Our Usability Team has learned a great deal about ordering leis for special occasions and we believe the information included in this report will be of great value to you and your design experts. We conducted our evaluation between July 28 and August 5, 2005. Although your website contains all the information we were looking for, most of our users felt that the home page of the website was crowded and confusing. Our users took extra time finding the information we requested. Many felt that the website left them confused and made it more difficult to complete the tasks we asked of them. Your website is a valuable tool for all people interested in purchasing leis for special occasions. Our usability test consisted of a series of tasks to be performed by typical users of the Internet, both inexperienced and experienced. Enclosed in the report we have included some recommendations for making your website an even better source of information. We have enjoyed becoming more acquainted with your website and would be happy to answer any questions concerning this report. We started by studying the demographics of typical users of the website. We found that users typically range in age from around fifteen years of age to around sixty years of age. Time of year also seems to play a part in the use of the site. Graduation time seems to herald in more business for the site. We chose our test subjects based on the actual demographics of users of the site to simulate actual transactions that occur on the site. Our study was conducted between July 28 and August 5, 2005. Our objective was to identify potential problems with the website, including navigation, content, and loading time. Once potential problems were identified, we developed a usability test consisting of six tasks to be performed. Our testing group consisted of fourteen people ranging from inexperienced to very experienced web users. The tasks we asked them to perform tested the usability and performance of the Get Lei’d Flowers website. The usability test consisted of the following six tasks: • • • • • • What is the NBC Special? You want to contact the owner for a possible business venture. What is his name, e-mail, and phone number? You want to buy a lei for your friend John's graduation. Find a lei appropriate for him. You want to buy the most expensive lei for a friend. Find this lei. Add these two leis to you shopping cart. What is your subtotal for these two items? How much is your order WITH shipping? The answers and comments collected from every subject were analyzed and compared to find the effectiveness of the web site. Most users agreed that they would use the site again. Some users stated that the graphics on the site were attractive, while others felt that the graphics distracted from the message of the site. Overall, most users stated that the color scheme was pleasing to the eye. After we analyzed the information, we discovered that there are several problems with the website. The home page is cluttered and overcrowded, the content of the web site lacks clear descriptions, and more information is needed about the leis themselves. We also found that the shopping cart was not easy to use. Some users stated that they would probably give up before they actually ordered anything. Based on these findings, we recommend that the website de-clutter the home page, categorize the leis with descriptions, and add a Frequently Asked Questions page. We feel that it is important to add descriptions to the leis, including a description not only of what the lei is made of, but also of traditional uses and history of the lei. We also recommend that the shopping cart on the site be reworked to integrate more fully with the web site. Overall, the web site can use some improvement. We feel that if these changes are applied, the web site will improve drastically. We also feel that with these changes, users will feel less intimidated shopping on the website, leading to an increased profit margin. Our study was conducted between July 28 and August 5, 2005. Our objective was to identify potential problems with the web site, including navigation, content, and loading time. After visiting the website we decided to conduct a usability test, to see if the average person (customer) would find the web page to be user friendly. In order to assure a complete bias observation of the website, we designed a usability test consisting of six tasks to be performed. Our testing group consisted of fourteen people ranging from inexperienced to very experienced web users. After completing the tasks, our participant’s were encouraged to comment on what they felt was wrong with the web page as well as make suggestion of how they believed what would make it more user friendly. After we analyzed the information we discovered that there are several problems with the website, such as the home page is clutter, more importantly it lacks a clear description and information regarding the Lei’s. Based on these findings, we recommended de-cluttering the home page, provide more information and descriptions about each Lei. Add a frequently asked question page also reworked the shopping cart to integrate more fully with the web site. Overall, the web site can use some improvement. We feel that if these changes are applied the web site will improve drastically. We also feel that with these changes, users will feel less intimidated shopping on the website, leading to an increased profit margin. Overview 1 Background Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide the client, Get Lei’d Vegas, with feedback as well as recommendations on their existing website, www.getleidflowers.com. These recommendations