From the principal
He mihi maioha, Faa-talofa atu, Greetings
We warmly welcome all our new students, their
families and our new staff to the Marian College
community. The Year 9 students have begun the
peer support programme with their Year 12 leaders,
and they have already had a lot of fun. The Year 13
student leaders have plenty of ideas for a positive
and exciting year for the whole school. The staff has
been busy preparing for a new year and we
celebrated a lovely Mass on staff only day with
Father Dan Doyle.
the girls and also to the staff, as they have worked
together to achieve impressive pass rates. Many
students have also been busy over the holiday break
and some great successes and events are reported
later in this newsletter and also on the school and
sports websites.
This year we will be issuing the newsletter every
fortnight to keep you up to date with coming events.
You are most welcome to attend all of these which is
the Mihi Whakatau welcome, followed by the
opening school Mass at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral and
the Year 9 Parents Evening.
This year brings a range of special events at Marian,
including the 150 year anniversary of the Sisters of St
Joseph, the Caritas national launch and World Youth
Day. Pope Francis has called for 2016 to be a Year of
Mercy and this will be a particular focus for us.
We are all looking forward to 2016 with great faith in
our future,
We are very proud of our senior students NCEA
results, which are extremely pleasing. Well done to

Special Character news
Year 13 Leadership Day
2016 is going to be a fulfilling year for Special
Catholic Character at Marian College. A special
welcome to our new students and it is always a joy
to see returning students. The welcome Mass will
be celebrated at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral on 9
February at 9.30am. The liturgical year is under way
early with Ash Wednesday is on 10 February, our
senior students facilitate the distribution of ashes
during home group time. Special events this year
are the launch of the Caritas Challenge for the
diocese and the companion World Youth Day
hosted by Marian and Cathedral College, July 29 – 1
August. Special Catholic Character Leaders this year
are Grace Challies and Laura Duxbury. Petra
McGurk is Vinnies president.
On Wednesday 27 January Villa Maria College and
Marian College gathered their year 13 leadership
groups together to explore how to lead with
confidence, grace and mercy, in this extraordinary
year of Special Catholic Character events. Naturally
discussion on the leadership style of Catherine
McAuley was at the heart of the day, and our
students found ways to apply this style to leadership
in the 21st century. Marian College girls also shared
some of the themes of St Mary of the Cross
MacKillop with their peers from Villa Maria. Please
check our Facebook page for footage of the day.

Lent
Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow
in our relationship with God and to deepen our
commitment to a way of life, rooted in our
baptism. In our busy world, Lent provides us with
an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns, to pray
more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've
done and failed to do, and to be generous to those
in need.
Catherine McAuley
You must be cheerful and
happy, animating all around
you.

Interim 2015 NCEA results
During the last week we have taken the opportunity
to look closely at our overall provisional NCEA
examination results. It is really pleasing to see that
our students have consistently performed above the
level of schools of similar decile and the national
level. We acknowledge the work of teachers and
staff, students’ efforts and the support of families.

Junior Collaborative Learning
Collaborative Learning cont.
In the last few weeks of school for 2015 all junior
students participated in a range of collaborative
learning projects, across many subject areas, in the
aim of learning more about our community.
ACADEMIC
This culminated in a day of fun activities and was a
place to share learning experiences. There were
interactive presentations shown from the English
and Science departments on disease and
endangered species, a refugee guest speaker, fun
house activities led by Commerce and Languages,
Maori Tapuwae games on the field led by Physical
Education and Languages, and a shared lunch
organised by Religious Education.
The Mathematics and Social Science departments
were another of the groups that collaborated.
When students were learning about refugees, and in
particular the Syrian refugee crisis, this was then
linked back to refugees in New Zealand and what
we as the Marian community could do to contribute
to their wellbeing.
The students made care
packages that could be sent to Nelson, currently one
of the closest refugee centres to Christchurch, for
refugee children living and resettling in New
Zealand. They made and decorated boxes in a
kiwiana theme and contributed items to the boxes.
These were sent to Nelson in time for Christmas.
All of the students contributions and enthusiastic
participation were much appreciated in this
collaborative journey.
STAR @ University of Canterbury
At the University of Canterbury, secondary school
students from anywhere in New Zealand can
become STAR students and enrol in first-year
degree-level courses while they are in Year 12 or 13.
Congratulations to Frances Daly (Yr 13, 2015) who
studied Music in Semester 1 and 2 and achieved an
A pass in both papers.

