In fact, his nominator said that he stepped up during the first quarter to meet the shop’s needs in an extraordinary way when DLS had several mechanics out for various reasons and the shop was short-handed. Seeing this, Phillip approached his supervisor about helping out. He picked up six different shifts, all of which were on different schedules, for a couple of months. His nominator said Phillip never refused a request and that he shouldered extra responsibility by learning new tasks and skills so that he could fill in for some lead mechanics. Erin Carlos HGO Benefits Liaison/WC Representative Nominated by John Ferguson, Director of Insurance Erin Carlos was initially introduced to Saia via the COE student program within the local high school. Her nominator said that it was apparent from the start that Erin had a drive and maturity beyond her age. In fact, he said this responsible characteristic has served her well and resulted in Saia offering her a full-time position with the company, which then resulted in her subsequent promotion to her present position. Erin’s productivity is steadfast during all work climates - acquisitions, internal and external audits. In fact, John Ferguson believes her abilities are best proven when there is an unexpected job requirement. Most recently, during an annual W/C acturalist review, Erin completed some extraordinary analysis work. Christina Cenac HGO Insurance Claim Processor Nominated by John Ferguson, Director of Insurance According to her nominator, Christina Cenac’s transfer to the Insurance Department in 2006 was most fortuitous. Indeed her nominator said, she embraced and mastered her new job assignment very quickly and as a certified information and processing technician, she has served Saia very well. In fact, an event just occurred that showed her energetic and ‘can do’ approach to work. During the recent month end and quarter close, there was an unexpected influx of maintenance entries for vehicle losses that had to be cross-checked to the file, posted to the individual electronic case file, and then entered into the system in order for accounting to close properly. Without hesitation, Christina recognized that this was something that had to be done and she took the initiative and completed the entries in record time for the close. Chad Chamberlain JKN Linehaul Driver Nominated by Greg Denkins, JKN TM Chad Chamberlain’s nominator said that not only has he done an outstanding job meeting his departure and arrivals daily, he can depend on him being on time or early each day, which helps the JKN operation meet their customers’ service expectations. In addition to working hard each and every day at the terminal, Chad served in the military in Iraq. He returned home last October. Celson (Tony) De Leon OAK City Driver Nominated by John Dentoni, OAK TM Tony De Leon was nominated because, along with being the driver that picks up his customers’ freight, he took it upon himself to care for any of their sales needs as well after a sales representative at the terminal retired. His nominator said that Saia did not lose one account and that we actually grew business because of Tony’s hard work. His nomination said “This is a person that (deserves) to receive President’s Recognition.” John Filipowicz WPB City Driver Nominated by William Gaige, WPB TM His nominator said John Filipowicz has a great attitude even though he has one of the busiest routes and regularly goes out with 18 or more deliveries and picks up six or more shipments. Customers have complimented Bill Gaige about what a quality driver Saia has in John. Bill said they are glad they have John as a part of the Saia team. Larry Floyd GRL City Driver Nominated by Trey Mauldin, DLS Regional Sales Manager Larry Floyd was nominated because of a letter he received from a Saia customer. In part, it said Larry Floyd has been picking up freight at their location for several years and they consider him an outstanding ambassador for Saia. In fact, they said he not only watches out for Saia’s interests but their interests as well. On more than one occasion, they said Larry has noticed a shipment that is packaged poorly. They said this firstclass service makes them feel their products are being shipped to their customers in good order. Kathy Goodwin ACO Customer Service Representative Nominated by Sally Buchholz, VP of Marketing and Customer Service Kathy Goodwin went above-andbeyond on a general customer service call regarding a pro number that had been in Saia’s system for over one month. The issue had escalated to the regional sales manager. After several attempts to get the shipment delivered, Kathy took the call, identified the problem and asked if she could follow-up with the customer. She then contacted the destination terminal and within 30 minutes called back to confirm when the customer’s freight would be delivered and asked if there was any other follow-up required. Patrick Griffin DLS Linehaul Driver Nominated by Chad Garland, JCY TM Not only does Patrick Griffin have almost 17 years of safe driving, his nominator said, he is always willing to do whatever he can to make sure Saia succeeds. Patrick has sacrificed his family time on Saturdays to make sure the Linehaul Department in DLS meets their goal of 100 percent Smith System training. Additionally, Chad Garland said Patrick always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face no matter the situation. Chad explained, “(Patrick) always says that ‘He appreciates Saia Motor Freight’ and (he) shows it by doing whatever we ask of him.” as helping to integrate The Connection Company and Madison Freight Systems into Saia. Paul has always been a team player and does whatever it takes to get the job done. In fact, Delbert Bryer said the street goals in CCI are one of the highest goals in the company. He said Paul has the attitude that when he gets a call to go somewhere the only question he asks is, “When do I need to be there?” He gives 100 percent all the time and is ready to do whatever it takes. Kyle Jones GRL City Driver Nominated by Mike Whitwell, FON Regional Manager His nominator said Kyle Jones is one of the most cooperative, positive, upbeat individuals they’ve ever met. Indeed, Kyle’s customers love him as well as his peers and supervisors. Kyle is always ready to step in and do whatever he can to satisfy both his internal customers as well as his external customers. Kyle subs in dispatch and on the dock in the absence of supervisors. He willingly took on one of the most challenging delivery routes in the terminal. “Just last Saturday, a customer Harry Hadwin SPT City Driver Nominated by Patrick Lodriguss, SPT TM called me in dire need of a trailer In November 2007, the Shreveport terminal lost an outbound supervisor and, in December, they lost a terminal manager. Harry Hadwin was working the morning shift and was asked to fill in for the outbound supervisor. Without hesitation, he stepped up and filled in by working the position until someone could be hired and trained. He worked the shift until April 2008 when the new supervisor was trained enough to handle outbound on is own. Even though it put a hardship on Harry’s personal life, he was willing to make ‘whatever it takes’ attitude make the sacrifice because it was what was needed to keep the operation going. “He did a great job with a great attitude never complaining once about what he was doing. He is a loyal, dedicated employee who cares about the company,” said his nominator. swap/pick-up. All it took was one call to Kyle and he was on the way to swap the trailer, no questions asked. His professionalism and Kyle a pleasure with which to work,” explained Mike Whitwell. Kent Koontz FWN City Driver Nominated by Patrick Grillo, SBN Dock Supervisor Kent Koontz has the Saia spirit. His nominator said Kent is always willing to go the extra mile including working at the SBN terminal for four weeks helping them with their city operation. Kent had also spent three weeks at the DET terminal. Patrick Grillo said Kent never complains about being displaced and his mind is set on “doing whatever it takes to service the customer.” Anthony (Tony) Kuzmik Paul Howard CCI and HRL Terminal Manager Nominated by Delbert Bryer, Regional Operations Manager RNO Dock His nominator said Paul Howard has been running two terminals and has performed many extra duties such Tony Kuzmik recently completed Mentor Nominated by Shelia Koustoumbardis, Jake Zvanut, and Sonny Yandle, Members of Saia’s Claims Department the dockworker/freight handling/ mentor training held at FON. 3 A monthly newsletter for Saia employees June/July 2008 During the session, Tony continually Chris Murzynsky hour after the call.
