COMMITTEE ON COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION (CCCE)

The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the development, assessment and use of computing technologies in chemical education. This report summarizes some
CCCE activities in pursuit of these objectives from February 2010 through July 2010.
Committee members are identified with an asterisk (*) after their names.
1) CONFCHEM - ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES. The conferences provide an opportunity for authors to present papers on the CONFCHEM website and for discussion of the papers using the CONFCHEM Discussion List. Discussion of the papers generally includes: a day devoted to short questions, responses from the author, and then several days for discussion of each paper. The CONFCHEM
Discussion List currently has over 700 registrants. The CONFCHEM website is managed by John Penn* and Robert Belford* manages the CONFCHEM Majordomo
Discussion List.
From May 7- June 30 we ran the Spring 2010 ConfChem, Educating the Next
Generation: Green and Sustainable Chemistry , which was organized by Robert
Belford* and Loyd Bastin a) Scheduled Upcoming Conferences i) Winter 2011 (Jan.-Feb): “ Development and Assessment of Computer
Simulations and Animations for the Teaching and Learning of Chemistry ” organized by Jack Barbera* ii) Spring 2011 (May-June): " Case Based Studies in Chemical Education " organized by Clyde Herreid iii) Spring 2012 (May - June) " Assessment ", organized by Rene Cole*
2) COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER. The committee publishes a newsletter that provides educators an opportunity to share innovations in the use of technology for teaching chemistry. The newsletter is published electronically. Following publication, each article is discussed online using the
CONFCHEM Discussion List. This provides readers an opportunity to ask the author questions about their article. Resa Kelly* is editor of the Newsletter and Bob
Belford* chairs the on-line discussion of papers. The next edition of the newsletter is scheduled for publication in November 2010.
3) SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS. The CCCE and its members organize symposia and present papers at National ACS Meetings and at the BCCCE. During the 21st BCCE the CCCE sponsored 1 symposium with 4 sessions and 5 workshops sessions.

4) COMMITTEE MEETINGS. a) Open and closed meetings of the CCCE are held at BCCE Meetings. Meetings were held at the 2010 BCCE Meeting at the University of Northern Texas. i) A task-group is being set up to work on the ConfChem 2.0 project. ii) Jonathon Gutow* has agreed to tackle the committee's web page on the division site. iii) Antony Williams of the RSC ChemSpider joined the closed meeting and we discussed potential cheminformatic resources and the development of an education portal. iv) Adrienne Kozlowski of the CINF education Committee joined the open committee and is willing to liaise with the CCCE. We are also looking into developing an OLCC (On-Line Chemistry Course) with CINF on cheminformatics. The last OLCC was run in the Fall of 2004 which was done with CHAS on Chemical Health and Safety. b) An online meeting using Skype was held in April
5) CCCE WEBSITE. This website is used to provide information about past, present and future CCCE activities. John Penn* is the website manager a. http://www.chedccce.org.
6) OTHER ACTIVITIES a) Scott Van Bramer* is working with Norb Pienta to try and get the proceedings from the 2010 ConfChem published in JCE.

Gary Trammell has retired and will no longer be serving on the committee as an active member. Gary has organized several ConfChems, was instrumental in the development of the last OLCC and his energy and wisdom will be missed.
