Upon successful completion of this course, the student will: understand the basic components of systems. understand the issues surrounding the development of information systems to solve business problems. understand the role that information systems play in successful organizations. learn various application software TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED SCIENCE GENERAL CORE CURRICULUM LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will be introduced to topics on how information technology (IT) affects our lives, society, ethics, and the environment. Upon successful completion of the course the student will: have knowledge of social and ethical challenges that have evolved through the use of IT (e.g. identification theft, internet scams, etc.) and develop ideas through discussion on how to solve these challenges. understand the impact that IT has had on our lives and society as a whole as well as expected future improvement. understand ways IT is used to reduce energy problems and its positive effects on the environment (e.g. Cybermeetings, work-from-home jobs, etc.) INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN BUSINESS Fall 2015 Syllabus GRADING POLICIES: Final grades will be determined as follows: Exam 1: = 20% Exam 2: = 20% Exam 3: = 20% Final Exam: = 20% Assignment 1: = 5% Assignment 2: = 5% Assignment 3: = 5% Assignment 4: = 5% Extra Credit (choose up to 5) Rawls Research = 2 points on exam ea. Letter grades will be based upon a percentage scale: 90 100% = A 80 89.9% = B 70 79.9% = C 60 69.9% = D Below 59.9% = F EXAMINATION POLICIES: All exams will be multiple choice. The exams will be closed book, closed notes, and the students are required to do their own work on the exams. Bring an orange scantron to each exam and a black lead pencil (#2 or softer). Students will have a period of two weeks after the exam results are posted to examine their scantrons (in order to challenge a grade). Students absent on an exam day who have a legitimate excuse in accordance to school policy need to make arrangements with me before that exam. Failure to comply will result in a zero for that exam. Those students that comply will be given the opportunity to take a comprehensive make-up exam at the end of the semester. Students who are absent for the comprehensive exam or the final exam will be given a makeup final exam at 50% value. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT POLICIES: Please direct all homework questions to the TA’s. Homework assignments must be submitted on time to be eligible for 100% credit. Students who submit assignments up to 24 hours late will be eligible for 75% credit. Assignments will not be accepted if submitted 24 hours after the deadline. All homework assignments will be e-mailed to me. Always e-mail a copy of the assignment to yourself and make sure that your e-mail account is accessible from my office in case I did not receive the homework. If I do not receive a homework assignment that was submitted on time, students will have a period of one week after the assignment grades are posted to show that the assignment was actually submitted on time. INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN BUSINESS Fall 2015 Syllabus ATTENDANCE: Required. Students are responsible for lecture notes, homework assignments and anything that goes on in the classroom regardless of reason for absence. Make arrangements with fellow students who are good note-takers to get class information in case you are unable to attend class. Office hours are for specific questions and are not make-up lectures. ILLNESS AND DEATH NOTIFICATION: The Center of Campus Life is responsible for notifying the campus community of student illness, immediate family death and/or student death. It is the student’s responsibility for missed class assignments and/or course work during their absence. ACADEMIC HONESTY: CHEATING (IN ANY FORM) WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Students who cheat will be disciplined according to University policy and all students are expected to conform to the Texas Tech Code of Student Conduct. You are expected to do your own work on the exams. The course professor will decide an appropriate penalty depending on the severity of the violation. Students are allowed to work with others on homework assignments, but are not allowed to copy and/or paste the whole assignment or parts of the assignment. This will be considered cheating. In the case of cheating in a homework assignment, the minimum penalty will be to receive a zero on the assignment. The use of calculators, cell phones, laptop computers, netbooks, tablets or any other form of electronic devices are STRICTLY PROHIBITED during exams. IMPORTANT: All cheating violations including cheating on exams and homework assignments will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct. CIVILITY IN THE CLASSROOM: Students are expected to maintain a classroom environment that is conductive to learning. Food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom. The only exception is water in a container with a screw top lid. Smoking (including smokeless tobacco products), chewing tobacco, chewing gum, is strictly prohibited. Distracting behavior such as sleeping during class, reading the newspaper, playing on your laptop or tablet, using a cell phone for texting, playing or social media, etc., is strictly prohibited. FERPA REGULATIONS: Texas Tech University is subject to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). This means that once a student reaches 18 years of age or attends a postsecondary institution, he or she becomes an "eligible student," and all rights formerly given to parents under FERPA transfer to the student. Therefore, private matters concerning the student's attendance, grades, performance, exam dates, extra credit opportunities, makeup exams, or any other topics related to a student and this course WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED with parents, friends, employers, family members, spouses, significant others, or any other third party members. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements.
