BRIEF How the “bricks” of socialization brainwash you into becoming a helpless sheep, incapable of defending you or your family. BRIEF: How the “bricks” of socialization brainwash you into becoming a helpless sheep, incapable of defending you or your family. We made a bad deal. Back in the middle of the twentieth century Americans bought into a deal that exchanged their tax dollars for local, state and federal law enforcement. As part of this deal, law-abiding citizens would not need firearms, or would give up their firearms in return for police protection. This seems like a reasonable trade-off, except for two major flaws: 1. We are NOT PROTECTED. Enforcement is not protection. Enforcement occurs after the law has been broken. In other words law enforcement occurs AFTER the crime has been committed, unless you get lucky and a cop can stop a crime in progress. Back in the first half of the twentieth century Americans implicitly bought into a deal that suggested that local, state and federal level police protection would be a good thing. 2. WE HAVE NO OPTION. Taxes fund monopolies for the State to deliver services regardless of the quality of the service or the cost effectiveness of the service. Which means our taxes are literally extorted from us at gunpoint (by the very guns we hired to protect us) for a service that we do not want or would prefer to purchase elsewhere. Sure, if the cops are eating donuts in your coffee shop at that moment in time when a crack addict decides to rob your establishment, then police are a deterrent to crime. But unless you get lucky and have a cop with you 24 hours a day, then you are an easy target for any criminal who understands that they are highly unlikely to get caught red-handed. So, because of this deal, which requires you to let the police handle protection for you - you will most likely be mugged, robbed, beaten and you may lose your life because the police won’t be there when the crime takes place. The only comfort you may get, is that after the crime has been committed, you might be able to see the perpetrator (should you survive the confrontation) brought to justice. But faint comfort that will be, when you understand that had you carried a firearm, and had you received the proper firearms training, you could have prevented the crime from ever happening. In the first half of the twentieth century almost every boy grew up knowing how to fight a fight and fire a gun. It was only in the last half of the twentieth century that we began the process of “socializing” our citizenry into thinking that guns were the problem - and not the criminals wielding them. If you are male, and were born after 1960, then chances are high that you have been the recipient of “socialization” a form of brainwashing designed to neuter young men of the very essence that makes them young men - the ability and the desire to defend themselves and their loved ones. Think of all of the socialization “skills” you have learned in your life as little “bricks of socialization”... Another may be: “Turn the other cheek.” almost all public law enforcement is retrospective, in other words the law enforcement occurs AFTER the crime has been committed. Yet another might be: “Don’t be rude, smile and introduce yourself.” Consider each time you were rewarded for proper behavior or punished for improper behavior as the mortar that holds these bricks of socialization together. Additionally, what we feed our conscious and subconscious (this includes the media, movies, and books we read) also becomes a part of that mortar that holds those little bricks together. As you grow from a child to an adolescent, and finally into an adult, you are continually given more bricks and mortar which end up shaping your view of reality. In essence, you are adding these bricks to the wall of your socialization skills, using the mortar of your subconscious beliefs to cement these little bricks of knowledge together. Soon, you have a pretty grand looking wall of socialization skills solidly accumulated around you, and in this little fortress of socialization skills most people become quite comfortable. This analogy is important because if you are reading this manual* and if you choose to take a course with us, you have proven you are properly socialized. If you get into one of our highly acclaimed courses, you will have gotten there by passing society’s test: namely, the state background check, which you needed in order to purchase your firearm. That is, you have been vetted by the state and have thus proven you are a well socialized being. Otherwise, you would barred from purchasing a firearm, or you would be dead or in jail. Your bricks of knowledge have kept you on the right side of the law and safely behind your wall of socialization. Your socialization wall has been built around you with: • • • • • citizens owned a firearm and knew how to use it then violent crime would fall dramatically. • • • • • • • Proper role models Little to no exposure to juvenile criminal acts Rewards by parents, teachers, and/or spiritual leaders for staying within the ethical code of your society Punishments by parents, teachers and/or spiritual leaders for stepping outside of the moral or ethical code Anger management training with tools such as cognitive restructuring, direct approach problem solving, honor, humor, focusing, persistence, courage, passionate displays, creativity, forgiving, listening, assertive communication techniques, empathy, etc. Sensitivity training, including self-observation, feedback, insight, self-disclosure, universality, group cohesion, hope, vicarious learning, catharsis, etc. Communication skills and techniques The predominant belief that most people are good The belief that violence is bad The idea that you should walk away from bad people and tell an authority or the police to take care of a problem The media you take in via visual and auditory input The books, newspapers, and periodicals you read In a perfect world, these bricks of knowledge would not be a bad paradigm with which to build your wall of socialization skills. But we don’t live in a perfect world do we? And very bad things do happen to good people, if for no other reason than