media – then it will not be returned to the student.
Computer Virus Protection
Computer viruses are, unfortunately, a fact of life. Using the secondary storage on more than one computer
creates the possibility of infecting computers and storage devices with a computer virus. This exposes the
computers of the college, your personal computer, and any others you may be using to potentially damaging
viruses. The college has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place to protect its computers, but cannot
guarantee that a virus might not temporarily infect one of its machines. It is your responsibility to protect all
computers under your control and use and ensure that each USB Drive/CD you use, whenever or
wherever you use it, has been scanned with anti-virus software. Since new viruses arise continually, your
anti-virus software must be kept current. Since no anti-virus software will find every virus, keeping copies of
data (backups) is extremely important.
If you loose your work due to a virus, no backups, computer freezing, etc. you are still held
responsible for getting your work in on the due date. No Exceptions! Save your work often on
multiple storage devices.
Software Piracy
Please be aware of software piracy. Do not load unauthorized software on LSCS computers. Do not copy any
unauthorized software for your personal gain from LSCS computers. Appropriate disciplinary action will be
taken against anyone violating copyright laws.

Academic Integrity
LSCS is committed to a high standard of academic integrity in the academic community. In becoming a part of
the academic community, students are responsible for honesty and independent effort. Failure to uphold these
standards includes, but is not limited to, the following: plagiarizing written work or projects, cheating on exams
or assignments, collusion on and exam or project, and misrepresentation of credentials or prerequisites when
registering for a course. Definitions of these offenses can be found in the current catalog.
When there is clear evidence of cheating, plagiarism, collusion or misrepresentation, the instructor will take
disciplinary action including but not limited to: requiring the student to retake or resubmit an exam or
assignment, assigning a grade of zero or 'F' for an exam or assignment; or assigning a grade of 'F' for the
course. Additional sanctions including being withdrawn from the course/program or expelled from college also
may be imposed.
Attendance - Online
The student is expected to devote his/her energy to attaining the skills and knowledge required for this course;
therefore, online attendance is extremely important to success. By not logging in and checking and
participating in the online discussions will be considered as excessive absences. Excessive absences most
inevitably result in the failure of the student to complete assignments in a timely manner.
Due to the online nature of the course, it is the responsibility of the student to browse through different
discussions and emails. If the instructor has responded to the query in earlier discussions, then it will not
be repeated for each individual student. It is the student’s responsibility to read all discussions, check
calendar, and other information. Instructor will make every effort to respond to the query in a timely
manner.
Course Withdrawal
Student who decides not to complete the course must withdraw and complete all the paperwork
before the official drop date (January 6). Failure to do so will result in a grade of 'F' for the
course. The instructor will NOT drop a student from class for failure to attend. The student will
receive a grade based upon what course work is completed and not completed. Work that is not
completed will receive a grade of zero.
Additional information on schedule changes and withdrawals can be obtained from the web site http://www.lonestar.edu/course-drops.htm.
With the passage of SB 1231, an institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop more than six
(6) courses, including any course a transfer student has dropped at another public institution of higher
education. This applies only to a first-time in college student (FTIC) enrolled in Texas public higher education,
beginning Fall 2007. Additional information can be obtained from the web site http://www.lonestar.edu/course-drops.htm.

