Check It Out! ■ West Deptford Free Public Library E-Newsletter A place for all reasons! January 2013 Volume 11, Number 1 www.westdeptford.lib.nj.us ❄ ❄ ❄ Coming in February... PAWS for Reading! Sponsored by PAWS for People (Pet-Assisted Visitation Volunteer Services. Inc.), PAWS for Reading is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children improve their reading and communication skills. Each child receives anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes with a certified dog team to read aloud, talk to, or do puzzles with the pet. The pet’s handler helps to facilitate the session – taking pressure off the child and providing support, while sometimes acting as the ‘interpreter’ for the dog who is listening. “Frisky didn’t quite understand what that word meant ... can you help him understand?” Or even, “Frisky really loves the way you read to him!” At the end of the session, the child will be given an incentive such as a bookmark, a pet business card, or a chance to sign the pet’s ‘paw-tograph’ book. The PAWS for Reading program will take place in the Children’s Services area of the Library, 6:30 p.m., on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month beginning February 13. The Dogs, Kids & Reading Kick-Off will be Wednesday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. Visit the Children’s page on the Library’s website www.westdeptford.lib.nj.us to learn about specific dates and the registration process. Our fall activities were once again appreciated by residents and we are now looking to expand these activities to include more businesses and families. The New Year will bring new displays that bring out the history of the township. Our first display of 2013 will be artifacts found on the Eagle Point Property from when excavation was done to build the refinery. This display will be in our showcase from January to March. The next display will feature items that focus on the twentyfifth anniversary of the West Deptford Free Public Library in its current location. The Historical Association continues to add to our collections monthly. It is always fascinating to see the history come together as township families share their roots of when they first came to West Deptford. The goal of the Historical Association is to bring the past to the present and offer activities which bring our residents together to enjoy what West Deptford has to offer. We look forward to seeing you at our events or at our meetings. Meetings are held at the Library every other month on the second Monday. For more information, please contact April Maska at 845-1205, Noreen Mikulski at 848-0396 or call the Information Desk at the Library at 845-5593. ❄ Your past is part of our history that is waiting to be retold and treasured. Historical Association Although West Deptford was spared the worst of Sandy’s bad behavior, we are more than happy to settle down to long nights of quiet when we can enjoy serenity and reading about adventure rather than living it. Now is the time to cozy up to a warm fire or under a warm blanket sipping a favorite hot beverage, perhaps with a spoonful of local honey to sweeten the taste and ward off the effects of flu or other coldweather illnesses. The perfect accompaniment to this combination is a book to hold our attention while we drift into whatever world attracts us. Perhaps we prefer to watch a film or listen to a Playaway. The West Deptford Free Public Library can fulfill any of these desires. If you like to highlight your books, the friends of the WDPL will gladly sell you some used books that you can take home for a modest price and feel free to mark up as you choose.
