tireless work of co-chairs Shirley Domelle, Holly Miklas, and Martha Shaw, the three doctors were honoured at the Spotlight Tribute event in February. Over 400 guests gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel to watch journalist Valerie Pringle conduct a live, onstage interview with the doctors. Other highlights of the program included a live performance by Juno awardwinning jacksoul. Event proceeds, combined with major gifts from Dr. Gerald Hatch, George Kalmar, and Kevin Sullivan and his family, raised more than $3 million to help create an image-guided operating room for Princess Margaret Hospital’s cancer program. Henry and his wife Audrey had been PMH donors for over a decade, driven by their strong conviction in eradicating cancer. Audrey, a nurse, was well aware of the challenges facing people with cancer. But in 2000, the couple experienced Princess Margaret Hospital first-hand when Audrey was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. While Audrey's cancer was too advanced to respond to treatment, her husband remains grateful for the excellent care his late wife received. “We were both very impressed with Princess Margaret's approach to treating cancer,” says Henry. ”They take a personal interest in each patient. You are not just a number.” In late 2005, Henry too was diagnosed with cancer; he underwent radiation at the hospital and is being closely monitored to locate the primary source. Not long after, he received a letter in the mail from the Foundation. The letter introduced the Foundation's Gift of Stock program, and described the benefits of tax changes introduced by the federal government in 2006. Henry decided that a gift of stock was a perfect opportunity to make a donation. At the opening bell of the TSX, Foundation and hospital staff celebrate the launch of the Gift of Stock program Gift of Stock donors receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value of the gift and pay no capital gains tax on the growth in value of the donated shares. This helps donors lower their income tax while making a solid investment in conquering cancer. This year, the newly launched program attracted 177 gifts, the largest number in the hospital sector. Winning the Battle Against Cancer Lotteries fund innovative research and treatment Last spring, the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation introduced its newest Lottery—the Lifestyles Lottery. With a third lottery added to the existing Home and Cash, Cars, and Condos programs, the Foundation has ramped up its efforts in funding leading edge research advancements. (l. to r.) Dr. Jeff Siewerdsen of Princess Margaret Hospital, Lifestyles Lottery winner Gail Terron, husband Bob Terron, and Foundation Vice President Christine Lasky 10 2007 Report to Our Donors Windsor native Gail Terron, winner of the Lifestyles Lottery grand prize, has a strong connection to Princess Margaret—her late mother was treated for breast cancer at the hospital. Gail, who has been buying tickets for several years, had just retired when she, quite literally, hit the jackpot. The three lotteries raised $15.3 million in net proceeds for cancer research this year. Special Events Rebecca's Hope Lounge An oasis for young leukemia patients For a young person with leukemia, the brightly coloured room on the 14th floor is like a piece of home, a refuge in which to hang out and relax. Open to patients and their families, Rebecca's Hope Lounge, completed Rebecca's family in the lounge (l. to r.): Her in March, is outfitmother Theo, father Paul, and brothers Philip and David ted with a modern entertainment centre, a cozy sofa and fireplace, a small kitchen in which to replicate home-cooked meals and a great view of the city. The lounge speaks to the impact collaboration has on the hospital's battle against cancer. It Rebecca Borg comes out of an eclectic range of donor contributions, with Rebecca's Hope Charity Cruise, the Bank of Cyprus's Chain of Life Charity Dinner and the Michael Ryan Leal Memorial Fund all joining to make the space a reality. Combined with the generosity of designers, home décor and renovation industry companies and others, the result looks like something straight from the pages of a design magazine. Small wonder—Rebecca's aunt, Karen Kirk, a magazine décor editor, helped design the room for a truly personal touch. The lounge is a concrete example of the hospital's psychosocial approach to creating patient environments that focus on comfort and atmosphere. It is also a way for a grateful family to give back to the hospital and other patients—the room is named after Rebecca Borg, who lost her battle with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2003, at the age of 21. “It is a place for all those patients and their families who will pass through the doors of this room to find the hope that is Rebecca's Hope Lounge provides light, a wonderful city view and some helpful distractions for patients and their family Hugo Boss Event Gynecological programs receive major boost For the 400 guests who attended The Butterfly Effect (now known as the Boss Benefit), it was a spectacular evening, highlighting the important work accomplished by the hospital's gynecological cancer research team, the largest and most comprehensive program in the country. The event was a result of the ongoing generosity of corporate partner Hugo Boss, who has pledged to raise over a million dollars for gynecological cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital. An unusual twist was the location— Robert and Diane Herjavec kindly opened their own home for the evening, playing host to a dinner, concert and fashion show. Michael Bublé, five-time Juno winner and one of Canada's hottest performers, serenaded the audience with his sultry voice while Hugo Boss previewed an exclusive Boss Woman fashion show. The climax of the show was the announcement of Princess Margaret Hospital's new J. Douglas Crashley Chair in Gynecological Cancer Research. One of the world’s best Cancer Research Hospitals “We gave to Princess Margaret Hospital because we were directly affected by my brother Rob's cancer,” says Marc Muzzo. “The service was