will be based on both research and on customer surveys. These recommendations will help the client reach their goals of increased sales. The Company In order to complete a thorough Usability Study for www.getleidflowers.com, we first needed to research the company, the website, and its functions. We sorted through the information from our findings, and identified several key points from which we based our usability study on: • • The Company o Get Lei’d Vegas’ goal is to sell leis to the Las Vegas area o Owner Willie Salave'a already has successful lei businesses in Southern California, Get Lei’d San Diego o He is expanding to Las Vegas because he believes it has a niche market for leis The Website o Primary function is to handle the customer sales o Secondary functions, such as providing contact information, all exist in order to maximize lei sales o Goals can be reached if the website is easy to use, informative, and visually pleasing to the customer Preliminary Research Since this study is to provide the client with useful recommendations for the website, it was necessary to research the demographics of the site users. We found the customers had a wide age range (about 15-60). Ethnicity was not a factor, however in general more females purchase Get Lei’d flowers than males. Time of the year also played a role in the demographics of the customer. For example, during graduation time, most of the customers were either parents or friends (mostly college age) of the graduates. It was important to survey a sample of individuals that was comparable to Get Lei’d’s actual customer mix. In addition, recommendations for the site itself were based on the fact that customers are of all different age ranges, gender, and ethnicity. Next, we examined the actual website. We observed the visual design, ease of navigation, content, and functionality of the site. Based on our initial impressions, we decided which parts of the website could be improved. In addition, we compared www.getleidflowers.com to similar websites. We disregarded websites that we felt were inferior, but looked at websites such as www.hawaiiflowerlei.com that we felt had many good ideas. Lastly, we asked our client, Get Lei’d Vegas, for specific ideas that they had and then fit that into our survey. Background 2 The Survey We created the Usability Study Survey based on our preliminary research. We felt that the survey questions needed to be narrow and focused so that our recommendations could be clear and specific. We asked questions specific to the problems or areas that needed improvement (i.e. navigating through the shopping cart). The goal of the survey was to provide us with relevant information in order to provide sound recommendations for the website. Background 3 Methodology After studying the website www.getleidflowers.com, we decided we would need a method of testing that would give us a fair overview of the usability of the website and help us to pinpoint any problems with the visual effect, graphics, grammar etc. The method our usability team chose as a way to get an accurate assessment of the usability of the website was to conduct a user survey. The survey consisted of three parts. The first was to be answered before visiting the site; the second while searching the site and the third was to be answered afterwards. We did not assist or coach the participants during the exercise. However we recorded any comments they made while visiting the website. There were fourteen participants in our survey, both male and female, ranging from 18 years to 55 years of age, all from different backgrounds. This was important to ensure a more diversified and unbiased opinion. The pre-test questionnaire was used to collect personal information to insure we had achieved our goal of diversity among the participants. This section contained the following five questions: • What is your age group? • Male or Female? • Rate your experience with computer on a scale of 1-5. • Rate your experience on the internet on a scale of 1-5. • Have you used www.getleidflowers.com before? If so how many times? The second part of the questionnaire was the in-test method. We had participants perform six different tasks and record their findings. There was no time limit giving while performing this test. The tasks were as follows: • What is the NBC Special? • You want to contact the owner for a possible business venture. What is his name, e-mail, and phone number? • You want to buy a lei for your friend john’s graduation. Find a lei appropriate for him. • You want to buy the most expensive lei for a friend. Find this lei. • Add these two leis to your shopping cart. What is your subtotal for these two items? • How much is your order with shipping? The third and final part of the questionnaire was a post-test questionnaire and consisted of six sections. Under five of the sections were a list of questions in which the answers were based on a ranking system of Methodology 4 1-5 (one being no to five being yes). This was imperative to the test so we were able to quantify our results and display them graphically. The five sections are as follows: • Text • Background • Graphics • Navigation • Content Under each of the five sections there were three to four questions to be rank in regards to the individual section. A complete list of these questions as well as a copy of the questionnaire can be found in Appendix D. Under the final section of the post-test there was a questionnaire that consisted of four questions. These questions were left open-ended so that each participant could share their personal experiences on the website as well as any suggestions they had to improve the site. The four questions