making a
difference

Prof Michael Thorne
Vice Chancellor
Anglia Ruskin University is a hugely ambitious
academic community. We simply have more ideas
for developing our offer to students at home and
abroad and for the research we want to carry out
than we can afford from the income we earn –
even though that has grown to an all-time record
level. Universities across the world who share that
ambition traditionally appeal to former students,
research funders and charitable trusts for support
to accelerate their progress, be that in their ability
to offer students scholarships, undertake groundbreaking medical research projects or simply
hasten the rise up the reputational spectrum.
As a donor myself, I am delighted to be supporting
Anglia Ruskin in its advancement of knowledge
and contribution to society. This document sets
out our already remarkable progress in attracting
support for projects and invites you to help us in
any way you can, according to your means. I do
hope you will join those of us who have already
helped make our ambition a reality, much as we
hope our degree programmes help our students
fulfil their ambitions.
“To see such generous funding
spent on bettering the lives of
students is amazing.”

Welcome to Anglia Ruskin University’s
donor report for 2013/14. The following
pages show our philanthropic income over
the year, how this has been used and lists
the various donors who have kindly given
their support to make a real difference.
Thank you for all the support you have
shown for the improvement of student
experience in Anglia Ruskin. To see such
generous funding spent on bettering
the lives of students through individual
bursaries and scholarships to wider
education and awareness support is
amazing.
I hope that you enjoy reading about the
many ways in which your contribution
has helped to change lives and shape our
future. Whether you have given this year
for the first time, or have been supporting
us for several years – thank you.

Relations
For us, your contribution to getting
student-led projects and RAG (Raising &
Giving) started is crucial, and certainly
hasn’t gone unnoticed. Thanks to the fund,
we are in a better place to ensure that
volunteering and fundraising in university
and in the wider community is an even
bigger priority, which we think is really
important. Thank you.

With a little help
from our friends….
We would like to thank our supporters
for helping us to raise funds
during 2013/14 for a wide range of
initiatives, from scholarships and
prizes rewarding excellence, to
projects which enhance the student
experience and research.
Our friends and supporters
By giving, you have helped us to
make an impact on the lives of our
current and future students and the
wider community. Our philanthropic
income comes from a wide range
of supporters and friends of Anglia
Ruskin.
Our Annual Fund, which includes an
annual telephone campaign, gives
our student callers the opportunity to
have conversations with our alumni
– a great link between the past and
the present.
We also receive support from other
individuals, corporates and trusts,
and also raise funds through events.

Scholarships
and Opportunity
Scholarships and bursaries can
provide life-changing opportunities
to our students, which is why this is
a key area of our fundraising focus.
Scholarship or bursary support
makes a huge difference – by having
to worry less about money students
can focus on their studies and
on immersing themselves in the
university experience, allowing them
to expand their horizons and reach
their full potential.
Alumni Support Fund
Scholarships
2013/14 welcomed the second set
of incoming students benefitting
from the generosity of our alumni.
Each year, 10 students receive £500
towards their studies, enabling them
to begin their journey with a reduced
financial burden.
This year’s recipients were Sally
Burch, Genevie Celestine, Amy
Crawford, Darren Gilligan, Claire
Gray, Megan Jefferson, Rebecca
Johnson, Rollande Mbelek, Paul
McDonagh and Maxine Morley. They
are studying courses as diverse as
Social Work, International Hospitality
& Tourism, Sports Coaching and
Marine Biology & Diversity and
Conservation.
Auden Mckenzie
Scholarships
Alumnus Hasmukh Patel has kindly
supported scholarships for the last
2 years through the pharmaceutical
company he founded, Auden
Mckenzie. He is passionate about
supporting promising students who
are facing serious pressures that may
threaten their ability to continue with
their studies. His support of £5,000
has helped three students this year:
•
Sophie Goldsmith, in the final
year of her BA (Hons) Drama
and Film Studies degree, she
plans to become a Drama
Therapist, working with children
and adolescents suffering
from trauma and neurological
abnormalities.
•
Nicola Murray, a mature student
working towards a BSc (Hons)
Midwifery degree.
•
Amber Cudmore studying for a
BA in Early Childhood Studies,
Amber plans to become a
qualified primary school teacher.
Provide
Provide is a not-for-profit social
enterprise delivering health care
services across the East of England.
Their relationship with us has gone
from strength to strength, with many
of their nurses and support staff
being Anglia Ruskin graduates.
Provide have supported our students
with bursaries, prizes, placements
and job opportunities. In particular,
our Charity and Social Enterprise
Management course benefits from
several fee assistance bursaries
for incoming students. They also
provide paid, year-long work
placement and graduating job
opportunities with real development
potential.
One recent recipient of this
opportunity is Taylor Hughes,
currently studying for a Business
Management BA (to graduate in
2016). He has been able to gain
valuable part-time work experience
within the business centre of Provide,
fully paid for a whole year.
We are very grateful to Provide for
their ongoing support and we look
forward to continuing to work with
them in the future.
Scholarships
and Opportunity
John Owens
John Owens Scholarships
For 2013/14 alumnus John Owens
(BA Hons Geography, 1977) has
provided three undergraduate
scholarships, two for law and one
for art.
“I’m delighted to be an alumni donor
at Anglia Ruskin University.
I had three wonderful years at what
was then CCAT back in the 1970s
and it’s a great pleasure to be able
to give a little back to the University
in the form of scholarships. I’m
greatly impressed by all this year’s
Scholars and look forward to
following their progress and the
progress of future John Owens
Scholars in the years to come.”