outstanding, incredible,” says Marc. “For someone going through something like that, you need people who listen and care, who don't push you through the system. That is Princess Margaret.” One of the world’s largest radiation centres Marc's father Marco made a $2.5 million pledge on behalf of the family to support the minimally invasive surgical oncology program in gratitude for the hospital's terrific treatment and care of his son Robert Muzzo. In a strange twist of fate, Marco Muzzo received treatment here too, first for colon, then pancreatic cancer. He was so committed to supporting the hospital that he completed his pledge commitment through a gift from his Estate. Moto Amoré is a fundraising event run annually by Marco Muzzo and his son Marc in remembrance of their son/brother Rob In 2004, the family organized the Moto Amoré event, a tribute to Rob's love for cars. The annual memorial event at Mosport provides sports car enthusiasts with the opportunity to drive racing vehicles accompanied by professional drivers. Now in its fourth year, it has raised more than $700,000 for the hospital's cancer programs. Now that's Amoré! Conway Foundation New state-of-the art chemotherapy and transfusion centres The chemotherapy unit at Princess Margaret Hospital is a busy place, with more than 25,000 annual visits. Thanks to a generous $3.5 million commitment from the Dr. Geoffrey R. Conway Memorial Foundation, patients and their families will soon receive care in a new state-of-the-art chemotherapy and transfusion centre. The Dr. Geoffrey R. Conway Chemotherapy Centre will provide a bright, comfortable, expanded space for patients to receive treatment. The Chemotherapy Daycare and Transfusion Units, which treat patients with solid tumours and blood cancers like leukemia, are two of the hospital's busiest facilities. This donation allows the hospital to expand the previously cramped areas, improve waiting times—and comfort levels—and provide information through a Patient Education Facility. The Conway Foundation has previously supported the renovation of the Hospital's chapel. This time, it was the late Dr. Conway's personal experience with the Chemo Daycare and Transfusion units, where he spent time while being treated for multiple myeloma, that inspired the much-needed expansion. 14 2007 Report to Our Donors Honour Roll Here are some of the many honours awarded to members of the Princess Margaret Hospital community during the year. Nina Chan, a pharmacist at PMH, is the recipient of the Pharmacy Practice Commitment to Care Award in the Patient Care category as a result of her leadership in making “Inpatient Care at an Outpatient Pharmacy” possible. Barb Fitzgerald, a nurse at PMH, received the award of distinction for her national contribution in oncology care. She also received the CANO/Astra Zeneca Reach for Excellence Award. Jan Stewart, a nurse at PMH, received the award of distinction for her national contribution in oncology care. She also received the CANO/Berlex award for Excellence in Hematology Oncology for Nursing. Dr. Michael Jewett, President of the Canadian Urology Association and a member of the Department of Surgical Oncology at PMH has been appointed as the inaugural Farquharson Chair in Kidney Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Joan Murphy, Head, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, was the recipient of the J. Douglas Crashley Chair in Gynecological Cancer Research. The chair is Canada's most comprehensive chair in gynecological cancer research. Dr. Brian Raught, scientist at PMH, was appointed to a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Proteomics and Molecular Medicine. Drs. Tak Mak, Director, and Mary Saunders, Scientific Editor of The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research, have won an Honourable Mention award for their book The Immune Response: Basic and Clinical Principles. The award was presented by the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers (AAP). Dr. Jeremy Squire, a senior scientist at Princess Margaret's research arm, the Ontario Cancer Institute, has been awarded one of 16 grants from The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada. Dr. Squire is investigating a genefusion protein that is specific to prostate cancer, and could yield a new, highly accurate diagnostic marker of the disease in as little as 12 months of study. His goal is to bring this new knowledge into clinical practice as soon as possible, in order to improve detection, diagnosis and ultimately the treatment of prostate cancer. Paul Alofs, President and CEO, the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation is appointed to the UICC International Cancer Foundation Governing Board. The UICC International Cancer Foundation (ICF) was created in 1971 to support the vision, mission, and work of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), the only international non-governmental organization that is dedicated solely to the global control of cancer. Dr. Lea Harrington, a senior scientist at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital, was one out of 39 chosen—out of a pool of 546 applications—as a winner of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar awards. Dr. Harrington will receive a five-year award totaling nearly $500,000 for her research. Dr. Pamela Ohashi, at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital, has received a $705,000 grant from the Canadian Cancer Society, to continue her research into T-cells, which have the potential to kill cancer cells. Drs. Pamela Catton, John Dick and Igor Jurisica headed up three of five research teams awarded federal grants by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Drs. James Till and Ernest McCulloch received the Order of Ontario, the province's highest award for excellence in any field of endeavour. The two doctors first laid the foundation for stem cell science with their pioneering work over 45 years ago. It was their discovery, demonstrating the existence of stem cells and their properties, which led to bone marrow transplants for treating leukemia. Also receiving the Order of Ontario was Dr. Brenda L. Gallie, recognized