College of Architecture & Environmental Design
Position Descriptions:
The College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED) at Cal Poly, San Luis
Obispo, CA, is seeking two full-time, tenure-track faculty members at the rank of
Assistant Professor to teach general education and interdisciplinary courses that
further exchange across the college's environmental design disciplines and advance
environmental design education at Cal Poly. Successful candidates will be well
prepared to teach lecture and studio courses, and show potential to engage in
productive scholarship or creative practice related to the subjects they teach. The
tenure home of successful candidates will be assigned to the academic department
closest to their qualifications and interests. Appointments for either position may be
made in the Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management or City
& Regional Planning Departments. The following positions are available:
Assistant Professor
Environmental Design Representation + Beginning Design
Teaching responsibilities will include beginning design studios and introductory
courses in design representation and modeling including traditional and digital media.
This faculty member will contribute to teaching a college-wide course for first year
students, Introduction to Architecture and Environmental Design, and develop
interdisciplinary courses in environmental design representation methods.
Assistant Professor
Sustainability in the Built Environment
Teaching responsibilities will include interdisciplinary studios at the intermediate and
advanced levels and courses in Cal Poly's award winning Sustainable Environments
Minor as well as the development of new general education courses related to
sustainability. This faculty member will work with students on all aspects of
sustainability in the built environment including: philosophies of sustainability; the
implementation of sustainable principles to achieve sustainability goals; and the
validation of sustainable outcomes through evidence-informed planning, design and
construction.
The CAED offers high-quality, hands-on professional education that prepares
graduates for careers in environmental design, planning and construction professions.
The college educates approximately 1,600 majors and admission is extremely
competitive.
Founded in 1901, Cal Poly is one of only five comprehensive polytechnic universities

Required Qualifications:
A terminal degree (master's or doctorate as appropriate to the discipline) by the listed
start date and evidence of relevant expertise. Please see the Department Information

Candidates for the Beginning Design and Representation position must demonstrate
ability to teach design, drawing, visualization, and/or 3-D modeling.
Candidates for the Sustainability and Environmental Design position must
demonstrate ability to teach theory and application of sustainable design concepts
and technologies

ARCHITECTURE, (ARCH): A successful candidate in the ARCH Depart will join 25
full-time faculty and 650 undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited Bachelor
of Architecture program named by DesignIntelligence as the #1 undergraduate
program in the U.S. in 2014. A post-professional Master of Science in ARCH
program with concentrations in architectural design and structural design enrolls 30
students. The department is seeking teacher-scholars with expertise in design
representation or sustainable design who are qualified to teach architecture and
interdisciplinary design studios. To be eligible for a tenure-track appointment in the
ARCH Depart applicants must have college-level teaching experience, a professional
degree in architecture and a graduate degree in architecture or a related field.
Eligibility for license or Ph.D. candidacy is acceptable for appointment, but promotion
and tenure are contingent on possession of the license or Ph.D. Uniquely qualified
candidates not meeting the specified degree requirement, but with exceptional
professional achievements may be considered. For more information about the

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, (LA): A successful candidate in the LA Depart will
join 9 full-time faculty and 200 undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited 5year Bachelor of LA program named by DesignIntelligence as the #1 undergraduate
program in the West. The department is seeking teacher-scholars with expertise in
design representation or sustainable design who are qualified to teach landscape
architecture and interdisciplinary design studios. To be eligible for a tenure-track
appointment in the LA Depart applicants must have a master's degree in landscape
architecture or a related field. Where the master's degree is in a related field, the
undergraduate degree must be in landscape architecture. For more information

CITY & REGIONAL PLANNING, (CRP): A successful candidate in the CRP Depart
will join 12 full-time faculty, 100 undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited
Bachelor of Science in CRP program, and 60 graduate students enrolled in an
accredited, nationally ranked Master of CRP Program. The department is seeking
teacher-scholars with expertise in design representation or sustainable design who
are qualified to teach planning and interdisciplinary design studios. Applicants must
have a degree in planning and a Ph.D. in planning or a related field. Eligibility for
Ph.D. candidacy is acceptable for appointment, but promotion and tenure are
contingent on possession of the Ph.D. Uniquely qualified candidates not meeting the
specified degree requirement, but with exceptional professional achievements may

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT, (CM): A successful candidate in the CM Dept will
join 9 full-time faculty and 300 undergraduate students enrolled in a nationally ranked
accredited Bachelor of Science in CM program. The department is seeking teacherscholars with expertise in design representation or sustainable design who are
qualified to teach construction and interdisciplinary design studios. Applicants must
have a master's degree in construction or a related field and five or more years of
professional experience. A Ph.D. in construction or a related field is preferred. For
candidates with a Ph.D. a minimum of three years of professional experience is
acceptable. Uniquely qualified candidates not meeting the specified degree
requirement, but with exceptional professional achievements may be considered. For
