Huntsville Alabama Colleges and Universities Alabama A&M University – Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) Alabama A&M was recognized originally by an act of the Alabama State Legislature in 1873 as the State Normal School and University for the Education of the Colored Teachers and Students. Almost over a century the University has changed its name many times and finally in 1969 the University adopted its current name. The University offers baccalaureate and graduate studies to all skilled, capable individuals who are interested in further developing their technical, professional, and scholastic skills and competencies. Alabama A&M is the leading producer of African-American Ph.D.’s and is the only 1890 land grant university offering four Ph.D. degree programs. Athletics- Bulldogs Alabama A&M's sports teams participate in NCAA Division I in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Oakwood University (Oakwood University of Seventh-day Adventists) Originated in 1896, Oakwood University, formerly Oakwood College, has been a member of the United Negro College Fund since 1964 and has been listed among the Best Colleges in the Southern Region and positioned 27th on the list of Best Black Colleges by the U.S. News & World Report. Owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Oakwood is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Department of Education of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to award the associate and baccalaureate degrees. Athletics- Ambassadors Basketball is the most important sport on campus during the spring semesters. The school's basketball teams are the Oakwood Ambassadors and Lady Ambassadors. The Ambassadors male basketball team gained the 2008 National Championship for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and was the team’s first year as part of the league. Intramural sports offered at Oakwood are men and women’s basketball, soccer, track & field, volleyball, and women’s soccer. Calhoun Community College Calhoun Community College is a two-year institution of higher learning in Decatur, Alabama and is the prevalent of the 27 two-year schools comprising the Alabama Community College System. Offering 49 associate degree programs and 52 career/certificate programs, Calhoun serves just over 9,000 students at its 110-acre Decatur campus, its Huntsville/Cummings Research Park site, at Redstone Arsenal, and at the Limestone Correctional Facility. The school is named after John C. Calhoun, the 7th Vice-President of the United States and was a War Hawk of 1812; therefore the Calhoun athletic teams names. Athletics- Warhawks Calhoun Community College participates in baseball and softball in the Alabama Community College Conference. University of Alabama- Huntsville (UAH) The University of Alabama in Huntsville is a state supported, public, and coeducational university. The university enrolls approximately 7,100 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees. The university is organized in five colleges: business, engineering, liberal arts, nursing and science. UAH is renowned for its engineering and science programs, such as astrophysics and atmospheric science and is one of three members of the University of Alabama System. Those members include the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the flagship university, the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa which all operates independently. Athletics- Chargers UAH is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and fields 13 varsity teams at the Division II level and one in Division I, ice hockey. The University’s ice hockey team won the NCAA Division II national championship in 1996 and 1998 and currently competes in Division I as a member of College Hockey America. UAH is the only NCAA ice hockey program south of the Mason-Dixon Line. UAH also sponsors men and women’s soccer, cross country, basketball, tennis, track & field, women’s volleyball, women’s softball, and men’s baseball.
