PATHOLOGY TRAINING REQUIREMENT
FOR SURGICAL RESIDENTS
VMTH Anatomic Pathology Service
Effective: October 5, 2000
Training Requirements:
The VMTH Anatomic Pathology Service will provide the following supervised 80 hours
of pathology training for surgical residents:
Two full time weeks must be committed to the pathology service, Monday thru
Saturday. During this period the surgical resident will be paired with the pathology
necropsy and biopsy residents in their casework.
With the necropsy pathology resident, the surgical resident will help oversee the gross
necropsies conducted by senior students on the necropsy rotation, as well as write gross
necropsy reports on at least ten cases. Surgical residents are expected to work with all
animal species and not just the species of their particular interest. The surgical resident
will work with the pathology resident in the collection and processing of appropriate
specimens for histopathology and other supplementary laboratory procedures. During the
two week period they will join the resident in interpreting the histopathology findings.
However, the pathology resident remains the primary person responsible for completion
of all final pathology reports.
With the biopsy pathology resident, the surgical resident will assist in the trimming of
biopsy specimens in the late afternoons and will join the resident and pathologist on duty
in the microscopic evaluation of biopsies in the mornings (8:00 - 10:00 a.m.)
The Surgical Resident Is Expected To:
Contact Pathology office personnel 530-752-1369 to make arrangements for attending
orientation on their first day and obtaining a copy of the pathology handbook prior to
their rotation.
Participate in all activities of the service for a full two week period, working in
conjunction with both biopsy and necropsy residents. Saturdays are regular necropsy
days that begin at 9:00AM and end when the cases are finished.
Complete ten gross necropsy reports, that are written in the text style of the official gross
report with the assistance of the pathology resident. These reports are independent from
the Pathology resident’s official report and not an exact copy. Turn these reports into
Becky Griffey, VM3A RM: 1345.
Attend histopathology, biopsy, gross and special pathology rounds during the two week
rotation.
