Dear Alumni and Friends of Kansas Wesleyan University:
I am pleased to provide you with a copy of the Annual Report for Kansas Wesleyan
University for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
As you will see throughout this document, we have had another successful year. We have
completed construction of our first new building on campus since 1981, our new Student
Activities Center. We have completed a major landscaping of the campus and are looking
at other projects to continue to enhance the facilities, programs, and services at Kansas
Wesleyan University. We endeavor to remain good stewards of the resources that you and
others have entrusted with us.
On behalf of this fine University, thank you for your continued support of Kansas Wesleyan
University. It is through the grace, generosity, and support from so many that we are able to
fulfill our mission and serve the needs of our community. May God continue to bless you and

ACCREDITATIONS
Three major accrediting
bodies gave Kansas Wesleyan
University their approval during
Fiscal Year 2008.
In October 2007, Kansas
Wesleyan received official
notification from the Higher
Learning Commission of the
North Central Association of
Schools and Colleges that the
regional accreditation for the
University, including all of its
undergraduate and graduate
academic programs, has been
continued for the next 10
years. Additionally, the Higher
Learning Commission (HLC)
placed no stipulations for either
follow-up reports or return visits
during the 10-year continuation.
In late spring of 2008,
the University was notified
that it had met the criteria
of the National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE) for its initial
teacher preparation program.
The next NCATE visit is
scheduled for 2014.
Also late in the spring of
2008, the University Senate of
the United Methodist Church
sent word that it had approved,
without qualification, Kansas
Wesleyan’s continued affiliation
status with the United Methodist
Church. The affiliation is for 10
years, which is the maximum
period possible.
STUDENTS
While the decline in
headcount slightly impacted
the number of students living in
the University’s residence halls,
the campus residential facilities
remained a lively, vibrant part of
University life. Pfeiffer continued
as the women’s residence hall.
Wesley Hall provided housing
for men. Again this year, Wilson
Hall’s coed living environment
proved to be a positive aspect of
residential life.
ENROLLEMENT
ACTIVITIES AND
INTRAMURALS PROGRAM
The Fall 2007 headcount
enrollment was 864, a decline
of 30 students, yet headcount
remained above 850 for only the
third time in University history
and above 800 for the sixth
consecutive year. Contributing
to the University’s headcount
was a more than 6.3 percent
increase in the retention of
students from the previous year.

Total participation in activities
and intramurals rose 8.98
percent in Fiscal Year 2008
for a total of 6,923. In all 432
persons, including 34 staff/
faculty members, participated
in one or more events. Of those
participating, 245 were new
participants and 48 were firsttime freshmen. The number
of teams participating rose by
11.58 percent to 95.
In October of 2007,
approximately 130 Kansas
Wesleyan students joined
forces with approximately
70 Kansas State UniversitySalina (KSU-Salina) students
to help the Salina community.
The collaboration came about
after KSU-Salina students who
were interested in starting a
community service project
similar to Kansas Wesleyan’s

spring event: Project HERO
(Helping Everyone Reach
Out), contacted members of
Kansas Wesleyan’s Student
Government Association. The
fall collaboration is known
as Project HUNT (Helping
University Neighborhoods
Together).
Two groups of Kansas
Wesleyan University students
joined together with others
in the community to benefit
children at Ashby House, a local
family shelter. The groups came
together to decorate, furnish,
and stock a children’s room at
the Ashby House facility at 153
S. Eighth. Kansas Wesleyan’s
Teacher Education students
collected hundreds of children’s
books and toys for the Ashby
House room. Additionally, the
group secured a grant from
the Kansas National Education
Association to purchase
furniture for the room. The Art
Club at Kansas Wesleyan lent its
talents to the project by painting
a mural in the children’s room.
The two groups of Kansas
Wesleyan students were
joined by a group of St. John’s
Military School students, who
built a bookshelf for the room.
Additionally, through the Greater
Salina Community Foundation,
the Blueprint for Leadership
group secured funds to put
carpet in the room.
A group of international
students at Kansas Wesleyan
shared the cuisine of
their countries during the
International Food Festival in
April of 2008. The festival was
held in conjunction with the
Sunday evening Buck Meal at
University United Methodist
Church. Approximately 15
different dishes representing
the cuisine of eight countries
were served and recipes were
provided.
Kansas Wesleyan seniors
challenged members of the
faculty to a series of games
designed to provide fun and
build community. The resulting
Faculty-Senior Challenge in
April proved quite popular with
both groups. Members of the
University’s Administrative Staff
served as judges and referees.
The third annual Project HERO
(Helping Everyone Reach Out)
community service day drew
more than 100 Kansas Wesleyan
students and a number of
faculty and staff to 14 work
sites throughout Saline County.
The event concluded with a
barbeque lunch at Kirwin House,
the home of President and Mrs.
Philip P. Kerstetter.
CAREER SERVICES
Fiscal Year 2008 saw
continued growth in the Career
Services Office as more and
more students found success
as they developed resume,
cover letter, and interview skills
and then put them to work for
their futures. Many students
also participated in workshops
such as: Mock Interviews and
Graduate School Application
Strategy, as well as classroom
presentations on resume/cover
letter writing, interviewing, and
establishing teaching credential
files. Additionally, students took
advantage of events offered
by Career Services such as:
Hire-A-Coyote, I-135/70 Career
Opportunity Expo, Nursing
Career Fair, Teacher Interview
Day, and Graduate School
Information Fair where they
connected with employers and
graduate school representatives.
The most exciting project
of Fiscal Year 2008 was the
preparation and installation
during the summer months
of a new online resource tool
– known as Coyote Career
Connections – for students,
alumni, and employers to aid
in career development, job
searches, and professional
networking.
ACADEMIC
Both students and faculty kept
busy with a variety of activities
during Fiscal Year 2008.
During the University’s
Opening Convocation in
August of 2007, Dr. Steve