this year and has enabled me
to access information from the
internet more freely. This has
shown a huge benefit in being able
to research subjects in more depth.
I am sincerely very grateful.”
“This scholarship allowed me to
buy extra reading material for my
course, aiding my ability to achieve
high grades. It has also given me
the self-confidence to believe in
myself and see that I am able to
meet high expectations.”
Art scholarship – £500 annually for
final 2 years
Awarded to returning (second year
undergraduate) art student Samuel
Holmar who scored the highest
marks in his first year of study.
Law scholarship 2 – £500 annually
for final 2 years
Awarded to returning (second-year
undergraduate) law student Antony
Carter who scored the highest marks
in his first year of study.
“This year’s scholarship has made a
tremendous difference to me, and
my ability to achieve my goals.
I was struggling with a computer
that was outmoded, very slow, and
lacked the ability to connect with
the internet at the University. The
funds from the scholarship enabled
me to purchase a MacBook Air,
which has been superb throughout
“As my main focus is
cinematography I have been
building up my own equipment
over the last two years. Earlier in
the year I purchased a lens for my
camera which was instrumental in
capturing much of the footage for
my documentary which was filmed
completely at night. Without this
equipment much of the footage
would not have been captured
and the quality of the film would
have been greatly reduced. This
scholarship has helped to alleviate
the financial pressure which
purchasing this equipment has
put on me.”

First Aid training for Public Service students
Enhancing the
student experience
Through our Telethon and other
Annual Fund initiatives across the
year, money donated by our alumni
for unrestricted purposes goes into
a General Fund to support studentfocussed projects and areas such as
equipment, exhibitions and student
activities. Seven projects have been
made possible using unrestricted

students
The standard First Aid training
course was provided for 20 first year
Foundation Public Service students,
run by St John Ambulance, leading to
a Certificate on successful completion.
The students will be able to apply the
skills learned in their work placements
with disadvantaged groups and
with the emergency public services,
enhancing their CVs and considerably
improving their employability.
Adult Nursing visit to
Florence Nightingale
Museum
Designed to enhance learning
and appreciation of professional
healthcare standards within the field
of adult nursing, a visit for 18 students
has been arranged to the Florence
Nightingale Museum at St Thomas
Hospital in London along with the
Old Operating Theatre at Guys
Hospital.
Support for our Library
This has allowed us to add to the
new Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA)
project, with many new e-books
added to our library catalogue.
Individuals can access just a
particular part of a book, for instance
a chapter for research, at a fraction
of the usual cost. The more popular
titles (based on patron usage) are
then purchased permanently. To find
out more about this project, please

Awareness of HIV in the UK
and Africa
Our Biomedical Science and Film
students will write and produce
approximately 6 short films during
2014, increasing awareness of HIV in
both the UK and Africa.
Criminology field trip to
Auschwitz for 30 students
This event enhances students’
understanding of crime and its
impact through exploration of the
museum. The visit supports learning
(students study violence, victims, war
and genocide), as well as contributing
to their understanding of devastating
events, which may in turn inform
their undergraduate dissertations.

Student Led Projects
including RAG
(Raising and Giving)
A new, enhanced display area in
Cambridge will allow all sports clubs
to promote themselves better. It is
based next to the scholars and sports
results boards in a bustling area of
campus, making this the place to go
for all students looking to find out
more about sports.
RAG societies are student-run
charitable fundraising groups,
present at many universities across
the UK. They typically feature a series
of fundraising initiatives that usually
take place during a designated
RAG week. This increases student
engagement in an environment
where they can create ownership
of projects which have a positive
impact on the community – not only
locally, but with the potential to have
a positive impact nationally, and even
internationally. Seed funding has
been made available to introduce a
RAG Society next academic year, so
the Students’ Union can establish
a framework for this student led
activity, which includes around 120
clubs and societies.
Arts & Culture
Mission Croatia
Funding has provided new
picture frames, initially for use in
a photography exhibition in the
Mumford Theatre foyer on our
Cambridge Campus.
Thank you to everyone who has
made Mission Croatia and other
International Community Experience
(ICE) projects possible through your
support.
The visit to Duxford involved an
interactive learning session on
‘Trench Warfare’. Students accessed a
wealth of artefacts and photographs
through which they explored the
daily routine of a soldier in the
trenches on the Western front during
World War I.
Sports
For the past 18 consecutive years
Mission Croatia has developed and
sustained relationships with four
institutions for people with learning
disabilities. Over 400 students and
staff have taken part over the years
and had their lives changed because
of their experiences. This simple
idea of doing good for those who
have less than us has proved to be
a valued way of mutual learning and
growing international friendships
that has made our students and staff
proud to be part of Anglia Ruskin
University.
Simon Jones (1st Year BA Education
and Childhood Studies) reflected:
“Mission Croatia will be something
we will treasure forever. The people
I met and the experiences I had are
endless. So much can be learned
through story telling. This will be
an experience I will share with my
students when, in the near future
I become a teacher. Thank you
Anglia Ruskin, my team and Croatia
for having us!”