that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Routine social interactions will make up the majority of your life experiences. The little bricks of knowledge and proper socialization practices that you and society have carefully built up around you, can become a mental cell, from which you cannot escape, in the rare cases when you run into the truly asocial violent conflict. This happens because in all that planning and building, no one ever taught you how to properly build that vital doorway/emergency access to the world of violence that exists outside of your safe little encasement, simply because the odds are so low that you will become a victim of violent crime. One in a series of briefs offered by Pulse O2DA Firearms Training, Inc. on topics of interest to the firearms training community. This means that your snug little socialization cell can easily become the tomb you are buried under when your cell of socialization comes crashing down around you simply because you had no emergency exit or windows to crawl out of in time of emergency. If you are like a majority of us, no one taught you, you came to the realization of the risk, realized that the risks merited action, and sought out training on your own behalf. There is a real probability that you are here because while on some level you realize that while your odds of facing an asocial person or group may be very small, you also realize that the point is not what your odds are, because if you do end up in that small percentage, the statistics become irrelevant. If you are male, and were born after 1960, then chances are high that you have been the recipient of “socialization” Consider that lethal violence has happened to people . . . • in a buffet line trying to getting something to eat (23 people murdered in Luby’s Cafeteria, Killen, Texas on October the 16th, 1991, by George Jo Hennard) • attending a class (32 people murdered at Virginia Polytechnics Institute and State University on April the 16th, 2006 by Seung-Hui Cho) • at home minding their own business when it’s invaded, and a wife and two daughters are brutally raped, murdered, and then burned (Cheshire, Connecticut on July 24th, 2008 by parolees Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steve Hayes) • or any one of the other 32,068,368 other victims of violent crime (1987-2006 FBI Uniform Crime Report). If you are one among the minority included in the above statistics, you don’t care about the statistical probabilities; now it’s real and it’s you and/or your loved ones. Now it’s a personal and potentially lethal situation with a lifetime of trauma and mental anguish, even if you should survive such an asocial encounter. Therefore, you have decided that while the odds of such an encounter are small, you choose not to risk ending your life prematurely and certainly not without a good fight. There is one more point to consider. While the odds of you ever facing a lethal threat confrontation may be small - and therefor you may choose not to purchase a weapon or undergo training - you should also consider the impact that owning a firearm and receiving proper training has as a deterrence to violence. If most law abiding citizens owned a firearm, and knew how to use it, then violent crime would fall dramatically. Crooks, muggers, thugs, robbers, murderers would all think twice before inflicting their mayhem if they knew their prey were most likely armed and dangerous. In other words, the simple act of owning and getting training allows you to fight crime - even if you never draw your weapon. One in a series of briefs offered by Pulse O2DA Firearms Training, Inc. on topics of interest to the firearms training community. We realize that the statistics don’t matter when you are in that small percentage of good people who end up in front of asocial people willing to kill without a second thought. Unfortunately, while there are an abundance of schools that can teach a lot about firearm handling and shooting on a range, there is a conspicuous lack of schools that are capable of training people for the reality of a lethal force encounter. Please don’t get the wrong impression here; we are not criticizing proper socialization skills, for if we don’t have proper socialization skills our society will fall apart. Nor are we trying to destroy your wall of proper socialization skills. A bad deal entered into with good intentions, but a deal that has left most Americans defenseless as a new born sheep. We want you to understand that you MADE A bad deal. A bad deal entered into with good intentions, but a deal that has left most Americans defenseless as a new born sheep. What Pulse helps you to do better than anyone else out there - is to help you open an area (creating an emergency access door) that will allow you to exit your mental cell when necessary, while adding more bricks of knowledge (skills) so that you can expand the hypothetical cell into a much more comfortable living area in your mind. With the further accumulation of knowledge and expansion into an even more comfortable dwelling space, we are able to further increase your comfort level while also increasing both the amount and size of your emergency access doors, thereby providing true safety and security via an increase of options, instead of leaving you mentally trapped in your claustrophobic cell of socialization. With these additional options available, you can now take the initiative in your actions, rather than waiting for someone to do something to you so you can react to them. As you will learn, this increase in options is both safer for you, and safer for society as a whole, as you won’t feel trapped having to act because you don’t see your options, you will feel freed, choosing when and how to act appropriately when it’s necessary. In the end, you will be greatly empowered to make faster, smarter and safer decisions for yourself and society because you will no longer be trapped in your socialization cell, but you will be free to chose what you should do, how and when to do what you need to do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. * Portions of this Brief were excerpted from the Pulse O2DA Firearms Training Inc., Strategy Manual available for sale at www.pulsefirearmstraining.com.
