Off-Axis Santa Barbara 2008:
A Month-Long Celebration of Contemporary Art
Off-Axis 2008 celebrates contemporary art, culture, performance, and design with
a month-long series of special events, exhibitions, and public programs. Offered
as a unique collaboration between the community’s art institutions, galleries,
artists, non-profits, and civic organizations, Off-Axis highlights Santa Barbara’s
diverse cultural and artistic resources.
Participants include: Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College, Channing
Peake Gallery, Edward Cella Art + Architecture, Patty Look Lewis Gallery, Reynolds
Gallery at Westmont College, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Sullivan Goss: An American Gallery,
University Art Museum at University of California Santa Barbara; with support from CASA, Santa Barbara Conference and Visitors Bureau and Film Commission, Santa Barbara Independent, Seasons Magazine, The Santa
Barbara Downtown Organization, and Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.

Off-Axis exhibition: October 3 - October 31:
Solo exhibition of new work by Colin Gray with a
focus on the intricate drawings for which the artist is
well known. The exhibit also features recent sculptures and new tapestries by artist John Nava and his
venture with Magnolia Editions in Oakland, CA.

5: Book artist Pamela Zwehl-Burke exhibits her
rare collection of book objects in “Bookworks.”
Motivated by the productive tension and intimacy
of one-of-a-kind and limited edition book objects,
the artist uses text, images, digital prints, charcoal
drawings, and more to create unique book art both
large and small.

January 16: “Edge: Santa Barbara County Contemporary Artists.” A group exhibition, curated by
former gallery owner Ro Snell, features nonrepresentational works relevant to, or a conceptual interpretation of the title EDGE created by
emerging and established Santa Barbara County

31: Horace Bristol, “Bristol 100.” A photographic
exhibition celebrating the life and work of one of
the original LIFE magazine photographers and the
impetus for John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning epic The Grapes of Wrath.

Off-Axis exhibition: thru October 12: JeanPierre Hébert, “Improbable Landscapes.” An exhibition of twenty-four works on paper by
Jean-Pierre Hébert, including digital prints and
graphite drawings, offered in the format of
panoramic landscapes. These works are insights
of structures found in a mental and spiritual world
of mathematics, theoretical physics, and cosmology structures that are as real as the observable
California landscape.

Look Lewis and Channing Peake, “Eastern Abstraction Meets Western Space and Color.” Exhibit reveals how both artists are inspired by the
nature and landscape of Santa Barbara County.
Peake also draws inspiration from the deserts of
Mexico and Inyo County, whereas Lewis' work is
also shaped by her early childhood in Japan.

Off-Axis exhibition: September 4 – October 25: “Language Skills: The Art of the Expanded
Print.” Featuring the work of Martha Johnson, this
show is an exploration of the expanded print
format, that interweave to form a narrative of
connections. In the process, the pieces explore
positive and negative space, peripheral vision, and
depth and time perception.

Off-Axis exhibition: October 3 - October 31:
Nicholas Price, “Modest Motif, Complex Construction.” A solo exhibition of new intaglio monoprints by Nicholas Price, recipient of the Art Fund’s
2007 Individual Artist Award in Printmaking.
Created from layers of overlapping plates that
reveal minimal forms, subtle colors and rhythmic
textures, the prints achieve a unique melody
between process and image which reveal the
emerging patterns that delicately reflect a
weaver’s hand.

Jean-Pierre Hébert, “Drawing with the Mind,” curated by Elaine LeVasseur. Bloom Projects: Julien
Audebert, “Ornaments and Crimes.” In the early
70’s, Hébert became one of the world’s first artists
to co-opt computer code, teaching a variety of
computer-driven devices to create drawings for
him, resulting in an oeuvre that is simultaneously
amazing, beautiful, and meditative. For Bloom
Projects, CAF will feature the work of Paris-based
artist, Julien Audebert. Audebert utilizes photobased work to question the mass reproduction of
imagery by challenging the inherent limits of printing.

Off-Axis exhibition: October 3 – November
15: “State of the Art Gallery 2008 Exhibition,” an
installation of eight regional artists’ sculptures
along State Street in downtown Santa Barbara.
This project is a collaboration between the City
and County of Santa Barbara and The Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, with support from
the City of Santa Barbara Redevelopment Agency
and Santa Barbara Beautiful. Dean Anes, Director
of Acme Gallery in Los Angeles, has selected
artists Richard Aber, Jeff Elings, Ed Inks, Bill Malis,
Rafael Perea de la Cabada and Matt Woodford,
Jeff Sanders, Helle Scharling-Todd, Jeff Kaiser and
Nathan Snyder.

27 - December 21: “Ten!: Gifts of the SBMA
PhotoFutures,” now in it’s tenth year, with photographic works bringing together the worlds of art

Off-Axis exhibition: October 4 – November
9: “10 under 30,”presenting ten artists under the
age of thirty deserving of critical attention. Also on
view, Taos-based painter Jack Smith will exhibit almost forty new works. Smith uses media from
Dutch masters to create contemporary paintings
that are sensitive to contemporary photography,
German Expressionism, and contemporary identity politics.

Beautiful Nothing: The Architecture of Edward A.
Killingsworth,” curated by Jennifer M. Volland and
Cara Mullio. First major presentation of the designs
by the Southern California architect, Edward Abel
Killingsworth (1917-2004), who achieved international prominence during the 1960s with his signature light-weight wooden post-and-lintel residences
and commercial buildings.
Off-Axis exhibition: October 29 – March 1,
2009: “2008 California Biennial: Anna Sew Hoy,
Shana Lutker, and Brenna Youngblood,” in association with the Orange County Museum of Art’s
“2008 California Biennial. This fall, UAM will serve
as an off-site venue for the Orange County Museum of Art’s 2008 California Biennial.

Presenting new adaptations of Shakespeare's greatest works. This independent, laboratory theatre
company integrates aesthetic experimentation with
cross-cultural interaction and understanding. The Lit
Moon World Shakespeare Festival which will take
place at multiple venues, with multiple directors, and
one great writer is the only festival of its kind in the
United States, and one of only seven in the world.

almost twenty years, Tibbles has had an active career as a professional artist. Her Los Angeles

adobe homes. Visited sites will include period
adobes from Santa Barbara's Spanish/Mexican

afternoon reception organized by Kurt Helfrich, Curator of the University Art Museum's Architecture
