No More Taxes!
People formed secret groups.
They were going to fight against
the British taxes. One group was
called the Sons of Liberty.
The Sons of Liberty met
to talk about unfair taxes.
The British did not like these
groups. The groups
had too much power.
So in 1766 the
British ended one
tax, but then made
several new taxes.
People spoke out
against British taxes.
Samuel Adams
Samuel Adams was one of the
Sons of Liberty. He told colonists
not to pay taxes. Many colonists
stopped buying taxed items, such
as glass.

BraveMen
In 1773 the British government
passed a tax on tea. When three ships
with tea came to Boston, the patriots
would not let the tea be unloaded.
Two weeks later a group of about
50 patriots dressed up like Native
Americans. They went to the dock.
Men dressed like Native Americans
got onto the British tea ships.
At the dock they found the
ships that carried British tea. The
colonists wanted to show that they
would not pay taxes on the tea.
The Boston Tea Party
The patriots climbed on board a
ship and found the tea. They broke
open the boxes of tea. Then they
threw the boxes into the water.
No one tried to stop the patriots.
About 342 boxes of tea were thrown
into the water. Tea floated all around.
It was the Boston Tea Party!

The Fight to Be Free
Colony leaders decided to fight back.
They formed an army and navy. They
chose George Washington to lead the
new army. A war began in 177 5.
I George Washington led
an army for the colonies.
The war was long. In 1783 the
colonists won their liberty. Ten years
after the Boston Tea Party, America
became a free country.
We are free today because
the colonists won the war.
