An addictive, domestic psychological
thriller for fans of The Girl on the Train and
I Let You Go
A marriage. A meeting. A murder.
Newly-qualified lawyer Lily is determined to

Ed, a struggling artist, doesn’t actually love her, and then there’s her own lie
about her brother, whose death is a forbidden subject. And there’s also Joe,
the client in Lily’s first criminal defence case, a man who is accused of

Lily is not the only one with a talent for untruths. Carla, her 9-year-old
neighbour, has already learnt that lying can get her what she wants – and she
doesn’t care who gets hurt.

Christmas Eve, 1985. The shaved, exsanguinated

the little finger from his right hand.
A week later, Alex Masterton, the 15-year-old stepdaughter of the British
Ambassador, goes missing. Army Intelligence Officer, Tom Fox, posted to
Moscow is asked to help find her. It’s a shot at redemption.
Fox’s investigation drags him deeper towards the dark heart of a Soviet

the girl’s mother, for her safety. A flayed cat, hung by its hind legs from the

And if Fox can’t find Alex soon, it looks as if she could become a sadistic

doomed road trip
In Edinburgh’s lunatic asylum, a patient escapes as

PARADISE LODGE
Nina Stibbe
“In Stibbe’s hands, I laughed hard, page
after page. Brisk, ruthless, understated,
English comedy gold” The Times
By the bestselling author of the Love, Nina
memoir and the hugely acclaimed novel, Man at
the Helm, Paradise Lodge is the fabulous follow-up
by one of the funniest writers around.
This is the story of Lizzie, a 15-year-old girl who finds herself working in a
ramshackle old people's home in the English suburbs. It is the late 1970s so
there aren't many rules and regulations (hence a totally unqualified teenager
taking on a full-time job...) and the place is in chaos - there's a much swisher
old people's home nearer the supermarket and with better parking which is
taking all the best patients; Matron seems to be utterly without qualifications
and Lizzie has no idea what she's doing.
But the longer Lizzie stays, the more she finds out about the residents and the
staff - uncovering a love affair and a plot to kidnap one of the residents, as well
as discovering how not to wash false teeth or give an old lady a bath. Very
funny, tender and wonderfully gripping, Paradise Lodge is a celebration of chaos,
love and old people.
Love, Nina was a 2013 ‘Book of the Year’ twelve times and has now sold 78,000
copies across all editions. Her début novel Man at the Helm has sold over
50,000 copies. Love, Nina will be a 5-part BBC1 TV series in spring 2016
scripted by Nick Hornby and starring Helena Bonham Carter, and the US TV
rights have been sold to Harvey Weinstein. Film rights to Man at the Helm have
also been sold. Nina’s many fans include: Nick Hornby, Marian Keyes, Deborah
Moggach, Maria Semple, Andrew O’Hagan, John Lanchester, Catherine O’Flynn
and Lisa Jewell, amongst many others.

DEAR WORLD, HOW ARE YOU?
Toby Little
The charming true story of an inquisitive
little boy who decided to write to every
country in the world
Two years ago, 5-year-old Toby decided he’d like
to write to someone in every country, to find out
more about the world we live in. With his Mum’s
encouragement, he set about hand-writing letters
to research scientists in Antarctica, game-keepers in Chad and to a very
famous South African president...
Nearly everyone he wrote to responded, sometimes sending photos, recipes
or drawings, telling Toby a little about where they lived - how they lived, what
food they ate, what school was like, and, importantly for Toby (as someone
very interested in dinosaurs), whether there were fossils.
This book is the result, bringing together the huge variety of replies that Toby
received. Charming, touching and fascinating, this is a book that shows that the
world is as big as your imagination and that it is full of potential friends, waiting
to be discovered, no matter where you live...
When 5-year-old Toby asked his Mum, "Can I write a letter to the world?" she
never imagined that a little summer project would turn into a 2-year
challenge, leading to news stories across the globe. Toby has now written, with
the help of his Mum Sabine, letters to all 193 UN countries, and all the US
States (the only one he’s not heard back from, at the time of writing, is South
Dakota...) Toby loves learning at school and is keen on archaeology, history
and particularly, fossils. This is his first book. He is now 7 years old.