2007 recipient of
the University’s
Exemplary Teacher
Award. Sponsored
jointly by the United
Methodist Board of
Higher Education
and Ministry and
Hoekstra
the Pepsi-Cola
Bottling Company,
the Exemplary Teacher Award is
presented to a Kansas Wesleyan
University faculty member who
shows excellence in teaching;
is active in his/her profession
and professional societies;
provides exemplary service
to the university and broader
community; demonstrates
cooperative and supportive
attitudes towards colleagues,
students and others; and is
committed to values-centered
education.
Kansas Wesleyan Art students
and artists throughout the area
were able to enhance their
world view of art, thanks to
Jerry Buhari, a visiting professor
from Ahmadu Bello University
in Zaria, Nigeria. While at the
University in the fall of 2007,
Buhari assisted with art classes
and presented a number of
lectures throughout the area.
His time at Kansas Wesleyan
concluded with an exhibition of
paintings he completed while in
the United States.
Debaters from
Kansas Wesleyan
squared off against
members of the
British Debate Team
during a special
exhibition in October
of 2007. The topic of
the lively debate was
“This House believes
that celebrities
deserve private lives.”
The appearance at Kansas
Wesleyan by the British Debate
Team representatives was one
of three stops the duo made in
Kansas.
Kansas Wesleyan students
interested in Forensic Science
got a glimpse of what
work in that field was
like during “KBI
Forensic Laboratory:
The Real CSI.” The
seminar, which was
open to the public,
was presented in
November by Michelle
McGinness, a forensic
scientist with the Kansas Bureau
of Investigation.
For the second consecutive
year, members of the Kansas
Wesleyan University Physics
Club saw their efforts soar sky
high with the successful launch
of a high-altitude balloon on
November of 2007. At its highest
point, the balloon reached
96,000 feet. The project was
able to gather data on location,
altitude, and temperature both
inside and outside the payload.
Through tracking equipment, the
group was able to recover the
downed balloon and equipment
in a field northwest of Emporia
several hours after the launch.
Members of the Kansas
Wesleyan University
Philharmonic Choir were heard
throughout a good portion of
Kansas as Radio Kansas, the
public radio network for central
and western Kansas, broadcast
live the evening Christmas by
Candlelight service in December.
From January 10-March 16,
2008, The Gallery in Sams Hall
of Fine Arts was the site
for part of a exhibition
of art from India.
“New Narratives:
Contemporary Art
from India” was a
collaborative effort of
Kansas Wesleyan and
the Salina Art Center.
A variety of activities
were held in conjunction
with the exhibit, which included
paintings, photographs,
sculptures, installations, and
works in video and new media.
Sixty works by 21 artists were
featured in the exhibition.
Kansas Wesleyan Teacher
Education students heard firsthand accounts of the teaching
profession from some of the
state’s best. Seven finalists for
the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the
KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