Supporting research
that has an impact
Screen grab of the software for the analysis of burns data
Burn injuries
Breast Cancer
Your contributions have been used to
purchase software for the analysis of the
burns data collected in the gait and motion
analysis laboratory in our Postgraduate
Medical Institute. The software (see image
above) enables us to build the skeletal
image of the burns patient throughout the
testing process so that through threedimensional assessment of their injury and
movement limitations can be carried out.
New MCF7 breast cancer cells purchased
from the American cell bank have been
fundamental in research into breast cancer
as they are used as one model for the
disease. It is a great help to our research.
Resource constraints: sharing a
finite world
A major project is being undertaken to
create a map of the planet’s resource limits,
which will underpin the creation of a suite
of research projects aimed at measuring
the impacts of these ‘limits to growth’.
“I wanted to help make sure that students
who may be struggling with money worries
can receive the financial help they need to
continue with their studies…”
Leave the gift
of a lifetime
Leaving a legacy gift in your Will could be
the single most important philanthropic
gift you ever provide and can even
significantly reduce your inheritance tax
liability.
A legacy gift can make a great difference
long into the future, supporting students
in their efforts to complete their studies
successfully, whatever their needs may
be, or helping to sustain and develop
our ground-breaking specialist research,
addressing the needs and issues affecting
today’s society.
If you’re passionate about Higher
Education and the important work taking
place at Anglia Ruskin, please consider
how your legacy could brighten the lives
of future students for years to come –
it truly is the gift of a lifetime.
Alumna Mary Windus (BA History,
2000), who has pledged a gift in her Will,
describes what motivated her to give in
this particular way.
“I wanted to help make sure that students
who may be struggling with money
worries can receive the financial help
they need to continue with their studies,
through essential scholarship funds. I
also have a particular personal interest
in cancer research and music therapy.
Anglia Ruskin’s work in both these areas
is world-class, and I know that making a
legacy gift is one of the most effective
ways that I can support all these areas
of the University’s work.”
We are very grateful to Mary and others
who have already pledged gifts to Anglia
Ruskin in their Will. Please do consider if
you could do the same.

How you can
support us
Many of our supporters make
contributions to our Annual Fund which
disburses grants to a variety of projects.
However some of our donors are
interested in giving to specific causes such
as student support, research or music
therapy. Whatever your area of interest,
every one of our supporters has the power
to play a role in Anglia Ruskin’s future.
Here are some of the ways to support and
stay connected with Anglia Ruskin.
Help financially
Scholarships and bursaries – Help
students by offering hardship bursaries
or scholarships for undergraduate or
postgraduate students to encourage
student talent and offer life changing
educational opportunities.
Donate to the Annual Fund – Money
given to our Annual Fund ensures we can
offer extra opportunities to students giving
them an exceptional experience, over and
above what is expected.
Donate to other projects – From
supporting cutting-edge research that
addresses today’s problems and needs
to funding books for the library, your
donations can make a huge difference on
campus.
Give as you Live© – Register for our
Give as you Live shopping app and raise
money for music therapy every time you
shop online. Thousands of stores have
signed up to donate a percentage of your
shopping bill – at no extra cost to you. To
sign up go to our Ways to Give page on
the website.
Leave a legacy – Remembering Anglia
Ruskin in your Will is the perfect way
to ensure that you make a real and
lasting difference to future generations
of students, but without affecting your
income during your lifetime. We can help
to make sure that your legacy achieves
exactly what you want it to.
Offer your services
Work placements – Could you offer
a work placement to build the skills
of our students and enhance their
employability? We are always keen to hear
from employers who are able to host a
placement.
Recruitment – Advertise vacancies via our
Careers Service and be the first to reach
our sought-after graduates.
Volunteering – There are opportunities
for alumni to give back to Anglia Ruskin by
donating their time, through mentoring,
coaching, and giving talks and lectures.