are as follows: • Did you find the site easy to use? • What recommendations would you make to make completing these tasks easier? • Did you have any problem completing the tasks? • Would you use this site in the future? The goal of our test was to evaluate the usability of the www.getleidflowers.com website, for its intended audience (the general public). We feel that we have attained our goal of an unbiased, diversified survey. Our recommendations offer possible solutions to help make the website more user friendly. Methodology 5 Findings This section is a result of the survey for the website, www.getleidflowers.com. It consists of the survey results such as pre-test and post-test. The result of Pre-test survey For our usability testing, we had a user test group made of 14 subjects, 5 males and 9 females. For the quality of the survey, we widely surveyed users ranging in age from 15 to 62 (See figure1-1). All the subjects had some experience with computers and internet. However, none of the participants had used the website before (See figure1-2). Figure 1-1. Ages ranged from 15 to 62. Figure1-2. All of participants had one or more computer and internet experience. Findings 6 The result of Post-test survey 78% of responders answered they found the site easy to use. Only two out of fourteen did not agree with this assessment. However, over 50% of participants did not want to use the site in the future and 21% of them answered they were not sure. It is necessary to find out the reason why they did not want to visit the website again and solve the problem. We divided five sections: text, background, graphics, navigation, and content. Text Three questions were posed to 14 participants. 56 % of respondents agreed that the fonts were appropriate and legible. (See figure 2-1) Also, 43 % of them chose average for the layout direct attention to the most important site content areas. In addition, over 50 % of them disagreed when we asked there were any grammatical errors. Overall, the respondents liked the fonts and mostly felt the layout was appropriate. Also, they felt it had few grammatical errors that affected their positive response. Figure 2-1 Over 56% of participants agreed the fonts were appropriate and legible. Text-Are the fonts appropriate and legible? 14% 42% 14% 1(no) 2 3 4 5(yes) 14% Findings 14% 7 Background There were also three questions in this section. Most participants feel the background is attractive. However, five out of fourteen feel it is distracting. 57% of our users agreed that the color scheme is attractive. 71% of users feel that the color scheme does not distract from the content. Overall, most responders agree the background and color scheme are attractive and do not distract from the content. However, 35% of them feel the background needs more work. (See figure 2-2). Figure 2-2 28% of testers strongly disagreed the background was attractive. % Is background attractive? 30 25 1 20 2 15 3 10 4 5 5 0 1 2 3 4 5 --->YES Graphics There were four questions in this section. 35% of responders do not believe that the graphics are relevant to the lei theme. 78% of them feel the graphics are attractive. Most of users chose an average for the question that the graphics had clear and useful labels. 42% of them feel the graphics are placed effectively for visual balance. However, 28% of them think the graphics need to be reworked to achieve visual balance. Navigation There were three questions in this section. 56% of participants feel the hyperlinks need to be clearly identified and appropriately named. Almost all of them agreed that essential content should be linked in the navigation bars. Only one had negative response for this question. We had a question to find contact information (name, e-mail, and phone number) during the in-test survey. All responders, without exception, answered this question. Finally, 57% of users agreed that the site organization is easy to recognize. Content There were three questions in this section. 50% of responders strongly agreed that the purpose of each page is apparent. 64% of users chose average for the question asking if the content of Findings 8 each page is up-to-date. In addition, nine out of fourteen felt each page provided enough content to achieve its purpose. Surprisingly, none of them disagreed the last question. Overall In text, navigation, and content section, it had high customer-satisfaction. However, many of them felt it needed more work in the background and graphics. The result of In-test survey Most of testers found right information we asked to find in the site. However, some information was not clear so some of testers complained about it. For example, it was asked them to find the most expensive lei and almost everyone except one found the money lei which was right answer. In addition, we asked them to find contact information and all of them found the correct information without having a problem. (See figure 3-1). Finally, we asked them to add two leis to their shopping cart and estimate the price. Almost all did it. However, some of them complained about the problems when it was in progress of ordering. If a user clicked on the picture in order to view larger picture, it took him right to the cart. Many of them were not sure it was for zip code when there was a blank for location. Figure 3-1 we put question 1 through 4 for knowing the customers to find correct information. As above, it shows high percent of correct answer of each question. Findings 9 Recommendations Home Page Get Lei’d Flowers Website Home page seems a bit cluttered with graphics, but there is little information about the company. We suggest that more background about the purpose