Year Award were on campus
in February to share their
experiences and insights with
the Kansas Wesleyan students.
Award-winning director/
writer Kevin Willmott visited
Kansas Wesleyan in February
to discuss race and film. The
presentation, “History in Black
and Brown,” was part of the
University’s celebration of
African-American History
Month.
High school sophomores,
juniors, and seniors who
were interested in becoming
teachers participated in
Kansas Wesleyan’s Albert
Nelson Teacher Academy Day
in February. The event was
named in honor of the late Dr.
Albert Nelson, who taught in
the Education Department of
Kansas Wesleyan from 19561988.
Whether Roe vs. Wade should
be overturned was an event
topic in Kansas Wesleyan
Debate’s Issues and Advocacy
program. The event, conducted
in February 2008, featured a
public debate between Kansas
Wesleyan Debaters and a team
from the Salina community.
Student candidates for Kansas
Wesleyan’s Teacher Education
program found out how poverty
impacts learning during a
workshop in February. The
workshop, which utilized Dr.
Ruby Payne’s “A Framework for
Understanding Poverty,” was
led by Kansas Wesleyan alumna
Brenda McDaniel (’73), who
taught in Salina for a number
of years before moving to the
Smoky Hill Education Service
Center.
Kansas Wesleyan’s Debate
and Forensics squad garnered a
number of awards and trophies
throughout its season, including
several championships from
the National Christian College
Forensics Tournament in
March 2008. Additionally, the
final of the Kansas College and
University State Parliamentary
Debate Championships was an
all-Kansas Wesleyan affair, as
two of the University’s teams
ended up tied for first.
The Kansas
Wesleyan Jazz
Ensemble concert on
April 9 had special
meaning to members
of the University and
Salina communities,
as it was dedicated
to the memory of
the late Salina heart
surgeon Dr. Mace
Braxton
Braxton. Braxton,
who greatly enjoyed jazz, served
on the University’s Board of
Trustees from October 1999 until
his death in February of 2008.
Inge Auerbacher, an awardwinning author and Holocaust
survivor, was the special
guest speaker during Kansas
Wesleyan’s 2008 Holocaust
Remembrance Week April 1418, 2008. A variety of Holocaustrelated events and information
were available throughout
the Holocaust Remembrance
Week, which was sponsored
by the Department of History,
Department of Behavioral
Science and Human Services,
Division of Fine Arts, and the
Memorial Library.
More than 90 Kansas
Wesleyan University students
assisted with the 10th annual
Kansas Kids Fitness Day for
third graders on May 2, 2008.
Kansas Kids Fitness Day
provides children with a day
of non-competitive activity
and education. The event is
sponsored each
May by the Kansas
Department of Health
and Environment as
a part of National
Physical Education
and Sports Month.
Use of the
Memorial Library
continued to increase
in Fiscal Year 2008.
The gate count for
persons using the library was
41,451, an increase of 2% over
Fiscal Year 2007. Additionally,
library material circulation was 4,155, a 22% increase over Fiscal
Year 2007.

FISCAL
As Fiscal Year 2008 came
to an end on June 30, the
largest capital project in
recent University history –
the construction of the new
Student Activities Center –
neared completion. Located
on the corner of Claflin and
Fourth, the Student Activities
Center includes academic,
athletic, recreational, and social
opportunities. The $12 million,
70,000-square foot Student
Activities Center was designed
by Salina architect Jeff Gillam of
Jones, Gillam, and Renz.
City of Salina regulations
requiring landscaping around
new buildings prompted the
University to implement a more
comprehensive landscaping plan
for the campus. Landscaping
work began in June of 2008.
Not only did the plan provide
for landscaping around the
Student Activities Center, but it
also created a pedestrian mall
and water feature in front of
Pioneer Hall, new meandering
pathways between the buildings,
and garden areas. The Bean
Memorial Well was moved from
its location just outside the
east entrance to Pioneer Hall
to its new home in the grassy
area just south of the east end
of Pioneer Hall. As a part of
the widening of the front entry
way to campus, the historic
limestone gates were taken

Institutional Advancement
During Fiscal Year 2008,
the Office of Institutional
Advancement continued its
concentration on stewardship
and donor recognition. An
extra effort specifically was
placed on the Student Activities
Center donor stewardship and
recognition. Donor recognition

time. Included in these efforts
were the solicitation of funds
for named brick opportunities
on the patio of the Student

Alumni and friends of Kansas
Wesleyan University left 427
messages on engraved bricks
that were available for $100
each. Donors who honored
their time at Kansas Wesleyan
noted accomplishments, and
thanked family and professors
among other messages. Less
than 30 bricks are still available
at the current Student Activities
Center site. The Office of
Institutional Advancement is still
accepting requests from those
interested.
Donor recognition and
stewardship efforts also
continued in the area of planned
giving, while two initiatives
were implemented.
One initiative created a new
tradition for Founders Day.
Heritage Society members
were invited to a Founders
Day celebration that focused
on recognizing individuals
whose thoughtful charitable
acts provide opportunities for
current and future generations
of Kansas Wesleyan students
through endowed scholarships
and planned gifts. The Kansas
Wesleyan University Foundation
currently administers 160
endowed scholarships. Four
new scholarships were started
in Fiscal Year 2008. New
scholarships, which require
a minimum fund balance of
$5,000, will award at least a 4%
yearly scholarship even in times
of poor market returns.
The Institutional Advancement
Office also added an initiative
to support and enhance the
efforts of the Division of Fine
Arts: Friends of the Fine Arts.
Through this initiative, annual
gifts from individuals and

businesses were designated to
support Fine Arts programs,
facilities, activities, and
scholarships. In Institutional
Advancement’s first effort, 65
donors contributed $8,685 in
Fiscal Year 2008.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
The Kansas Wesleyan
University Alumni Association
remained quite active in
providing assistance to campus
entities and participating in the
University community. Members
who attended the free lunch
on the second Thursday of
each month heard from eight
different speakers representing a
variety of academic and athletic
areas of campus, as well as
from retired State Senator Ben
Vidricksen (’51), who discussed
the state of politics in Kansas.
Additionally, those attending the
February meeting heard from a
representative of the Salina Art
Center, who spoke about the
collaboration between Kansas
Wesleyan and the Salina Art
Center on an exhibition of art
from India.
In addition to paying on
its pledge for an office in the
Student Activities Center,
the Alumni Association also
provided funding for a number
of projects including the