Instructional Procedures and Technologies
During the semester, the instructor may utilize various instructional procedures and technological tools to
enhance student learning. The online discussion (LSC-Online) is to be considered a learning environment in
which students interact with the instructor, and with fellow students. The following is a list of instructional
procedures and technologies the student can expect to experience in this course.
Field Trips (optional)/Guest Speakers (online)
Group Discussions and Activities (online)
Internet Activities
Online Training and Assessment
Projects
If necessary, the instructor will summarize under the discussion/mail – update about the course issues and
requirements. Please check the calendar and/or updates daily. Since, we do not meet face-to-face daily online discussion/email (LSC-Online) or Instant Messages (IM – rmalkan29@hotmail.com) or Skype
(rmalkan) or talking to the instructor over the phone (936.273.7344) is the best way to communicate. If
on campus, you are most welcome to stop by my office for any questions you may have.
Means of Assessment
The course is comprised of two parts— theory concepts (Textbook) and lab-hands-on (Microsoft Office 2007
textbook). Student can complete the required computer lab projects at home or in the Extended Learning Center
(the ELC) – if needed.
The student’s grade will be determined by the following evaluation scale:
5 Chapter Tests (60 points each) ................................. …300 points
4 Office 2007 Exams (70 points each) .............................. 280 points
Comprehensive Research Project .................................... 200 points
Final Exam Comprehensive(Chapters 1-13) ................. 120 points
Final Exam Comprehensive (Office 2007).................... 100 points
900 -1000 points = A
800 - 899 points = B
700 - 799 points = C
600 - 699 points = D
0 - 600 points = F
Total Semester Points ...................... 1000 points
The grade of I (Incomplete) is only assigned under extreme circumstances (hospitalization during final weeks,
etc.) at the instructor’s discretion. Factors to be considered are proof of the circumstance in question, student’s
status in the course at the time of the circumstance (minimum 90% completion), etc.
Grading Procedures
Exam Formats:
Tests will be objective (Multiple-Choice, True-False, etc.). They will be online and timed (LSCSOnline-Angel). They are based on the concept textbook (Tomorrow’s Technology and You).
Microsoft Office 2007 Exams will be performance-based. These tests will be timed and online. They
are based on the GO Office 2007 textbook and will require access to MyITLab web site
(www.myITlab.com). Students cannot share the login IDs with anyone.
The Project will require the student to work individually performing research on an assigned topic, and
creating a website based on the research project. (See Research Project – Page 9)
The Comprehensive Final Exams will consist of two parts: (1) performance of Microsoft Office 2007
skills (MyITLab), and (2) objective/subjective application of computer terminology and concepts
(LSCS-Online). It will be comprehensive and timed.
These formats are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion; sufficient prior notice will be given.

Page 5
Late Assignments/Exams:
Tests and Exams will be given only on the days they are scheduled. There will be no extension
under any circumstances. Submission of hands-on assignments from GO Office 2007 textbook is a
requirement for bonus points. These assignments are not graded. If the assignments are
completed by the student, then the Office 2007 performance tests (MyITlab) will reflect the
outcome. Assignment submission will be considered as a curve (bonus points) towards the final
course grade only if you have submitted all the assignments in time and participated in classroom
discussions.
Important Information: All tests/exams are timed. For online tests/exams, it is important that you make sure
that your computer is functioning properly and your Internet connection is fine. Exams will not be reset to take
it over. If your computer freezes frequently or Internet connection is disconnected during exam then you may
be requested to take your exams on campus. Under no circumstances will you be allowed to retake the exam.
Once you start the exam you must complete it. Any discrepancy must be brought to my attention in writing
(email) to me immediately. Failure to do so will result in you getting the current grade assigned to you. If
desired, students can take the test in the Testing Center (ELC) on campus.
Since all tests and exams are online, it is understood that the student taking the class is the person taking
the exams. By signing for this course, the student is making a commitment that all work will be done by
the student himself or herself.
Syllabus Change
While every attempt has been made to prepare this syllabus and class schedule in final form, it will be the
instructor's prerogative to make any changes as may be deemed necessary in order to meet the learning
outcomes of the course. Students will be notified in writing of any change.