EVERY THING WE TOUCH
A 24-Hour Inventory of Our Lives
Paula Zuccotti
The Sartorialist meets Information is
Beautiful - a unique visual diary of the
objects we touch in a day
What’s the first thing we touch when we wake
up? How do our favourite things reveal our
hopes and fears? Can objects tell the story of
our lives?
Imagine how your day would look if you recorded everything that you
touched. From smartphone to soap, from spice to spoon... what if they were
all brought together in one place? Would they tell a bigger story?
Driven by this idea, Paula Zuccotti travelled around the world to find people
from an array of ages, cultures, professions and backgrounds. She asked them
to document every object they touched in 24 hours. Then she gathered those
objects together and photographed them in a single shot.
From a toddler in Tokyo to a cowboy in Arizona, from a cleaner in London to
a cloister nun in Madrid, Every Thing We Touch is their story told through the
objects they own, consume, need, choose, treasure and can’t let go. Each
image is a moment in time: a life and a world reflected back at us.
Paula Zuccotti is an ethnographer, industrial designer, trends forecaster and
the founder of TheOverworld, a creative consultancy. Paula speaks regularly at
international events about design and innovation, and as an artist, she works

fulfilling life. The actions come under one of four categories - MIND, FOOD,
MOVE and LOVE - with expert hosts for each section, including Jamie Oliver
for the food actions.
Give this book one minute of your time each day to focus on completing one
micro-action - eat more fruit, take the stairs, carry out a random act of
kindness - and it will help you towards living a happier, more fulfilled life.
“Micro-actions train us to succeed every day and lead to lasting self
improvement. Micro is actually huge”

Carlo Ancelotti
The legendary football coach finally tells
his story and reveals his management
secrets
Carlo Ancelotti is one of the greatest
managers of all time, with five Champions

IN ORDER TO LIVE
A North Korean Girl’s Journey to
Freedom
Yeonmi Park
The incredible autobiography of Yeonmi
Park: a North Korean defector who
escaped across the Gobi desert and is now
a leading spokesperson for human rights at
just 21 years old
Yeonmi Park was not dreaming of freedom when
she escaped from North Korea. She didn’t even know what it meant to be
free. All she knew was that she was running for her life, that if she and her
family stayed behind they would die - from starvation, or disease, or even
execution.
This book is the story of Yeonmi’s struggle to survive in the darkest, most
repressive country on earth; her harrowing escape to South Korea through
China’s underworld of smugglers and human traffickers; and her emergence as
a leading human rights activist - all before her 21st birthday.
Yeonmi Park was born in Hyesan, North Korea in 1993 and currently lives in
New York, where she is studying and interning at the UN.

coal-mining family to global celebrity status. He will chart the stories behind

Work and Life
Dave Brailsford
An inspirational guide to leadership and
winning from the world’s best cycling
coach
This is the riveting account of how Dave
Brailsford turned the GB cycling team into the
most successful Olympic team ever. Responsible
for the triumphs of Hoy, Pendleton et al, he also masterminded three British
victories in the Tour de France with Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome with
Team Sky.
Brailsford lays bare his motivational methods and management skills, from his
philosophy of making marginal gains to maximise results, to achieving
remarkable individual and team successes by alligning goal harmonies. These
principles can be applied to sports teams, businesses and for personal
development.
Dave Brailsford is the general manager of Team Sky and former performance
director of British Cycling. In 2012 his rider Bradley Wiggins became the first
Briton ever to win the Tour de France. He repeated the feat with Chris
Froome, who won the 2013 and 2015 Tour de France under his management.
At the London Olympics, GB cyclists delivered 8 golds, and Brailsford was
awarded a Knighthood in the Queen’s New Years Honours.

TOTAL INTOXICATION
Drug Use in the Third Reich
Norman Ohler
“Very good and extremely interesting… a
serious piece of scholarship very
well-researched.” Ian Kershaw
When Hitler’s armies invaded France in the Spring
of 1940 they were driven forward not only by
Nazi ideology and Blitzkrieg strategy, but by many
millions of methamphetamines. It has long been
known that senior Nazis, most importantly Hitler himself and Goering, were
reliant on chaotic mixtures of stimulants, but in this truly startling new book,
Norman Ohler makes clear that the whole Third Reich was awash with drugs.
The political party that had first come to prominence in part through
campaigns to ‘clean up’ the drug-taking in Weimar Berlin itself rapidly fell prey
to crystal meth, cocaine, steroids and heroin.
Drawing on a huge range of sources, Total Intoxication is a serious, disturbing
and revelatory new book, which will rethink how we describe the Second
World War. Ohler is careful to make clear that drugs cannot be blamed for
the vicious nature of Nazi ideology, but shows that in areas as various as
endurance, decision-making and combat-readiness, often poorly understood
stimulants were often central. This was as true for tank commanders in France
as desperate troops trapped on the Eastern Front, as true for fighter-pilots as
for Hitler himself, retaining a euphoric self-confidence in 1944 through heroin.
Norman Ohler, born in 1970, is an award-winning German journalist and
writer of novels and film scripts. He spent five years researching Total
Intoxication in archives in Germany and the US, and speaking to eyewitnesses,
military historians and doctors. It has already sold in Italy (Rizzoli) and the
Netherlands (Luitingh Sijthoff).