of the site be added to the front page. We also believe that, while the graphic behind the introductory text is attractive, it distracts from the actual text. Figure 4.1 Graphic distracts from text. Another area that needs to be addressed on the home page is the HOME link. This link is redundant. This link needs to be removed from this page only. It is important that the remaining links point to something. In our testing, one user found that the PHOTOS link was broken. Another item to note is that the “Lei’s” link is spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling would be without an apostrophe—Leis. Background On screens with higher resolutions, the background repeats on the right side of the screen. Some users found this distracting. We recommend centering the background. This will allow users with higher screen resolution settings to experience the website in the same way as those with lower screen resolution settings. Figure 5.1—Repeating Background Recommendations 10 Leis Page We recommend that this page not duplicate the first page almost exactly with the background. Instead, we feel that the site should retain the title as a header that continues to be duplicated throughout the site. Figure 6.1 After clicking to the Leis page, the first thing that grabs the user’s attention is the bolded red WARNING! We recommend that rather than drawing attention to a potential drawback of the company that this be placed as a disclaimer on the bottom of each lei page. Figure 6.2 Don’t bring attention to negative aspects. Spelling Error Another important point to keep in mind is that this page also has a spelling error. (Figure 6.2). It is important to make sure that each page is error free. This lends credibility and ethos to the company. We feel that the site would be more attractive and easier to use if each link had a graphic of a sample lei that might be found in that section, as well as text describing the leis that will be found in the section— including perhaps what the leis might be used for. We have created an example of this in Figure 6.3 Recommendations 11 Figure 6.3—Sample of links with descriptions Lei Categories In each category respondents suggested that they would like to see a larger, more detailed picture when they clicked on the picture of a lei. It was also suggested that the shopping cart be more fully integrated with the site, allowing shoppers to specify how many of each lei they are buying while they can actually see the lei. We also recommend that the descriptions of the leis be more fully developed rather than just a title. This is the perfect place to not only describe the physical features of the leis (including size), but also to inform the site user of the traditional uses of the particular lei as well as some historical background. We feel that the site should aim to make sure the least educated user in Hawaiian tradition would have some understanding when purchasing leis. Ordering Some of the testers complained about problems when ordering the leis. When a user clicks on the picture of a lei, they expect to go to a larger picture. When testers clicked the picture, it took them right to the shopping cart, leaving users frustrated that they couldn’t see the leis in more detail. We recommend that clicking the pictures take users to a separate page. This separate page should include a larger picture of the lei, as well as a shopping cart option that allows users to specify how many of the particular lei they are ordering. A separate shopping cart link would take users to a shopping cart page that shows a chart of each lei ordered, with the option to add leis, delete leis, or change the number of leis ordered. Shipping This is a category that needs to be addressed on this site in someplace other than just the shopping cart. If shipping charges change based on the amount of leis one orders, then that needs to be addressed, perhaps on its own page. Shoppers like to know how much items are going to cost before they start shopping seriously, and that cost includes shipping. Recommendations 12 Frequently Asked Questions This is a page that might take the shipping questions above into consideration. Other subjects this page might cover include how the leis are packed and shipped, estimated shipping time, a reiteration of the warning mentioned in Figure 1.3, care instructions, and special requests. Recommendations 13 Conclusions Our initial goal was to identify potential problems with the website and recommend changes to make the site user-friendly and easy to use. This report has discussed the problems focused on customer’s convenience and satisfaction. We suggested six recommendations to improve the website: • Homepage: Make the background on front page and remove home link • Background: Replace the warning signal and relocate the background • Leis Page: Add Larger, more detailed picture • Lei Categories: Clicking the pictures take users to a separate page • Ordering: Create separate, convenient shopping cart • Frequently Asked Questions: Create the page with question and answer customer generally asks • Shipping: Make separate own page This is a website in which actual customers buy items without seeing the actual items, unlike a store. The website should be clear and attractive, as well as user friendly. By implementing our recommendations, the quality of the website will improve. Improving the website will result in an increase in customer satisfaction and profit. We are positive that through the recommendations presented you will be pleased with the results. Thank you for taking the time to review our recommendations. We hope you find them to be of great use for improving the website.