Drama
Uniform
Phebe Mander, one of last year’s Year 13 drama
students who is an accomplished dancer has joined
Hagley Dance Company for this year to prepare for
further dance training at Unitec Performing Arts
School in Auckland. We wish her all the best and
will be following her shows this year at Hagley’s
Open Stage.
A quick reminder to all students and parents
regarding wearing our Marian uniform with pride.
Please ensure you are aware of the following:

Make-up may not be worn.

The blazer must
be worn on
official occasions
eg.
Mass,
assemblies and
to and from
school.
The
summer
dress
may be worn on
the
street
without
the
blazer in hot
weather (but not just with a cardigan/jersey)

Correct sports uniform (tracksuit bottoms and
jacket) may be worn on a Wednesday if a
student is going to play sport immediately
after school, and only navy red or white tops
with the Marian College logo are permitted to
be worn underneath jackets. Jandals or
slippers are not permitted.

Dress length must be appropriate.

White ankle socks must be worn with shoes.

All articles of uniform should be clearly
named.

Hair and Jewellery: Hair must be worn above
the collar level, or neatly tied back with red or
blue ribbons or hair ties. Girls with pierced
ears may wear one small plain gold or silver
stud/sleeper in the lobe of each ear. No
other piercings are permitted. No other
jewellery, bangles, crosses, chains (apart from
medical alert etc.) can be worn.

Any form of taonga may be worn with the
uniform but should not be visible.
Meanwhile, DRAMA is all set for another exciting
year at Marian College! Fabulous class courses are
on offer that develop confidence and creativity and
there are extra-curricular opportunities open to
anyone. These vary in skill and experience
requirements but there is something for everyone.
DRAMA & USEFUL INFORMATION
The first interschool celebration of performance is
the University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shaespeare
Festival. Year 13 Drama Students Jenny Stewart and
Charlotte Taurima (who are also the head and
deputy-head of culture in the school) are keen to
direct a 5-minute Shakespeare piece for this festival
that takes place 29-31 March with a showcase at
the Court Theatre on 3 April. Great to see students
growing in confidence, leadership and skill.
Watch out for notices about Stage Challenge too.
Stage Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for girls
who will commit to a demanding rehearsal schedule
to create a stunning piece of dance/drama. An
excellent way to meet new people as you all work
together to make a dance work that shows your skill
and tells a story. Stage Challenge happens 1718 May and planning is already underway.
Theatresports:
A
brilliant way to let down
your hair and relax at
lunchtime,
and
an
opportunity to train and
join an interschool
competing
team.
Largely student-led and
coached, Theatresports
is fun for the quick-witted and anyone who wants to
give it a go. No experience is required.
GO DRAMA!
Ms Helen Moran
Teacher in charge of Drama
Students who, for unforeseen circumstances, are
unable to be in correct uniform must obtain a
uniform pass from the Deputy principal before
school.
Buses
Please ensure you check the Marian College website
and our Facebook page regarding the Marian
College bus route and changes made for this year. A
user pays bus for Marian students only with an
extended route is now available.

Room.
All students, staff and family members can access
physiotherapy directly by making an appointment in
the main office or by phoning Balance
Physiotherapy on 021742723.
Physiotherapy

the sport or activities you are involved with.
Sharada from Balance Physiotherapy is experienced
in sports physiotherapy and injury management.
They can also consult with coaches and PE staff to
help you get the correct level of activity as you
recover. There is no need to be referred by a doctor
but if the physiotherapist feels a GP or specialist
needs to be consulted or xrays taken, she can
organise this at assessment. Get treated early for a
good recovery!
ACC subsidise accident related physiotherapy
treatment and we can initiate your ACC claim for
you. The co-payments are $20.00 per treatment.