THE INVENTION OF SCIENCE
A New History of the Scientific Revolution
David Wootton
The first major history of the Scientific
Revolution in more than a generation, by
one of the UK's leading intellectual
historians
We live in a world made by science. How and
when did this happen? This book tells the story
of the extraordinary intellectual and cultural
revolution that gave birth to modern science, and mounts a major challenge to
the prevailing orthodoxy of its history.
Before 1492 it was assumed that all significant knowledge was already available;
there was no concept of progress; people looked for understanding to the past
not the future. This book argues that everything changed with the discovery of
America, which demonstrated that new knowledge was possible: indeed it
introduced the very concept of "discovery", and opened the way to the
invention of science.
David Wootton is Anniversary Professor of History at the University of York.
His previous books include Paolo Sarpi (1983), Bad Medicine (2006) and Galileo
(2010). He has given the Raleigh Lecture at the British Academy (2008), the
Carlyle Lectures at Oxford (2014) and the Benedict Lectures at Boston (2014).
“…a fantastic revisionist history, an intellectual feat and a marvellous attack on
those academics who believe that ‘retrospective history’ written with the
outcome in mind – is wrong. It will… become a landmark in the discipline of
the history of science”.

SOMME
Into the Breach
Hugh Sebag-Montefiore
An extraordinary and fresh account of the
most famous battle in World War One
No conflict better encapsulates all that went
wrong on the Western Front than the Battle of
the Somme in 1916. The tragic loss of life and
stoic endurance by troops who walked towards
their death is an iconic image.
Despite this despairing picture, Hugh Sebag-Montefiore’s book shows the
extent to which the Allied armies in fact repeatedly broke through the German
front lines. By focusing on the first-hand experiences of both Allied and enemy
soldiers, the author weaves a remarkable portrait of life at the Front.
Hugh Sebag-Montefiore’s best-selling books are Enigma: The Battle for the Code
and Dunkirk, reissued this year. He lives in north London with his wife and
three children.
Praise for Dunkirk:
“Hugh Sebag-Montefiore tells [the story] with gusto, a remarkable attention to
detail and an inexhaustible appetite for tracking down the evidence”
Richard Overy, Telegraph

better than this”

THE CALIPHATE
Hugh Kennedy
A crucial guide to understanding how the
idea of the caliphate has evolved to shape
Islamic history
An influence in political Islam dating back to the
Qur’an itself, the concept of the caliphate has
been a motive and inspirational force - for good
and for evil - for over 1400 years. Yet despite
this idea’s resurgence within certain Islamist
movements, the term is still widely misunderstood by Muslims and nonMuslims alike.
In this long-overdue historical survey, Hugh Kennedy traces the development
of this ideology from the early political struggles and bloody conflicts of the
Umayyads and Abbassids to its revival during the Ottoman Empire, and to the
sudden emergence of Islamic State as a credible political and military force.
Hugh Kennedy is Professor of Arabic in the Faculty of Languages and Cultures
at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He studied Arabic at the
Middle East Centre for Arabic Studies before reading Arabic, Persian and
History at Cambridge. He was formerly a Professor of History at the
University of St. Andrews, a position he had held since 1972. He was elected
Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2000.