for her expertise in the treatment of retinoblastoma, a type of childhood eye cancer. Dr. Gallie's team has developed the most highly sensitive molecular tests for mutations in the gene that causes retinoblastoma, which can identify children at risk for this cancer before they are born. Management is responsible for the integrity and objectivity of the financial statements and has established systems of internal control which are designed to provide reasonable assurance that assets are safeguarded from loss or unauthorized use and to produce reliable accounting records for the preparation of financial information. The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring that management fulfills its responsibility for financial reporting and internal control. The Board exercises its responsibilities through the Investment Committee, composed of members of the Board, who meet regularly with representatives of management and with the external investment managers and consultants, to monitor the performance of the investment portfolio. The Audit & Accountability Committee comprised of members of the Board and the community, meets regularly with management to monitor the financial activity of the Foundation together with the functioning of the accounting and control systems. This Committee also meets with management and the external auditors to review the results of the auditing activity. The external auditors have conducted an independent audit, in accordance with generally accepted standards, and have expressed their opinions on the financial statements. Their report outlines the nature of their audit and their opinion on the fairness of the financial statements of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and the accounting principles followed in management's preparation thereof. 44 Neville W. Kirchman Chairman, Board of Directors Paul Alofs President & CEO John H. Bowey, FCA Chair, Audit & Accountability Committee Frank J. Copping, CA Treasurer 2007 Report to Our Donors AUDITORS' REPORT To the Members of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation We have audited the balance sheet of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation as at March 31, 2007 and the statement of revenue, expense and changes in fund balances for the year then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Foundation's management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. In our opinion, these financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Foundation as at March 31, 2007 and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. As required by the Canada Corporations Act, we report that, in our opinion, these principles have been applied, on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year. Toronto, Canada, June 1, 2007. The Foundation was established to solicit, receive and maintain funds and to apply these funds to improve and enhance cancer research, professional education and patient care activities provided by the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital ["OCI/PMH"], which are part of the University Health Network ["UHN"]. The Foundation is a public foundation registered under the Income Tax Act (Canada) [the "Act"] and, as such, is exempt from income taxes and able to issue donation receipts for income tax purposes, under Registration Number 88900 7597 RR 0001. In order to maintain its status as a public foundation registered under the Act, the Foundation must meet certain requirements within the Act. In the opinion of management, these requirements have been met. 2. SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES The financial statements of the Foundation have been prepared in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. The following summary of significant accounting policies is set forth to facilitate the understanding of these financial statements: Fund accounting In order to ensure observance of the limitations and restrictions placed on the use of resources available to the Foundation, the accounts of the Foundation are maintained in accordance with the principles of fund accounting. Accordingly, resources are classified for accounting and reporting purposes into funds. These funds are held in accordance with the objectives specified by the donors or in accordance with directives issued by the Board of Directors [the "Board"]. Transfers between the funds are made when it is considered appropriate and authorized by the Board. To meet these objectives of financial reporting and stewardship over assets, certain interfund transfers are necessary to ensure the appropriate allocation of assets and liabilities to the respective funds. These interfund transfers are recorded in the statement of revenue, expense and changes in fund balances. For financial reporting purposes, the accounts have been classified into the following funds: [a] General Fund The General Fund accounts for the Foundation's general fundraising, granting and administrative activities. The General Fund reports unrestricted resources available for immediate purposes. The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS [in thousands] March 31, 2007 [b] Restricted Fund The Restricted Fund includes those funds where resources are to be used for an identified purpose as specified by the donor, as stipulated by the fundraising appeal or as determined by the Board. [c] Endowment Fund The Endowment Fund includes those funds where either donor or internal restrictions require that the principal be maintained by the Foundation on a permanent basis. Investments and investment income The investments of the Foundation are recorded at market value. Investment income includes dividends, interest, realized gains (losses) and changes in unrealized gains (losses), net of investment management fees. Investment income earned on Endowment Fund or Restricted Fund resources that must be spent on donor-restricted activities is recognized as revenue of the Restricted Fund. Investment income subject to donor restrictions stipulating that it be added to the principal amount of the endowment is recognized as revenue of the Endowment Fund. Unrestricted investment