LOGAN — Utah State men's track and field senior sprinter Armahd Lewis has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete
of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 27, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
Lewis, a native of Stockton, Calif., (Edison HS/Sacramento City College) won two individual titles and was named the co-Track Athlete of the Meet in
helping Utah State finish tied for first at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Lewis won the 60m with a career-best time of
6.77 to rank fourth all-time at USU in that event, and also won the 200m in 21.46.
This is Lewis's first USU Athlete of the Week honor of not only the year, but also of his career. It is the third USU award for an Aggie track and field
member, as men's high jumper Clint Silcock earned the accolade on Feb. 7, followed by women's distance runner Ruth Hilton collecting the honor on
Feb. 4.
Those athletes that qualify will be competing in the NCAA National Championships, in College Station, Texas on March 11-12. Clint Silcock is the lone
Aggie who has already qualified when he cleared 2.24m in the high jump at the New Mexico Classic on Feb. 4, for an automatic qualifying mark. The
championship field will be announced on March 7.
If not selected, USU track & field teams will be in preparation for the opening of the outdoor season, which kicks off March 17-19 at the University of
Arizona Willie Williams Invitational at Tucson, Ariz. Utah State's lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational, is Saturday, April 16 at
the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
Nominees from other sports for USU Athlete of the Week include:
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Senior forward Tai Wesley (Provo, Utah) led Utah State to an 84-68 home win against Idaho last weekend. In the game, Wesley
had 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal in 34 minutes as he was 6-of-9 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free
throw line.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Junior forward Ashlee Brown (Chandler, Ariz) led Utah State to a 1-1 home record last week with a 72-61 win against New
Mexico State, followed by a 78-70 loss to Louisiana Tech. Against NMSU, Brown had 21 points and six rebounds to go along with eight assists as she
was 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 13-of-13 from the charity stripe. Against the Lady Techsters, Brown had 16 points and 12 boards for her ninth
double-double of the season as she was 7-of-15 from the field and 2-of-3 at the free throw line. For the week, Brown averaged 18.5 points, 9.0
rebounds and 5.0 assists, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field (11-of-22) and 93.8 percent at the free throw line (15-of-16).
MEN'S GOLF : Sophomore Brendan Dennis (Roosevelt, Utah) carded an even-par 72 during his final round and finished tied for 29th with a 6-over 222
(71-79-72) at the Washington State hosted Snowman Getaway in helping Utah State finish in ninth-place out of 15 teams with a 30-over 894 (283310-301).
GYMNASTICS: Senior Jackie Dillon (Anderson, S.C.) posted a career-high 39.025 in the all-around in Utah State's 196.550-193.150 loss to Utah and
then had a 38.450 in its 195.475-192.650 loss at No. 13 Boise State. Dillon's 39.025 is the team's highest all-around score of the season. She also
scored a career-high 9.850 on floor versus the Utes, as well as a season bests of 9.775 on vault and 9.750 on bars.
MEN'S TENNIS: Senior Bryan Marchant (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted a 3-1 singles record and went 2-2 in doubles play to help Utah State to a 2-2
record last week with wins against Collin County Community College (6-1) and Seminole State College (6-1), and loses at SMU (7-0) and TexasArlington (5-2). Marchant competed at No. 4 singles during the week and recorded a straight sets win against Collin County CC (6-2, 6-0) and a threesets win against Seminole State College (2-6, 6-3, 6-4), followed by a three-sets win against Texas-Arlington (2-6, 6-3, 6-3). with sophomore Sven Poslusny in doubles play at the first position and the duo notched an 8-2 win against Collin County CC and an 8-3 win against