THE PENGUIN HISTORY OF VIETNAM
Christopher Goscha
The first general history for a general
audience of one of Asia’s most fascinating
and complex countries
The Vietnamese are in the unusual situation of
being both colonizers themselves and the victims
of colonization by others. Their country
expanded, shrunk, split and sometimes
disappeared, often under circumstances far
beyond their control. Despite these often overwhelming pressures Vietnam
has survived and is universally recognized as one of Asia’s most striking and
complex cultures.
As more and more visitors come to this extraordinary country, there has been
for some years a need for a major history - a book which allows the outsider
to understand the many complex layers left by earlier emperors, rebels, priests
and colonizers. Vietnam’s role in one of the Cold War’s longest conflicts has
meant that its past has been endlessly abused for propaganda purposes and it is
perhaps only now that the events which created the modern state can be seen
through a truly historical perspective.
Christopher Goscha is a leading expert on Vietnam, and this book draws on
the latest research and discoveries in Vietnamese, French and English. He is
Professor of History at the University of Quebec in Canada. He studied at
Georgetown University and the Sorbonne, and has written extensively about
many of the different regions of Indo-China.

A kaleidoscopic, polyphonic portrait of
contemporary Rio, for readers of Roberto

kaleidoscopic portrait of this city and its history
of conflict and corruption.
Award-winning novelist, ex-government minister and sociologist Luiz Eduardo
Soares, a born and bred Carioca, tells the story of Rio through the everyday

migrant workers, each with their own version of the city. Taking us on a
journey into Rio’s intricate world of favelas, beaches and corridors of power,
Soares reveals one of the most extraordinary cities in the world in all its
seething, combative beauty.
Luiz Eduardo Soares is an academic, a politician, an activist and a writer.

Stories from Ukraine
Tim Judah
The human story behind the headlines
about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine
In this evocative, engaging and compelling book of
reportage, Economist correspondent Tim Judah
explores the impact of the ongoing war on the
inhabitants of the second largest country in
Europe, and delves into the attitudes that
underpin the conflict. What does it mean to be Ukrainian today?
‘Every now and then I can hear distant explosions and bursts of gunfire. But most of
the time here in the centre of Sloviansk, eastern Ukraine’s separatist stronghold,
everything is quiet. Since the small town is chopped up by barricades and many
businesses and factories have closed down, there is not much going on, so that when
the wind blows you can hear it shimmer the leaves of the silver birches that line the
streets. If you were looking for war here, it would be hard to find.’
Tim Judah writes for the New York Review of Books and the Economist, most
recently on the situation in Ukraine. In his career he has covered the aftermath
of communism in Romania and Bulgaria and the war in Yugoslavia for The Times
and the Economist. His most recent books are Kosovo: What Everyone Needs to
Know and The Serbs: History, Myth and the Destruction of Yugoslavia.
“Visceral, gripping, heart-breaking and often shocking, based on interviews with
witnesses and victims on the ground, In Wartime is both astute political analysis
and vivid war reportage of what’s really happening in the dirty war in Ukraine
by a veteran observer of the Balkan wars who truly understands the
complexities and nuances of the wars on Europe's peripheries”

TIDE
The Science and Lore of the Greatest
Force on Earth
Hugh Aldersey-Williams
From Canute to D-Day: the history and
science of the ever-powerful tide explored
for the first time
Half of the world’s population today lives in
coastal regions lapped by tidal waters. But it
rises and falls according to rules that are a
mystery to almost all of us.
To fully grasp the influence of the tide, we must bring together centuries of
science but also the literary history and folklore it has inspired: mistaken by
Caesar, captured in the art of Turner and now puzzled over by the world’s
leading researchers. With Aldersey-Williams as our guide, chasing the most
feared and celebrated tides around the world, from Venice to Canada to the
original maelstrom in Scandinavia, for the first time its effects on our
civilization become startlingly clear.
Hugh Aldersey-Williams studied natural
sciences at Cambridge. He is the author of
several bestselling books exploring science,
design and architecture - including Periodic Tales,
Anatomies and The Adventures of Sir Thomas
Browne in the 21st Century - and has curated
exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum

THE LANGUAGE OF CITIES
Deyan Sudjic
The director of the Design Museum
defines the greatest artefact of all time:
the city
We live in a world that is now predominantly
urban. So how do we define the city as it evolves
in the twenty-first century?
Drawing examples from across the globe, Deyan
Sudjic decodes the underlying forces that shape our cities, such as resources
and land, to the ideas that shape conscious elements of design, whether of
building or space. Erudite and entertaining, he considers the differences
between capital cities and the rest to understand why it is that we often feel
more comfortable in our identities as Londoners, Muscovites, or Mumbaikars
than in our national identities.
Deyan Sudjic is the director of the Design Museum. He was born in London,
and studied architecture in Edinburgh. He has worked as a critic for the
Observer and the Sunday Times, as the editor of Domus in Milan, as the director
of the Venice architecture biennale, and as a curator in Glasgow, Istanbul and
Copenhagen. He is the author of B is for Bauhaus, The Language of Things and