Research Project - Comprehensive Multicultural Web Project
This is a Research Project – you must do your own research on creating a web page! You are to
design web pages that will serve as a business and tourism information site for the country. This web
page will be one that would inform a prospective visitor about points of interest about the approved
country. This semester we will focus on African, Middle Eastern, Asian (No Australia & New
Zealand), Latin American (No Belize, Bahamas) countries. The web page will be designed using all
elements of MS Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access). You might want to include
things such as pictures from that country, business and cultural data, weather information, visa
requirements, airline schedule, hotels, etc. Make sure that there is some meaning to the information
you are providing. Just do not cut and paste information. Create a theme for each application so that
you can provide the information correctly. This year we are focusing on the subject of Water. You
may want to include some research on Water resources for the country.
(http://www.lonestar.edu/12020.htm) For example – an Excel file with just simple text information
can be provided with Word – why use Excel if there are no calculations and graphs? Similarly, a user
must be able to get some information from Access database. Home page must be created in Word
2007 with hyperlinks to different files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and saved as an HTML
(web page). You must name this file as index.html. This is a Research Project – you must do your
own research on creating a web page! You must cite all sources used as a separate Word
document in APA format.
Research Project Examples
Former Students Web Site Projects
Note: These sites are for your examples only. Please get the ideas about how former students have
used Office Applications to create a Web Site for a particular country. Project criteria for the former
students might be different from this semester. Observe how sound, animation, etc. are all included in
different sites. When creating your own web site, use your own creativity to design the site. The
following are just an example. Remember, this is not a web design class. The objective of this
project is to make sure that you have used all the Office Applications to create a web site.

Project Criteria
The project must meet the criteria for a minimum of 120 points before additional features are graded. For
example you may have included all the features for an A in Excel, Word and PowerPoint, but did not meet the
minimum criteria for an Access file – then all the additional features will not be graded. A student must
progress from a minimum of 120 points to 200 points.
To get a D (120-139 Points) for this project it must have all of the following elements (minimum criteria):
 A Word and HTML formatted page free of any spelling or grammar errors as the index page.
 An Excel table and chart with significant calculation function and data.
 A linked PowerPoint presentation based on a theme (minimum 15 slides)
 A form and simple report with database table from Access with minimum 15 records and 5-8 fields.
Database must make sense so that data can be queried.
 All files are uploaded in LSCOnline as one zipped file or separately by the due date.(Assignment Icon)
To get a C (140-159 Points) for this project it must have all of the elements for a D and all of the following
elements:
 The Web page must include extra features – such as a table, graphics, font changes, motion, etc.
 The Excel portion must include extra features – such as shading, borders, math and/or financial
formulas, additional charts, etc.
 The PowerPoint portion must include extra features – such as clip-art, transition, font changes, layout
changes, background changes, master slide features, etc.
 The Access examples must include extra features – such as forms, criteria queries (not field queries)
and query reports with formatting features (lines, boxes, font changes, etc.).
To get an B (160-179 points) for this project it must have all of the elements for C and all of the following
elements:
 The Web page should include sound and/or video.
 The Excel portion should be linked to a file that must include advanced features – such as a multi-sheet
document, charts, and advanced formulas (IF..THEN, Goal, etc.).
 The PowerPoint portion should be linked to a file that must include advanced features – such as
scanned picture and sound. Note the difference between scanned picture and clip-art.
 The Access portion should be linked to a file that must include advanced features – such as a calculated
formula field in a report based on criteria queries.
To get an A (180-200 points) for this project it must have all of the elements for B and all of the following
elements:
 The Web page with supporting files should be uploaded to a free web site. You can load it at
www.angelfire.com, www.yahoo.com, etc.
 Web site is functional and all links works correctly.
 Web site design consideration – tabs, menus, etc.
Research Project Dates
Project Country Choices (two) are due by December 16, 2009. All project choices will be approved by December 17,
2009. Projects will not be accepted after the due date – January 5, 2009. No EXCEPTIONS! Do not wait to do the
project until the last week. It is a semester long project. As you learn each software application, work on your research
project. If needed, you can learn how to upload the files at the free web site. This way you can start understanding the
system and work on bugs and errors earlier, rather than waiting until the last weeks and get frustrated.
