PENGUINS (Ideas for K/1)
I can't remember where I saw this idea it, but it was
somewhere off the net and it's really cute! It's for penguin
finger puppets. You take empty film canisters and cut the
lid in half. Glue the lid halves to each side to make wings,
cut an oval piece of white paper/material for it's tummy, add
wiggle eyes and orange for a beak! I thought it sounded
really cute! I haven't got to try it yet but I plan to this
January!
>Here's a cute song to the tune of I'm a Little Teapot
I'm a little penguin,
on the ice.
I think the cold is very nice.
I can hop around
first once, then twice.
I think ice is very nice.
Also, when I taught a penguin unit, we acted out the father
penguins guarding the eggs on their feet while the moms "waddled"
away to eat. We used plastic Easter eggs. The kids enjoyed that!
I made penguins with my Kinders this year using construction
paper and wiggly eyes. You first cut two 1 1/2" strips from
black construction paper. Cut one of the strips to 3/4 its
original size. Glue both into loops, then glue one on top of
the other. The small loop is the head and the large one is the
body. Turn the penguin so that you are looking at the side not
the open loops. Cut an oval for the tummy, a triangle for the
beak and ovals/hearts for the wings and feet. Use googly eyes
to finish off. If you put them on a bulletin board with ice or
snow, you can angle them so that they look to be slipping and
sliding. One of ours even did a loop in the air. I hope this
helps it's kind of hard to describe!
One cute idea is Penguin Bowling or Ice Bowling-Use a 2 liter bottle.
-Wrap it with black construction paper. One the front of the
bottle make a body and head out of white construction paper.
Draw eyes on the head with a black marker. Use orange
construction paper triangles to make the beak. Use orange
construction paper to make the feet and glue at the bottom
of the bottle.
-Cut the toe out of bright colored sock. Put the sock on the
top of the bottle using a rubber band to hold it in place.
From the toe to the neck of the bottle cut strips in the sock. Turn the strips down and
youhave its hat.
-Use soft balls to roll and try to knock the penguin down.
(You can pretend they are snowballs.)
I hope this description gives you enough information.
It's was hard for me to do without looking at an example.
When I taught second grade, we did a penguin unit. We ate
penguin food. We ate "krill" (a Ritz cracker with cream
cheese and tiny shrimp on top). We ate starfish sandwiches
which were sandwiches cut with a star shaped cookie cutter.
The filling was tuna salad. For dessert, we had goldfish
crackers. The children loved this activity.
* "I Know a Little Penguin"
To the tune "I'm a little teapot"
I know a little penguin
Who sat on some blocks
He swam in the ocean
And he Climbed on some rocks
He snapped at a seagull
He snapped at a seal
He snapped at a fish
Oh, what a meal!
* (3 songs to the tune: I'm a little teapot)
- I'm a little penguin
On the ice.
I think cold is very nice.
I can hop around first once, then twice.
I think ice is very nice.
- I'm a little penguin
Round and fat
Here is my beak,
Here is my hat.
Winter days are coming,
Hear me shout,
"Please don't toss
My mittens out!"
- I'm a little penguin,
Black and white.
Short and wobbly,
An adorable sight.
I can’t fly at all,
But I love to swim.
so I’ll waddle to the water
and dive right in!