THE GREAT ECONOMISTS
Linda Yueh
Exploring the most important ideas of
the past three centuries - and their
importance today
Since the days of Adam Smith, economists have
grappled with a series of familiar problems - but
often their ideas are hard to digest, never mind
applying them to today’s issues. Linda Yueh is
renowned for her combination of erudition, as
an accomplished economist herself, and accessibility, as a leading writer and
broadcaster in this field. In The Great Economists she explains the key thoughts
of history’s greatest economists, and how they could help with the policy
challenges that we face today.
In the light of current economic problems, and in particular economic growth,
Yueh explores the thoughts of economists from Smith and Ricardo to
contemporary academics Douglass North and Robert Solow. Along the way
she asks, for example, how would Karl Marx judge the path that the Chinese
economy is going down? And how would John Maynard Keynes, who argued
for government spending to bring the economy back to full employment, view
the actions of governments today?
Linda Yueh is a Fellow in Economics at Oxford University, Adjunct Professor
of Economics at London Business School and Visiting Professor of Economics
at Peking University. The former Economics Editor at Bloomberg TV, she also
hosted Talking Business with Linda Yueh as Chief Business Correspondent for
BBC News. She writes for The Times, the New York Times and the Financial
Times and has advised, among others, the World Bank and World Economic
Forum in Davos. She has written and edited academic books on China,
globalisation and macroeconomics. This is her first trade book.

CRIME FICTIONS
Tom Gash
The hidden truths about why people
really commit crime, and why our views
of it are wrong
The way we see and understand crime falls
into two types of story that, in essence, have
been told and retold many times throughout
human history - in fiction, as in fact.
Criminality is either a selfish choice, an aberration; or a forced choice, the
product of social factors. These two stories continue to dominate both our
views of and responses to crime. And, says Tom Gash, they are completely
wrong.
In seeking to dispel the myths that surround and inform our views of crime,
Crime Fictions argues that our obsession with ‘big arguments’ about crime’s
causes can lead us to mistake individual cases as proof of universal rules. How,
he asks, can we suspend our knee-jerk reactions, and begin to understand
crime for what it is: as a risk that can be managed and reduced.
Tom Gash is Director of Research at the Institute for Government. He is a
regular commentator on public service reform, on BBC radio and television,
and in print. He lives in London, and this is his first book.

THE EUROPEAN UNION
A Pelican Introduction
Chris Bickerton
A timely introduction to the European
Union - its history, its politics, and its role from a leading political scientist
For most of us today, ‘Europe’ refers to the
European Union. At the centre of a seemingly
never-ending crisis, the EU remains a black box,
closed to public understanding. Is it a state? An
empire? Is Europe ruled by Germany or by European bureaucrats? Does a
single European economy exist after all these years of economic integration?
And should the EU have been awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2012? Critics
tell us the EU undermines democracy. Are they right?
In this provocative volume, political scientist Chris Bickerton provides an
answer to all these key questions and more, at a time when understanding
what the EU is and what it does is more important than ever before.
Chris Bickerton is a University Lecturer in Politics at the Department of
Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge and a Fellow in
politics at Queens’ College, Cambridge. He has previously taught at Oxford,
University of Amsterdam, and Sciences Po in Paris. His books include European
Integration (2012) and he writes frequently for the international media. He has
published articles in the New York Times, the Nation, the Financial Times and the
Wall Street Journal. He has been writing regularly for Le Monde Diplomatique

From a London Kitchen
Shu Han Lee
A fresh, easy and seasonal Southeast
Asian cookbook from a popular food
blogger
When Shu Han Lee moved from Singapore to
London she was just 18, and homesickness

travelling and a series of pop-up food events inspired her to develop her
repertoire into other cuisines of Southeast Asia, from Thailand to the
Philippines. This book is the result.
The recipes range from Hainanese chicken and Vietnamese vegetable summer
rolls, to steamed pork belly buns and BBQ sambal lemon sole - all simple to
prepare and with unforgettable flavours.
Shu Han Lee is a graphic designer and freelance food stylist, writer and cook.
The Sunday Times named her as one of Britain’s best food bloggers. She has
over 50,000 Instagram followers and frequently hosts supper clubs, pop-ups