income earned on Endowment Fund, Restricted Fund and General Fund resources is recognized as revenue of the General Fund. Translation of foreign currencies The cost of investments, revenues and expenses denominated in foreign currencies are translated into Canadian dollars at the transaction date. The market value of investments and other monetary items denominated in foreign currencies are translated at the year-end rate. Revenue recognition Donations and bequests are recorded on a cash basis since pledges are not legally enforceable claims. Donor-restricted donations for endowment purposes are recognized as revenue in the Endowment Fund. Other donor-restricted donations are recognized as revenue of the Restricted Fund. Unrestricted donations are recognized as revenue of the General Fund. Lottery revenue and revenue from the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and other events are recognized net of all related expenses in the fiscal year in which the program is concluded. Revenue and expenses related to lotteries for which prize draws take place and events that take place subsequent to the year end are deferred. The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS [in thousands] March 31, 2007 Grant recognition Grants are recognized when payable. Contributed goods and services Contributed capital assets that are transferred to UHN are recognized at their fair market value in the financial statements. Other contributed goods and services are not recognized. Capital assets Purchased capital assets are recorded at cost less accumulated amortization. Donated capital assets are recorded at fair value at the date of contribution. Amortization is provided on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets as follows: Office equipment Computer hardware and software 10 years 3 years Financial instruments The carrying values of financial instruments are equal to their fair values unless otherwise noted. The Foundation is subject to market, currency and interest rate risks with respect to its investments. Employee future benefit plans The Foundation participates in a multi-employer defined benefit pension plan and a non-pension defined benefit plan sponsored by UHN. Contributions to these plans are expensed when due. Use of estimates The preparation of financial statements in conformity with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and the disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenue and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates. The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS [in thousands] March 31, 2007 3. INVESTMENT INCOME [a] Investment income earned on the Foundation's assets consists of the following: Interest, dividends and realized gains Net change in unrealized gain on investments Less investment management and custodial fees 2007 2006 $ $ 10,244 537 10,781 831 9,950 9,019 7,186 16,205 753 15,452 The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS [in thousands] March 31, 2007 [b] Investment income is allocated among the funds based on the Foundation's capital preservation policy. This policy has the objective of protecting the real value of the endowments by limiting the amount of earned income available for spending and requiring the reinvestment of any income earned in excess of this limit. This preservation of capital is recorded as revenue of the Endowment Fund for externally endowed funds. For internally endowed funds, the preservation of capital is recorded as income of the General Fund and transferred to the Endowment Fund in the statement of revenue, expense and changes in fund balances. In any year, should net investment income not be sufficient to fund the amount required for spending, the amount that is to be made available for spending is funded by accumulated reinvested income. However for individual funds without sufficient reinvested income, endowment capital is transferred to the Restricted Fund for this purpose. This amount is expected to be recovered by future net investment income. Currently, the income available for spending is set at 5% of the market value of the Endowment Fund balances. An additional 1% is recorded in the General Fund to cover administrative costs. Investment income recorded in the Restricted Fund represents income earned on endowments where the donor has stipulated that the income must be used for restricted purposes or where there are agreements requiring income to be allocated to restricted funds. [c] Gains and losses arising from the sale of donated investments that fund specific endowed or restricted funds are recorded in these funds. [d] In 2007, investment income of $3,559 was earned on investments held for endowments. No investment income was available for preservation of capital of endowments and there was a shortfall in the amount available for spending. An amount of $984 was recorded as General Fund revenue to cover administrative costs. With respect to externally endowed funds, the amount available for spending of $2,179 was recorded as Restricted Fund revenue and the shortfall of $2,004 was transferred from the Endowment Fund to the Restricted Fund. With respect to internally endowed funds, income of $421 was recorded as General Fund revenue and transferred to the Restricted Fund. The shortfall of funds available for spending of $347 was recorded as a transfer from the Endowment Fund to the Restricted Fund. In 2006, investment income of $6,081 was allocated for the preservation of capital. Of this amount, $4,965 related to externally endowed funds was recorded as investment income in the Endowment Fund. Capital preservation of $1,018 related to Board endowed funds was recorded as income in the General Fund and then transferred to the Endowment Fund. The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS [in thousands] March 31, 2007 [e] The Board also approved net transfers to the Endowment Fund of $2,517 [2006 - $1,652] with $2,273 [2006 - $2,097] from the General Fund and $244 from the Restricted Fund [2006 to the Restricted Fund - of $445] relating to internally endowed bequests and changes in the designation of funds as directed by donors or the Board. 12.
